    I installed one on my bike a year ago. I feel much safer now. I think its a great idea because it will more likely prevent the bike from being stolen as opposed to using an Apple unit that will only notify you after the bike has been stolen.

    Interestingly I got visited by the local police today at my home. They were asking if I had seen a suspicious vehicle as a bike had been stolen and it was tracked. They didn't say if it was GPS or Apple but it was clear there was a single coming from it recently. My AirTag is stored on my bike in the 1st Aid bag in the saddle bag. It's an OK idea but not the theft protection you mention here. Very interesting video and product I had not heard of. Thanks!

    Oh, I think I get it now, it’s like a deterrent. Another good example of the alarm scaring off, I would be thief and also just the fact that they know they’re being tracked will probably deter them. Our local shop(Bicycle Gardens Winnipeg) who sells Dutch bikes said that three of their bikes were stolen and one of them had a café lock and was the one they got got back from police..

    I installed this on one of my bikes, but the included screws were way too long! So I had to use standard screws, and it kind of defeats the security aspect. The Knog documentation is rather sparse - have you figured out what the (rather well-hidden) sensitivity setting means? I also wish it had a fob so I wouldn't have to deal with the top to arm/disarm it. Great video :)

    i am interested in knowing what kind of range the bluetooth alert signaling has. I might give one of these a try. I don't think i want to alert people to where i am placing this device.. because a thief could then target how to defeat it.. and that it even exists.. a thick muffle could muffle the alarm.. and if the thief knows where the alarm is they know where to place the muffle over.. once i get one i will experment with ways to minimise the ability of a theif from muffling the alarm. and as for the screws.. i would double secure them by applying somthing over the screws so they are hidden and even getting the specialty screw driver will not be able to turn them .. somthing like GB weld or something like that.. also i am wondering if it would be possible to secure them to the frame with stainless stell hose clamps.

    There are no pre-existing holes where a water bottle holder would be and we are hesitant to drill holes in the stem of the scooter.
    Maybe 3M or heavy duty adhesive to the bottom of the scooter to conceal it?

    Hey do you know if it has the same issue/feature as AirTags where it notifies the phone of anyone who takes possession of your bike after they’ve had it for 12-24 hours? With the AirTags, it notifies them (iPhone or Android) and let’s them disable the tracker.

    • @BikeShopGirl
      @BikeShopGirl  Рік тому

      It is using the same tech, so I would assume so. Everyone I've heard from that recovered a bike using AirTags did it within 6-12 hours.

    • @azharel
      @azharel Рік тому

      It does notify who ever in close range as AirTag does only when you activate the Lost Mode through Find My app. But it would not notify like AirTag does when it follows you around if you are not the owner of the bike.

  • @cargobk
    @cargobk Рік тому

    This is very cool! I use a Bordo Alarm + an AirTag (in addition to the U lock), but I like that this is all in one and much cheaper than that combo. Another question is, can you reasonably use it on a shared family bike? A challenge with AirTags is that they can only be associated with one iCloud account, and that means that some family members are going to get annoying notifications whenever they use the bike. It would be cool to see if your partner is at least able to control the alarm from her phone.

      I did some research for the final review... In the US, 55% of cell phones are iPhones. It is relying on Apple technology for it all to work so I don't think they would have a viable affordable product without going the Apple route.

    • @LawrenceSeetoh
      @LawrenceSeetoh Рік тому +2

      @@BikeShopGirl I think so too, but in doing so they've effectively cute off 45% of the US market. And that is just here, what about the global market reach? Also there are already airtag mounts out in the market along with 3d printed ones for people who just want a tracker without the alarm, this makes its market even smaller. It's unfortunate though I think it's a great idea and has great potential. Don't mind my Apple only angst, this stems back some platform exclusive game issue that has irked me from a very long time ago.

    • @frankfurter7260
      @frankfurter7260 Рік тому +2

      @@LawrenceSeetoh, there are over 125 million iPhones in use in the US and over a billion around the world. I’m sure a good percent of e-bikers use one. The potential market is huge. Not for me though; I use myself as security. I never, ever leave my e-bike out of my physical possession. This alarm would IMO not deter a local bike thief. And the cops in my area (Manhattan) don’t care about e-bike theft unless you rob a bike store. One cop I spoke to at length was somewhat perturbed that the state doesn’t require them to be registered and licensed (he wanted to be able to track down hit and run e-bikers which I completely get but IMO the cons of e-bike registration outweigh the extra detective work required to find the perp w/o the benefit of a bike registration system). I got the sense he felt if you won’t require them to be regulated like autos and motorcycles then we have bigger fish to fry. Which I think is awful policy. Most e-bikes are expensive enough to constitute Grand Larceny - a felony. It would be my absolute pleasure to indict a bike thief on felony charges. Thank you for entertaining my tangent.

    • @LawrenceSeetoh
      @LawrenceSeetoh Рік тому

      Oh thank you for sharing, it was a pleasure to read your thoughts on this.
      for the Knog Scout, I just feel that by taking this route they saved money and got the product to the market faster but in doing so limited their market reach.
      And I concur, having and leaving the bike (locked) near me and/or in a secured place is indeed preferred option. Though having an annoying alarm is always a fun thing to have.
      As for the laws and regulations, TBH, even if bikes and E-bikes and license and registration, I doubt the NYPD will spend an iota of time tracking a stolen bike. They don't fancy us very much, less so ebike delivery folk.

    • @frankfurter7260
      @frankfurter7260 Рік тому

      @@LawrenceSeetoh I don’t fancy the e-bike delivery folk either because 99% of them are out of control and pay no attention to any rules. My pet peeve being the large number of delivery guys - and it’s always guys - that have a death wish and ride with no front light at night. It’s extremely dangerous. The city/police have no interest in e-bike theft or enforcement of basic common sense rules.

    I just purchased this & installed. The problem I'm having is when the alarm goes off, my iPhone gives me an alarm tone (of my choosing) but in order to shut the dang thing off I have to turn on my phone, find the KROG app and turn it off and sometimes that does not work - rather than having an onscreen notification that I can easily swipe. In the meantime, it's very disturbing. Should be able to turn it off with a swipe on a notification on the locked screen!
    Sometimes I have gloves on and have to remove gloves or sometimes the phone is in my purse or somewhere aways from me and the alarm is very loud on my phone. Now, I don't complain about the loudness but rather the time it takes to get to the phone, open it, find and open the app then hit the button. It's pretty disturbing to other people around me too.

    So the airtag is pretty much pointless unless you drive around and are within Bluetooth range. I wish they would make it more universal like with a Tile since Apple is greedy/selfish and never makes anything universal like android. But like you said I guess you really should just have a good alarm system because being in Bluetooth range after getting a bike stolen will be very difficult to track. Thanks for this review, I always thought airtags were gps trackers.

    • @frankfurter7260
      @frankfurter7260 Рік тому +4

      Incorrect. AirTags only require you to be in range of another iPhone which with over 1 billion in circulation is hard not to be. This is why you can track your AirTag around the world while you are at home. Tile in theory will work if you are within range of another device that has the tile app running in the background on their phone . I have both. If you have an iPhone you want to use AirTags which work very well. Tile I’ve never had any success with a lost item. The only thing the tile is useful for is quickly finding my phone if the tile is within Bluetooth range of the phone. I can click the tile it rings the phone. Big deal. I bet AirTag put a huge dent in tiles business.

      I work in packaging waste for tern and sit on a sustainability committee for the outdoor industry. The number of charging cables that are thrown away a year according to studies is insane!

      @@BikeShopGirl However for a product like this, which assumes an iPhone user has a cable that currently is not used on thr iPhone, is that really going to be the case? Is that waste of people having to go out and buy the cable offset by not providing it? This is not some random mini usb cable that is obsolete and people have five of them, a lot of people don't have type c cables yet.
      Consider how much packaging amazon will use to ship out a cable.

      @@AndrewStrydomBRP Recent EU legislation In 2024, a USB-C port will become mandatory for a whole range of electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and headphones. Well done EU.

      @@SimonBrowneNZ Doesn't really change anything right now since 2024 is still 8 months away, my point is still very much valid, and apple might also not even put ports on their next device, which is technically a bypass.

    I am locked out of the App … no customer service … i tried resetting password via email but the App still responded with incorrect credentials … the alarm will not turn off .. very frustrating ,,, removed from bike .. and looking for alternative … the bottom line … you pay for what you get … cheap solution!
