I remember watching an old interview with Elvis, probably in the early 70's or so, and the interviewer asked him who he thought was the best between him and Roy Orbison, Elvis didn't even pause and said "Roy Orbison is the best singer in the world" . High praise from the king :)

A masterpiece released by Roy in 1961. A song without a chorus, the lyrics, arrangement and vocals all gradually build to a climax in this song. The exaggerated dynamics, with the exceptional strings and orchestral build up drove this song to Number 1. It was the last song he sang live in a Cleveland venue, 2 days later we lost a brilliant singer. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Craig. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Imagine if you can, living the generation that Orbison inspired...he was phenomenal

    • @kspkap6552
      @kspkap6552 11 місяців тому +3

I don’t have to imagine…I lived that generation. I became a teenager in 1956. The big band era was behind us. “Swing” came into vogue giving rise to what became known as the “bobby soxers”. Vocal groups like the Ink Spots, the Platters and “crooners” with their soft intimate singing had us dreamy eyed. We were falling in love with Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, etc. We put Lawrence Welk on the back burner and watched “Your Hit Parade”. The new sounds were fantastic! We all wanted record players so of course 45’s were flying off the shelves. The stage was set and we were the players in what was to come. We were ripe for the picking.
All of a sudden there was this guy from Memphis, Tennessee who had a new style of singing along with sexualized movements below the waist. Combine those movements with a drop dead gorgeous face, smoldering eyes and lips you wanted to taste, well, as was stated in the movie “Elvis”…we “wanted to eat him alive!” He awakened thoughts and feelings we shouldn’t have had at such a young age. Those thoughts and feelings have stayed with many for 67 years. As John Lennon said “Before Elvis there was nothing.”
From Elvis we had Roy Orbison who sends chills up my spine while tears are forming in my eyes (no one like him & never will be), the Everly Brothers (you can’t make perfection more perfect) and many others. Yes, I am so very grateful for being a part of the generation Roy Orbison inspired. A generation whose music will continued to be played for decades to come.

Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Crying", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou", "Candyman", "Uptown" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the Traveling Wilburys (a rock supergroup) with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne.

i was 10 when his first song hit...saw him live around 1980 in hamilton, ontario and, incredibly, he sounded better in person. if you wanted to hurt and bleed after a breakup, orbison sounded like he was singing directly to you. he toured britain and performed on the same stage as the beatles before they became THE BEATLES world wide famous....he was the star and was supposed to close. after he heard them he told them they should. beatles never forgot that. i saw ringo star on a talk show quite a few years ago--arsenio hall?--and he said, 'everybody was in awe of the beatles. who awed the beatles?' and ringo said, 'roy orbison'.....

The voice..stayed with me. no-one like him before or since. Apparently an absoulute gentleman ...genteel, kind and well mannered. He just stood there and hardly opened his mouth, but the sound . Boy Dylan when part of the Trvelling Wilbury's said that Roy's voice sent shivers down his spine. "Man that voice" he said. It has been said that grown men have cried lsitennng to Roy's voice.

Roy was one of the first songwriters in popular music to 'break the rules'. You're 'supposed' to have a song structure where you have verses, a chorus and maybe a middle eight, or something along those lines. He usually did that (think 'Pretty Woman'), but this song is just a few verses of one type, and then a second section that I"m not even sure how to categorize. 'In Dreams' is the best example - it's just one part leading to another part, and I have no idea how you'd categorize each little section. He didn't care about what anyone thought he was suppsoed to do, he wrote what came to him and what felt right.

Funny You brought up Elvis...They were good friends and Roy was going to open for him.
Elvis told him he was to good to open for him,and replaced him.
No hard feelings, all good...Elvis Loved his voice ❤️

There's a nice documentary about him called "Mystery Girl Unraveled", if anyone is interested.
A great display of his smooth voice is a song on here called Roy Orbison: "River" from "The Fastest Guitar Alive". Just a song for a film I think..but man is it good.

Love your reaction Harri 🥰. My older brothers were fortunate to see Roy O live around the time of this incredible song was recorded, this concert took place in a small community Arena in Edmonton, Alberta 🇨🇦& I think Diana Ross & The Supremes were there as well ! I am still amazed that these incredible singers actually came to our small northern town in Canada back in 1961 , 💎💜💎💓

I think this is my favorite Orbison song. The wobble in his voice and the buildup to those last notes. Perfection.

I saw Roy in concert in Miami just about a year before he died. When he did "Running Scared", with the repeat ending, the audience went crazy. Best concert ever!

Roy opened for the Beatles at one point and he upstaged them. They just wanted more Roy Orbison.

Back in in the early sixties, the music industry producers were probably screaming at them- "2:11, we will never get this song to play on the radio, cut it shorter!"

    Excellent and touching review.
Could Elvis have recorded this song? Yes, he had the voice to do it, just listen to his recording of "He touched me" from one of his gospel albums.
Operatic? Again yes. Roy was rightfully called the Caruso of rock/country/ballads.
Roy used to end his show with this song because of all the encores the audience demanded.
One of a kind was Roy Orbison.

another terrific reaction Harri, and don't worry about your "over enthusiasm" every now and then I'll catch a reviewer, probably a very nice guy (they're almost always men) who sit there completely stone faced then at the end will say something like "well that was a good one" which to me is no reaction at all. I may have mentioned I DJ some weekends and I'll put this on every now and then and you would be amazed at how many early 20's people will come up to me and tell me how much they would love to hear some songs like this today. Good music is timeless, and Roy was one of the best, have a good day

I've read that Roy had a 7 Octave vocal range. That is the first time I've ever heard that was even a possibility. I always thought Roy had an amazing voice!! That would explain why 😃 Awesome!!
