Much respect. I own a small engine repair shop in South Carolina. What we do is starting to be a dying trade. Lot of machines are throw aways now a days. The only way I make money is by fixing stuff and not replacing parts. And the worst thing is a customer bringing something back. You take pride in what you do. That itself is a dying art. Donyboy, Taryl and yourself are awesome. I appreciate the time you put into your videos.

I’ve seen a ton of these Briggs coming through the shop. I tried drilling out the jet with an old micro drill bit set. Apparently I drilled it too big and it ran too rich. But, I agree, the jets in these things are way too small. Experience is a bunch of compounded mistakes.

Parts are getting out of site. I fix stuff on the side. You can’t charge by the hour you wont have a business long that way. Part time or hoppy or just having something to do can put a few bucks in your pocket. Am older and enjoy working on small stuff. Most dealers wont even touch a weed wacker cause they charge almost the price of a new one.

I love your common sense approach!! Repair, not replace. I have a lawnmower with one of those carbs. It just stopped dead yesterday and won’t restart, but will try with starter fluid. I figured it was water in the carb and checked out your video to see if I could drain the carb bowl with an allen wrench. From the glance of the inside of the bowl in this video, it looks like it’s designed to be drained with a quarter turn. If not, then you gave great info in this video to go further. I did small engine repair 23 years ago. But things change. And at my age now, I forget too. Good job Sir!!

I messed around with starting fluid and gas additives for a couple hours on the B&S engine on my power washer, then hit UA-cam for the solution and this video absolutely nailed it. I pulled the carb apart and blasted some high pressure air through the cartridge. That cleared all the small jets and ports inside the cartridge, I put everything back together and it started on the first pull. Thanks for the how-to and quick fix. Much appreciated!

I'm wondering if the gas additive removed debris but then it got stuck in the tiny cartridge holes. Factory flaw, but glad for this vid to become aware.

Just found this video after replacing/cleaning my B&S model 09P602-0023-F1 carburetor (on a Troy-Bilt Lawn Edger TB554) for the third time, and paying someone else to fix it previously. I've had this thing since (I think) 2012 - thought I bought a piece of quality equipment, but it has been non-functional for most of that time. I just purchased the micro drill set and if/when this new carb clogs, I'll have a drilled version ready to go in. Really appreciate the insight here - keep up the great work my friend!

Thank you Steve! I've got a Troy-Bilt with a Briggs engine and the plastic carburetor. For a while I got by by removing the carburetor and merely sloshing it around in a can of gasoline. Then the frequency and character of the problems increased. Most recently I got the oscillating engine speed. That's a nightmare. I ordered a micro drill set from Amazon because I wanted a next day solution. I also order the set with the HSS drills. That left me with a smallest drill size of .6 mm but I decided to go with that because I didn't want to fool around with stainless steel drills. I followed all of your instructions after very carefully enlarging the main jet to .6 mm. It started on the first pull and ran smoothly. I could have never imagined such a simple solution... but it worked! Thanks again.

At 3:39 note that the needle is mounted in a channel on the float. Very important when reassembling the unit. Some folks may just drop the needle in the cavity, causing the float to disengage.

My mower was dying after getting hot, running about half way through my lawn, sometimes much less in the heat. I thought it was the choke initially, but watched your vid, cleaned the carb out and checked the linkage clearance but was still having the same problem. I ordered the bits you recommended and drilled my carbs jet out, cleaned again, replaced the old gas and managed to mow the whole back yard.
It might have been my gas, despite running non-ethanol and using fuel additives I couldn't recall the last time I filled my can so I probably should have started there. This was a very informative video, I learned some more about my 7 year old mower which now runs great again and I saved a few bucks in the process.
    Thanks a ton!

Thank you! You may want to mention please wear safety goggles and gloves when using carburetor cleaner. Steve, a simple observation:
I use small engines A LOT when mining in Alaska. THE worst source for water and "stuff" that clogs jets is the gas can. "Stuff" just appears in them and no one notices until the jets get jammed shut. A good, micro screen filtering funnel helps A LOT on water and junk. You checked out Mr. Funnel products a while ago and I use them 100% of the time because "Time is Money", especially WAY back in the Pucker Brush.
Another "trick" from long ago is to KEEP the fuel tanks full when storing for a short time. The water that gets into the fuel (especially Gasahol in the lower 48) comes from the outside venting / air exchange of the fuel tanks. With a lot of air in the tank there is a lot of expansion / contraction of that air and the water vapor is drawn in with that exchange air. A full tank at the end of the day or before short storage means very little air exchange and almost no condensation water.
Long term storage means draining the tank, running the engine until it stops and then final draining of the tiny bit of fuel in the carb bowl. Open Ended, Really, Really long term storage means a little 2 stroke oil in the cylinder to help with rust and at a later start-up.
I just stumbled on my first Briggs plastic carb yesterday.
All I Can Say is they sure are strange. Thank You, for helping, Steve.
P.S. - No Gasahol in Alaska - it freezes in the winter. 😵‍💫
    - Joe -

Thank you so much for making this video! I have a 4 year old lawn mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine and this very same carburetor. It ran fine without any care for the first couple of years, but since then, the first run of the season, the engine runs for a few minutes and dies. The first time it happened, I checked for spark and for fuel flow. The spark plug looked pretty bad, so I decided to replace it. It still didn't work after that, so I hauled it off to my local hardware store, where they fix small engines. It worked fine for the rest of the season, probably about 8 times around the lawn. (I have a typical Chicago yard, i.e., not very large, maybe 2000 square feet of lawn to mow. Last week, first run of this season, right on cue, it ran for about 5 minutes and died. I decided that if this is going to be such a frequent occurrence, then I'd better learn how to fix it myself, just as I do all my own bicycle maintenance and most repair.
I looked up a number of videos, including this one, then got the carb cleaner and micro drill kit and did the fix you show in this video. Sure enough, my mower started right up, and I was able to start mowing the lawn. But after about 5 minutes, the engine started to surge and ebb, and after a few more minutes, it died again. IUnlike before I cleaned the carb and reamed the main jet, now it starts right up after it dies, and I got about 10 minutes of runtime before it died again. I could still restart it, but after this point, it wouldn't run very long before it died again. After a few more cycles like this, it would start right up and run for a few seconds, but then dies again. I got the impression that the problem might be heat-related, but when I checked the choke, it was wide open, as I expected it to be. What else should I be looking at?

Much respect. I'm an HVAC Tech/installer. My philosophy is the same.. why replace an entire assembly which will cost the client $500-1000 when all it is is a small part within it that costs nothing but your time to fix. People that do that are an injustice to the client and are what give the rest of us a bad name. Also, Thank you for the information about the bread tie, I had this problem.. had already tore the carb apart to clean it, but couldn't figure out how or why it still wasn't starting. This fixed it first shot. I'm sure I'll be recleaning this part over the next few weeks, I'll probably end up doing this recommendation on the wire drill set. Thank you again.

First of all, I love your videos. I just picked up a mower on the side of the road that would not run. Primed it and it backfired and quit, sheared fly wheel key. After that it ran and surged, carb I was sure. Took it apart and cleaned it and and as you did with the cartridge I drilled the jet out at about .020. Now it runs with no surge but a little rough and black smokes a little. I know its a little rich running now. Anyway got a new aftermarket carb coming. Thanks for some really good information. PS I already had some micro bits.

I had the same problem in a newish Briggs and Stratton mower. I purchased it new and used it 5-6 times. Prior to viewing your tutorial I had tried everything I knew of, including copious amounts of ‘Start Ya Bastard’ (probably called something different elsewhere). I had to drill out the jet. Works first time now. Thanks for your videos. Great info.

I have the same carb. I just want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge and making these films. I took a bread tie and spray in the main jet. Put it back together and it fired right up. My Aunt had regular pump gas containing ethanol and left it sit during the winter. That's what clogged it up is my guess. I always use 91 ethanol FREE in all my engines. I'm going to run the same in her mower now. Thank you again. By the way I also had a Coors Light doing the repair!!!!!

Hey Steve I can relate ‘‘em bare assed after third time with that woman’s mower. Just watched your two videos best way to fix Briggs carb problem and best way to clean a plastic Briggs carb. Could hardly wait till morning to pull carb off of my 5 yr old toro 7.25 b&s. Pulled new carb off for the 4th or 5th time (getting really good at it) I was sure this time was going to be the cure. My bread wire tie measured .016 and was loose in the jet, so I figured it had to be at least .20, which is what you opened yours up to. Put all back together hoping to start on 1st pull, or at least by the 3rd. No go, but here is the thing, choke is completely closed and if I even give it a whiff of starting fluid not a squirt by the closed choke, it starts with almost half a pull. Runs great no misses until I shut it off. Will even start back up. Which tells me it is still not getting fuel??? Still ‘‘em bare assed Bill

I just fixed my mower because of this video! I had cleaned the carb, then even changed out the carb, nothing worked. It was pulsating no matter what I did. The new carb had too small of a hole for the main jet. The micro drill bit worked perfectly! Thanks so much brother!

This is the exact carburetor video I was looking for. After not knowing the bowl was attached by just a snug fit o-ring, I was searching my hardware stores for a 1/2 inch hex wrench like a dummy. Now I'll be searching for a micro hand drill set like a smarty :). Also after putting everything back together (minus cleaning the bowl, see above) my mower started with just a half pull and I thought YES IT WORKED so I happily ran it over to my yard to get started mowing and to my avail, it didn't want to start again...you can imagine my frustration.

My father in law has a Craftsman mower that wouldn't start and I took it apart and cleaned that piece and it started. I have a Briggs and Stanton basically the same mower but mine will run with that rough idle so I thought cleaning it would fix that but it didn't. I did the twist tie and used the wire cleaning tool. I saw a guy use some kind of gold acid but I didn't try that. I'm going to get that micro drill set and try opening that hole. Thanks for the idea and hopefully I can smooth out that idle. This is the first time I've ever done this kind of work and it's not as bad as I thought. Just need a little courage to try. Thanks again

That’s one of the most helpful videos I have ever seen. I have been completely stumped as to why my mower won’t run because it all looks so simple and I had cleaned it out with brake cleaner. But I didn’t know about the white cartridge and that tiny jet! But now I do and I will definitely try your modification because I’m no drunk monkey either and I like to fix things myself! Thank you so much for blowing the lid off this subject; awesome video! Update. I took the white cartridge out today and cleaned it through. Some signs of black bits, but the holes were not blocked. I held off from drilling out the jet, but re-assembled it all. Some quick presses of the primer, and guess what, it started first pull!! And it ran evenly. Very, very pleased!

The fix for the plastic toro lawnmower carb. (new out of the store) was perfect. We used a very slightly larger drill bit, and it worked great. The most difficult part of the fix was getting the crappy plastic top off of the lawnmower. After we bored it out, -- First pull, instant start. Before the fix, it would start, go 10 seconds and die. Over and over. I would never recommend toro push lawnmowers for anyone. Thanks, Steve!
