    Having (somewhat) recently painted my own car for the first time, I can appreciate the amount of work that goes into it - 99% prep, 1% painting. Looks great. Fisheyes and clear coat orange peel are a pain! But, the reaction you get from people when you mention that you painted it yourself is priceless.

      GiveMeMyStyxhexenhammer666Plushie AndNoOneGetsHurt I hear you buddy, I have a severe and aggressive form of arthritis and lost the ability to walk unaided at the age of 30, I’m 35 now. If I didn’t use a bit of self deprecating humour now and then, I might actually get depressed about it. Making a joke of it is a great ice breaker too. It’s funny to invent stories of weird and unlikely accidents when people ask “what have you done”, and see if/how long the believe you for. Base jumping off the roof of my bungalow is always a funny one.🤣

      BLISSFUL FAPPER haha, anything bizarre or pushing the boundaries of feasibility. People usually realise you’re joking but it’s more fun than hearing “you’re a bit young to have arthritis”, then having to explain that it’s a genetic condition not age related and then people saying “oh it must be terrible for you”, when it isn’t. I don’t have to carry my bags or queue at airports, I can park pretty much wherever I want within reason and I get the best seats at concerts and cheaper too!🤣

    Solvent Pop as you called it is called Solvent Boil. These appear as pin hole craters in the finish. These are caused by the solvent boiling off because of temperature. Suggest using thinners and hardeners with a higher flash point in warm conditions. Thinners and paint hardeners for two pack paint can be bought in Slow, Normal and Fast and should be matched to the temperature of the time you spray paint. Fish eyes are created when metallic paint is concentrated in one spot when spray painting and as the name suggests looks like a fish's eye. Spray painting is like mowing a lawn. Long parallel strokes with the paint gun with a slight overlap, each layer is as wet as the paint beside it with no dry spots. Metallic paint needs to be painted slightly dryer to avoid Fish eyes and to achieve a more even finish. The only turbine paint gun I own is a HLVP Airless by Wagner for painting house paint. Basically its an air paint pump like the vacuum cleaner spray guns of the 1950's. Cheap paint guns are crap, with concentrated narrow uneven spray patterns and are a waste of money. You only get what you pay for. Great project for learning. Good Luck.

    I watched this video multiple times. The videos shows that the clearcoat is having major dieback, thats why you are getting loss off gloss and texture. I invested about $2-$3k in an Apollo turbine system. I was getting the same exact problem you were having "solvent pop" and "dieback". I spent significant time trying to fix this issue always being told it was my fault from the turbine manufacturer. I tried everything from letting the basecoat sit for hours etc. I tried different brands of clearcoat, they all did the samething dieback. I finally gave up and invested in a compressor, and Iwata LPH80 gun setup. All problems were immediately eliminated and now I get professional jobs that dont need wetsanding and buffing. The clearcoat cures exactly how it looks after shooting it. The Iwata LPH80 only requires 2 CFM which means it can run on a small compressor.

      @@Samcrac I have an LPH80 and LPH400 from Iwata. With those two guns, you can paint anything. If you were to get confortable and efficient with the settings on the gun, you can get a great finish using less air. That compressor should be more than sufficient to spray bumpers or parts.

    • @jadarroch
      @jadarroch 5 років тому +3

      Solvent pop is caused when too much paint is applied or coats are applied on top of each other too quickly. When this is done, gases from the reducer from the lower portion of the clear, are trying to escape, but they are trapped because of the paint thickness or the coat that was applied on top of it, thus creating the bubbles known as solvent pop. This is why you have a tendency to get the solvent pop on the top surfaces easier (or on cars/trucks on the edge of the jams), because clear is usually applied heavier on the top surfaces. Applying too much material could also be caused by an improper set-up on your gun. Check what the paint manufacturer recommends and what you have on your gun. This could be another culprit for solvent pop., your equipment doesn't cause solvent pop.
      Take a look at www.sherwin-automotive.com/pdf/Troubleshooting_Guides_Eng_PDF.pdf and look up dieback. You'll see their recommendations for fixing the problem. No where in that document does it blame dieback on the equipment.

    As some one who's been doing it for a long time, hardware is important but not the be all end all. The better you are and the better the hardware you use the better results and less post work. Actual good paint guns are $100-$450, you can get a good compressor for under $1k. Would I use a $50 harbor freight gun on the 58 vette I just did, no but it could have favorable results. In all honesty you have to get a feel for the gun and get it dialed in. Wanna know how to get any gun dialed in? Spray water on vertical glass, you want uniform small droplets. Any water running down the glass or not uniform droplets you change distance, psi, speed, fan, fluid or overlap. 3 gun settings & 3 human settings.....Someone can have dramatic changes just by changing how they spray without touching the gun. There really isn't any golden rule, just good starting reference points. Its the painter that makes the paint job in the end.

    You might want to try one of the many "Fish Eye eliminator" additives available online or from your local auto paint supplier. Back in the day, I painted cars with Acrylic Lacquer and Enamel, when those paints were the standard OEM paints for GM and Ford cars. We didn't use base coat-clear coat in those days and sometimes, no matter how many times I used a solvent to remove wax & grease, I still got "Fish Eyes" on flat surfaces, so I couldn't have survived without my "Fish Eye Killer".

    • @Gtrips07
      @Gtrips07 5 років тому

      Aren't there additives made for plastic bumbers as well to help with orange peel and fish eyes on plastic. Does paint quality matter too? That doesn't look like OEM paint

    • @randyveal9828
      @randyveal9828 5 років тому

      Paint quality is very important and unfortunately more complex than ever. Almost every Auto Body & Paint specialist now have to go through a lot of training to get the results expected by car owners today. Most body shops limit their paint brand choices to just a few manufacturers because each paint manufacturer normally offers training, problem resolution and advice on specific techniques and additives for today automotive finishes. Many vehicles surfaces now include metal (Steel & Aluminum), some plastic, and composite materials that make it really difficult to get a great paint job that matches in texture as well as a color, with just one formulation of paint. Tri-Coat paint seems to be increasingly popular, in fact I own a GM product with "White Diamond" and it can be a nightmare to match and/or blend various panels.
      The best advice I'd offer anyone who wants to paint anything automotive, is get to know a person who works for or owns a local Auto Paint supplier and ask them for suggestions, such as additives (including some that are mixed into the batch of paint you are going to use for a specific paint and application.
      I know this a long, almost "non-answer" other than to suggest talking with a Auto Paint pro, but it's the best solution I know.

  • @heavymetalmadness666

    One thing I would say about turbines is they can be good or bad. I used one for 12 years or more painting on hundreds of cars. Then when it failed went back to a 600 dollar spray gun and 400 dollar filter system for the air compressor. The positive of the turbines is warm oil free moisture free air, but the down side is just one pressure that is low and just lobbing the material on. In my time using a turbine I found it very hard to get good paint matches with metallic and pearl paints. Using higher end paint like PPG DBC base coat really helped the color matches in those applications vs say Omni MBC. Now DBC is going to match better than MBC no matter what, but in using a real spray gun the mismatches of the MBC are no where near as bad . As far as the too much orange peel with a turbine, that is a fact and the same can be said for any cheap spray gun. If your doing this at home or even in a high end spray booth , you have to wet sand and buff for the most part any way if you want perfection., so I don't see the orange peel as a real deal breaker with a turbine, just the color matches in certain situations, or if you need to match a factory orange peel to perfection. That said I was using a TIP turbine bought 20 years ago, so maybe they have improved , but no matter what will be limited with just one pressure setting for certain color matches.

    Friends and Samcrac, don't believe it when you're told that heating the air removes moisture. I sold all sorts of industrial air compressors and blowers for thirty years, and I can tell you with all certainty: "all moisture that comes into your compression system with the air comes out the other end in the form of vapor or spray, unless you remove it with either specialized filtration, desiccant, or refrigeration." Heating the air makes sure that the moisture stays in vapor form, but when you expand compressed air, like at the spray gun nozzle, you cool it rapidly, and the moisture has a tendency to reform into tiny aerosol droplets. Many body shops have refused to believe this ever since the introduction of pressure painting, but they continually fight the battle against "fisheye" as a result.

    • @jadarroch
      @jadarroch 5 років тому

      That is exactly correct. Since Apollo turbines don't compress the air to start there is no squeezing the moisture out. The problem with compressors is the hot air is pushed into a tank to cool before it's used. This is where the water builds up and why it's then transferred into the air lines. With a Turbo Spray System, there is no tank and no compressor. The air is heated as a result of the high speed motor that is spinning in excess of 22,000 RPM. The air is heated as it is pushed through a series of fan blades to he point where it is well over 100 degrees fahrenheit. As a result the humidity in the air is reduced considerably. The air coming through Sam's turbo spray system is less than 10% without the needs for filters. The 5-stage system produces more than 60CFM, but under 10PSI.

      By the time you add filters, dryers and a spray gun to a large enough air compressor you will spend more than $1300 unless you go to your local discount tool store and buy something from China.

    The only way to use a compressor to paint is with a air dryer unit. That is separate from your compressor. Then you need regulated lines that have drains. That's what I used had no issues. But your system is by far cheaper and very effective. Definitely the best way for a DIY painter..

    Love the booth!!! I too use a turbine system for work doing bumpers and parts for dealerships. From fords, Chevy, all the way up to Cadillacs bmws all that. You should invest in the 3M turbine paint guns very easy to clean and use. Preferably the higher end ones that's what I use. 3M's system is awesome they have disposable cups in various sizes and the guns last very well as long as you clean them after every use. Love your videos btw! Keep it going

    • @jadarroch
      @jadarroch 5 років тому +1

      3M no longer makes their turbine system or spray gun. You can use their PPS system with the Eastwood turbine, so you have all the same benefits and the Apollo spray gun gives you equal if not better results.

    • @jadarroch
      @jadarroch 5 років тому +1

      @@arnolvaquero5391 The only way you will find the Accuspray guns is if a dealer happens to have some left in stock. 3M has not been making any turbines for over a year now. Keep that in mind as getting parts down the line is going to get harder and harder. Might want to consider an AtomiZer instead.

    Don’t use dish wash. Use proper panel wipe as this will clean contaminants from the surface better and flash off quickly. You can add rocket additive to speed up the basecoat drying process otherwise just be patient. Getting some warm air though your booth not a bad idea. Ultimately there’s no substitute for a good Dalby booth!
