  • In this video we show the basic maintenance procedure of changing your engine oil on a RAM 1500 with a 5.7L Hemi engine. It is very straightforward and only requires a 13mm socket and wrench as well a a drain pan.
We are using an OEM Mopar oil filter as well as Mobil 1 full Synthetic 5w20 weight oil.

Use a plastic Ziploc bag to remove the oil filter, I did mine yesterday and didn't spill a drop! Place the bag over the filter and unscrew the filter and the oil will pour into the bag then when the filter comes off put it in the bag and remove! I also fill my new filter with oil that way there's no dry startup!

Thats an awesome tip with the ziploc bag! I'll have to try that on the next oil change for sure! 👍

Hoo boy. Listen here boys and girls. I felt pretty silly being a grown ass man watching a video on how to change the oil in my "new to me" ram, but holy shit am I glad I did. Old filter seemed like it took forever to spin off holding it with a gallon ziplock bag to try and prevent spillage (actually works pretty well, barely spilled a few drops on the frame), but the new filter tightened up in like 2 turns. Was concerned at first, but then I remembered dude said to make sure the gasket from the old filter didn't stay on the truck, and that's exactly what happened. I've never had that happen before, and I thought it was odd that he would say that, but I 100% would have just double checked to make sure it wasn't cross threaded, and then used my reet ard strength to tighten it up good and proper.
Seriously, thanks for these videos and your posts on ramforum. Boutta tackle the active grill shutter delete.

One thing I do with all my oil filters that go in vertically is fill them with oil to get it full. It prevents an extensive dry start. Obviously the oil itself is new and clean so I’m not worst that but those few seconds of no oil in the engine does damage. Ive filled all my ram oil filters and when I start it after an oil change the dry start only lasts about a half a second, then its back to normal. I believe it makes the engine have less wear, making it last longer. Ive always done it with all my cars. People think I’m crazy but all my cars have had over 200k miles

I always pre-wet the filters, keep pouring, several times till the proper height to install w/o spilling. even for the 5.2 Jeep engines, a little less to match the screw-mounting angle. Jason good post, keep wettingum ppl.

I've changed all my own oil and filter at 5-7k in my last 4 vehicles even new off the lot with warranty.
My last two trucks were at 215k miles when sold and not a single issue, tundra though, and 2 challengers with 40k and 55k 5.7, 6.4 both manual trans.
I used a 15 minute lube shop one time in my off road tundra, and they mix matched all my skid plates bolts which also later fell off going 50, miraculously didn't do damage to my truck, but also torqued the oil drain bolt on so tight that I had to slot it and replace it. Never again, change your own oil! It's also kind of fun to select your own oil, and filter. Certainly good practice to learn your vehicle and how many miles she'll go without any need for any major issue on intervals, hell I've caught a worn out tie rod end before while changing my oil, and replaced that with a buddy on a Saturday off.

I like the video. You have the right voice for the Do It Yourself video.
This was very helpful. The owners manual is useful for determining how many quarts of oil your specifi
Model truck and engine holds. And I found mopar made two very different size oil filters for the 2014 Ram. So if your given a smaller filter than the one you remove from you truck at the Dodge dealership it's correct.
    Great work man.

Aside from the ziploc bag, getting a larger pan made a huge difference for me. I kept spilling with the 2 gallon one you used and later bought a 16 qt drain pan. Wish I would have done it sooner. It also has an anti-splash rim and a drain nozzle so you can pour back into gallon jugs without a funnel.

The main reason gaskets stick to the block is from a lack of oil on the gasket. The oil residue on the block isn’t enough. Put oil on the gasket.

    • @anonimous2451
      @anonimous2451 4 роки тому +1

What he said. Oil on a gasket prevents it from sticking to mating surface. Sometimes (NOT with an oil filter) there is a need to NOT oil a rubber seal gasket, but, usually on permanently repaired surfaces that will never be removed again.

    • @amritk5173
      @amritk5173 3 роки тому +4

That's not why, they peel off everytime regardless. Oil is to lubricate the seal so that it doesn't bind as you spin on the filter, and therefore seals correctly.

Still a PITA though. My vehicle you just put your vacuum pump in the dipstick to extract the oil, and the oil filter is accessible from the hood, so no need to get under the vehicle or jack anything up. Don't know why FCA can't spend the extra $50 to make it more convenient to service.

When the oil filter is vertical like that i found its best to fill it up with oil before you install it, this way you have oil pressure immediately on startup and don't have any clickity clackity lifters. Great video otherwise!

Better to fill it only 1./2 way - 2/3. Sometimes the slug of oil in the filter will be an obstruction to the oil pump getting prime when there is air between the pump and the filter. - Sandy

Hi. I love your channel. I've been doing my oil since I bought the truck Brandy new(2014). I use a 2L coke bottle cut in half to place under the oil filter before I start loosen it. That way. The half coke bottle catches all the dirty oil. I'll be doing spark plugs soon. So your other video for that will be very helpful.

I am not sure if anyone has yet mentioned this. I am a fan of Mobile 1 Full Synthetic that you show in the video. After the normal break-in period on a rebuilt '78 Datsun 280Z engine I switched from the mechanic-installed Pennzoil conventional oil to Mobile 1 full synthetic. To my knowledge, in the early '90 no other oil companies offered full synthetics in the U.S. I stuck with it in that vehicle. Recently I have begun switching all of my vehicles to full synthetic oils of varying brands. They all sell for their weight in gold now, even conventional oil, so what's a couple buck every few thousand miles. I have typically stayed with the brand that the previous owner used, if I knew the previous owner. I even have a Chevy S-10 with 310,000 miles still running Quaker State. In an effort to avoid stocking 3 or 4 oil brands in varying viscosities for each brand, I sought to find one oil brand in one product line that would be suitable and recommended according to all of the manufacturers of the vehicles that I own that is readily available in local retail stores, mainly Wal-Mart (best oil prices that I have found). It is nearly impossible. I did not find one brand and product line that satisfied all auto manufacturers' special additive/formulation guidelines simultaneously. I'm not driving Porsches and Teslas either. For instance, one brand met General Motors "GM6904" specs while not meeting Crysler "MS6395". Some manufacturers go ever further. I owned a 2014 VW Passat 2.5L that specced one Castrol Edge product, and only that one product. I have begun looking in my owners manuals for what each manufacturer recommends specifically for that year and that engine ( like API SN vs API SJ, or the aforementioned GM...., MS...., WS...., etc,) and not relying on older conventional knowledge and experience.
Now, my 2015 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi manual recommends, Mopar, Pennzoil, or Shell Helix that meets Chrysler MS6395 material standards. Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic does that. No others that I found did so. All of the viscosity preferences of mine are out the window now too. If my manual states 5W-30, that is exactly what I will use, even if I "feel" like 10W-40 would be better in the SC summer heat towing a 6000lb boat up and down hills at speeds that I could be arrested for just mentioning. No more 10W-30 in the winter, 10W-40 in the fall and spring, and sometimes 20W-50 in the summer.
So I found it interesting to note that you are using the very oil that I would have grabbed myself for the first oil change as the new second owner of this truck. I just thought it may be worth everyone looking into. I have also been a fan of OEM oil filters in the past. Wix has demonstrated a commitment to manufacturing quality filters. Napa sells a wix made NAPA Gold filter that is excellent according to some very good mechanics and car nuts like me. It saves me time running around to dealers buying Mopar, Nissan, AC Delco, Toyota, Suzuki, and Mercury Marine filters that I like to keep in stock. Something else worth exploring is the filter medias available now. I have seen some stating that they were designed for use with synthetic oils.
A few more worthy suggestions to everyone about oil changes. Don't go 7000 miles before an oil change even if your Vehicle Information Center indicates you are only at 60% of the oil's life. I like 3000, maybe 5000 with synthetics. Check it once a month when the vehicle is level and the engine is cool. ALL vehicles use oil, regardless of age or mileage. Fill the new filter with fresh oil unless it is mounted horizontally and coat the new filter gasket with a film of oil so that it seals well and does not pinch and deform as it is tightened. I personally like a 1/4 to 1/2 turn with a filter wrench after hand tight. I have seen filters come off of other people's vehicles before. I prefer a wrench of the proper size over a ratchet and socket where permissible. It gives me a better feel for how much torque you are applying. A torque wrench is the best of course, but not many people own one, at least in a 3/8" drive. And if you have the luxury of letting the vehicle sit for a couple of hours with the drain plug out, let the dirtiest oil (those last few drops) come out while you grease the suspension, check CV boots for cracks, and look for other signs of potential failures. Spend that time getting to know your vehicle from below.
One last thing to anyone attempting to change their own oil for the first time : Down the road no matter how much you know or how much experience you have, question everything until you become familiar with each of your vehicle. In 37 years of having the satisfaction of doing my own mechanicing, along with probably 350 oil changes, I am here myself to learn from someone else what I think I may already know.

Not sure what year and model you're driving BUT the 2013 Laramie Longhorn 5.7 Hemi 6speed 4x4 with the heavy duty Tow Package makes getting to my Oil Filter a complete and total B&#^CH...I can tell that our lines run differently and yours allow fairly easy access considering the design location could have been much easier to locate for a regular service item. Good Video. Well Done. JP

I let the old oil drip out of the drain plug hole while I change the filter. Before I put the drain plug back, i clean the old oil around the drain hole and clean the bolt threads of dirt. Then I clean the flange where the new filter will seat. And put clean oil on the filter gasket and prefilled before replacing it.

I have a 13, 2500, doesn't have the steering rack so the filter is easier to change, but seems like a very small filter for for the size of engine, not much bigger than my lawn mower uses.

a magnetic socket or just placing one at the end to take out the bolt will prevent oil from getting all over you and the bolt will not fall in the pan

Yeah I've seen them and people seem to be happy with it! Personally it doesn't bother me too much for the amount of times I need to get under there and change my oil I just deal with it. 😁

what do you suggest about the kms or miles between oil changes, compare to the light reminder I can drive lake 8700 ,miles or so,many owners change the oil when they hit 5000mil but I am thinking full synthetic oil is much more better then 5000mil,so what do you think, what is the best way for this?

I liked your video is was well scripted and the camera work and audio was great. I the onlything wrong was the fact the Mobile 1 oil is not compatible with Dodge Ram 1500 5.7l hemi. They make a compatible oil for the hemi in Europe, but it's not sold here in the states.

    Motor.

Ok I gotta ask. Do your save any money by doing the oil change yourself? Seems like they get such a good deal on parts and oil. The price I can buy the stuff at makes it really not worth it for me to do it. Good video and tips and can’t wait to see more. Thanks

  • @tallll70

haha , i just did mine yesterday, You can always hear and feel smoother operation after oil change. I just rather spend 60 bucks for synthetic and 20k miles filter made for it, but i leave it about 7k miles. What's up with smaller oil filling opening? It used to be double size on my 06.
