All well and good just keep in mind most places charge extra if the owner has already attempted to fix it because we then have to fix your problem plus the original problem. None the less have a go at it. It ain't the space shuttle after all lol
Much respect. I own a small engine repair shop in South Carolina. What we do is starting to be a dying trade. Lot of machines are throw aways now a days. The only way I make money is by fixing stuff and not replacing parts. And the worst thing is a customer bringing something back. You take pride in what you do. That itself is a dying art. Donyboy, Taryl and yourself are awesome. I appreciate the time you put into your videos.
I’ve seen a ton of these Briggs coming through the shop. I tried drilling out the jet with an old micro drill bit set. Apparently I drilled it too big and it ran too rich. But, I agree, the jets in these things are way too small. Experience is a bunch of compounded mistakes.
Parts are getting out of site. I fix stuff on the side. You can’t charge by the hour you wont have a business long that way. Part time or hoppy or just having something to do can put a few bucks in your pocket. Am older and enjoy working on small stuff. Most dealers wont even touch a weed wacker cause they charge almost the price of a new one.
@@arthurrodesiler3109 And it will take them a week snd a half to fix it, snd you usually have to go by and check the progress. You then get the ole, "I was gonna call you..."
What makes Steve so good as a small mechanic Professional is his ability to test, Diagnose, Re test and check it again. He learns each time he makes a repair. And then what makes steve so great is he's generous with his knowledge and he teaches others. Absolutely fabulous job steve!!!👍👍👍 And have a beer for me.
72 yr young man here and have flipped a lot of snow throwers, lawnmowers, garden rototillers over the past 40 yrs. Always nice to see someone like Steve who enjoys his work and explain things in detail. I’ll drink to that Steve. 🍺
I must have cleaned the carburetor three or four times before finding this video. Drilling out the hole on the cartridge to a 20 thousandths of an inch finally fixed it. Thanks much!
@antonioalvarez2357 i am dealing with that on my now. Was sitting for a while and cleaned the carb. Now it surges every 25 seconds. It tries to dye and the surges up blowing black smoke. This unit is prime and has not auto choke or thermal choke. I will check my floater getting stuck down causing over flow or my choke flap is getting stuck. I will inform you what it was when fixed.
Thank you so much. After watching your videos, my husband and I had our old mower running like new in just a few minutes. We almost threw it away. Thanks again. We are older and on a fixed income, every little bit helps!
I just fixed my mower ALL BY MYSELF!! Just now! I'm still greasy. That thing cranking was the sweetest sound I ever heard! I can't thank you enough. I just love your channel and WILL BE sharing! Also, My brother's name is Steve. So I see your merch in his future!
Watched about a half dozen other b&s carb cleaning how to videos and was having no success until I stumbled across yours. Great walkthrough (particularly for the jet and cartridge) and nice close camera shots. Got it started on first pull. Thanks for the great video!
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Thanks, got mine started 1st pull after sitting in the garage for the last year or so. Home Depot wouldn't take their Yard Machine back. Carb cleaner was the answer.
I love your common sense approach!! Repair, not replace. I have a lawnmower with one of those carbs. It just stopped dead yesterday and won’t restart, but will try with starter fluid. I figured it was water in the carb and checked out your video to see if I could drain the carb bowl with an allen wrench. From the glance of the inside of the bowl in this video, it looks like it’s designed to be drained with a quarter turn. If not, then you gave great info in this video to go further. I did small engine repair 23 years ago. But things change. And at my age now, I forget too. Good job Sir!!
This is THE BEST video EVER for a B & S carb fix. I first saw this video three years ago after I bought a Craftsman lawn mower off of craigslist for $25--the ad said it "wouldn't start." I paid the $25 and followed Steve's carb cleaning video, and it started after the first pull. Fast forward three years, and this same mower started having RPM surging issues last week. I replaced the spark--no good, stilled surged. I again pulled up this video, followed the carb cleaning steps again, and no more surging. Thanks!
I’m a 2367 year old vampire who just awoke from a 300 year slumber. Carburetors weren’t even invented last I was awake. I’m so thankful you put this easy to understand tutorial together for us. This is going to make maintaining the grounds at my castle much easier.
I just cleaned one of these Friday and was thrilled to get it running, now I need to get it back and drill the jet out so it will continue running. Love these videos, really helpful for do it yourselfers! Thanks!
Thank you, thank you. Out of the box this mower would not start. Had guys look at it and couldn't figure it out. Stumbled onto your very easy to follow tutorial and even hunted down the drill bits locally. After doing the repair myself, this 65 year-old grandma started the mower on the first pull. Been starting ever sense!
Thanks mate. I have this mower my neighbour through out and I just drilled out the main jet and away it went. Can’t wait for him to see me mowing my lawn with his old mower priceless.
Hi Steve...... throw away a carb?? No way! I'm right there with you. And thanks to THIS video, I fixed my Briggs 500E in less than five minutes. I've no idea WHAT is actually causing these brass jets to clog up, but the .020" drill bit I cleaned it out with SOLVED the problem. (I've also STOPPED using Ethanol-laced fuel in my yard equipment and use Ethanol-Free instead... figuring its the excessive varnish in the Ethanol that plugging the jet). THANKS AGAIN for your GREAT video Steve! :)
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon AFTER I sent this, I went deeper into your other video on the Stihl Motomix and the contents of the fuel mixtures. Then I felt kinda bad I wrote about the ethanol... evidently, THAT's not the problem. But running the ethanol-free fuel seems to be a little better anyway. That $28 a gallon for the GOOD stuff is too steep for me. I go thru a lot of fuel (big yard and lotta tools).... for a savings of >$23 a gallon, I'll clean out the jets every now and then.
I know I’m 3 years late to the party but I need to tell you thank you for this video. You saved me hundreds on a new mower. I was at my last straw. I cleaned my carb 3 times, the gas tank and fuel lines twice, new plug and air filter too! Could not get it to stay running. I mowed my entire lawn by spraying starter fluid at the intake the whole time! I never knew that little white jet housing could come out. Sure enough that “secondary” outlet was clogged. Sprayed it, used my pin vise to loosen the clog, sprayed it again and reinstalled. Now my mower starts on the first try (no ether) and runs like a champ! Thanks again, Sir!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I followed your directions and my brand new- only- worked- one- time Husky mower worked PERFECTLY. I'm a 62 year old lady and I did this myself. So that means ANYBODY can do this per your direction. Thanks again.
Steve I have used your videos on 3 occassions and they were right on the money. Cleaned my B&S metal and plastic carbs and the mower and pressure washer started right up. Thanks so much for puting this info out there.
My lawn mower wouldn't start today. I replaced the spark plug, air filter, put fresh gas in it and it still wouldn't start. I was going to bite the bullet and replace it but I decided to search youtube for a fix and came across your video. This video saved me from replacing my lawn mower. I appreciate what you do. Liked and subscribed.
Man I’ve been having problems with my mower for weeks I’ve watched numerous videos cleaned the carb. Replaced plug filter and oil. As soon as I drilled out the jet it roared to life like it was brand new first pull. Thank you to the moon sir I’ve watched your videos in the past to fix my old stihl weed eater I don’t know why I didn’t come straight to your channel to begin with 🙏 I appreciate you sir
I messed around with starting fluid and gas additives for a couple hours on the B&S engine on my power washer, then hit UA-cam for the solution and this video absolutely nailed it. I pulled the carb apart and blasted some high pressure air through the cartridge. That cleared all the small jets and ports inside the cartridge, I put everything back together and it started on the first pull. Thanks for the how-to and quick fix. Much appreciated!
"I messed around with starting fluid and gas additives." That's what I did weeks ago when I noticed mine struggling. Then the next week it wouldn't start. This vid and the prior - fixed it. I'm wondering if the gas additive removed debris but then it got stuck in the tiny cartridge holes. Factory flaw, but glad for this vid to become aware.
Thank you!! I kept saying something was clogged and after watching this video, I disassembled the carb and pulled the cartridge out. I tried to spray carb cleaner and the jet was clogged. I used a torch tip file to open the jet and sprayed carb cleaner through the cartridge and it blew through the jet!! Reassembled and she started right up!! Thanks again!!
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon hey Steve I need you help I bought a new carbureoter for my mower cause I cleaned it and that didn't fix it so I bought a new one and it still won't run it is not getting fuel to the motor I don't know why ?🤔
Thanks so much Steve, My neighbor asked me last week if I knew anything about Briggs & Stratton engines. I told him I've had pretty good luck keeping the two Quantum Briggs motors going on the two mowers I have. My mowers are 20, and 25 years old, and they both came stock with the old 3.75 horse B&S engines. The older of the two was lent to another neighbor who was kind enough to bring it back, not only with a bent blade, but a bent crankshaft and of course the lower seal destroyed, rendering it unable to hold oil. :( Another neighbor of mine was a scrapper, so I asked him if he had any old Briggs motors around that might have a crank shaft for me. He said he had one, but it was a 6HP quantum that didn't run. I asked what he wanted for it, and he said since it was scrap, just my old motor if I could get this one running. The 6HP quantum had practically no compression, so I went to pull the head off, only to find that all 6 bolts were loose as a goose. I bought a new gasket, put it back together and it's been running solid for 10 years. The second, the 20 year old mower I bought new to keep at a second property. It had the same 3.75HP motor as my original, but came with a plastic carburetor, which was tank mounted, and looked like my moriginal, however, it never ran right from day one. It was subject to constant stalling, even when my grass was never an inch overdue for cutting. My scrapper neighbor had another Quantum 6HP laying on the ground beneath the bed of his truck, so I asked him what he wanted. Again, he said it didn't run, so he was fine with an exchange. That motor had a clogged jet, which is such an easy fix, since the jet is in the bowl retaining nut. That motor has been running solid for 5 years now. I told my neighbor, if it's a Quantum on his mower that I could probably fix it, so he brought it over yesterday. It wasn't a quantum. It was a brand new Craftsman that had a new style 6.75HP motor with the same plastic carburetor who went through in your video. He bought the mower new at the beginning of the season and was only able to use it to cut his lawn 3 times before it quit running. It would start right up with a shot of carb cleaner, then quit. I was hoping it was just a stuck float, however the bowl was full with clean fuel when I opened it up. The main jet was visible, and I couldn't see debris in it, so I figured it was time to search UA-cam... I couldn't see how the jet assembly was retained in the carburetor until I stumbled on to your video. Thanks. :) I popped it out, and it still looked clean, however, I couldn't see light through it while shining a bright light against the nylon on the revers side, nor could I blow air through it. I worked a sewing needle around in the hole for a bit, then I could see light shined against the nylon through the hole. I was able to blow air through, then get a shot of carb cleaner to pass through from the other brass inlet with the output port blocked. I put his mower back together, and of course it started on the first pull and sounded like a brand new mower. Hmm... maybe it runs like a brand new mower because IT IS A BRAND NEW MOWER!!! I don't get it Steve. Why are plastic carburetors such a problem? I have a reasonable understanding of metallurgy, and I could see if it were an issue of dissimilar metals, I.E. if the jet were alluminum, pressed into a steel body. But that is not the case. Why should the jets on these plastic carburetors be so easily blocked? Thanks again for the great video. Like I said, I couldn't tell for certain how the jet assembly was held in the bottom of the carburetor until you showed me. Steve P.S. Are you really the man of Stihl? :)
Steve, This is the type of carburetor I have on a two year mower. I was able to clean it following your directions with carburetor cleaner and get the lawnmower running again on the first pull. Thank you! You may want to mention please wear safety goggles and gloves when using carburetor cleaner. Also, I had to review the video to make sure that I put the plastic cartridge back in the correct direction. The screws holding the air cleaner cover were interesting to line up again. Two different sizes slightly different, and another size for the plastic "bowl" cover.
The different sizes are indeed a pain! I am a 1/4 inch drive socket set aficianado so it wasn't a problem for me, but ... why did they use two different sizes?
Thank you Steve. I had 2 Toro B110 lawnmowers (from Lowes) sitting outside for the last two years. Circa 2018, 2019. Both worked for about 2 months each and then refused to start. I used your repair method on both and now both running very well. Two pulls to start them. Indeed, it was that interior jet that was the issue. I used the twist tie and several squirts of carb cleaner. Now... I need to watch your string trimmer videos and repair the 3 I have that are inoperable. Toasting your health with an Obsidian Stout. Cheers my friend...
My mower was dying after getting hot, running about half way through my lawn, sometimes much less in the heat. I thought it was the choke initially, but watched your vid, cleaned the carb out and checked the linkage clearance but was still having the same problem. I ordered the bits you recommended and drilled my carbs jet out, cleaned again, replaced the old gas and managed to mow the whole back yard. It might have been my gas, despite running non-ethanol and using fuel additives I couldn't recall the last time I filled my can so I probably should have started there. This was a very informative video, I learned some more about my 7 year old mower which now runs great again and I saved a few bucks in the process. Thanks a ton!
Best fix it video I have seen in along time. Sitting here thinking I need to clean carburetor as lawn mower won't start. Only 3 years old. Makes perfect sense. Cheap shit, I would normally say, not made to last, but in this instance, not made to start. Thanks.
Thank you!!! I watched a dozen other videos and disassembled and cleaned this carb. about 4 times. Watched your video and drilled out the jet. It started on the first crank.
Hey stevens, this one really helped me. I've had that damn carb off 3 times, cleaning it. Put it back on, it would run for 10,15 minutes, then stop. I was loosing it! Then I watched you man.. drilled that little shit out to 20 thou, wa,la, runs like the wind. Your awesome my man! I thank you, your saving the little guy a few bucks. I appreciate your help and your time. Thank you, God bless..
The fuel line should have an in-line filter because its inevitable that debris will get in the fuel, I seem to remember putting one in last time I had to clean the stupid carb out.
Sounds like Micheal has some slightly dirty fuel, defiantly a design flaw in these new carbs. Stevens is the MAN. this make me wanna start doing small engine repair. must be tone of these new carbs out there.
Steve, thank you so much! My wife found a Craftsman mower for sale cheap, guy said it wouldn't stay running. I fired it up, it quit right away, but unit was in impeccable condition and engine sounded healthy when it ran. Tried cleaning carb, no luck. Then came across your video, followed what you said, now it runs like new! I was raised on the old metal Briggs carbs, this plastic one threw me for a loop...thanks again, Steve!
2020 CRAFTSMAN 2800-PSI 2.3-GPM Cold Water Gas Pressure Washer with Briggs & Stratton. New purchase $289, worked perfect. 2021 Summer. Won't start. Paid local repair man $40. Was told to use non-ethanol gas to prevent carb issues. Worked perfect. 2022 Summer. Won't start. Pissed off and tried to sell on Clist for $100 and no takers. 2023 Summer. Cleaned carb jet w/cleaner and 14K gold acid. Works perfect. Thank you so much for giving me the confidence to solve this issue. Can't wait for next carb clog.
Thank you Steve! I've got a Troy-Bilt with a Briggs engine and the plastic carburetor. For a while I got by by removing the carburetor and merely sloshing it around in a can of gasoline. Then the frequency and character of the problems increased. Most recently I got the oscillating engine speed. That's a nightmare. I ordered a micro drill set from Amazon because I wanted a next day solution. I also order the set with the HSS drills. That left me with a smallest drill size of .6 mm but I decided to go with that because I didn't want to fool around with stainless steel drills. I followed all of your instructions after very carefully enlarging the main jet to .6 mm. It started on the first pull and ran smoothly. I could have never imagined such a simple solution... but it worked! Thanks again.
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon I didn't see the set of drills you recommended until after I ordered another one. Oh well. Your recommendation there was better, too.
I had the same issue with my customer.I finally had a carb I put on from a blown engine. I still have that carb I can fix now. Steve, your the best. Many Thanks
Steve thanks so much for an awesome video. I’m by no means a small engine repair guy but followed all your instructions to clean the Briggs & Stratton 725 Exi carburetor on a pressure washer. It literally startled me when it started on the first pull. Unreal and fulfilling experience. Thank you sir!!!
Steve, a simple observation: I use small engines A LOT when mining in Alaska. THE worst source for water and "stuff" that clogs jets is the gas can. "Stuff" just appears in them and no one notices until the jets get jammed shut. A good, micro screen filtering funnel helps A LOT on water and junk. You checked out Mr. Funnel products a while ago and I use them 100% of the time because "Time is Money", especially WAY back in the Pucker Brush. Another "trick" from long ago is to KEEP the fuel tanks full when storing for a short time. The water that gets into the fuel (especially Gasahol in the lower 48) comes from the outside venting / air exchange of the fuel tanks. With a lot of air in the tank there is a lot of expansion / contraction of that air and the water vapor is drawn in with that exchange air. A full tank at the end of the day or before short storage means very little air exchange and almost no condensation water. Long term storage means draining the tank, running the engine until it stops and then final draining of the tiny bit of fuel in the carb bowl. Open Ended, Really, Really long term storage means a little 2 stroke oil in the cylinder to help with rust and at a later start-up. I just stumbled on my first Briggs plastic carb yesterday. All I Can Say is they sure are strange. Thank You, for helping, Steve. P.S. - No Gasahol in Alaska - it freezes in the winter. 😵💫 - Joe -
Video may be 4 years old but it helped me so much today. I had a hand me down zero turn for around 2 years and I tried and tried to fix and just ended up selling. Got a hand me down from my uncle push mower and it last 6 months and just stop in the middle of mowing. This video fixed my problem. Thank you so much for the great information and making it easy to understand.
Am so glad I stumbled upon your channel.....I used your video to fix a lawnmower that was given to me! It's not often you find a businessman with your integrity! Keep up the great work! Hope you and your family stay safe and healthy
Hey Steve, My son brought home a mower that wouldn’t start, I noticed that it had one of those Walbro plastic carburetors. The jet was clogged with what looked like corrosion so I drilled it out with a.04mm drill bit. Blew out the ports with carb cleaner. This mower runs like new. Thanks so much for your advice and tips. I watch your shoe often.
Great video once again! Yes thats right! do your own work! I started doing my own work 14yrs ago and saved myself a TON OF MONEY, TIME, FUSTRATIONS, WEAR AND TEAR on my car./ and that means I have more time to Drink Beer at the end of the day, Thank you STEVE
Thank You !! retired, disabled. so fixed income. being disabled (spine-neck) this was difficult, but still was able to do this and save money I don't have!
My lawnmower would not start. It had standing gasoline in the bottom of the airbox. Google's best guess, float valve issue. I followed your instructions in this video. Took my carburetor apart. Cleaned it. Put it back together. Lawnmower started on the second pull. Repair cost, ZERO. Thank you very much. A very, very, good video.
I just had my first experience with a plastic carb this weekend. My mother bought a craftsman power washer with a b&s engine last winter. She used it about three times then put it away with fuel still in it and couldn't get it to start when she tried to use it again months later. I pulled the carb, cleaned it with carb spray, washed it out with soapy water so it wouldn't melt (don't know if it would but why take chances), then blew out all the jets and passages with a compressor. After that it fired right up. I didn't bother with drilling out the jet but I made sure she understood the importance of not storing it with fuel still in it. Then she made power wash her house lol. I have admit, the carb was very easy to clean but I still don't like plastic. I really enjoy your channel, keep up the good work and have a cold one on me.
Thank you for posting this video, I consider myself semi expert in carburetor removal and cleaning now but more than that thanks for saving me about 125 dollars to have my lawnmover "repaired." Best video i've seen on the subject now for some cold ones! LOL
Steve, thankx... this is truly the information only available from the seasoned journeyman mechanic’s personal experience with these machines. Your willingness to share this is invaluable to the novice tinkers like me. Buy yourself a beer and send me the bill.
Hey, thanks for this video. Four years later on Monday, I happen to be working on one of these carburetors, and I never encountered one before. I was stumped on it, so I went to get a sandwich, and stumbled upon this. I got it done and mowed within an hour of watching this. So again. Thank you.
Mower hasn't run for 2 yrs. Thought we had it fixed last year. Tried to start this year, wouldn't start. Watched the video, got the micro drill bits, proceeded to fix the issue. Worked like a charm!!! Thanks, Steve!👍
I have been trying to fix my own mower for 3 weeks. Same deal....plastic carburetor had that tiny hole clogged. I didnt have any wire to clear it, but your twist tie idea was genius! Cleaned it and it fired up off the first pull! Thank you so much.....especially for the recommendation for the giant beer! Cheers!
Same problem!! Brand new mower, with clean new gas, third mowing and this jet is clogged! Cleaned it and it worked for one more time then No Start!!! I’m now drilling out this damn jet! And adding a small filter in the fuel line!! Thanks dude!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make videos like this. I was moments away from buying another mower. But cleaning and widening my jet resolved the issue. Manufacturers have tuned into the planned obsolescence idea quiet successfully. Your time and consideration is greatly appreciated. Cheers Capt. M. B. Miller
Thank you so much for making this video! I have a 4 year old lawn mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine and this very same carburetor. It ran fine without any care for the first couple of years, but since then, the first run of the season, the engine runs for a few minutes and dies. The first time it happened, I checked for spark and for fuel flow. The spark plug looked pretty bad, so I decided to replace it. It still didn't work after that, so I hauled it off to my local hardware store, where they fix small engines. It worked fine for the rest of the season, probably about 8 times around the lawn. (I have a typical Chicago yard, i.e., not very large, maybe 2000 square feet of lawn to mow. Last week, first run of this season, right on cue, it ran for about 5 minutes and died. I decided that if this is going to be such a frequent occurrence, then I'd better learn how to fix it myself, just as I do all my own bicycle maintenance and most repair. I looked up a number of videos, including this one, then got the carb cleaner and micro drill kit and did the fix you show in this video. Sure enough, my mower started right up, and I was able to start mowing the lawn. But after about 5 minutes, the engine started to surge and ebb, and after a few more minutes, it died again. IUnlike before I cleaned the carb and reamed the main jet, now it starts right up after it dies, and I got about 10 minutes of runtime before it died again. I could still restart it, but after this point, it wouldn't run very long before it died again. After a few more cycles like this, it would start right up and run for a few seconds, but then dies again. I got the impression that the problem might be heat-related, but when I checked the choke, it was wide open, as I expected it to be. What else should I be looking at?
This video is just fantastic and the best thing is Steve does a proper diagnostic with a holistic view on the problem instead of just changing parts and not knowing what caused the issue in the first place like a lot of mechanics nowadays / well done and thank you so much for your time and effort to help everyone out there
Thank you so much for your detailed tutorial. My 2 year old Lawn Mower would start but not stay running. After following your directions its running again. I found and removed the deposits on the "jet" opening of the cartridge and the "needle" under the float. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
I installed a shutoff in the fuel line and turn it off and run the engine until it runs out of gas when I'm done mowing. It actually runs for four or five minutes on what's in the bowl. Between that and using stabilized non-ethanol fuel I don't expect problems in the future, but if I do, I now know how to fix it. Thanks, Steve, very clear tutorial!
I have cleaned a lot of carbs but never the plastic ones, I had a mower given to me and it runs badly, now I know what to look for thanks to you Steve! You're a big help. Thank you my friend!
Received a Troy Bilt Mower for free today that wouldn't start. I was a plastic carb virgin but followed your instructions and now it starts on the first pull and runs perfectly. The main jet did seem to be clogged and I blew it out with carb cleaner. You da man.
Look at that... 2 years later and this video helped me fix my plastic carburetor on my power washer! Thank you for your amazingly detailed and educational video. Cheers from Canada!
At 3:39 note that the needle is mounted in a channel on the float. Very important when reassembling the unit. Some folks may just drop the needle in the cavity, causing the float to disengage.
My Toro with Briggs and Stratton was dying out last week after sitting since September. It started fine but no power to dp actual work - it just quit every two feet. I watched your videos and bought the wire bits. My main jet was larger than 0.48 mm so i left it alone. Cleaned it well, reassembled and it started on first pull and ran like a champ with lots of power. I am going to Paypal you some cash for your excellent and informative work. Thank you!
I had the same problem in a newish Briggs and Stratton mower. I purchased it new and used it 5-6 times. Prior to viewing your tutorial I had tried everything I knew of, including copious amounts of ‘Start Ya Bastard’ (probably called something different elsewhere). I had to drill out the jet. Works first time now. Thanks for your videos. Great info.
Great tutorial - my lawnmower's carburetor got clogged from sitting over the winter. This tutorial was great at showing how to get out some of the parts you need to get out to clean your ports - namely the cartridge in the middle.
@@harper626 I think that defeats the purpose of Steve showing us that the main jet was poorly designed to start with, hence why he enlarged it. Wouldnt want to buy a new one every time you mow :)
The tip about drilling the hole bigger worked perfectly. I bought a new carb and it was dead in two weeks. I drilled the hole bigger as you suggested and it started up on first tug and no longer has issues with clumps of wet grass.
Steve, thanks so much for the great video on cleaning my briggs and stratton plastic carb. I ordered a new one on Amazon that was due today and I came across your video. Went and spent $2 on a can of carb cleaner at O'Reilly's, took the carb off, cleaned it like you showed (I didn't have a wire bit to drill the fuel hole out) and BAM! It fired up the first time. The one that shows up today will be going back to Amazon. many thanks and enjoy the beer on me.
Thank you so much for these videos. Im fairly mechanically inclined but this was my first time cleaning a carburetor. The shop wanted $80 to do this for me so i said screw it ill give it a try, found your videos, and got er done! Im gonna buy one of your shirts for teaching me. I appreciate it :)
Awesome! Drilled my main jet out with a .6mm bit. Ran like a champ for the first time this season. Before it was bogging down every few minutes even after a thorough carb cleaning. After drilling it out I mowed 1/3 acre without it bogging down once! Thanks again!
Hey Steve, I have to say you are Spot On! I purchased a new mower 2 years ago. From day one mowing my lawn it would rev up and down. The third season it wouldn’t start. I found your video. Purchased the drill bits in the link. Followed your instructions and after starting my mower it’s running better than the day I got it! The only mistake I made, I forgot the Gynormous Can of Beer!😂😂 Lol! Thanks Steve
Steve I’m in full agreement with you, this is absolutely the problem!!! I have broke down the carb two different times and throughly cleaned it. Put it back together pump the primer valve 3-4 times and it would fire right up. But then stop after burning off the initial fuel from the primer!!! I watched your video, tore it down for the third time and took the bread tie and cleaned it out throughly again. Put it all back together and fired it back up and it “RUN LIKE A CHAMP”!!!! Thanks for the Lesson and the Video!!!!!!!
Great video! managed to fix lawnmower quickly and always love to learn a new skill. great attitude to repairing and not replacing parts unnecessarily, we need more of this! cheers!
Good info. First time seeing this channel and I definitely subscribed. I cleaned my Briggs lawnmower engine almost two years ago like you showed and it’s doing the sputtering again. So this time I will pay more attention to carving out the actual jet this time. Thanks Steve!!
Scored a 2023 model Masport here In Australia for a great price. It had this same problem........ It started right up, ran rough as hell, especially for a lawnmower that literally was used once. I ripped it apart sprayed it all out (took out the cartridge ect.) It now runs like an actual NEW mower !!!!! This was a Masport w/ the 575ex motor. GREAT video, mate.
Thank you Steve. I just fixed a mower for someone after watching a couple of your videos about these plastic carburetors. The one I was working on definitely had a "too small of a hole" problem. My thoughts are that it was just corrosion from the fuel she'd been using (ethanol); what I drained out was so cloudy you couldn't see the bottom of the tin can I drained it into. That water, over time closed up the hole in the jet. Also, at first, HATED the idea that Briggs had made a completely plastic carburetor. I've since changed my mind. It's simple and it works.
Thanks a lot Steve. I'm from Papua New Guinea in the Pacific andi have to say your videos and tutorials are a blessing to third-world countries such as mine. We do not have the luxury of a wide variety of tools sold in our shops but your videos have given us so much information and knowledge. God bless you man. You're the BEST! 🙏❤️
Top job Steve- I appreciate your persistence and clarity - absolutely solved a very frustrating problem for me. Had to get the glasses out to deal with those pesky little drills but it was worth it. Started first pull on re-assembly and hasn't missed a beat. Cheers and have another cold beer - You deserve it!
Thanks for another great video Steve, I honestly wouldn't have been able to diagnose and fix my equipment without you and many other youtubers sharing yalls experience. You are awesome brother cheers! 🍻
Thank you so much for your DIY technical tips. I actually like these plastic carbs as they are super easy to clean and rebuild. It has very few non-moving parts (just the float up and down shut-off motion) compared to a motorcycle carb. I would say these carbs are bulletproof, simple, and a no-brainer. No need to replace these unless they are either melted, deformed, or cracked breaching the air/gas atomization. Nonetheless, replacement costs are very cheap. But as in your post follow-up video, you teardown a carb for the technical and repair aspect. The joy of the learning experience associated with finding the root cause; and thus stretching your engineering mind in problem solving. And simply not to just replace it. Thanks again Steve. Keep-up the great work my friend !!
Hey man, thanks - my daughter put the oil/gas mixture into our lawn mower's gas tank by accident; I took apart the carburetor per your instructions and it's working beautifully now.
Holy cow, thanks Steve! Exceptional walk through and great explanation. I have been so frustrated trying to figure out how to work on/repair this carb that has been giving me issues. You helped me so much!
Same. Cleaned the carburetor. Fired up on the first pull and ran for about a minute before getting clogged again. Found this video and drilled out the jet. Runs better than ever.
SIR I take my hat out for you, you are the rare truly SCIENTIST that still exists, outstanding review, a Scholar and a Gentlemen, thanks a lot you solved my problem.

In a pinch without micro drill bits, I used my torch tip cleaning files.
So gonna try that man thanks so much
I'm a "mature woman" lol & I followed your instructions completely. Worked like magic!!! Much thanks from Georgia!
the link for the micro drill bits is no longer valid, the description of the item is correct, but its not available for purchase, nor are the pictures correct.
I'm a single mom homeowner and I find this guy hilarious! No way I'm paying to have my mower fixed before I try myself. Great video.
That is awesome!
Oh Liz, I totally agree with you. I love this guys videos! And believe me, He knows what he's talking about.
Ahh, a kindred spirit. 👍
I do hope you enjoy a fine amber beverage also!
Thank You... Were you ever in the 9th Infantry?
No sir.
WOW! Thank You...

Glad it helped
I have a machine that does up-rev motions, why does it do this? It's the carbulator?
Me too! I bought a new one. Used it a few times and now it’s giving issues.
Did drilling it out fix it permanently?
You're Welcome...
That's AWESOME! Great job Andria....
Watched about a half dozen other b&s carb cleaning how to videos and was having no success until I stumbled across yours. Great walkthrough (particularly for the jet and cartridge) and nice close camera shots. Got it started on first pull. Thanks for the great video!
You're Welcome...
John Sladewski same exact thing here...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Thanks, got mine started 1st pull after sitting in the garage for the last year or so. Home Depot wouldn't take their Yard Machine back. Carb cleaner was the answer.
Well try the rest and then listen to the Best. Steve small engine saloon
Thank You...
Thanks!
Right on buddy! You're Welcome...
I have a machine that does up-rev motions, why does it do this?
@@antonioalvarez2357 No guess. If it has a B&S carb like these, try the cleaning.
Thanks!
You're Welcome...
That is AWESOME Audrey! So happy to hear....
Thanks mate. I have this mower my neighbour through out and I just drilled out the main jet and away it went. Can’t wait for him to see me mowing my lawn with his old mower priceless.
Thanks! You saved me a lot of time on a repair with your expert explanation.
WOW! You're Welcome...and Thank You...
Nice work!
Right on Brady! You're Welcome...
Thank you so much for this video. I followed your directions and my brand new- only- worked- one- time Husky mower worked PERFECTLY. I'm a 62 year old lady and I did this myself. So that means ANYBODY can do this per your direction. Thanks again.
You're welcome!
I am very grateful to you. I have sent my plastic carbonated lawnmower twice to the shop. Came back with the same problem. Thanks again.
You're Welcome...
Steve I have used your videos on 3 occassions and they were right on the money. Cleaned my B&S metal and plastic carbs and the mower and pressure washer started right up. Thanks so much for puting this info out there.
Glad to help
My lawn mower wouldn't start today. I replaced the spark plug, air filter, put fresh gas in it and it still wouldn't start. I was going to bite the bullet and replace it but I decided to search youtube for a fix and came across your video. This video saved me from replacing my lawn mower. I appreciate what you do. Liked and subscribed.
Awesome!
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Steven videos are so helpful thanks bro, 👍✅💯
I messed around with starting fluid and gas additives for a couple hours on the B&S engine on my power washer, then hit UA-cam for the solution and this video absolutely nailed it. I pulled the carb apart and blasted some high pressure air through the cartridge. That cleared all the small jets and ports inside the cartridge, I put everything back together and it started on the first pull. Thanks for the how-to and quick fix. Much appreciated!
You're Welcome...
Great job!
That man is a 'ginormous' talent. Respect due!
Thank You...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon hey Steve I need you help I bought a new carbureoter for my mower cause I cleaned it and that didn't fix it so I bought a new one and it still won't run it is not getting fuel to the motor I don't know why ?🤔
Thanks so much Steve,
My neighbor asked me last week if I knew anything about Briggs & Stratton engines. :(
Another neighbor of mine was a scrapper, so I asked him if he had any old Briggs motors around that might have a crank shaft for me.
Thanks. :)
I popped it out, and it still looked clean, however, I couldn't see light through it while shining a bright light against the nylon on the revers side, nor could I blow air through it.
Steve
Right on Dan! Thank You...
Did you fix all 3?!
Thanks.

I'd cleaned a few carbs, but, this last one was my first "plastic " one. Did not know how to start till I watched this. THANK YOU
Right on John!
Thank you!!! I watched a dozen other videos and disassembled and cleaned this carb. about 4 times. Watched your video and drilled out the jet. It started on the first crank.
Great job!

You're Welcome...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon I didn't see the set of drills you recommended until after I ordered another one. Oh well. Your recommendation there was better, too.

Great to hear!
Steve, a simple observation:
I use small engines A LOT when mining in Alaska.

Hey Steve,
My son brought home a mower that wouldn’t start, I noticed that it had one of those Walbro plastic carburetors. The jet was clogged with what looked like corrosion so I drilled it out with a.04mm drill bit. Blew out the ports with carb cleaner. This mower runs like new.

Right on Buddy! Thank You...
Thank you for posting this video, I consider myself semi expert in carburetor removal and cleaning now but more than that thanks for saving me about 125 dollars to have my lawnmover "repaired." Best video i've seen on the subject now for some cold ones! LOL

This video is just fantastic and the best thing is Steve does a proper diagnostic with a holistic view on the problem instead of just changing parts and not knowing what caused the issue in the first place like a lot of mechanics nowadays / well done and thank you so much for your time and effort to help everyone out there
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Thank you so much for your detailed tutorial. My 2 year old Lawn Mower would start but not stay running. After following your directions its running again. I found and removed the deposits on the "jet" opening of the cartridge and the "needle" under the float. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
You're Welcome...
You're Welcome...
Received a Troy Bilt Mower for free today that wouldn't start. I was a plastic carb virgin but followed your instructions and now it starts on the first pull and runs perfectly. The main jet did seem to be clogged and I blew it out with carb cleaner. You da man.
Thank You...
Look at that... 2 years later and this video helped me fix my plastic carburetor on my power washer! Thank you for your amazingly detailed and educational video. Cheers from Canada!
Great to hear!
Thanks Steve... and cheers!! Pulled the carburetor and cleaned it following your instructions. Started on the first pull. Great videos!
Great to hear!
Dude you have helped me so many ways from chainsaws to weed wackers and every time what you say works... lm a fan cause you da Man !!!
Thank You...
So give him a subscription! It's free! 👍
Thank you!
Wow! I just saw the Paypal. Thank you very much Scotty...
Great info.
You're Welcome...
Hey! Just subscribed after watching 100+ vids of this carburetors issues and yours is the best! Thanks.
Awesome, thank you!
Great tutorial - my lawnmower's carburetor got clogged from sitting over the winter. This tutorial was great at showing how to get out some of the parts you need to get out to clean your ports - namely the cartridge in the middle.
Great to hear!
Steve, THANK YOU!! I’ve taken this carb apart 3 times! This is what I needed!! You are the man!! Great channel!!
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
Best way to fix carb problem is to replace with new carb from ebay (10 bucks or 17 at walmart).
Right on
Steve, thanks so much for the great video on cleaning my briggs and stratton plastic carb.
Great to hear!
Excellent video, I fix my Lawn mower in minutes. After your tutorial all look easy.
Thanks
Glad to help
Thank you so much for these videos. Im fairly mechanically inclined but this was my first time cleaning a carburetor. The shop wanted $80 to do this for me so i said screw it ill give it a try, found your videos, and got er done! Im gonna buy one of your shirts for teaching me. I appreciate it :)
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
Awesome! Drilled my main jet out with a
.6mm bit. Ran like a champ for the first time this season. Before it was bogging down every few minutes even after a thorough carb cleaning. After drilling it out I mowed 1/3 acre without it bogging down once! Thanks again!
That is awesome!
Well said!
Right on Harry! You're Welcome...
Great video! managed to fix lawnmower quickly and always love to learn a new skill.
great attitude to repairing and not replacing parts unnecessarily, we need more of this! cheers!
Thanks 👍
Thank you Steve, used your idea and the mower works now. Thank you so much. I almost got a new mower but not now.
Fantastic!
Good info. First time seeing this channel and I definitely subscribed. I cleaned my Briggs lawnmower engine almost two years ago like you showed and it’s doing the sputtering again. So this time I will pay more attention to carving out the actual jet this time. Thanks Steve!!
Good luck!
*Briggs & Stratton engine
Thank you Steve. I just fixed a mower for someone after watching a couple of your videos about these plastic carburetors. The one I was working on definitely had a "too small of a hole" problem. My thoughts are that it was just corrosion from the fuel she'd been using (ethanol); what I drained out was so cloudy you couldn't see the bottom of the tin can I drained it into. That water, over time closed up the hole in the jet. Also, at first, HATED the idea that Briggs had made a completely plastic carburetor. I've since changed my mind. It's simple and it works.
Thank You!! I have one of these carbs and it’s been driving me nuts. Never would have figured this out for myself so really appreciate the video.
You are so welcome!
Thank you, Steve. That's the exact carburetor, and problem I ran into today! Many thanks for showing us how to do that!
Glad to help
Uu
Absolutely great tutorial,.
Thank You...
Happy to help!
My 10 year old lawnmower that I bought off Craigslist 5 years ago now runs better then when I bought it. Thank you!
Right on
Top job Steve- I appreciate your persistence and clarity - absolutely solved a very frustrating problem for me. Had to get the glasses out to deal with those pesky little drills but it was worth it. Started first pull on re-assembly and hasn't missed a beat. Cheers and have another cold beer - You deserve it!
Excellent!
Thanks for another great video Steve, I honestly wouldn't have been able to diagnose and fix my equipment without you and many other youtubers sharing yalls experience. You are awesome brother cheers! 🍻
You're Welcome...
Just had this exact problem. Smallest jet ever 😝
Thanks Steve, you’re one of the best!
You're Welcome...
Keep-up the great work
my friend !!
Hey man, thanks - my daughter put the oil/gas mixture into our lawn mower's gas tank by accident; I took apart the carburetor per your instructions and it's working beautifully now.
Right on
Holy cow, thanks Steve! Exceptional walk through and great explanation. I have been so frustrated trying to figure out how to work on/repair this carb that has been giving me issues. You helped me so much!
Great to hear!
Thanks Steve! Drilling out the main jet fixed my mower. I found a mini-drill set at Menards that had a 0.5 mm drill (0.0197") for $4.
Same. Cleaned the carburetor. Fired up on the first pull and ran for about a minute before getting clogged again. Found this video and drilled out the jet. Runs better than ever.
I find it to work better if you use a # 72 drill bit .025 ,,,it works great .
SIR I take my hat out for you, you are the rare truly SCIENTIST that still exists, outstanding review, a Scholar and a Gentlemen, thanks a lot you solved my problem.
Right on
This guy saved me 150 dollars to fix my carbuerator. Very detailed explanation.
Right on! Glad to hear it...
