I realize you're cutting the clear coat surface to get a good, uniform bond. Is there a deeper or more extensive prep required for a complete color change?
Just like you said prep the surface to be flat and uniform before paint making sure all the edges are scuffed up as well. For color change i would prep entire car with 600 grit, apply proper gray shade sealer, base coat and then clear.
Ppg has top of the line paint and color matching system, and simple tinting guide so that makes our colors match like Oem. This one was difficult because the front end has been previously repainted elsewhere. But the door and quarter were original so my color blended out nicely 👍🏻
Proper clear-coat hardener and reducer depending on temperature and size of the job. Secondly is proper airgun pressure and overlap. But most importantly is a nice flat and uniform prep of all the surfaces, then each layer must be Uniform and even, starting from sealer and basecoat. If you apply your sealer or basecoat uneven or rough, your clear will never lay out like glass. Each layer builds up and creates a little orange peel as you go, so you want to keep the buildup to a minimum.
This job was $5k, the quarter had severe damage that was repaired, same with front bumper and rear bumper, blended door, fixed dents around the car (PDR) and repaired curb rash on wheels. Freshened it up 😁🙌🏻👍🏻

You all have the paint booth but no oven to dry the paint quicker than naturally in the booth?
We have heaters on the side, but we are not high production shop and focus on our jobs, instead of quickly trying to get them in and out!
