HI Steve. Thanks for the video. I was able to clean my carb out on my Troy Bilt/Briggs & Stratton 875EXi pressure washer but the problem turned out to be the damn screen inside the fuel tank. However, after finally getting the thing running it's died 2x and won't start. First time was flooded so I drained the bowl then had to tighten a linkage spring and it fired right up and ran another hour. Now it quit and there was a short (4" metal linkage) that fell off from somewhere near the carb but not a linkage I took loose when removing the carb?? Are there any schematics for these things? I've googled, searched the manual but nothing.

Thank you, Steve. I have one of these carburetors on a Walmart Hyper Tough mower that was given to me. Briggs and Stratton engine.
Actually, I am a fan of these plastic ones. I found it easy to work on compared to others (limited experience, to be sure). I gave mine a cursory cleaning without even taking out the white plastic cartridge and I got lucky. Mine is running fine so far, but I will keep the tips on this and the other video about drilling out the main jet brass part in mind. Many thanks - I always learn something from your clear and well-explained videos.

Started up a little cold at first , but started running smooth and steady . That video was topnotch , the clear closeups made the fix seem easy , my first attempt with cleaning and boring out the jets in the carburetor of a lawnmower.

You are an absolute legend. Have been busting my butt for weeks trying to figure out why the engine kept dying after a minute or two and blowing smoke. Watched loads of other videos in frustration getting the engine running just by cleaning the carburetor. This little trick solved the problem in seconds. At least the mower has has a complete service now 😂😂😂. Was just about to change the gasket. Saved me a load of hassle. Enjoy the beer

Steve, Thanks for this extremely helpful video. I am semi retired, and originally from Texas and Louisiana, but now living here in the Central Philippines... On lock down of course, on a very small island, with virtually NO decent parts stores and also virtually no tool stores either. Just as an example of how hard things are to get, I sent one of the guys here out to 4 different local parts / tool stores looking for a spray can of carb cleaner or electronic cleaner or almost anything I could get to spray out my plastic carb on this Briggs mower. NOTHING could be found. My guy did, however, see a guy with a used can about half full, back in the shop area and asked him about it. He had brought it over from the big city Cebu, a month or so ago, and now cannot go back and neither can we. Covid lock down means no travel off the small Island I am on. So, knowing we really needed it, he paid full price plus a little tip, for the half can!!!
Now, this little mower (have you ever seen a 16.5" cut mower??????? ha ha ha, never knew they got that small) was put up for about 6 weeks and would only crank if I pumped that red squirt bulb constantly. It was getting fuel into the bowl, but not into the carb.
This was eventually fixed via a very tiny, almost hair sized drill bit from Harbor Freight junk drill bit kits, but it was smaller than 1/32" dia.
And I finally felt it "click" and go into the plastic barrel behind that tiny orifice. Runs great now, and thanks to your video, I knew what to expect, and how to simply "pop" out that plastic cartridge so I could take it into a clean office and work on it until I got it fixed.

Great info Steve! I watched videos for over two hours, but you are the only one who mentions the hole that you can not spray through on some of them, but can do it on others of the same carburator. Also great info on the jet diameter, and how you fixed it. Thanks again. Great job.

Many thanks for posting this video. My Toro model 20339 would only run for a few seconds after 8-10 pulls. I thought I was going to have to remove and clean the carb. As soon as I checked the choke I could see it was sticking. I followed your instructions for adjusting the metal plate and the mower started right up and continued to run. Thanks again, you saved me much time and money!

Steve just want to thank you on this video, I was given a lawnmower that would not start,saw your video and it was exactly like you said, took the carb apart and cleaned it out just as you said,put back together put it on the mower and it started after the second pull , so thank you again for the help

WOW, life saver, you nailed it, your solution worked. Couldn't start the mower for two weeks after winter, changed air filter, spark plug, oil and gas and was sure it was the carb. But I bent the metal so it wouldn't hang up on it that inner wall, I cleaned the heavy dust off the moving parts and hit it with a little WD40, and cleaned off with rag. Back to mowing, with no more stalling! Thanks!!

Hey Steve, just wanted to say thank you for this video. I have successfully fixed the plastic carburettor on my Victa. I tried cleaning it once with carby cleaner only. Then after it died again quickly, I paid attention to that tiny jet you looked at that is often clogged. I used a single strand from some 3mm stainless steel rope to clear it. The fit was perfect, but required pliers to push it through. Now my engine sound beautiful. Thanks again from Syd Aus.

You’re the best Steve. Rock Star. Sorted my 450e B and S engine by giving the carb a thorough clean. A year old and wouldnt run. Tried filters and fuel change and got fed up. Followed you along and first pull.....runs better than new. Perfect.

Oh....and I’m in the UK. Damned “mechanics” here would rather just throw stuff away. Give it 6 months and same problem occurs. It’s like having a car that works okay sometimes, but every 6 months you chuck a new gearbox in because it’s less than replacing the car. SIMPLE engines.....simple fixes. Your video was so clear I tried looking for this problem on my non-starting B&S even though I’m not experienced at this. The problem was indeed the choke jammed, but instead of that lever stuck on the housing it was the two linkage rods binding against each other. Generalizing your advice to adjust for free movement of parts, I freed the rods and this mower then started right up. Thanks Steve!

Thanks so much Steve , I am here in Australia and I have a newer built 725exi , year 2022 model. Briggs have on mine created a slot in the metal so the choke misses the side plate thank goodness. My issue is the plastics mechanism sticking on the pivot point , spray lube has freed it up. But your advice of taking off the cover instead of the carb is such a time saver , cheers to you 🍻, thanks David

Steve: this is a great video because I had this exact same problem. However, I think my solution is even easier than the one you suggested. The arm on the choke lever is plastic not metal. So I simply got my file out and after 3-4 passes across the cam of the arm - the arm files down real easy, the arm no longer hit the metal casing. No grips or bending of metal casing required!
I've got one of these blasted carbs on a 3-year old Craftsman, but I've got the kind with a red primer bulb (press 3 times -- yeah, right). Your video is the first one I've seen that addresses taking the gas jet cartridge out of the carb. Spraying carb cleaner into that tube and the cleaner spraying out of the jet actually worked! I've also enlarged that ridiculously tiny hole, so hopefully, a little bit of junk won't stop the mower dead. Thanks for this video.

I have a 3 year old mower with a plastic carb. Hard starting and surging from new, with 1 incident of plugging. I bought a new carb and it ran the same. Just got a set of wire drills this morning and opened up the jet. It starts and runs great now, even though I did it without a beer. I did it to the spare carb too, in case I ever need it. Thanks!!

I rescued a cheap Wal-Mart mower thanks to this video. I did use a sewing needle to clean that tiny jet. Works so far. Now I need to rig up a kill switch.

Hey all. So figured out my fuel issue with my briggs plastic carb. Followed steves suggestion to enlarged carb fuel jet hole. I got it wrong and used a larger drill bit that was suggested, about .9mm, was too big. I pulled the brass jet out of the tower, macgyvered a .5mm plastic tip from a mechanical pencil and it started right up. Now I need to buy new carb. Live and learn.
I watched Jeff's carb repair video then watched yours to see if they were the same. Glad I did. My Murray died and wouldn't start when I was mowing and shrubs. Bam! A stem had pushed that little metal plate up and jammed the choke!! Saved me time and trouble. Great video. Not the first time you've saved the day for me. Took less time than it would have taken me to down the first brew at happy hour.

I had a no start problem with a plastic carb lawnmower, I lifted it by the handle and tipped it forward thinking it might move the gas aroma, it started right up, I only did this once but it’s an easy way to try!
SOOO glad I have either a manual choke, or primer bulb, on all my OPE!

Thank you Steve! My B&S engine mower wouldn't start. The choke mechanism was sticking against the metal housing just like you showed. I bent it out a little and Shazam!, it worked! I was ready to pull and clean the carburetor (using your video). Now I can spend that time doing something I enjoy doing instead.

G'day Steve. Sadly, I was one of those who changed the plug x2, cleaned the carburetor, changed the oil and retorqued everything correctly. After 5 pulls, it needed carburetor cleaner to fire up. By chance I found your video after searching B&S starting issues. Sure enough, my three year old B&S 625EX series has this exact issue. I used my Channel Lock grips and like you suggested, leaned on it a little to stop the restriction. The mower started very strongly first time, and the carburetor mechanism now moves freely through its full range resulting in more consistent & higher RPM. This gardener from Sydney, Australia cannot thankyou enough. Stay well, regards.

I cleaned the carb and jet cartridge on mine a while back but my mower started intermittently not running right again. Clean carb, filter, plug & fresh ethanol-free gas, so my only guess what was still wrong was maybe something on the choke or governor linkage was sticking? Lucky for me, UA-cam suggested your video. While I had the top cover off checking to see if the sheet metal bracket was causing the problem, I also noticed that the inner plastic shroud on mine was slightly warped and rubbing against the automatic choke linkage (link from thermostat next to muffler that goes across front of engine to choke arm). I bent the metal air filter bracket slightly for better clearance as you described in you video, but I also trimmed a bit of the plastic off shroud so the automatic choke thermostat linkage is now completely free to move without any chance of binding. I don't know which of the two points of contact was binding more, but correcting both areas fixed the problem. Starts easier & no more weird intermittent throttle surging problem.

The correct order of operations is beer first, then mower, then beer again. Great video, I have seen this problem several times.
I have a craftsemn silver 5.0, I pushed the mower under some bushes and it killed, started back up, but after about three times it killing it would not start. I pulled the metal back and the mower starts and runs fine, thank you steve! BTW I was downing Rolling Rock while doing the repair.

I'm glad I watched this video. After using half a can of starter fluid trying to get my Toro to keep running, I was ready to take the carb off and do a good cleaning. After checking the choke butterfly I noticed the spring that held the choke shut had fallen completely off and was laying where I could see it. I got hold of it with a pair of needle nose pliers and reattached it and presto. One pull and it runs like a champ. Kind of a "duh" moment for me, but the video is what helped me see it.

I noticed this problem when I first started tearing apart my Husky weed eater push mower with Briggs engine and plastic carb. I then ignored it and did a LOT of extra work tearing it apart.... I failed to fix it. After a few days, it was eating away at me that I couldn't fix it (pun intended). So, I found your video and whallah. Fixed. LOL. Thanks for the help.

Thank you , on my Husqvarna year and a half ago when Would not start neighbor said clean the carb so I took it all apart and clean the car and then the next season how to clean the carb again would not start , now today would not start would run for a few seconds after spraying carb cleaner in it and then stall out this little issue he showing you looks like that might work very well thanks buddy have another drink on me !

The one have kept leaking from the carburetor,I took a small O ring off a old weedwacker carb which was a perfect fit for my lawnmower fuel bowl ring.No more leaks and its been two seasons.
Great video! Lol! I ran across this issue about a year ago. Picked up a brand new Toro Personal Pace for $10 because it didn't run. Took 5 minutes to fix. Sold it for $215.

Wasted two trips to the Home Depot repair bench at $85 each trip before I found Steve and fixed this issue myself. Called Briggs & Stratton they say the carb is not covered under warranty. I even drank a Becks while I worked on it to make sure I did it right!
