Hello, thanks for the video, I appreciate the fair approach.
    The budget:
    - Any production budget requires way more revenue to recoup, as we have to remove platform fees (30%) + publisher recoup + publisher cut + taxes + rev share with the team.
    It's completely normal.
    - In terms of development time, budget, or sales expectations, we're completely in the benchmark for indie games of this caliber, like Cuphead, Stray, Inside, etc.
    The controversy:
It was insanely overblown & completely irrelevant to my values, my ideals, my life, my goals & what we've been making.
I'm not tribal, never been, never claimed to be part of any particular group or movement, and certainly not the right-wing.
I reject the way this has all been framed, it's insane how unhinged are some people's assumptions compared to the simple reality.
I've been openly writing everyday on Twitter with most of the industry following me since 2017, so I think my views & concerns are pretty clear now.
What I'm doing is eminently political, and completely irrelevant to America's culture war.
We're tackling a much larger civilizational context, and there is a layer of abstraction to create healthy distance with current events.
    The Last Night is:
    1. A rich cross-section of a possible future society.
Written by carefully extrapolating current trends + potential breakthroughs, the result of years of obsessive research & discussions with forward-thinking minds.
Just like our current world, it's neither an utopia or dystopia, it's a heterotopia. Despite incredible progress, social frustration is on rise: the Tocqueville effect.
My goal is to explore the human condition when humanity is on the verge to eliminating all labor, creative or not, and left with potentially nothing meaningful to do.
Imagine humans living in a state of passiveness, relegated to the role of pets while AI is in charge.
A state of perpetual holidays, work replaced by gamification.
    2. A character study.
We don't play "a hero who will fix the situation".
we play a young alienated loner struggling to blend in & accept change.
The trailer shows this very clearly. It feels off, on purpose.
    3. The game is designed to make you really think about the future of politics, money, friendship, love, sex, reproduction, family, food, internet, etc...
It should feel like an alien culture, a world truly difficult to accept for us, today, no matter how open-minded we are.
Just like someone from 200 years ago would probably find our current world extremely difficult to swallow.
I suggest reading my pinned thread which I think gives a thorough picture of what I'm actually trying to achieve with this game.
When I see the current reactions to AI art, I feel that The Last Night really puts the finger on an incredibly relevant malaise.
AI is probably the most important topic of the century, and we didn't even start to prepare philosophically, technically, socially, or politically.
Which is why I'm making this game.

      Hi Tim!
Thanks for the comment, it's always interesting when a creator stumbles onto these videos. Pinning this since it gives a lot of good extra insight on everything I talked about.
In case it wasn't clear in the video (since I wanted to do my best to present both sides), I'm personally incredibly interested in what you're working towards here. I think your focus on AI and creating a world that's much more complicated than simply "dystopian" is exciting. Like I mentioned at the end, TRULY political video games that discuss our potential futures or increasingly popular ideologies are crucial for the medium's progression, and scouring through what you've written and posted about the game, I think The Last Night is capable of tackling inherently political issues without taking a political stance necessarily.
Regarding the controversy, I fully understand how exhausting it has to be to constantly see it pop up, and how frustrating it is for it to be linked to the game at all times. In fact, when writing the video I contemplated whether I should even mention it, or simply focus on where the game is right now. The problem is, many people assume this controversy to be the reason the game went into "hiding", or the reason you and Raw Fury split ways. Some people use it as a "good riddance" on forums when people ask why the game hasn't had many public appearances recently. Because of this, I felt it necessary to tackle both sides of the argument and discuss whether it had truly effected the state of the game, the themes of the game, or the trajectory of the game in any way.
I mentioned my personal take was that the tweets painted a bad picture that didn't represent your views, and were simply worded in a way that caused more outrage than it should have. Because of that, I do sympathize and hope you and the team will be able to focus on the success of the game once it releases instead of the inevitable negative press you will receive because of what is now a very tired history for you. It's an unfortunate spot to be in, but I hope it doesn't dampen the feeling of accomplishment when you finally release what you've been working on all these years.
As for the targeted sales and budget- I appreciate the insight into the costs of indie games! I was definitely surprised by the initial figure, but it's interesting to know it's not far from the norm for certain indies. I do agree that the benchmark for sales is perfectly reasonable though, considering those games you mentioned alongside your hundreds of thousands of wishlists. I'm very curious to see just how high the initial sales wind up being.
Thanks again for taking the time to address some key points in the video. Hope you and the team are making good progress, can't wait to play the game once it comes out!

Artists can and DO typically have their own opinions and political/socioeconomic views. This is the source of art. We have to learn how to step back and resist the urges to attack someone because their views may not particularly and readily align with our own. Learn to consume ideas, and engage with the ideas. Not the person.
We would call ourselves independent, albeit left-leaning. That said, that should never suggest that we wouldn't engage with artwork that may have underlying ideas we disagree with. People need to get away from this "canceling" of people who are different from us. In a way, this whole "gamer-gate" fiasco sounds like it kinda demonstrated what this 'Tim' was trying to speak on. Diminishing diversity and variety by actively canceling, and forcing conformity to popular opinion through bullying. It's scary either way, coming from the right or left. We should NEVER advocate censorship.

It’s been almost ten years. The game that this one inspired is already 4 years in the making and two 2 years delayed. No matter how good a game looks, no game can survive 10 years without having to be redone. I hope the dev can still pull it off.

Gamergate was always about journalism. There was no confusion. Certain women just wanted to make it about themselves and throw themselves in the crosshairs. No one should be responsible for the actions of anonymous online trolls. The "victims" sure did make a lot of money grifting from their unproven pain and suffering that they brought upon themselves though.

Actually, Gamer gate was an Anti-Gaming Media campaign. Gaming media was and still is crap, Gamergate narrative was then taken over by the very corrupt gaming media and made it about women, which somehow stuck, even though Gamer gate was never regarding it originally.
Honestly, all gamergate proved was that Gaming Media was too political, too left wing, and a complete joke. Still is too, but at least now, people know Gaming media sucks, that's why games like Hogwarts Legacy still sold millions even though that very media vilified it.

There is no actual game yet.
I pointed this out in another thread where some commenters were whining about the game not being done. The reason we got a trailer that wowed everybody (and contained no gameplay footage) is due to the involvement of Raw Fury at the time. Raw Fury is no longer the prospective publisher.
Odd Tales as it exists is a completely amateur small team of first-time game developers. They haven't taken anyone's money and don't have any deadlines.
The entire substance of hype for The Last Night is 90 seconds of animation from 2017 which is disappointing.

As someone who was absolutely floored by the original trailer, but didn't know anything about this controversy, this was a really interesting and illuminating video. I think you did a good job looking at the issues in as fair and unbiased way as possible, and I agree with your conclusions on the matter. That might be caused by me forming my opinion based on your video, but what am I supposed to do? Research?! 🤷‍♂
Just to reiterate specifically though, it's definitely true that gamergate was a weird confusing mess in the early days, and some groups and people reported exclusively on specific aspects of it while ignoring others. Depending on who a person got their info from, they could have been ignorant of the shitty aspects of the movement for a surprising amount of time. At the same time, there's absolutely no denying those tweets were poorly worded. Could have just been ignorance, or carelessness, or the format not really allowing for the expression of nuanced opinions, and it even could have been that they portray his actual opinions (which would be pretty shitty imo). Regardless, if he's publicly distancing himself from them now, and has been for years, I'm personally okay with leaving them in the past. In a world where people express so many of their thoughts and opinions in a permanent form, we need to be able to let people distance themselves from past comments, because people grow and change. Hopefully that's what happened here.
On a completely different note, I think it's wild that people would freak out about a game possibly having a anti-UBI message. There are a ton of issues with modern western society, and UBI tries to address some of those issues, but will likely come with issues of its own. No system designed by humans is likely to be perfect, and even if the idea for the system is perfect, it's unlikely to be implemented perfectly. One of the most valuable purposes of art is that it can show us possibilities, potential, hazards, and flaws in society. Any art, including videogames, should be allowed to address serious social issues, even if their conclusions aren't ones you or I agree with (within reasonable limits, of course). I feel like as a society we really need to learn how to look at and listen to ideas that we disagree with, and critiques of ideas that we hold, because often some of the most valuable insights you can gain are from people with views that oppose your own.
Loved the video, man. Keep up the awesome work!

      Research??? RIDICULOUS
Lmao glad I could shine a little light on it. Totally went over my head too when it was happening.
I definitely agree, we can't want to push "games as art" and keep freaking out if those games feature criticisms of social or economic issues, sport different viewpoints or even (like you said, within reason) take a position that isn't widely held. Like somebody else mentioned, it's a bit hypocritical to do that from the same people that clown the "keep politics out of video games" crowd. Making fun of the fact that somebody else freaked out because a game didn't have THEIR politics only works if you in turn don't freak out when a game doesn't have YOUR politics. Swings both ways. I'm interested to see what stances the game takes when it comes out, and I hope they're bold and uninhibited whatever they are, after which I can come to my own conclusions about whether I align with them or not

    • @GreyMatterShades
      @GreyMatterShades 2 роки тому +4

@@AsadAnjum Well said, man. Well said.
These days it really seems like a lot of people hold others to certain standards or expectations, but then don't apply the same ones to themselves. Each side reflexively freaking out about the other side's politics making their way into games is a good example of that.
More than that, I think that criticizing an idea held by one side doesn't automatically make you on the other side. Even if the game takes a critical stance on UBI (a typically left-wing idea) that wouldn't necessarily mean the creators were right-wing, or even anti-UBI. For all we know, the dystopian post-UBI world featured in this game came about because wealthy capitalists figured out a way to corrupt that system to stay in a position of relative power and privilege while others suffered. There should always be room for nuanced and well thought out criticism, even from within your "side."
And while we're at it, can we all acknowledge how ridiculous it is that we think of these issues as binary choices? Like, does anyone really think there's the left-wing way and the right-wing way and that's it? Everything's way more complex than that. I think a lot of that comes from the American political system and its enforced duopoly. Up here in Canada we've got 5 different political parties in parliament (which comes with its own problems), and we still seem to fall into this sort of binary thinking... but I think I'm straying a bit too far from the topic :D

Good video (I’m so psyched for this game), but your summation of gamergate is the result of naivety and misunderstanding, just as you suggest Soret’s tweets were. To suggest gamergate was a harassment campaign aimed at women and people of colour is so far from the truth. I was there when it began (though I took no part as I’m not a huge gamer - I just love cinematic platformers), and it wasn’t what you think. As with any movement like gamergate, there was a small subgroup who began harassing Zoe Quinn and Sarkeesian, but they were far from the majority. I watched as gamergate was politicised and weaponised by leftist social activist (and by right-wingers, too, on the other side of the debate), but the truth is many prominent figures involved were leftists and activists themselves (many of whom were female), and if any villain could be pulled from the messy debacle, it’s Zoe Quinn and Sarkeesian, as all they said and did created the shitstorm in the first place. This is what led to the harassment, but it was never what the movement was about, and it certainly wasn’t the majority. Here’s a link to an article that talks about it a little more in depth:

I gotta say, the amount of nuance for such a short video is impressive!
To me Tim Soret (you got the pronunciation right btw) is the kind of really smart tech person that isn't necessarily as smart for real world political issues. And he can be kind of an asshole from what I've seen, but that's hard to put this 100% on him when he was pretty much harassed too so 🤷
And the way the game got received was really weird too. Making fun of the alt right gamers who say they don't want politics in games when they mean "I don't want your politics in games" is all good, but then when a game based its dystopia in a "progressive" future, the same people got mad? I'm having a really hard time seeing the issue with it, it's just a story, not a prophecy. And even if it's propaganda, it's still someone putting everything they have into making it, so I bet it'll be interesting, even if it's wrong. But really if you can't explore potential futures in science fiction then what's the point

    • @AsadAnjum

I really like this take. I think the game will be much better if it has nuance and isn't just propaganda (just cause that's ALWAYS more interesting no matter where the creator lands on the political spectrum) but even if the game houses some more right wing opinions that doesn't mean we should boycott it. You can make fun of the opinions or think it's ridiculous (if it does turn out to push a right wing agenda) without also demanding for it to be canceled. If it doesn't represent what you want and you don't want anything to do with it, don't buy it. If you think it has interesting ideas, even if you personally disagree with them, then buy it. A lot of people asking for the game to get completely canned are pretty hypocritical imo, in the exact way you pointed out. The Last Night, instead, is all about the theatricality of PR and nothing about the product, not even a tiny recent update was published and hopefully we didn't get bamboozled.

If this was so bad because of what the game developers perceived stance. Then take a look at FF7. The decision to change the storyline and then feed us a different story. Is mentally frustrating. It’s hard to follow the story. Percentage wise. More people played the original FF7 because of the storyline.

Also there aren’t many 2d cyberpunk/blade runner type of games that I’ve found and this looks like a good one. Only other one’s that really caught my attention were Flashback (which is supposed to be getting a new sequel), The Last Night, this really awesome game called Huntdown as well that I really love and maybe the Terminator game back in the day for Sega Genesis/Sega CD. I know there are more but seems very rare that they are made especially nowadays.

The Last Night was a fantastic idea. Why should every game agree with the corrupt system? Not too long ago these were the game ideas that people loved that had awesome stores and action. It just happened that this time the Evlil corrupt system was the same one ruling at the time. Gamer Gate is and was supported every gamer out there because Gamer Gate is simply a pile of lies told by 1 side who happen to also be the people who get to frame the situation and shape it to be what they deem best fit their cause. The main journos involved are still disgusting people, leading even to a self deletion of a fellow dev based on false sa accusations they later recanted after he was gone...and zero accountability was taken.

5:21 Even from what youve shown in this video I can very clearly see what his values are, so no its really you whose misinformed. Im not surprised about it though. Gamergate was in fact about jounalistic integrity, the journalists that were under attack then started a smear campaign against gamers. That got people angry, which they wanted, because that got some of those idiots sending threats, which they then used as cannonfodder to further their smear campaign. As much as some gamers nowdays love to claim we won that war, unfortuantely we didnt. You here being prove of that. So let us take solace in the fact that they didnt win either. A lot of them did eventually end up losing their jobs because they are in fact sht journalists and no one actually read their garbage. And no self respecting gamer takes games journalist opinions seriously anymore.
