Ann just had one of those one of kind voices you can't even explain. Amazing instrument. And the look on stage. To us back then it was more than you could take in that rock goddess hair, makeup, costume when they were young. Overload. Have you done Abba Dancing Queen. I know we're all about rock, but it could be an interesting review. The octave change they say was just unreasonable, but those girls pulled it off.
If you think those lyrics are steamy listen to “Crazy On You”! “There's nothin' left to do at night But go crazy on you Crazy on you Let me go crazy, crazy on you, oh” 😊
@@BLACKBIRDsqueaks The eponymous album from 1985 was my high school jam - getting to play with them a decade later definitely qualifies as a career highlight!
The sad irony of this era of Heart was that while they were putting out fantastic records, the record company was treating Ann like garbage due to her weight. She's on record saying that she was utterly miserable during the late eighties/early nineties period. She is a goddess no matter what; the greatest female voice in rock history.
Yes, to all of that. You can see in the video production, there are almost no non-closeup shots of Ann, and the few that occur, are either from a distance, or she's in shadow, or both. Her hair was styled to make her face appear slimmer. The video production works really hard to hide the weight gain. That was pretty awful treatment of her, and typical of media marketing, especially of the time, but something that still happens today, and especially to women. Never saw Meatloaf getting the "you're just too fat" treatment, and Ann Wilson is a thousand times more gorgeous than him on any day, no matter what her weight. She is indeed a goddess, both in appearance and in voice.
Agreed. They treated her horribly. They also treated Nancy horribly. She hated all those skin tight outfits and the big hair. The 80's brought them a lot of success but not a lot of happiness.
The record companies had one arrow in their quiver in the 80s and 90s.... They tried to make every female artist a sex symbol. They didn't look at how talented they were... If Heart wasn't an established force from the 70s, if Ann didn't have the outstanding voice and talent... I'm sure they would have pushed to replace her with someone they could promote in a skimpy outfit. They did that to Martha Wash for the song Gonna Make You Sweat... They used Zelma Davis lip syncing in the video and didn't even credit Martha until she sued and got them to give her credit.
It's maudlin to think about, but I've always wondered if part of what Robert is tearing up about is the fact that he can't hit those notes anymore. It's a beautiful thing to see such talented people paying tribute to you, but knowing you used to be able to hit those notes and can't anymore must be heartbreaking (no pun intended).
I am a die hard Zep fanatic... I despise anyone who even mentions wanting to attempt a Zep cover... I will forever allow Heart Zep covers to grace my ears.
Nancy's singing on 'These Dreams' was incredible and it was good to see her shine as the lead singer instead of Ann. Not to take anything away from Ann.
There’s a video on you tube of Heart performing “Heartless” in what looks like a small auditorium in the late 70’s. That performance has an awesome garage band like vibe to it and Ann has the most awesome scream in a few of the verses. It’s so powerful and awesome, I just love it!
Well as the host points out, the song is structured to make it more powerful and effective; its different than the usual verse/chorus/verse pattern so it hits even harder
I was at a Heart concert. At some point in the middle of the concert they announced that they were going to perform a new song they had been working on for the very first time in public. The song was Alone. And it was electrifying. Chilled me to the bone.
Ann Wilson is one of the few singers who gives me anticipatory goose bumps. It's like my skin knows how amazing what I'm about to listen to is and Heart never fails to deliver.
100%! At first I was just like "let her sing" while she was doing the setup, though admittedly that's completely unfair given the point of this channel. It's almost like once I started thinking about the song I couldn't have been able to even continue on with my day without the catharsis of at least hearing the first verse and chorus. Heart is just so amazing.
The story behind this song is so badass. When Ann was given the lyrics to this song she initially didn’t want to do this track at all. She said “this song sounds like a whiny bitch”. So legendary. Not many bands have been able to last through decade changes in culture and sound. But Heart did it better than everyone. IMO
I know we raised our son on 70s and 80s music, but I didn't realize how successful we were until I was driving him and his friends to an event and Heart came on the radio and I heard five 15/16 yr old boys all scream "Heart! Turn it up!" They are all 21/22 now and regularly go through our records and cassettes.
I learned of John Bonhams death when Ann Wilson stopped Hearts show at the SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. She said a few tearful words and then they tore into an amazing, intense set of Led Zepplin that lasted half an hour. It was amazing. 10,000 people with tears in our eyes rocking out as she and the band proved they were truly a great rock band.
Makes it even more beautiful that they then proceeded later to cover Stairway To Heaven in front of the remaining Led Zeppelin members with the only person in the world who can be a somewhat satisfactory replacement on the drums, namely Jason Bonham!
Two comments... Ann once said that Chrissie Hyde told her something like: the audience will take everything you have to give, save some for later... in other words, protect your voice.... One show, Ann finished a GREAT performance of Crazy on You, Nancy stepped up to the mic and pointing at Ann said "that's my sister", you could hear and see the pride and love she felt... it was good times.
I love watching you react. I'm a 50 yr old male that remains quite stoic most of the time. But when I listen to music your facial expressions and excitement is what's going on in my head. Thanks for saying my quiet parts out loud!
Ann's belt in this song, is one of the most iconic in the annals of Rock music. Everyone who has heard the song before, waits for it with anticipation. It never gets old.
I was at a Heart show and Ann forgot to do the belt. I was telling my uncle just after, that she forgot that part. Just them she acknowledged that she forgot it and proceeded to do it right then.
Please please please, don't EVER loose that (pardon the expression) child-like excitement and enthusiasm about what you do and hear. I know that I sound like a grandparent, but you are adorable with your honest reactions . You don't hide or downplay how something affects you. I do wish that you could travel back in time to see and experience firsthand some of the music and artists that you cover.
Great comment, Wendell ... being 66 years old and having been a life-long music addict (yep, that's not an exaggeration!) and musician, I also hear / see / appreciate Ms. Zharoff's passion. My parents said that that I would weep with joy and hug them when I was 5 years old and the pipe organ started in church, and still weep when good music plays. I doubt Ms. Zharoff will ever lose how music affects her.
Elizabeth's clear expression of what she is feeling is certainly part of what makes this channel very appealing. It totally transports us to a different time when she listens to songs we've always loved.
Ann Wilson has a golden voice! It is powerful, melodic and mesmerizing. She can fill every single square inch of an arena with how explosive her vocals are. One of the greatest vocalists ever. And Heart is one of the absolute best bands in history. An iconic sound from an iconic time. Btw... Nancy gets all the kudos for her voice as well 👌
Please do a reaction for (or at least check out) Heart's "These Dreams"... Lead vocals are by Nancy instead of Ann and Ann does some interesting things with the background vocals, it was Heart's first #1 hit, (1986) it was written by Bernie Taupin and Martin Page and was originally offered to Stevie Nicks. I'd suggest the studio version or "Live in Seattle" version ❤️
You provide what is easily the most intelligent, insightful, informed, accessible music analysis available to those of us who are not professional musicians or singers but simply love music. Your solid professional foundation combined with your unfiltered joy while you experience the music make your analysis videos some of the most positive and uplifting content on UA-cam. Isn't she wonderful? I found her when she did an interview with David Draiman from Disturbed and I'm so glad I did. She's so enthusiastic, authentic, and wow she knows her stuff. Best of these genre of videos I've seen.
Nancy's vocals on These Dream are also so, so good. The 'Live in Seattle' version gorgeous. People forget she had to sing all those high harmonies to Ann's already highs! They are both amazing.
So true and one of my favorite 80's Heart songs. Elizabeth, when you decide to listen to 'These Dreams', and you will have to, check out the Live version from Night at Church, from 2010. Nancy is playing a mandolin. The video is from skyMTV.
When she recorded the song, for the album, she was sick adding a crackle to her voice. When going back to sing backing tracks she couldn't do it. They decided to keep the crackled vocal track. There's a UA-cam video on it. Pretty interesting.
You wait til you hear it live, for real, in the same room. Especially if its the stripped back acoustic version. I'm telling you, that voice goes right through you to your bones. I've never heard anything like it. I was fortunate enough to see them at the Royal Albert Hall the last time they were in the UK and it was filmed for DVD; Two friends and I were in some pretty high seats up above the arena and when she hit the chorus all we could do was look at each other with our chins on our chests. Bloody amazing. And she was 62 when she did that. Exactly the same look that you give to camera at 9:04 LOLZ..... and. 15:32.... and 23:37... It was exactly like that. And yes, to hear the two of them together acoustically, it just rips your heart out and kicks it around the floor. It really is something. I adore this original recorded version for everything that it is and its one of those songs that has taken on a life of its own and means so much to so many people, its a huge huge track. But hearing that voice, live..... she's bloody magnificent, thats what she is.
100% agree - the live acoustic version from the Live in Seattle videos is sensational. I prefer it to the studio version by a huge margin! You CAN hear them acoustic live doing that amazing harmony. The Live in Seattle concert from 2002 was amazing and the videos are widely available.
Can confirm as the wife and I saw Heart ~2010-ish at SPAC and she blasted those notes right out passed the lawn seats. Side note: her sister was just as energetic on stage too.
Great review, friend. I saw Heart in LA, & they were spectacular. This I also MY favorite Heart song. They are one of my top five favorite bands of all time.😊
I would disagree. I liked the unplugged version of a lot of songs. Kron being the top to enjoy. Don't get me wrong there are bad sounding acoustic attempts. A lot change the feeling of the song and that's not a bad thing. That's, IMHO, what it's supposed to do. Covers are another conversion of a song and you get different feelings from the same song.
Yup..saw them in 2015 and the venue was a theater that holds about 1500-2000 people and holy crap that voice sends chills down your spine. You can hear it on their studio music, but live..just wow.
I think that Ann Wilson has the best female "rock" voice of all time. There's an amazing rich fullness to her voice. It's even apparent when you hear her speak in interviews.
THIS is the one I’ve been waiting for since discovering your channel! Ann is my favorite vocalist (no qualifier… FAVORITE VOCALIST) and this song showcases all of her vast skills and strengths. It’s been 36 years now, and I never tire of it.
Normally I would find a song like this to be too sappy. The band is just too talented to let that happen. It's not just Ann WIlson, they are great on every instrument as well.
Metalhead here. I literally heard this song for the first time in about 30 years while getting a sandwich yesterday, and thought to myself “I loved pretty much everything by Heart back in the 80s, I need more of them in my mix.” And then this today. Ok, universe, I hear you…
It is a synth throughout creating atmosphere. It’s also the last lingering sound on the recording. It’s perfect. As it relates to you comments concerning Ann’s voice. She said in a recent interview that what’s been required of her vocal mechanics and style throughout her career, but in particular on this song (Alone), is that this music forces her to leave nothing in reserve. She also liked the fact that “Alone” is a song written for a Diva, which she loved playing around with. Ann and Nancy can hang with the best of the pros in their field. They’ve put in the work for 40 plus yrs. Respect. 👈
Me too. This is just a masterpiece as Elizabeth says and without question my favourite Heart song. Not only are the vocals absolutely killer (from both Ann and Nancy) but Nancy's guitar solo is just beautiful. It is one of only two rock songs to consistently make me cry every time - the other being my favourite song of all time - "Easter" by Marillion. Please, please can you review Marillion and Steve Hogarth's vocals, Elizabeth.
@joannecunliffe8067 - I'm definitely not taking anything away from Nancy's guitar playing. She's a force, to be sure, but the solo is actually done by Howard Leese, the only other original member still around at this point in their career. Nancy's specialty is intricate rhythm sections that often go unnoticed by the fans, but she has on occasion ripped a fantastic solo. Silver Wheels being a perfect example.
@@ianfortier6796 And that's my mistake - as it *should* be Howard who is recognised for the solo. Obviously there are fabulous Nancy moments like "Crazy on You", "Barracuda" or "Mistral Wind". My bad. Thank you for pointing that out for me. 🥰
I’ve been to countless Heart concerts and just Ann performing solo. She is a freak of vocal perfection every single time. Never a bum note. Definitely the greatest of all time.
Ann's voice always bring tears in my eyes. Its like a trigger of emotions....when I hear this song in radio, when Im driving, I have to pull aside and wait, because Im not able to drive. Shes awesome, best voice. Magnificent and magical.
The acoustic version with just Ann and Nancy on stage (best is the Alive in Seattle concert) is just as incredible as the studio version. Nancy's acoustic guitar is perfect, and Ann's vocals are even more dynamic than usual.
That one is amazing, but the live version on the Road Home dvd video is insane. This is a different version than the Road Home cd. She just nails this.
I worked at a radio production studio when I got the single CD in the mail of Alone. Literally watching this brings back the same goosebumps I had within seconds of just hearing the clarity of the piano part. I turned it up not expecting it to become so intense. I called others into hear it. Bear in mind, it wasn’t on the radio yet. Too this day, there have only been a few such moments that struck me as recognizing instantly, this is something special. Your dissection and amazement is how I felt as well. When Ann opens her mouth in Alone, you know you’re in the audible world of greatness. Bravissimo
It must have been so amazing, knowing that you are one of the few to hear this song before it took over the world. I can’t imagine anyone would listen to this and not get chills.
If you're interested in hearing Nancy sing lead, try "These Dreams." She is also a great singer. There is the official music video and also more recent live performances.
I was going to say the exact same thing. I'd love to hear her take on Nancy's singing lead after hearing Ann. "These Dreams" is one of my faves from them, but I have so many faves from Heart. I didn't get to see them in the 80s or 90s, but I did finally get to see them on the Alive in Seattle tour, thankfully, and they were amazing, of course!
@@fnjesusfreak She was, and they tried re-recording it after she got better, but the sick version was the one they stuck with because it added an extra layer to her voice on the track
This song struck a cord during my childhood that still rings. Amplified actually. Wanted to take a sec and tell you I've been binge watching, and seeing the same excited wonderment of music, But you haven't lost your curious wonder. I respect that. Today, fir the 1st time in years, I picked up my guitar again. 10 yrs as a combat medic...actually had a Schecter in Iraq...beautiful sustain on the heave notes, by the way, buy I've havent felt any emotion in my music since them. It's just been mechanical... To wrap it up and send it, you helped rekindle the fire, feelin and what I call 'spirit kisses'. I know...weird, but there are very few moments in life where the spirit grazes the vale, and the harmony you feel in these pure moments, without pride, without ego, just excited peace....... .....I thought it was dead. Watching your expressions with wonder while dissecting it all down into scientific, building blocks and defining the power in harmonics....deep stuff lady.....DONT STOP ROCKIN.
This song is such good therapy. How many times have I sung this at the top of my lungs on the freeway at night with the windows rolled down, the wind whipping through the car, beating on my steering wheel. Growing up listening to Ann and Nancy back when female vocalists were rare was a lifesaver.
I didn't realize until recently just how profoundly brilliant this song is in really capturing how love and infatuation (and what fuels its fire) feels like from a female point of view. This song (and the video) is just so powerful.
Nancy in harmony with Ann, as the rock kicks in, is so sweet. They compliment each other SO well. Having performed together for decades, it’s effortless.❤️
You have to, HAVE TO, HAVE TO do... the Heart song "Dog and Butterfly"!!! Do the album version. It's an acoustic guitar song and the sisters' voices are just....... I don't want to spoil it or hype it up, but you're REALLY gonna like it :)
That's really good, yes. It's so simple and yet so gorgeous. Dreamboat Annie is another one like that. Personally I'd rather see a reaction to Never or These Dreams if we're looking at vocals. Never is one of my favorite examples of women rockers. Great vocals, bass, drums, it was all working.
Imo this is about as perfect a song is done. Ann's voice, the way she sings it, the thought and feeling in her voice as she sings it. The music is just awesome and the way it's played like everyone involved just got it in every way! It gives me chills every time since the first time I herd it. Just outstanding!
This is an extremely powerful and emotional song. The Wilson sisters more than deliver on every level. The way their voices harmonize together is just top notch. They have another song that's very similar to this 1 you so should do a video on... What about love. You will not regret that 1 either. More phenomenal harmonizing ang guitar playing.❤
100%! Was rocking it out on the drive home in peak hour traffic tonight singing at the top of my lungs- when I picked my teens up from school they weren’t impressed - buts that’s just too damn bad… 😉😁♥️
Growing up in the 80s, I really didn't like these nauseous, overdone Pop radio songs. You could never escape them, and they weren't the best songs the band had. Alone and What about Love are not written by the band.
But I will say some power ballads by the Scorpions never get old, still loving you, winds of change, always somewhere… the song no one like you was right between a ballad and a rocker, it's one of the best.
This song was made for a channel like this. It is practically a perfect song and I love how it gets disected and you hear all of the parts that come together like a well oiled machine.
I would love an analysis of The Dog and The Butterfly. It’s an amazing song. Lyrics are so great, the vocals are on point. It’s completely HEART ❤ You will love it!
These ladies came out way back when it was a male dominated scene , but once they threw their stuff out the world had to recognize that they were and still are the queens !!
Ann & Nancy did a version LIVE with the Royal Philharmonic, It's breath taking and I think she is 70 and hammers the high note and chills go down your spine
Thank you for describing the "N" sound here at 7:28. I have listened to Ann's voice for decades, and have always loved her Ns! Your comment made my day 🙂
Since this was 1987, the piano sound is likely a Yamaha DX-7, which appeared on pretty much everything in the late 80s. It was the keyboard of choice for piano sounds. There is absolutely a DX-7 in there…you can hear it leading the string chords in the chorus.
It's a layered sound, if I had to bet money I'd say, DX7+D50. The DX7 and either the JX8p or the D50 were _very_ commonly layered to add a bit of a string sound under the piano. You could do the whole thing on a TX-rack but it would require particular programming. Would be much more likely to be layered since it's faster, easier.
Such a great song. Nancy has such an amazingly powerful voice. Glad you chose this one! The first 2 words of the chorus, "Till now...", just hits me every time. From the soft opener to exploding to those two words. Love it!
18:00 perfect way to not make a song too repetitive/predictable, they did something unexpected instead of just dropping the chorus exactly where you'd expect it to start. Her beautiful musical shriek is my favourite part of this song. It's in the same pitch range as her sister Nancy singing back up on the chorus, but it's very gutsy and raw because Anne just has more of that.
Literally sat on the edge of my seat waiting to see your face when Ann hit that gorgeous belt at the start of the second chorus - one of the great moments in one of the great vocal lines in all of rock music. The Wilsons and their band are all time greats - one of the best rock bands to ever do it. Great video as always!
Elizabeth, Heart's performance of Alone has been one of my all time favorites for many years. I love this song because of its lyrics, because of the superb performance of the backing musicians, because of Ann's and Nancy's ability to entertain while singing so beautifully. I just love the song - as an unsophisticated listener and fan. After listening to your analysis of this song (and many other songs) where you highlight so many things that must be done perfectly by a top 1% singer to achieve a great performance has doubled the listening pleasure I now derive from this song (and others) and my admiration for those with the talent and skill to give such stunning performances. Many of the comments you make are truly educational and have resulted in a marked increase in my personal enjoyment and appreciation of fine music. In a word, I can now appreciate more WHY I enjoy certain songs so much. A sincere thank you!
Minstral Wind from Dog and Butterfly is the Heart master piece. That whole album is the one. I believe Alone" was written by others. I could be wrong. This is a great song and definitely a showpiece for Ann's abilities.
Agreed, and that's not Nancy on BGV. The album version of Mistral Wind has it all. The era of the original love story between the Wilson sisters and the Fisher bros. But the Live In Seattle version of Dog & Butterfly has the wisdom and passion of surviving the breakups and the painful 80s glam era.
9:44 I don't know if anyone else covered this, but if you're wondering where you've heard this, it might've been It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Season 7 Episode 6 "The Storm of the Century." At least that's where I know this song from.
I've been told that oysters are a delicacy and also that they taste like snot. Maybe there is some deliciousness coming from the nose, but I don't think I want to know.
I have been head over heals in love with Ann Wilson since I was a kid. She is one of the most moving vocalists ever, not to mention absolutely beautiful.
Heart does an AMAZING live version of the song on their live album "Alive in Seattle"... much slower and just acoustic... it's one of my favorite live performances!
Elizabeth's facial expressions throughout these videos (15:07 and 15:31 are great examples) shows just how much she appreciates great singing ability... I love that!
I would highly recommend the studio versions of "Dreamboat Annie" and "Dog and Butterfly" for an almost acoustic performance of the Wilson sisters in their youthful prime.
Both terrific but my all time favorite album is Little Queen. I think with Elizabeth's love of fantasy she'd love the whole album but especially Sylvia's Song/Dream of the Archer. My favorite off the album and I think her most underrated song is Love Alive.
Ann can still bring it. 10+ years ago they did Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center and 100% nailed it. Ann's recent song with Disturbed is outstanding.
agreed. dreamboat annie is ann doing smoky nightclub. they could probably do it over unplugged acoustic but the album version is plugged in and just understated. as it should be I think. brilliant works, both of them.
I love the way they take their signature big and powerful sound and pair it with the breathiness in her vocals to also make it so intimate. They nailed the mood of the lyrics. That overwhelming longing to have that someone special with you as "the night goes by so very slow".
I hear a LOT of influence from the Wilson sisters in bands like Spiritbox and Jinjer, unironically when it comes to the vocals. Very much so in Spiritbox
Male, female, doesn't matter... Heart is one of the greatest rock groups ever. Ann & Nancy Wilson are rock Gods that have worked their magic across decades! Also, Ann Wilson is truly one of the all time greatest singers and Nancy Wilson is one of the most underrated guitar players of all time.
Heart should be elevated to legendary tier with the likes of AC/DC and Rolling Stones, they've been rocking for 50 years now and they still have more rock in them than most youngsters lol Ann and Nancy are the proof that age is just a silly number. Even the natural loss of vocal capabilities didn't stop her, and Nancy is just absolutely gifted so there is no slowing down with her.
To hear the two of them acoustically live together, their cover of “Battle of Evermore” is amazing! They are at their best singing acoustic together. I’d love to hear you react to Nancy singing lead, on “These Dreams”, for example.

If Ann‘s and Nancy‘s voices don’t melt you I don’t know what will… I always get very emotional when I hear alone…that’s the best music or a songwriter can do and hope for, evoke real feelings ❤
These dreams as a 1980’s staple. Remind my of being I the back of my dad’s car listening to mum singing along. Beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. The Wilson sisters are incredible.
The great thing about this channel is; we know how great the rock music is but don't necessarily know why - we just know it's good. You know why music sounds good but haven't heard all the rock music before. Watching you hear something like this (which we've all heard over 35yrs ago) and seeing your reaction, then explaining for us all why it sounds like it does, is like hearing this song for the first time for us also. Because now, I know why it sounds so damn good. I could talk about Ann and Nancy forever but just leave you with this: if you want to hear Nancy sing lead and Ann backing up, check out These Dreams. US No.1 if I remember...
Honestly, I feel like the luckiest person on earth for having discovered this channel, late though I may be. Your analysis is immaculate, your knowledge is evident in every single phrase and, most important of all, your enthusiasm is contagious! 🥰 Even though I'm familiar with most (if not all) of the songs, it's great to hear someone so knowledgeable and accomplished dissect them and express their thoughts and emotions after experiencing them for the first time. It makes me love and appreciate the songs and vocal performances even more and in many ways view them in a different light, even. Seriously, thank you! Keep up the great work!
I saw Ann Wilson a couple of weeks ago live. She still sounds as strong as she did back in the 80’s, and she still rocks out. She did a great show. I’ve loved Heart since Dream Boat Annie and still her new songs are just as good. If you’re a Heart fan, don’t miss her show. You won’t be disappointed. Added bonus, she sang Alone, still my favorite Heart song!
The beginning keyboard sounds like a harpsichord. They may have used a synthesiser to achieve the effect. These two ladies are incredibly talented & imho, Ann is one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. She can sing anything & her tone is just gorgeous. I’m not a Zeppelin fan but you should check out her rendition of Stairway to Heaven. It’s a tribute concert for the band & her interpretation of the song is just phenomenal!
It's Ann's favorite song, too, from the same album. I vote for Elizabeth to continue her Heart education with "Mistral Wind" (album version), with the Live In Seattle version of "Dog and Butterfly."
@@marcocaspers3136In the video it's a grand piano, in reality it's a synth with a piano sound and another overlay which may be harpsichord-ish, but it's definitely not an actual harpsichord
@@roberteltze4850 I think the harpsichord sound that is in there is an overlay on a synth piano sound, if that makes sense - it doesn't sound harpsichordy enough for me to be harpsichord alone
Hi Elizabeth, I just wanted to say how much I love you and your channel. I've grown up with most of the songs you react to and I love many of them still. You've given me a new found level of admiration and joy, and deeper understanding for so many of my favourite songs. I love seeing how excited and surprised you get in your adventures into rock music, it's honestly exciting to watch too. I don't want to ramble on, so thank you again for all that you do ❤ Much love to you and your family from England xxx

Have you done Abba Dancing Queen. I know we're all about rock, but it could be an interesting review. The octave change they say was just unreasonable, but those girls pulled it off.

I played in Ann's solo band in the 90s for about a year - hearing her do this song in rehearsal sent chills down my spine every time
Nice! So cool! 🔥👏👏👏
The acoustic version of this song on The Road Home does that to me!

I'm sure they would have pushed to replace her with someone they could promote in a skimpy outfit. They did that to Martha Wash for the song Gonna Make You Sweat... They used Zelma Davis lip syncing in the video and didn't even credit Martha until she sued and got them to give her credit.
In this clip she looks gorgeous, later she gained more weight, but that never bothered me, what a voice!
I can understand, late 60’s she was hot. Then she just got fat.
Ann's voice is a force of nature! She can go from a soft spring breeze, to a hurricane in an instant!
Love that! Breeze to hurricane in an instant. YES!
Heart's cover of Stairway to Heaven at Led Zeps Kennedy Center Honors even brought a tear to Plant's eye. Simply amazing. Ann and Nancy are incredible
ABSOLUTELY! She was amazing, her voice is perfection!
@@mystic_tacosGreat Van Fleet would be allowed too
I was going to say the same thing. They were incredible!!!!
Nancy is way underrated as a back up/support singer…great lead signer on her own…Ann is just otherworldly
She is a pretty good lead vocalist too on songs like “Stranded” and “These Dreams”
To Quote Christian James Hand:
"THAT'S A DUDE!"
It is actually the male singer of the original version of Alone doing the backing vocals
Much love
@@SrFranciscoDAnconia She also has a solo on the Say Anything soundtrack 'All for Love' I LOVE that song.
Nancy's singing on 'These Dreams' was incredible and it was good to see her shine as the lead singer instead of Ann. Not to take anything away from Ann.
That scream in the middle of the guitar solo is the greatest screan ever in all of rock music.
It's Way before the solo...
There’s a video on you tube of Heart performing “Heartless” in what looks like a small auditorium in the late 70’s. That performance has an awesome garage band like vibe to it and Ann has the most awesome scream in a few of the verses. It’s so powerful and awesome, I just love it!
No doubt Ann is amazing but Roger daltrey has the best scream on won't get fooled again
Well as the host points out, the song is structured to make it more powerful and effective; its different than the usual verse/chorus/verse pattern so it hits even harder
And l read that she totally improvised it, the guys from the record told her to get creative, and her iconic, dramatic wail came out.
I was at a Heart concert. At some point in the middle of the concert they announced that they were going to perform a new song they had been working on for the very first time in public. The song was Alone. And it was electrifying. Chilled me to the bone.
That was in '87. wow
So cool!
Holy shit that’s an amazing experience
Your facial expressions to the music and smiles make me watch all your videos!😊
Oh wow!!!!!! How amazing! It must have torn the roof off!!! What a fantastic memory to have❤
Ann Wilson is one of the few singers who gives me anticipatory goose bumps.
I'm like that just thinking about listening to 'Crazy on you.'
The story behind this song is so badass. When Ann was given the lyrics to this song she initially didn’t want to do this track at all. She said “this song sounds like a whiny bitch”. So legendary. Not many bands have been able to last through decade changes in culture and sound. But Heart did it better than everyone. IMO
Absolutely. The single most iconic and impressive female vocalist in my opinion.
Her voice is as good now as it’s ever been- she is incredible!!!❤
I know we raised our son on 70s and 80s music, but I didn't realize how successful we were until I was driving him and his friends to an event and Heart came on the radio and I heard five 15/16 yr old boys all scream "Heart! Turn it up!" They are all 21/22 now and regularly go through our records and cassettes.
Hii😊
Good parenting! ;) Same with my kids. They're ages 19 to 30 and they all love 80s music. :D
Makes it even more beautiful that they then proceeded later to cover Stairway To Heaven in front of the remaining Led Zeppelin members with the only person in the world who can be a somewhat satisfactory replacement on the drums, namely Jason Bonham!
is there a record?
@@steffenjonda8283 Yes, its on youtube :) Heart - Stairway to heaven at the Kennedy center
@@raymondberg7385 well, that was a tribute song, not the song as they stopped
I did ask for the record for them singing in 1980 :D
Saw Heart playing on the West Coast bar circuit before they released Dreamboat Annie. They could out Zeppelin with their covers even then.
Two comments... Ann once said that Chrissie Hyde told her something like: the audience will take everything you have to give, save some for later... in other words, protect your voice....
One show, Ann finished a GREAT performance of Crazy on You, Nancy stepped up to the mic and pointing at Ann said "that's my sister", you could hear and see the pride and love she felt... it was good times.
said what?
It doesn't get any more beautiful than that!❤
I love watching you react. I'm a 50 yr old male that remains quite stoic most of the time. But when I listen to music your facial expressions and excitement is what's going on in my head. Thanks for saying my quiet parts out loud!
Such a wonderful comment ... I know exactly what you mean ...
Same Here!!
Ann's belt in this song, is one of the most iconic in the annals of Rock music. Everyone who has heard the song before, waits for it with anticipation. It never gets old.
Absolutely, As i said in my comment : My favorite of all time & Easily a 20x repeat tune.
Listen to Wait For An Answer from this album. Talk about belts that give chills. I promise.
Every time I hear that song it gives me shivers. Watching your videos is helping me get through a tough time at the moment. Thank you 😊
I was at a Heart show and Ann forgot to do the belt. I was telling my uncle just after, that she forgot that part. Just them she acknowledged that she forgot it and proceeded to do it right then.
It’s like when the drums come in on In The Air Tonight.
Loose and lose mean two very different things.
I lived it I know it it was amazing❤
I think it can seem somewhat forced
I second this suggestion!
Seconded
Edit:thirded
Beat me to it! Was gonna suggest this as well. Love this song.
Agreed. The notes she hits at ... every second of the night, amazes me
Definitely!! This is another AMAZING song with Nancy as lead vocals. Heart was one of my first loves.
Fun fact: Ann and Nancy Wilson, Geoff Tate, Chris Cornell, and Layne Staley all had the same vocal coach Maestro David Kyle
Seattle Sound!
Yup, as my Dad called them, Seattle-ites 😅
Wow
And Warrel Dane...
Oh? Cool!
Saw this video at 14 on mtv and was hooked for life. Slept out for tickets and got second row for this tour. Caught Mark's pick, still have it

Very well said, and you can say it again. I wholeheartedly agree, pardon the pun.
Greatly said,i learn something every time i turn this lady on.
Elizabeth is a rare gem
Nancy's vocals on These Dream are also so, so good. The 'Live in Seattle' version gorgeous. People forget she had to sing all those high harmonies to Ann's already highs! They are both amazing.
Nancy certainly does not get the credit she deserves for her vocal contributions.
So true and one of my favorite 80's Heart songs. Elizabeth, when you decide to listen to 'These Dreams', and you will have to, check out the Live version from Night at Church, from 2010. Nancy is playing a mandolin. The video is from skyMTV.
This song was a banger in 1987
When she recorded the song, for the album, she was sick adding a crackle to her voice. When going back to sing backing tracks she couldn't do it. They decided to keep the crackled vocal track. There's a UA-cam video on it. Pretty interesting.
Live in Seattle is just so great….
Ann is amazing, we all know that. But Nancy never gets the credit she deserves y'all. Those sisters are both AMAZING!!!
Ann's vocal chords were kissed by an angel. Perfection.
At that time lol heart was alredy like 15 years old when they did this song
That's some crazy tongue kissing to reach the vocal chords. Oh wait you mean figuratively?
Both Ann and Nancy Wilson are amazing anybody who says differently does not know or respect their true talent
How many of us were waiting for Lizzie's reaction when Ann comes in at 18:15 with that EPIC plea/longing?! 💖 🎤
She delivered!!! 🥰
I couldnt wait to see her react at the beginning where it goes from quiet and slow to rocking, it was a bit underwhelming lol
That climax made this performance. Otherworldly.

I think that Ann Wilson has the best female "rock" voice of all time. There's an amazing rich fullness to her voice. It's even apparent when you hear her speak in interviews.
Right there at the top of best female and male voices.
That's why i love the beginning of this song. Her voice is so rich.
Nah. Pat Benatar.
@@careful...Icarus almost forgot about Pat. She can still bring it.
I'd have Amy Lee from Evanescence in the top tier also.
Nancy’s high kick is better than any man’s.
THIS is the one I’ve been waiting for since discovering your channel! Ann is my favorite vocalist (no qualifier… FAVORITE VOCALIST) and this song showcases all of her vast skills and strengths. It’s been 36 years now, and I never tire of it.
Ann’s howling war whoop in the second chorus gets me every single time, no matter how many times I hear this song. Goosebumps. She is so good.
Normally I would find a song like this to be too sappy. The band is just too talented to let that happen. It's not just Ann WIlson, they are great on every instrument as well.
It's her war cry of frustration against this flaccid dirge of a song. Anne is great.
It is unfortgettable❤
Ann Wilson is one of the greatest female singers ever to exist!
Her voice is therapy...
Respect. 👈
One of the most beautiful songs written in the eighties sung by the best female vocalist in rock history
No where close to Karen Carpenter
if you read her book, this is based on an actual situation and the unknown love she had.
Not ashamed to say this one of my favorite Heart song.
Not ashamed to admit that I had a crush on Nancy, after this video
Same here
@joannecunliffe8067 - I'm definitely not taking anything away from Nancy's guitar playing.
I’m seeing them in Portland in September! I rarely buy concert tickets but I couldn’t pass this one up
How amazing!!! Unfortunately we won’t have that good fortune in Australia - but love them all the same since the ‘80s❤
Agreed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That one is amazing, but the live version on the Road Home dvd video is insane. This is a different version than the Road Home cd. She just nails this.
The "whoa" before the second chorus on the dvd is bluesy, and smoky....just awesome.
Just posted another comment about that specific Seattle vid before seeing this. 10000% agree. Literal chills
Just heard that version, and loved it!! Thank you!
This was released in arguably the best year for music. I can imagine how awesome to hear all of the songs, especially this one for the first time.
Greatest female rock band ever.

Ann Wilson is one of the few vocalist that makes you feel her vocals as opposed to just hearing her.
Oh yes. Absobloodylutely.
Yes , but let’s not forget Alanis too!
If you're interested in hearing Nancy sing lead, try "These Dreams." She is also a great singer. There is the official music video and also more recent live performances.
One of their BEST,,,,👍👍👍💥
Nancy was sick on that recording too.
And to think she was under the weather when singing that...
Wanted to take a sec and tell you I've been binge watching, and seeing the same excited wonderment of music,
But you haven't lost your curious wonder.
Let's not forget Nancy singing the upper harmony in the refrain 😮❤
I always think the same thing. Nancy would be a phenomenal lead singer for any band, but of course in Heart she is always in the shadow of her sister.
Tom Kelly, the song's coauthor and himself an experienced session singer, provided the high harmony parts on the song.
Or Nancy's guitar chops...
@@Friskee62 her guitar playing has definitely always been underrated
She does more singing in their side band "The Lovemongers".
There is a beautiful live version of dog and butterfly where they are older and both playing guitars.
That's really good, yes. It's so simple and yet so gorgeous. Dreamboat Annie is another one like that. Personally I'd rather see a reaction to Never or These Dreams if we're looking at vocals. Never is one of my favorite examples of women rockers. Great vocals, bass, drums, it was all working.
yep, one of my favorites
Imo this is about as perfect a song is done. Ann's voice, the way she sings it, the thought and feeling in her voice as she sings it. The music is just awesome and the way it's played like everyone involved just got it in every way! It gives me chills every time since the first time I herd it. Just outstanding!
As an 80's kid (Class of 1990), this song was the quintessential slow-dance power ballad for school dances!!
The acoustic version of this song really shows the power of Ann’s voice.
Ann and Dio are the King and Queen of all vocalists across all genres. I'm glad you finally discovered both of them after all these years.
Heart & RJD are the sounds of my teenage coming of age years. They wiII aIways have a speciaI pIace in my heart. No pun intended. 💯✊️
Wouldn’t it have been awesome to hear those two together? It would be a dream come true
🙌
Agreed
Nancy Wilson's guitar skills are other worldly and unbelievable. So underrated for sure.
Saw a solo Nancy play last year at the start of her Heartless tour. Fantastic show and hard rocking performance.
Til this day, I will blast this song while driving, and sing/cry simultaneously…it’s the only song that does that to me….and it hurts so good.
This is the most spot on comment I have ever read! The song just pulls emotion out of you naturally.
Yeah. How many of us feel that burn knowing that this is not going to go away? The musical expression of passion & anguish.
100%! Was rocking it out on the drive home in peak hour traffic tonight singing at the top of my lungs- when I picked my teens up from school they weren’t impressed - buts that’s just too damn bad… 😉😁♥️
@@joshuakrause2641 I absoluckingfutely couldn't agree more.
The Power Ballad was perfected with this performance. Enjoy!
Yes! This! This song is a master-class in how to do a power ballad.
@@j_freed "What About Love" did have a version recorded by the group who _did_ write it though (as did Alone).
This song was made for a channel like this. It is practically a perfect song and I love how it gets disected and you hear all of the parts that come together like a well oiled machine.
Ann Wilson is pure gold! Even now, in her 70s she’s still got it!

Yeah. Whatever….
Ann & Nancy did a version LIVE with the Royal Philharmonic, It's breath taking and I think she is 70 and hammers the high note and chills go down your spine
Completely agree. This is my favourite live version.
I went to a Heart concert and Ann sang Alone a cappella. Her voice is phenomenal.
Thank you for describing the "N" sound here at 7:28. I have listened to Ann's voice for decades, and have always loved her Ns! Your comment made my day 🙂
I saw Heart live in 2011 and 2014. Ann Wilson's voice was just as amazing 30 years later! There are no words...
She’s one of the best voices in rock, male or female
i agree. Wish people would not put her in a FEMALE singer category.
Since this was 1987, the piano sound is likely a Yamaha DX-7, which appeared on pretty much everything in the late 80s. It was the keyboard of choice for piano sounds. There is absolutely a DX-7 in there…you can hear it leading the string chords in the chorus.
But, if you watch closely, you'll see howard leese playing a fairlight CMI at the end of the video
Love it!
The song "These Dreams" had Nancy Wilson singing lead. Live in Seattle is really awesome
Believe was their first #1 song too.
Dream of the Archer is still one of my favs.
100% Agree
yes, Alone is a cover
Agreed, and that's not Nancy on BGV. The album version of Mistral Wind has it all. The era of the original love story between the Wilson sisters and the Fisher bros. But the Live In Seattle version of Dog & Butterfly has the wisdom and passion of surviving the breakups and the painful 80s glam era.
@@roxann_bam Hearing Dream of the Archer followed by Love Alive on the King Biscuit Flour Hour's broadcast of CALJAM 2 changed my life.

One of my favorites.
Instantly thought of this when she said “I bet they would sound great in an acoustic setting”. 😊
YES! There are a bunch of live versions from the 90’s.
Nobody does Led Zep covers like Heart. xD If they did a Led Zep covers album, it would be a smash right out of the park and halfway across the city.
9:44 I don't know if anyone else covered this, but if you're wondering where you've heard this, it might've been It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Season 7 Episode 6 "The Storm of the Century." At least that's where I know this song from.
Thank you very much for that info.
Bonus Fact: Alone was actually written by the band i-Ten in 1983 for their album Taking a Cold Look. Heart covered it a few years later in 1987.
Yes, and the original is so much better! 😊
And the Floor Jansen version was awesome
@@TheGesturinn Meh, not really. Very mechanical.
Thanks left a comment about that. But couldn't remember the name of the band. 👍
I love the i-Ten version, too
I don't believe I've ever heard the phrase "delicious nasal taste" before. The things you learn from Elizabeth!
Nasal Appraisal! 👃✅
True me neither. Elizabeth will probably be the only person that we will ever hear that phrase from haha
I came here to say this.
I've been told that oysters are a delicacy and also that they taste like snot. Maybe there is some deliciousness coming from the nose, but I don't think I want to know.
I didnt appreciate this song until it was 20 years later and worked with vocalists..... Nancy is unreal! GOAT imho.
Such a powerful song. Amazing how they're all prancing around with their guitars but there aren't any until the guitar solo!
Dreamboat Annie!! 😍 *sigh*
Both terrific but my all time favorite album is Little Queen.
I think with Elizabeth's love of fantasy she'd love the whole album but especially Sylvia's Song/Dream of the Archer.
My favorite off the album and I think her most underrated song is Love Alive.
@@bobfromagr4147 ...great album, to be sure.
I was 19 when this song hit the radio waves. So many wonderful nostalgic memories. I very much enjoyed your analysis of this awesome rock ballad.
I've heard the Wilson sisters in an interview and their voices were just so melodic just in ordinary conversation, it was amazing!
Even though I'm familiar with most (if not all) of the songs, it's great to hear someone so knowledgeable and accomplished dissect them and express their thoughts and emotions after experiencing them for the first time. It makes me love and appreciate the songs and vocal performances even more and in many ways view them in a different light, even.
Seriously, thank you! Keep up the great work!
I love Ann Wilson so much. Truly one of the greatest of all time
Isn't Nancy's gorgeous high harmony a big element in how _hard_ that chorus hits? 🤯🙌🔥 It's positively operatic!
It wasn’t her though. It was sung by the songwriter Tom Kelly.
Ann Wilson is my favorite female singer. She is amazing. Growing up in 80's Heart was my favorite Band. I got to see them Live. Amazing
I still dream to see her live. Grew up listening to them as a child of the 80s as my mum loved them! ❤❤ so glad she’s still increíble!
really? i saw a recent performance, and was super disapoinnted to see her skip that high power belt
@@marinahuizar6067 she was strong when I saw her. I think it was right after a break, so maybe that’s the difference
@@michellepelton1448 I never said she wasn't still strong, she's still amazing, she just skips those high belts, lol
Ann's speaking voice without singing is unbelievable you should hear her interviews her voice and word pronunciation is one you should hear!
To hear them harmonize acoustically try “Dog and Butterfly” from Live in Seattle. Brilliant
That one is my little sister's absolute favorite song by them. Good suggestion!
It's Ann's favorite song, too, from the same album. I vote for Elizabeth to continue her Heart education with "Mistral Wind" (album version), with the Live In Seattle version of "Dog and Butterfly."
I totally agree
I totally agree
@@youbertu Some of their prettiest harmonies too.
Ann Wilson is a legend. The piano has a twang to it, kind of like a harpsichord.
I agree, it looks and sounds very much like a Harpsichord.
Completely agree. I surprised Elizabeth didn’t pick up on that.
@@marcocaspers3136In the video it's a grand piano, in reality it's a synth with a piano sound and another overlay which may be harpsichord-ish, but it's definitely not an actual harpsichord
This is the comment I was looking for. Though I suspect it was a harpsichord setting on an electronic keyboard.
