So glad you listened to the studio version of this song. Elvis's speaking voice is as mesmerizing as his singing voice. Check out (1) Elvis Presley - Softly, As I Leave You. He recorded Take My Hand, Precious Lord at the age of 22 and you can see him perform (2) Peace in the Valley on The Ed Sullivan Show at age 21 or 22. For songs of lost love recorded at age 18and 19 try (3) Elvis Presley - That's When Your Heartaches Begin. (Private 1953) and (4) Elvis Presley Harbor Lights (Original 1954). He also whistles on this one. I think he was one of those kids who had an old soul. (5) Old Shep by Elvis Presley 1956. This is the song he sang in a talent show standing on a chair to reach the microphone at the age of 10. Sorry this comment is so long, but I hope this gives you insight on Elvis's versatility even from a young age.

Love your reaction Harri. Check out an incredible later live recording of this song called Are You Lonsome Tonight Laughing Version. It is a unique moment in which Elvis, seeing a man in his audience adjusting his hairpiece, started to crack up uncontrollably. Amazingly, Elvis' backing singer Cissie Houstan, mother of the legendary Whitney Houstan, kept going, never missing a beat while Elvis was tearing up all the more at her utter professionalism. it is an incredibly funny recording and one that really has to be heard to be believed.
It is a unique outtake that was released as a single record in the UK, where it shot to Number 1 in the charts.

His diction is impeccable. It hits me that one feature of Presley that possibly has something to do with him being popular is that, unlike an Opera singer or Roy Orbison whose art is making it look so easy, he so often takes a note to the brink and (subconsciously) for a moment you think he's going to fail to get the note - but he doesn't fail.
By the way, spot on with your comments.
