Fact - It is absolutely impossible to look more cool than Elvis did on the '68 Comeback Special.
Cool ? It was 1968 , not 1954 lol 😂
No doubt.
I look cool too, like when I'm at the factory. :D
@@shaunw9270 AND ?
@ Tabonga Well played my friend, well played! Around 68' there were only 2 cool dudes out there. Elvis and Steve McQueen and that was it.
THANK YOU!!! Elvis NEVER claimed to be a guitarist or pianist, but he did use these instruments a lot. He was ultimately a performer (the greatest), but never tried to fake being an instrumentalist or songwriter. I resent people that downplay his talent because he was not those things. Your analysis is intelligent and much appreciated.
I'm glad you told those Joe Biden loving gun banning clowns off Dan. Elvis was no Glen Campbell or Hank Jr that played every instrument on stage very well but Elvis could play a guitar. He was a entertainer, not a Eddie Van Halen
@Miles Doyle Excuse me Miles, this is a Wendy's.
Danny Boy, could not have said it better myself !

actually?
you're wrong.
elvis presley left behind a critically acclaimed body of work in the recording studio, in multiple genres of music
THAT'S the very definition of an artist
his soul, depth and diversity remain unmatched.
ultimately, it's the critically acclaimed recordings that define his artistry.
@@kimbalxyz2
actually?
he's wrong.
elvis's critically acclaimed recordings define his artistry.
just like the critically acclaimed recordings of Ella Fitzgerald, frank Sinatra, etc.....define their artistry.
Such a friendly positive chap the analyser here. Always building up instead of demolishing.
Aside from everything else, Elvis had that IT thing. He was and is special, for sure.
100% correct.
Elvis was soul depth and diversity personified.
He said he only knew a few chords.
No kidding?!
Don't forget that Elvis was a formidable rhythm guitarist for years; the first Elvis band was a three-piece, with Elvis on rhythm guitar and vocals, Scotty Moore on lead guitar and the bass player Bill Black - NO DRUMS, so Elvis had to be the rhythm guitarist playing with a strong heavily percussive style to augment the band sound with chords, fills, AND a percussive sound with a very steady beat; that took skill and great timing, and he had to do it while also being The lead vocalist. The later addition of a drummer allowed Elvis Presley to focus more on being the frontman and rely less on playing the guitar extensively on every song for every gig.
I've been an Elvis fan ever since I can remember (even though I wasn't born until after he left this earth). I didn't realize what a great rhythm guitar player he was until I started playing these songs in my early 20s. Just amazing - natural, instinctive. And he heck yeah, it's very easy to see and hear in this.

That was the best rock group ever.
Bless you dude for not picking him apart but, explaining his playing. Good man you!
Yes, very good video, well explained and honest.
True
Michael Hill : I suppose that people wondered whether Elvis could play because of those stupid, daft films...?! Because in America, I don’t think that question would’ve been asked. ( ?? ) Opinions, please.
agreed, this is what I like about your videos. You are kind, nice, take obvious joy in the moment and don't talk down to anyone. Very enjoyable videos!
@@jimcox3380 e-Elvis could play. Don't think he couldn't. Don't hate on him because he wasn't the best ever' hHe was great for his time.
It’s amazing, I’ve been to every corner of the globe asking people if they ever ever heard of “Elvis Presley” and even the poorest people in Hong Kong and Russia have heard his name and love him! He truly is the most famous and well known artist in the history of the world. There’s even a photo of the KING OF THAILAND visiting him because he was such a huge fan!
Nearly half the world's population tuned in for his Hawaii special.
I was not an Elvis fan until I married my husband, who is his biggest fan. The more I listen to him and analyses like this I'm just blown away by the level of "It" that man possessed ❤ there is no other performer I can think of that is at his level ❤ it's cool to discover my love for this man at my late age 😂❤ he's just so incredibly perfect ❤
Elvis was a rhythm guitar player. Not highly skilled, but naturally good. His voice, his style, his ear allowed him to make good music. Elvis was actually a master at production. He could listen to that massive band he had in the 70s and hear a bum note. Come on. He wasn't the King for nothing. He was a badass.
@Mac: yes, the only king
@Mac: yes, the only king
MAC VENA Elvis was amazing for his time as each generation has their greats. He is known as the king because he was simply a king during his time. He earned it too.
This is what fascinates me the most, that he produced almost all of his music himslef, and that is one hell of a job the way Elvis did it, because he always wanted everybody to play together, so to say "live" in the studio, and he didn´t want the instuments to be recorded the isolated way. And that requires a lot of talent to do it with that high quality standard.
And the soul depth and diversity of elvis is light years ahead of anyone.
As Eddie Murphy said, Elvis could sing a song about lemonade and it would sound cool.
Lemonade
That cool refreshing drink.
💨💨💨💨💨
"Scuze me."
ICE CREAM MAN!!!
👍
Syd Barrett recorded a song called 'baby lemonade' It's quite good!
"Before anyone did anything, ELVIS did everything". Most people don't realize that ELVIS was a full-blooded musician, not just a singer or performer, or the way he himself once put it: "you either have it or don't have it - but when you have it, you have it all over!"
Great quote, thanks. 🎶
I was blessed to see Elvis in concert twice. I can tell you, he was completely at ease in front of a packed house. He was self-taught genius.
what year and where. awesome
What was that experience like?
Elvis could play guitar...but, he was not a great guitarist at all.
What a beautiful smile this Fil fella has, to match his lovely personality! What a credit to his parents 😊
He loved his mama.
One of only two Utube channels I subscribe too!
Yes, I just discovered him. Awesome cometary and one very pretty looking, charming guy.
i love to see him smile, i loved it the most when he was listening to kd lang.
I've often heard it said that Elvis was better than he needed to be. Johnny Cash called him a great rhythm guitarist, and he could play other instruments as well. But his greatest instrument was always his voice.
Ole Johnny wasn´t so bad himself on that rhythm guitar.
I think Johnny Cash once also said, He played better than anyone who moved like that, when he played, had any right to..!
Asking someone's friends if they are a good player is never going to get an unbiased opinion...now, is it? Elvis was a very limited poor guitarist...barely capable of playing this 3 chord basic blues song.
@@realdiamondshow, so you directly contradict Fil / @Wings of Pegasus (a music instructor for 15 years), who says this is a good, clean performance. He even uses the word "great" several times, to describe different aspects of the song (not just the playing). Elvis is picking a lot of individual notes and doing runs, not just playing three chords. It sounds like you're full of it and have absolutely NO idea what you're talking (writing) about. YOU LOSE!
@@realdiamondshow how big is that stick up your ass, and do you think you'll ever be able to dislodge it? Elvis was a decent guitar player, a decent piano player and a very good bass player. He played by ear and he only needed to hear it once.
Don't forget that Elvis was playing the acoustic guitar on all his early recordings. He also played Piano quite well. Maybe he wasn't the most technical of players but he had bags of feel. Phenomenal musician.
Well put
Unchained melody live. Late in his life. He rocks the piano! And his voice makes me cry. Me. A grown man.
John Lennon also wasn't the most technical of players, but he was a fantastic rhythm guitarist. Add in his phenomenal rock and roll voice, plus he was, in my opinion, the greatest songwriter of all time.... As far as Elvis goes "No Elvis=NO rock and roll!" - John Lennon
He plays piano...it is a joke
Only for slow songs can t help falling in love love me tender
And if you look attentivly he is obliged to look at his fingers on the keyboard...like a beginner
We never saw elvis playing fast song on piano
He is able to sing bright tempo but not to play at the same time..
He is not jerry lee little richard fats domino or ray charles
And we never saw him doing intro or solo with his guitar.. he is not chuck berry carl perkins...
He sings bright rock nroll of other rockers but ge need scotty moore or james burton to do the riff the solo the intro all the tecnical part of song...
Elvis only plays by chords and a few chords.
@@mikegacek9182 I'm a 100% hetrosexual grown ass man but sometimes when I watch him I get chill bumps or a lump in my throat, depending on the song

I agree with you it is so interesting thanks fil
This is ELVIS and he did enough for music that he didn’t have to be a guitarist too. He played for fun. Thanks for your analysis of his guitar skills.

Elvis was and remains the King of Rock!
Yaaa...baby
Yes baby
here!!! as welll!!!!!!
Elvis played the best instrument ever created. His voice. His personality especially before the pain was fun and beautiful.
Long story short...He plays guitar like a Singer/Performer. That doesn't make him a bad guitarist, but rather it isn't his thing. I am a guitarist and the guitar comes first to me. I can also play Bass and Keyboards...but I play Bass and Keyboards like a Guitarist, meaning they are secondary instruments to me and only played out of occasional necessity. Elvis' main instrument is his voice and huge stage presence, those always came first to him. Anything else is secondary.
Let's pretend Elvis was also a great guitar player.
There'd be a lot of disappointed people in the audience if Elvis had only played the guitar.
Jerry.
Very well said.
Elvis's soul depth and diversity destroys anyone.
That's why he didn't need to become a lead guitar player.
He surrounded himself with a great band
But elvis supplied the sheer soul and depth and diversity.
An iconic artist for the ages.
That's it exactly.
Well said!
@@chrissimon8368 The problem is that so many people think they can easily play rhythm like Elvis but are hopeless and fooling themselves. Talk is easy, playing fluidly like that isn’t. If only I could find a real person who could actually play rhythm guitar in my band rather than those who say they can but can’t.
Elvis had it all. His voice was golden, he could play the guitar well, he had attitude, charm, charisma, and the dude was so good looking that any woman melted when she saw him.
He sounded like he sang with a clothes pin on his nose. Forget Elvis. What happens to the British accent when Brits sing? I watched a music documentary and was surprised at how many songs from the 1960s were actually by British bands.
.... and some men (celebs) melted, along the way, also 😉.
@@Anon54387 Your opinion of Elvis' singing is a joke when you consider he sold more records than any other solo artist in music history!
WRONG. A lot of women didn't and don't find him attractive at all. Actually, more men seem to be attracted to Elvis than women were/are.
@@hategreed1 Well, I don't know who these men were, but as a woman, I find him the epitome of cool. His sit-down session in the '68 special just oozed sexuality. Yum!
How would you rate Elvis as a guitarist?
Scotty Moore
“Fair. He had a good sense of timing and rhythm. He didn't know a whole lotta chords, but those he knew, he really could use 'em. And he'd play a little bass, a little drums...He had rhythm in his voice, he just had a natural thing about that. He could hear a song, and he knew what he could do with that song. And nobody else could do it. They're still imitating him today but they just can't do it. They just don't have whatever it is that Elvis had”.
" I remember, he was playing a D-18 Martin acoustic guitar and he was dressed in the latest teen fashion, but the thing I really noticed though, was his guitar playing. Elvis was a fabulous rhythm player. He'd start into "That’s All Right", with his own guitar, alone, and you didn't want to hear anything else.
• Johnny Cash, in "Cash, the autobiography", recalling the time he saw Presley perform, at the "Eagles Nest", in Memphis (1954)
Thanks man that was cool. Now when someone as cool as cash notices you that special
thanks for those quotes. i had heard that cash wished elvis hadn't fallen away from playing rhythm guitar, which he thought he was excellent at.
Nice 👌
Who cares? He remains 1957 in my soul

Backwoods Stomp Thank you. I'm stunned by people who think he's not playing even after they've seen excerpts from this performance.
How can you not be an Elvis fan? Who's your favorite?
Absolutley
Really not a fan! Wow where you been!

Not everyone is an Elvis fan. Im a fan but I know a few who are not.
It's a preference thing and it's ok not to be a fan. Nobody can be liked 100% of the time by 100% of the world.
That would be awfully boring.
Fil you are such a honest and I believe humble person. Elvis put so much into his singing. Also so much passion especially gospel. I heard him say on a video in concert he only really knew a few chords. Such a humble being. Thanks for your analysis and honest words. Stay safe and well.
Elvis Presley was a very humble, yet incredible unmatched talent. He never called himself the King but he earned that well deserved title given to him by his fans around the world for lack of a word to give him even higher praise. The man has never been matched in voice or looks. Jerry Lee Lewis tried to convince people that he was the king but he never was given that distinction and rightly so. There was one Elvis and he was a phenomenon.
Elvis was the boss, no one comes close.
The king even.
he wasnt that big, he was just tall, thats all
Elvis was not only sex-on-a-stick (sorry), charismatic with a golden voice, he was also a natural musician. He started the guitar at age eleven and could also play bass and piano, all self taught. Who would think he wasn’t playing the guitar himself? Thanks Fil for a great analysis. Best regards from Austin Tx 😎
I read that he was impotent and couldn't have a relationship? And the arrogance and condescending, chauvinistic expressions? Nice facade though, and merry music
He had a teacher named Forrest.
@@Medietos
He was impotent?
He had a daughter so that kinda shoots that to pieces but I digress, maybe he was in the final years of his life which would make sense as he was in very poor physical shape.
Now as for your Karen-rant about all his flaws. No one claimed the man was perfect but he was far from being an awful human being. What he created brought people together, influenced generations of musicians, and that, by the way, is still the case.
Take a long long look into your mirror and behold your image for about 20 seconds if you can stand the person looking right back at you and know this....
You've done some pretty bad things yourself and I'll bet some of those bad things are downright awful to those you offended.
So get off your soap box Karen, you're not as perfect or as relevant as you think you are.
Elvis has put far more smiles on people's faces than tears throughout this entire planet.
Have you?
I didn't think so.
Do consider spending less time pointing out the flaws of others, real, rumored or imagined, and spend more time working on yourself.
Is that clear enough for you to understand?
Good...
You're Welcome
On the song Baby you're so square Elvis plays bass
@@Medietos You’re pretty for hating on a guy that died nearly 50 years ago.
I don’t know how I even got started on these videos but I’m addicted and can’t stop watching them. You’re so knowledgeable and interesting and you seem really sweet! You’re like a music preacher, so much to say! I love it! Thank you.
Your analyses of Elvis's guitar playing is very professional and in good taste. And yes, not every solo needs to be a shred fest.
I've always found shred fests to be boring. What I look for is style.
for what he is (King of Rock & Roll), he's a decent guitar player
besides, by the definition, "shred" was really limited to jazz back then
Elvis seems like he’s self taught. Technique Nazis always got to find something to critique. The King has one of the most iconic voices ever. Even outside of music his voice will be recognized by people who haven’t heard anything but an impression. A lot of so called great guitarist can’t say that.
You start listening to the guitar but when he starts singing..... His voice steals the show. Stage presence and vocals ELVIS IS SECOND TO NONE.
Fantastic analysis of Elvis's efficient, competent but rudimentary guitar playing. Many would just pass him off as a beginner without knowing that he is actually doing a good job.
Elvis is a one of a kind. This is him at his best. Thank you so much for showing this.
Fil, What I like about your presentation, is watching your face and the expression of enjoyment of the guitarists!
Don Yellen ** I also noticed this.

This performance was huge back then and became even more huge a decade later when it was replayed on TV just after he died in 78. I remember being a kid and seeing the replay of this performance and how everyone in the neighborhood where I lived sat home and watched it, and how some stores and businesses in the area actually shut down when this was supposed to come on TV. It was like a huge television event when they replayed this for the first time after his death.

@@jamespatterson1074 Yes, he died in 77, but they re-played this performance I think in 78. Either way, it was as big or bigger on the replay as it was the first time it aired.
This was played every Christmas. I have been to Christmas parties and the hosts would have it on the TV. Then VH1 started playing it all the time. It WAS a big deal. It was a great Special!
lives and sends secret songs to his fans. Watch the videos of the Dutch singer for me, Elvis sings secretly, a more mature voice and more melodic Look at raised on rock , gospel medley who im.last christmas from Ron jesse.
I’ve had this argument often. But this British guy nails it. Elvis oozes confidence, plays what he needs to and tickles my soul.
The other guitarist is playing the most complicated parts. Any Blues Guitarist can see it.
Not on this video he’s not because Elvis is actually playing lead and giving this song some oomph
Well, Keith Richards himself said in an interview he was amazed that Elvis was so good on rhythm guitar he didn't even need a drummer. It was just Elvis on rhythm, Scotty on lead, and Bill on bass for those early recordings. He isn't in a bunch of halls of fame for nothing.
Keith Richards "himself" wowie zowie!
I am a union stage hand in chicago im local 2. I did setup for the stones. There recovery room had an ELVIS signed LP.
@@robertpourchot5371 Very cool! Thank you for sharing that story.
This really is the beginning of the Elvis's music most know. He got his movie career behind him and focus on who he really was - a gifted singer and performer. James Dean and Marlon Brando were his movie idols and Elvis wanted a meaningful movie career playing that genre as a serious actor. He never got that chance, because he was exploited as a singer. He grew up a lot so he could focus. This concert performance after leaving the movie industry is really who Elvis was and you can tell he is really enjoying himself!!
That is so Very True
An you Sir are lovely Saying it
Thank you for this, Fill. I grew up on Elvis, and I was always given the impression that Elvis couldn't play his guitar like a "real" guitarist. You've respectfully explained Elvis's technique and playing ability in a way that makes me appreciate his talents beyond his beautiful and unique voice. You're a gem! 😘🙂❤️
Long ago I talked to a member of his musical entourage about his music, hove singing, his stage presence, and he said Elvi could play better than he let on, but that he never, ever wanted his music to get in the way of his voice and his stage presence, as, in his opinion, too many singer/musicians did.
There are few performers who can just let their natural charisma and their voice do all the work, but Elvis was one of them. His music was there to accompany his voice, not the other way around. There are many very famous band and singers who would be complete failures were it not for the outstanding music that sometimes overrode voices to the point where no one was even sure what was being sung. Not so with Elvis.
Funny, but when my wife was only twelve, she got to spend some time in a limo with Elvis Almost fifty years later, I'm STILL trying to live up to the impression he left on her.
Elvis did a lot of the arrangement during practice and it would come out like it did in concert
Thats a load of bs

Can't we just enjoy things nowadays?
Elvis is the real deal...there will never be another Elvis!⚘❤
Heaven must have the greatest concerts!
Elvis played guitar on his songs in the 50’s. 2 guitars and a bass. Scotty Moore, Bill Black and Elvis. Tom Parker later discouraged Elvis from playing and wanted him to focus on the singing. Elvis was no Glen Campbell or Mark Knopfler, but he was raised on the guitar and could play piano also. People thinking he pretended are just 100% incorrect. Great video as usual 👍
Elvis had far more hits than Campbell and Knopfler combined. If Elvis had of just focused on Guitar we would be talking about a different artist that probably would not have had the cultural impact that he had.
Nearly half the world's population tuned into Elvis Hawaii special. Elvis did the best he could with guitar because he did not have that much time for it.
A close friend friend of mine who is in his 80s told me that he ( my friend) was in a bar in Greensboro, NC in the early 50s...he and his friends were hanging out and this guy pulls up in a car gets out with his guitar and plays a about 45 minutes...it was Elvis
I agree. Just because Elvis wasn't the greatest guitarist, the fact that he would play live and sound good enough shows that he was for real. Not a fake entertainer.
Great to hear something totally new about Elvis! I'm a music journalist and consider myself an Elvis expert but I've never heard or read such a precise and interesting analysis of his guitar playing. Cool!
One thing that always gets my attention is how Elvis interacted with other musicians and singers. Its obvious how much he enjoyed playing in a group and in informal settings. He shows genuine pleasure and joy with the ability of the other musicians. He was not called The King for nothing but you can tell that it did not alter his awe of the talents of his peers. That is where Elvis found his happiness, making music with his friends.
Great analyses Phil. I'm sitting here trying to think of something cool to say about Elvis, and his music. I'm going to give up, because there isn't enough space on the internet to say what needs to be said.
I was 7 years old when Elvis, and Scotty, and Bill recorded "Its All Right." Of course Elvis is a good guitarist. That song blew me away then, and still blows me away now. It was simply, to Elvis, a God given talent. What can you say? He was the whole package.
Of course he could play. He was the King, baby. Thank you. Thank you very much.
There is no doubt about the abilities of Elvis being able to play the guitar, he could sing and do everything. He was born to perform! Fil, You gave an excellent analysis. Thank you!
Thanks Kathy!
Kathy Prior anybody that tries to put Elvis down the only man to sell a billion album even if people don't like Elvis I challenge you to listen to his voice it is by far the greatest having a base and Tanner listen to songs such as it's midnight diversion without the backup singers last concert version How Great Thou Art hurt Unchained Melody and I could go on and Ever song on that's the way it is album his voice proof If you don't like the song listen to his voice by far the greatest and not to mention the only Entertainer to do a single world wide satellite program with over a billion watching his greatest Talent was his voice

he's a sound what is so amazing is he is still the number one record seller of all time it's a proven fact he has sold over a billion albums some people in these later years have actually tried to take away some his record sales and not count them to let some of their Heroes get ahead of him which is a complete joke since you're a little younger you can check the history you could probably Google this that the week and following two years after he died they had to reopen record pressing plants that were shut down to keep up with the demand of albums he was selling over 20 million albums a week for two solid years nobody in history had the same packed on people in the acting or music industry ever it's just it's been a lot of years now and the younger people don't know this this man was phenomenal even the suits he wore were mimicking martial art outfits so they still look in style of karate outfits are still the same way ahead of his time but I myself am a Christian and if you will look and listen to the gospel roots of Elvis you'll see that he truly was one himself but he didn't follow it like he should have I believe God called him to be a gospel singer with that voice he give him because he set up and sang gospel continually he loved it
Fun fact. This is the first time Elvis played an 'electric' guitar on stage for an audience.
He played Scotty’s guitar on stage many times in the 50’s. for example there are pictures of him using it while playing One Night in 1957.
Fil’s assessment and professional insight is fantastic! Not to mention I really enjoy watching Fil watching these videos, there is always a smile on his face!
Absolutely brilliant review of Elvis. So good to hear praise of the best performer ever to grace a stage. A pleasure to listen to. 🎸🎶🎵
All I know is that if the Elvis of the time period shown here showed up at open mic night, there would be a ruckus to say the least. The guy just oozed cool.

can you describe the ruckus?
quicktastic True that. Elvis was King. He’d stand out anywhere, and if he opened his mouth to sing who wouldn’t be amazed?
Agreed, he was the King of Rock and Roll! Thank you, thank you very much!
My mom was an Elvis fanatic & used to take us to the cinema to watch Elvis every day that the movie was playing at the theater. It was a major influence on me seeing this guy singing & playing guitar to the admiration of all the girls & a few jealous guys fuming at Elvis getting all the attention. I thought to myself that this seemed like a very good job to have & my brother & I pestered mum for guitars for Christmas. We got the inexpensive ones with cowboys on them. Then a tsunami called The Beatles performed on Ed Sullivan Show & we just had to get real guitars albeit still inexpensive catalog mail order ones but good enough to begin taking guitar lessons. I can still smell that guitar as I unwrapped it that long ago Christmas morning! I glued some bottle caps on mine so it looked like it had electric guitar control knobs. It's been a life long journey & learning experience because I don't think anyone will ever completely master every way a guitar can be played. It's very good for brain exercise to try to learn a new songs, decipher new chord progressions or create your own music. Elvis has said that he was just a strummer on guitar. I'm so glad that you point out all the good aspects of his playing instead of picking apart his shortcomings on the instrument. You've put out such good energy in your videos & spot on in your observations & explanations. It's refreshing to see great vibes online. Good on ya,Fil!
This was fun to hear. Elvis is still impressing us! I sometimes think of all the music he could have been making and so grateful for all his songs and music he has shared for the short time he was around. He's still the bomb! He was my first big crush at 5yrs old and I still remember when I heard that he died. I did not understand but I was very sad for a while. I still favor his Christmas song's so much! Elvis is the bomb! Love, love, love, His voice!

The best looking human to ever walk the planet. And he could sing too! There’ll never be another like him.
Gorgeous, charisma, gifted, funny, kind, original, awesome dance moves, astounding voice! Elvis had all gifts in abundance! Astonishing and Fabulous! Beautiful Man! Sex Appeal!
Elvis and Robert Plant, two best looking, best singers ever!
Hey, stop with the flattering. My wife has had a crush on him for fifty years, and you aren't helping.
Okay, fine, he looks better dead than i do alive, but still. . .
yes, the looks, the name, the voice. how did one person it all!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look how beautiful Elvis looked on this video. He has an aura about him that is just fantastic!
What your looking at can also be viewed as the beginning of a downward spiral of prescription pill 💊abuse. Elvis began using prescription amphetamines to lose weight before the 🕺‘68 Comeback Special was filmed. We all know sadly how that ended nine years later.🙏
you have such good intentions Fil. you're always so positive and honest. I respect you on these reacts/analyses.
I have not seen any one else play this tune as Elvis and the band. The way he goes up and down the strings make it sound good and It is called walking blues.
What I have always enjoyed about this session is Elvis's obvious love, of guitar.
Your smiling the whole time you are watching it, I dig that you are enjoying him because i grew up with elvis and you are too young to remember him. The fact that elvis has new fans today is why he is the KING!
Amen!
Totally agree. No doubt that this guy can shred with the best of them, but his open-minded love of music and the joy he gets from it shines through every time
Smilling in absolute awe!
Thank you for your positive analysis my sweet Elvis. It was that rhythm and his suave, coolness, as well as charming sexiness that made him such a superstar. Heck, he still is. Ppl, young and old, love him and miss him. I watch his videos every day.
This is definitely the first time I've watched Elvis from any angle other than his face and showmanship. As a huge fan, it's almost impossible to look away from him and watch his guitar. Well done, Fil. I actually paid attention to his playing!
Elvis was a complete artist, he created his own vocal technique, played piano, guitar, bass and guitar! It will be very difficult to come up with another artist as talented as he is! After all, just by looking at the dances he created in the 50's you understand why so many people freaked out about Elvis, including the Beatles to Led Zeppelin!
Ahhhhhh, '68 Comeback Special. My favorite!
Phil Thank you to be so kind to Elvis, Elvis never claimed to be a great Guitar Player, he use to say I learned to play 3 cords and got away with is. Thank you again, for taking the time to do this,
Dude your analysis and informative video was almost as cool as watching Elvis at his prime. Great analysis and evaluation
Thanks!
He's analyzing elvis through the lens of 50ug of lsd.
It never even occurred to me that he WASN'T playing. I'm happy for those who questioned it that you put their qualms to rest. Elvis has always been famous for his singing and performances. He was incredibly cool. Thanks much, Fil!
Elvis was also known for overdubbing musical parts in the studio. Check out his bass playing on some of the songs
Elvis Presley was not a Disney or corporate creation 'star' as so many pop stars are now days, he was simply 'a natural talent' loaded with charisma and it showed, Tom Petty once saw him making a movie in Florida when Petty was just a kid in the early 60's and Tom said when he saw him quote: "The man had a ORA about him". Elvis was a true "rags to riches" story and an American icon and legend probably recognized on sight as much as Mickey Mouse worldwide, to think hes been gone over 40 years ago now and old and young alike still go to Graceland (still 500.000 yearly) just to see where he lived, its really something when you think about it, not many singers/musicians come to mind that have that kind of interest or staying power long after their death. Yea as you might have surmised I am a fan as well. :-) PS- Great job Fil, I really enjoy your videos.
I lived about a mile away from Graceland in the 60's. We'd see him riding horses around the house sometimes or out in the Stutz, he'd look over and smile sitting at a stoplight.
Then why did he need The Colonel? eh He literally had his hand up Elvis's tookess. eh The Monkees had less assistance in fabricating a career. eheheheeee
@@darrint3573 the colonel was the don king of the early rock music biz.
@@darrint3573 Would have been interesting then seeing what the Colonel could have done for you, I'm guessing though there wouldn't have been exactly the same results. ;-)
Stewart Scott, you said it. I have pictures of me as a youngster in the late 60's/early 70's, old guitar in hand pretending to be Elvis. I remember the day of his death as clearly as I remember the moon walks, the space shuttle disaster, or any other tragedy. Look at the impact he must have had on Petty, one of our era's great story tellers in music.
What a nice surprise, I asked a couple weeks ago to do Elvis, and you replied that Elvis was a copyright minefield, then I see you posted this, thank you
Yeah I wasn't sure if it would work, but thought I'd try!
Im glad you did. I think you hit the analysis on the head. Minefield of copyrights aside...there is a veritable minefield of crazed fans...(me included) that likely only want to see him cast in a good light. 😜
From what we know he was proficient at piano and obviously guitar. He knew his way around music. As far as guitar...he has quite a splendid collection. Not vast mind you...but several nice pieces. They werent for show. He wore them on stage or used them in the recording studio.
Love what you do. Tjis one is especially cool.
Nah, this is fair use for educational purposes. The poster clearly uses the excerpted material to support the points he is making and it is a limited excerpt to satisfy that purpose. This is an easy call.

I remember watching this show. It was great and they had so much extra footage, another special consisting of outtakes was aired. Something to know, if we are studying his playing here, is that he was REALLY frustrated that he didn't have a guitar strap. He wanted to stand up because he wanted to rock but also because he was "cooking" in his leather pants! He finally stood and had someone help hold the guitar.
I noticed a comment from a gentleman that stated that Elvis was smashed on alcohol and pills. And. The gentleman insinuated that that is why he was so good. The funny thing is, Elvis didn't drink. On rare occasions, he might have a peach brandy. Yes. He had an issue with pharmaceuticals, but neither of what he may have taken; simply did not make his natural talent better. He had a God given talent, and no medication made him a better. He didn't care for alcohol. He wasn't perfect, he was a man. An incredible talent, and lets not forget; he had very serious issues with his health. He was also one of the most kind, and gentle souls to have blessed the very long list of human beings to have blessed this world. However, there's never been anyone else that could do what came completely natural to him.
I agree with you. In the beginning it was mostly sleeping pills downers uppers starting from his army days. It slowly got worse after he met Dr. Nick. I believe that was about 1966. Then came Vegas years starting in 1969. All his prescription drug use elevated from there. In 1969 he was still awesome, by 1971 you can hear changes in his vocals and physical appearance accelerating, bloating etc. He got in shape for his Aloha from Hawaii concert. Listen to 1973 Aloha compared to his comeback Special in 1968. A large vocal sound change in a short period of time. I thought Elvis was awesome to about 1973.
Elvis can clearly play the guitar. He had it all, the looks, the attitude, the music and the style. Elvis will forever be the King of Rock'n Roll.
RC Thompson Elvis gives me goose bumps
He played piano as well
The King! Enough said.
did not write music i think.
@@linosammut4634 SO.
Go back and listen to the Sun Session recordings of Elvis all the rhythm guitar playing is Elvis. Also he was 33 in 1968 he started playing at around 9-10 so bout 22-23 years worth of rhythm. His instrument was his voice.
Exactly...those sun recording only had 3 instruments, Scotty Moore on lead, Bill Black of bass and Elvis on rhythm guitar. And record live with no over dubs.
@Brett Stanton Absolutely right 👍🤘
Taught by his uncle vesta a country singer/guitarist
Growing up in Mississippi I was a fan of Elvis, saw his movies.
THIS is my favorite all time moment; this run where he's in the black, has his guitar, jamming with his buds. I sincerely love this.
Scotty Moore’s guitar solo on “thats alright mama” is impeccable! Still one of my favorite riffs! I surely didn’t grow up in that era, however, coming from a family of musicians, i was introduced to the greats early on! Scotty & Elvis were true masters of their craft. 👏❤️👌😎
Elvis had more talent under his pinky than a stadium full of American Idol and active groups (I dare not call them musicians).
You can't fake real charisma.
Elvis had it by the bucket load.
More than enough to influence and shape and inspire many great musicians who followed.
.
DJ - Looks like Lane Harding, current American Idol leader could be the one in Stadium full with the right stuff to carry on, he sure turned the Heat up on Katy Perry but needs to loosen up and move like Elvis or as KP commented "pretend that guitar your is girlfriend", I doubt his playing skills but a young man has time to learn or drop the guitar and take a page from Bobby Darren and just snap the finger's and move.😎
You’ve got that right
D J ..Amen! And that pinky was sooooo sweet.
He had a guitar in his hands?? Didn’t notice~damn, he was handsome..couldn’t get past his face 🎸❤️
YEPPERS!
😂
Yes, there's no doubt about it. He was a good looking man.
Yes the young Sober Elvis in this video ..
@@mikeskidmore6754 Sober? That implies he was a drinker. He wasn't.
The King, enough said
This man is still bringing joy, love and happiness to millions all over the world.
What a joyful performance! I'm happy to learn there was no falsity about Elvis' playing and delighted to see him really having fun. This '68 TV special shook off a lot of the oppression of the string of dumb movies he became very unhappy with performing in. It's a BIG deal that he's sitting down, his famous scream inducing hip swiveling isn't an issue, so he seems even more freed up to be himself. Thanks, Fil, I loved learning about his playing!
Ahhhhhhh. Gone but never forgotten. Excellent.
Great analysis of a fabulous performer. I loved Elvis! Thanks for covering him!
He's perfect swagger, old school new school. Coolest man ever:))
Simply the greatest pop/rock/blues/country singer that ever walked the face of the earth.
You forgot gospel a Grammy doesn’t lie
@@joecoool100 my apologies, damn forgot that one ✌
His gospel records are the best of all IMHO.
elvis presley was a joke
@@ArcadeCabNBud, how many records have YOU sold? I thought so. That makes YOU the joke and Elvis still The King.
Fil demonstrating his depth of knowledge on guitar playing. Great analysis of the king.
I always wondered how he could play piano and guitar without reading music. I’m not a musician, but I love music and have been an Elvis fan since the late 60s as a little girl.
People that have a natural talent can do it without formalization. By the time I was 12 I could do advanced college level algebra without having ever taken formalized training on the topic.
I could also set really good running times without ever actually having trained properly. Yet I really focused on boxing every day with the utmost perfect but could never match my father of brothers in boxing no matter what I did.
He played by ear the way I do
The only thing about playing by ear if you don't know the song you can't play it if you can sing it or hum it you can play it
my grandfather was one of the greatest accordion players in the country and he never learned how to read music. they play by listening to the song and listening to what the other musicians around them are doing.
My mother played piano and organ by ear.
I love how you smile while you're watching the video and thoroughly enjoying it! Thanks for the awesome explanation!
I think he was a better player than he's given credit for.. As mentioned before he played strong rythem on his SUN records. Lots of photos of him in Germany in the Army with an electric guitar. I'm sure there were plenty of jam sessons to learn from. Another interesting story to showcase his ability. I believe it was " baby, I don't care" there's a bass intro that Elvis's bass player Bill Black couldn't get right. He was a custom to the upright bass. The fender bass took some getting use too. Elvis played the bass line that is on the record.
I can tell buy Phil's smile, he loved it.
lol its actually spelled fil, if u can believe it.
Phil ALWAYS smiles!
I’m so glad I discovered this channel. You do a great job of breaking it down into a concise, fair (yet always kind) manner.
I always have and always will love Elvis. Not only did he have the most beautiful face, eyes and voice ever bestowed upon a man, I think he was the most talented performer ever. He was mesmerizing, and I really appreciate your respectful and kind treatment of him - and everyone you critique.
I love your videos on Elvis. I am not musical at all but just love you explaining and setting the record straight with some peoples opinions on whether he playing or not etc . Elvis is so gorgeous in 68 comeback he could play anything and I be right there mesmerised. Thanks Fil. More Elvis please. Michelle. X
