    Couple of things to clarify:
The person I was chasing had all of his devices in Flight Mode, which blocks all wireless connections, including Bluetooth to the tags and 5G to the Apple / Samsung servers
I pressed the refresh button in the Samsung app, but all it actually does is ask Samsung's servers for an update, it can't contact the tag directly unless you're within Bluetooth range yourself
We went to the centre of the 6th most populated UK city and sat in a restaurant with other people around. If it needs a more populated area than this then it's not much use
This video wasn't intended to be an in depth review, but a little test for fun, but that doesn't mean I'm going to run an unfair test

indeed. I remember a video from about a year or two ago of someone running the gamut with no phone but a Samsung, iPhone, and tile tags walking around London. Samsung did pretty frequent updates, then tile, and airtag. In the few places where the airtag pinged, it always showed up about two minutes after the nearest Samsung, ping location.
In the end I find the best choice is really region dependant. Feels like US and maybe some parts of UK Airtags are gonna do better. Europe and Canada its a Toss up. Asia it seems to win with Samsung (in Japan certainly I can be in the next prefecture without a new ping)

I don't think you understand how the Samsung Tag works. It doesn't need other Samsung phones to have the Smart Things app installed. It will ping any Samsung phone or tablet within range, that was produced withing the last around 5-6 years, and will use that to share a location. The reason you only got pinged once, is that it was a rainy day (few ppl outside), and he walked on very unpopulated places, and then stayed outside a very unpopulated cafe. It's not ideal, but these things depend on the population around. If you choose a sunnier day so that more people are outside and you chose a more populated location, you will get much better result. So this test that you performed was very badly planned and executed. It poorly informs the people about how the tag actually works and it really doesn't explain anything about the differences and advantages of each tag. It doesn't explain about UWB, it doesn't explain about the battery life, it doesn't even mention the new NFC info that the Samsung Tag2 has. You didn't make the effort to research the technology well, and since you didn't know it well, you couldn't present it well. Overall pretty disappointing.

The thing is its not his fault the tag didn't work well. I would blame samsumg objectively even as a samsung s23 ultra owner. You can't have the expectation that weather will be great and people will be around when an item with your tag is stolen. Even if theres not many people around that's not his fault. 23 minutes is not okay and he pressed the refresh button. This is the reality of what can happen even in a dense city center. I think samsung has some work to do. I was suprised there wasn't a ping to a device at least inside a neaby building.

I had a good trial run when I tested the tags out in Paris. I made the mistake of using my Google Pixel 7 as the data source (hotspot) and my Samsung S23 using that hotspot. the accuracy was very poor when doing it this way and the tags were very delayed when I did it this way. (note that my tags where paired to my Samsung S23) At the last day of our stay in Paris, I switched the data source so Data coming directly from the Samsung S23 now and not the Pixel and the accuracy of each tag I had jumped to almost more accurate location of where it was. Now that I am back in Canada with them, I can track the tag more real time also helps if you constantly press the refresh button to see where and if they moved.

I lost the keys 2 times and I found them thanks to the tag. And also use the tag to locate where I parked my cars, cause sometimes I go for a long time without using them, and I always know where they are, and even if someone has used any of them because of the 7 day location history....

In contrast to Apple AirTag's reliance on nearby Apple devices, Samsung's tracking technology utilizes the Android ecosystem, creating a mesh network with any nearby Android devices for location updates. While Android boasts a vast network globally, regions with fewer Android devices may experience limited location updates. Consequently, in areas with a higher concentration of Samsung devices, such as parts of Asia, Africa, and Australia, Samsung's tracking device may offer enhanced precision and functionality due to increased compatibility with local Android devices.

A lot of people have samsung phones, the issue is you have millions of Samsung phones but probably less then 0.5% opt-in into the Samsung offline network (every phone I have touched the offline finding hasn't been enabled) and it is most likely technically enabled phone users who have only enabled it
unlike apple, samsung doesn't enable offline finding by default when setting the phone up (samsung needs to change it so it's opt-out not opt-in as that popup shows up 1-2 days after phone setup and your only offered it once, after that you have to go through 5-6 sub menus to get to the toggle switch to turn offline finding on)

I recently bought smarttag, i gave it to my boyfriend and told him to go somewhere. The tag showed where he is 40 minutes after he left me. It's useless most of the time and there are some reasons. First of all, those who are buying Samsung they like the fact that they can control their phone. So most of the samsung's phone users have their phone's nearby device scanning option off. Or they usually turn off their bluetooth and this feature on samsung got out recently. But usually apple phone users don't have much control on their phone so all phones mostly do the same thing in finding nearby devices. So, I do ask samsung users to turn on the feature of "nearby device scanning" on in their phone. 😊

I am debating getting one to put on my scooter because of the high level theft of them living in the city i am in, this is the only video i seen where the apple air tag out performed the samsung tag also seeing it perform this poorly is a red flag for me something seems a little bit off... judging by his language he uses "just to be fair to the samsung tag" seems to have implied bias of the product...

I'm an iphone guy, but I wouldn't say either one is necessarily "better" than the other. They do the same damn thing, and it's mostly blind luck. Either one could ping faster on any given day depending on who walks past. Just saying.

When Google implements their own tracker it'll have the biggest user base of any tracker on the market. Android is the most used OS in the world and it will ping off Samsung phones in addition to any other Android phone. That's the biggest advantage right there but to your point yes it still comes down to luck

It not your fault the tag didn't work well. I would blame samsumg objectively even as a samsung s23 ultra owner. You can't have the expectation that weather will be great and people will be around when an item with your tag is stolen. Even if theres not many people around that's not your fault. 23 minutes is not okay and you pressed the refresh button. This is the reality of what can happen even in a dense city center. I think samsung has some work to do. I was suprised there wasn't a ping to a device at least inside a neaby building.
