Nah, he was in his 20's when he got this - clearly just came from so much money that it wasn't a big deal - and when he lost interest in it he just tucked it away - like us normal middle class people might pack away our childhood toys in the attic. For the cable under the car, going to the rear brakes, it is for the parking brake. Since this is a European car, this was a common way to attach the handbrake lever to the rear brakes on a car. I owned a Peugeot 205 GTI, and it had more or less the same system for the parking brake.
@22:44 - As AWESOME and iconic a design for a supercar that ever was. It still inspires and turns heads! I had a friend who had one of these, back in the late 80's, as well as other cars like Ferrari's and such. He said if you want to get out and drive a fast car on a regular basis, then the Ferrari was more fun to drive. If you wanted to simply get laid, just pull up, anywhere, and sit or stand near your Countach. I remember some years ago, a little over a decade now, when Mario Andretti's 1989 Anniversary Edition was sitting in a showroom in Fort Lauderdale. Gorgeous!!!
So glad you've done your own video of this, as I watched "Curated" video and really felt it lacked that personal touch. You always manage to bring the human element into the story behind the car, and your commentary on the restoration process adds so much to the video giving details behind decisions made, and the reasons why you're doing things... much appreciated Larry. Oh, and the Red October reference.... gotta love a bit of Sean.
Could be anything, a lot of the time it's a memory of something particularly painful. I assume the fact that he left his dads car in the way he has aswell as the Countach it could be related to the passing of a loved one. Seeing it is a painful reminder of them, but to not see it would be equally as troubling. Or it could be that he hated the way it would drive, but loved the aesthetic too much and was never in a position where he needed to sell it.

Amazing, and beautiful, and sad to see it so neglected for so long. Glad you could clean it up! That parking brake isn’t surprising to me at all, except it seems to be in a very vulnerable area just under such a low car. The mechanism’s geometry is quite common.
Great work. Really enjoy your videos. I know it's difficult to show everything when doing a video like this but I would love to get a true feel as to the how much time and effort really goes into a project like this. How long (hours and days) does this actually take? A BTS time-lapse of what you have to do in your garage afterwards to keep it clean showing the depth of how involved that process is would could be really interesting. At least to me. lol. Thanks again. Looking forward to next one.
It's so cool that there are people who put this level of attention to detail in their work! This was a very interesting video to watch about one of my beloved unicorn cars from my childhood.
I just watched a guy clean a car for almost a half hour and wished it was longer 😂Very well done! Reading the comments it is really cool to see how many fellow Countach fans there are. When it came out I was still a young kid, but it changed the way I looked at cars forever. Still one of, if not the most beautiful cars ever created in my opinion (1985 5000S). A timeless classic that was the foundation of today's hypercar - I was kinda disappointed with this year's remake.. they should have made it more like the original instead of putting such a modern spin on it.
The reason the new versions of exotic cars don't look as cool is because back then the Italian & German car makers had car designers who were actual artists. They didn't have computers to draw the designs. They literally had to draw & sketch everything by hand but first had to use their brains and imagination to develope a design. Today the designs are all done by computer software. That's why they look so artificial. There's no human being behind the design. No thought. No imagination! And that's why those exotic designs of 80's have so much character & attention to detail because they were designed by actual human beings. The artist who's responsible for the 85 Countach said he came up with that particular design because one day Ferrucio Lamborghini had a meeting with his designers and told them he was sick and tired of the same old car looks. He said everything looked either like a bubble or a box. He said Ferrucio told them to come up with something futuristic. He said Ferrucio gave them pictures of satellites and space ships and said "think about drawing something like this but with wheels on it" lmao!! Well they came with the only possible such thing when they drew the Countach. The lead artist said they also were tired of the bubble or box look as well & decided to think "outside the box" & go through the Unicode block of geometric shapes & symbols for their design on the Countach and it DEFINITELY shows. The influence of that Unicode block is all over the Countach & then it was copied later by Ferrari, Porche & Lotus. As an artist myself, I immediately noticed the geometric pattern of quadrilaterals & hexagons. Sort of a fusion of the 2 shapes. Look at the rear lights. They are hexagonal shaped. The windows too. In fact that pattern is EVERYWHERE on the Countach from interior to exterior. But these are not a standard hexagon shape, it's a quadrilateral/hexagonal combination. Once u notice that pattern in the design of the Countach, then u can't stop unseeing it everywhere. It's brilliant. It was so well thought out, deliberated, implemented, and drawn by man. But the finished product couldn't have come about if not for a thought. We all know that computers don't think. They compute. And that's the difference between that eras exotic car designs & today's.
I can't imagine owning such a beautiful car and letting it go for so long without cleaning it from time to time, and letting rodents take over. Glad to see you doing an amazing job cleaning the Countach.
@@strangeclouds7 i think its one of those things..out of sight out of mind.. and it probably has some problem that makes it a big investment to fix..no one wants to spend $20,000 to 50,000 to fix a car....so you know the car is worth something but just expensive enough to keep putting it off... and never checking in on it enough to see what the mice have done...
Some people have too much money & lose interest as they buy more unnecessary crap. It’s a shame to see a valuable vehicle like this left to rot for 20 years 😢
Good job! What a mess! A few years back I detailed a 2012 BMW that had been stored on a ranch with pet food bags in the trunk. It was far worse than this. I removed the back seat and recommended she have the dashboard disassembled as there were nests in all of the vents. Mouse damage is the worst! Glad you didn't get Hanta virus!
Hey Larry! Absolutely loving the content lately. Would you be able to do an update to your 2-bucket/at-home wash tips video from a while back? Curious if any of your suggestions have changed after 6 more years of experience and progress with materials and products. Thanks for sharing all you do!
Amazing job! I stood next to this particular Countach for a picture as a young child at the Toledo OH Autorama in circa ~1985/1986! That experience, just standing next to it, kicked off a forever love of cars! I drew this car hundreds of times after visiting it 👍👍
That’s crazy, I’m from Toledo. A detail shop here years ago had a Diablo that sat out front of the building and as I kid I would beg my mom to stop on the way home from school so I could take pictures and look at it
The only "super-car" I ever dreamed of having as a kid and still do till this day. Muscle-car guys like myself drool over a 1969 dodge challenger but a Countach will eat your heart out. And you'll get more than just "nice car" from the ladies.
I loved the restore detail and you killed it. That said, the few areas that still bother me since they were never shown in this clip, is how much of the same mold and grime is behind and under the seats, dash and center console. The majority of these should have been completely removed from the car and an Ozone machine should have been used inside the vehicle to kill everything living on the microscopic level. I would genuinely be uncomfortable sitting in this car or even using the climate control considering all of the nastiness is sitting inside the piping and vent systems as well.
I got the impression that this was just an initial cleanup before going to get properly restored. It is a bit strange how they did the polish and everything first though, you'd think they'd save that until last.
Stumbled upon your channel when you just got started years ago and it’s amazing to see where this journey took you - kudos and congrats to you, Larry! I learnt a lot and love your videos. One question about the lighting in your studio though: why didn’t you install parallel “lines” of light sources like all manufacturers car design studios have to better read the surface instead of the hexagons in just one bay?
I can't comprehend how this car was left to be a mouse toilet for so many years. It doesn't cost much to prevent this. Especially on one of the most iconic cars in automobile history.
I love your videos!! The before and afters are so amazing! just wondering if and why doing the inside first would be a good or bad idea. it seems like a good idea because you save the outside reveal for last, which is the biggest reveal.
LOL! This guys comment reminded me of the mechanic on Seinfeld when he took off with Seinfeld's Saab because he felt that Seinfeld was neglecting it. Gold Jerry, GOLD!
Immoral to leave this amazing work of art, design and engineering to rot away in a non-conditioned space and creating a 4-legged hotel/outhouse. Beautiful commitment to bringing it back from the abyss.
WOW, so glad I stumbled across you and your channel. LOVE it, takes me back 28 years ago when I had my own little detail shop. NOTHING like what you're doing but still cool. How much would someone expect to pay for a detail like the Lambo got?
This is part of the reality of supercars. They are great until you have a mechanical issue, or need to change a lot of service items at once. Owners stung by the price park them up except for special occasions. But the stinging cost is still in their mind, so special occasions are few and far between. That is how barn finds are born, and why a large proportion of supercars are still out there. Cars with a more economical cost of ownership like muscle cars are more likely to be run to death.
The transformation is amazing. Nice work! Curious how you buff around badges and lettering? I've seen ebrake wheel and cabled like that on several cars, so not too uncommon for cars of that era and earlier.
Yes, I would like to know it too. But reading the comments I start to realize he just gave up because it was too expensive to repair it. My question is that why he wouldn't sell it? Someone who can take care? Maybe he was waiting for a better price but for what cost? He didn't even cleaned it! It's not a big deal to do it time to time. Anyway, this story only makes me sad but hopefull
It looks like the last time it was used was a hell of a night whith strippers and lots of alcohol, and the guy even got a shot glass souvenir and a girls jeans
They evidently had common sense. They are a piece of junk - though I accept the iconic impact of the car. My brother bought one (new) in the 80s. He got rid of it within a few months - they really were an appalling car.

As a car guy with over 20 years of paint & body experience I commend your efforts and determination. Something like that Lambo surely deserves time to do it correctly and in that condition demands that time as well.
Simply incredible. Sad, but this seems to becoming more common in the fast paced world we now live in. People just get sidetracked in life and it leads to amazing stories like this.
Nah, he was in his 20's when he got this - clearly just came from so much money that it wasn't a big deal - and when he lost interest in it he just tucked it away - like us normal middle class people might pack away our childhood toys in the attic. I'm sure he loves the car, but it's clearly just not something he has any real passion for (I mean look where he put the jack for Christ sake! God that made me cringe!), and probably never really did - it was just one of his many, many possessions.

@@bedlambikes Oh sure he gave some fucks, enough that he had plans to do some work on it - but clearly not enough fucks to see it through - and he's lost interest as the years went by. Again this is like a normal person buying a kitset RC aircraft or something intending to build it and fly it... and then leaving it on the shelf for a couple of decades before selling it on ebay. I'm just trying to explain why someone would let a car worth hundreds of thousands of dollars sit around rotting for 20 years to people for whom hundreds of thousands of dollars is a big deal.

Yeah did that guy ever say why he just let it sit like that? Am I missing something?
@@strangeclouds7 i think its one of those things..out of sight out of mind.. and it probably has some problem that makes it a big investment to fix..no one wants to spend $20,000 to 50,000 to fix a car....so you know the car is worth something but just expensive enough to keep putting it off... and never checking in on it enough to see what the mice have done...

Immoral to leave this amazing work of art, design and engineering to rot away in a non-conditioned space and creating a 4-legged hotel/outhouse. Beautiful commitment to bringing it back from the abyss.
At least it was kept indoors.
Leaving a Countach inside a barn for 20 years is a crime of humanity.
WOW, so glad I stumbled across you and your channel. LOVE it, takes me back 28 years ago when I had my own little detail shop. NOTHING like what you're doing but still cool. How much would someone expect to pay for a detail like the Lambo got?
The fact that someone kept this masterpiece of an automobile rotting away in a garage for 20 years simply boggles the mind!
Yeah Mercedes 190er from '80s-'90s had similar handbrake setup1
We all want to know the back story why did he park it and let it sit for so long.
