  • Apple AirTags are a brilliant way to track items such as bicycles due to the extensive reach the Apple 'Find My network has. They're technically not sold as 'theft trackers' but they work really REALLY well for this function. In this video I install FOUR AirTags on my bike and test the the detection range of each. I also answer a few commonly asked questions (and clear up misconceptions) about how AirTags work if someone was to steal your AirTagged bike/item.

First day I got my airtag, I put it in my saddle back and started a long 115km ride. Discovered the saddle bag fell off 50km into the ride, but the saddle bag was found by a kind soul who returned it later. The airtag paid for itself on the first day!

First hand experience here, someone stole my bike recently while I was inside a gas station store. Thankfully, I had an airtag inside the bottle cage mount as described in this video. It really is a clever and sneaky spot to hide the airtag because the thief’s main focus is getting away far as possible. I can’t recommend putting it in a saddle bag or any visible attachments because the thief threw away the contents for a possible tracker. I can confirm the thief won’t be alerted and was caught in an hour of pursuit. What I can say is that you need to alert the police right away about the situation (mostly because the thief may be carrying a weapon) and it helps that you register the bike’s serial number with the 529 Garage app and take a photo of it. This helps the police in identifying and matching your bike while the thief is on the getaway.

My plan is to get an LTE tracker to put in the frame somewhere and a airtag in the seat, or possibly the bottle holder- the seat is often checked the most but at the same time people at my college like to steal seats for shits and giggles a lot- something I can’t really secure so I could even track my seat lol. If my bike was really REALLY expensive (it’s expensive but not too badly since it’s not even sold anymore and fairly used- I also have outgrown it by a couple inches but since I’m not taking biking seriously anymore its fine), I’d put two airtags (bottle and seat) and an lte tracker in the frame. Not quite sure how the LtE signal is going to be inside the frame but most of those on the marker are also designed in to be inside cars which is fairly similar.

I put mine under the front mud flap. Used black duck tape so no one can see it. Stays nice and dry. The flap is made of plastic and gives out a really strong signal. You have to get on your hands and knees and really look hard to see it. Now there is a little mud on it too so it’s even harder to detect.

It seems like a tradeoff between signal strength and ease of removal, especially if thieves start looking for them in the obvious places (e.g. a water bottle cage or seat post could be removed in seconds). How about disguising the AirTag within a faux Stages power meter?!

Good to have one of these tags in your bike bag. As you are sitting in the plane, (while on the tarmac) I wounder if you could see if it would pick it up as the baggage handlers are moving it into the cargo hold. Also, at your destination, you could probably pick up the signal near the carousel or the large item pickup belt. Similarly, at a hotel baggage room, you could know your bag is in the room without having to go in it. I think the key is to put it in an inconspicuous location where the tag would still work but not get removed or lost.

I expected the saddle mounted tag to perform better. It was likely affected by the metal pole it was resting against. One tip is to pay attention to the materials your bike is constructed with and avoid putting the tags inside metal. Metal is death to RF. The bottom cage mount may not have the same performance with a bottle full of water on top of it either.

Lezyne have introduced a bottle cage with an IP67 rated compartment for an airtag. It comes with tamper proof screws and a hex bit to help with installation. It's a bit on the expensive side when compared with regular cages but I decided it was worth it. In the UK I found it online for 30 quid (33USD, 54AUD).

My Checkpoint has a perfect spot for this. One of the downtube bottle cage sections has a removal section to get into the frame for wire routing. I'm going to duct tape it in there (wrap it in some old rubber tubing to prevent the rattle). And I might also then replace the screws with something tamper resistant.

Thanks for the test, i was convinced the carbon also acts as a faraday cage but someone put it inside the bottom bracket and claimed it works, probably he didn't test the range. For mine I was thinking to make a channel cut on one end of the handlebar drop then mask it somehow. There's also some space between the shifters and the handlebar, might fit if you remove the electronics from the airtag.

my bike bag. One up in the internal tool kit in the frame’s downtube that’s integral to the better grade carbon Domanes. Both with the sound chip untouched. The third is in the bottom bracket. It’s sound chip is removed so no chirping. Hopefully one will get my bike back if stolen.

I love Apple products, so I am glad that you produced a video using the Apple AirTag. It would be interesting for you to compare the Apple AirTag with similar products for comparison. For example, I have been thinking about purchasing a "Tile" which depending on which tile you purchase can go from 46m to 122m. I just purchased a bike, so this video has got me thinking about ways to keep it secure. Thanks!

great demonstration!! come on shane lets do a bait bike experiment. park an expensive looking bike in Melbourne and set up some monitoring and let's see how good these tags work in a real scenario. my son left his 10 year old alu/carbon bike in melbourne/brunswick overnight recently ... gone doh, but the real concern is I suspect there are organized thefts using a hand grinder; taking anything they can find left out very frustrating as its usually the people that need bikes to get around that are the ones targeted.

It doesn’t rely on the thief having an iPhone, it relies on the thief passing within range of any iPhone (I also wonder if the tags and other devices contribute to this too), just like the other tracking tags. I unfortunately took down the design from thingiverse (it had more downloads then all other mounts combined) after some lazy bastards decided to steal my design and sell it for profit…not cool.
I have since revised my design and created a new version that is 10% smaller and 33% lighter then the one featured in your video (which someone simply downloaded my file and reuploaded it)
I would LOVE to send you a few of my production ones for you to review. You would be the first to receive it.
Please let me know, I spent a lot of time testing (much like your video) weeks ago to find the simplest and most effective method for putting these on a bike. I still fully believe my design is STILL the best to hit the market. Which is why people have continued to use it and try to sell it on eBay, aliexpress, and Etsy.
I do have an official Etsy account I’m selling this on, with people loving the 1.0 design. It’s being updated later today to now sell the 2.0 design.
Let me know if you want a set, again I would love for you to review them!
