Love your quilt ! Such an amazing complementary colour palette ! I make my quilts similar to you ie I finish 5 top strips complete with block borders. My big difference is I keep the backing in one piece. I start by placing the centre strip (your strip 3) and it's batting in it's correct location then safety pin it down. I use my walking foot, then blanket stitch stitches on the largest setting and sew several undulating snake like sweeping lines longways across my long quilt top from short edge to short edge to join my "sandwich" ensuring I don't sew within an inch of the long side edges at this stage. When I'm happy Row 3 is suitably sewn down, I lay out the batting for my next row No 4 (usually work towards the right). Then place face down row 4 on top of the row you have quilted (No 3), using your existing row edge as a guide (no need to pin yet), using straight stitches sew quarter in Row 4 along the edge ensuring the batting overlaps neatly underneath so that these joining seams secure the batting and the quilt top edges. Then flip Row 4 over to the correct side, smooth, flattern and pin, but only snake sew about 4 inches from this joining seam to ensure you can completely flatten as you go all the parts of your sandwich as yet not sew down, getting no tucks or creases on the backing. Only smooth and pin the space between your length-wise rows to ensure you always have acess to the betting and backing to smooth and flattern as you go all the time; keep quilting pattern rows about 4 inches apart (about a palm width, which is what I would use to guide my fabric anyway). Snake sew several more seams down the length. Again not sewing right to the edge. Join section 5 in the same way. As you now have half the quilt sandwich stitched down you can do the same snake across-ways. I also use the same snake wavy seams to criss-cross and make double-helix shapes (you could use your favourite pattern). Then turn the quilt and finish joining the remaining strip rows away from your centre strip across the rest of the backing ie sewing Row No 2, then Row No 1. You only have to get half a quilt into the sewing machine throat at any time max. All my quilts are on my FB in my same name as YT. I have tried all the methods, and for me this works best, is easiest and most enjoyable to do for excellent results with a home sewing machine (a nice Janome semi computerized/semi industrial I have to say). I'm nearly 66, I've made 78 quilts in 2 years and am just about to make No 79. This method probably has a name, but I don't know it, and discovered it through trial and error.

I use the qayg method in a lot of different ways and have done for years before it actually became a thing, I have dyslexia and find it extremely difficult to process information and used to beat myself up why I can't do a great deal of things even when watching. For me it's like trying to do it in a mirror kack handed tbh. I just wing it mostly and my daughter says it's always the best work. I've always used claped out machines that are on the way to sewing machine heaven and it's called vintage apparently. I think if I got caught by the quilting police I'd be shot. Lol. I can't explain most of what and how I do what I do but it turns out well and has lots of complements. I go out of my way to find an alternative to the complicated. Lol again. Keep up the good work and failures to show us all how things go wrong because they do to all of so often. .
@debzl8990 I like your style! Finding your own way is a skill that often isn’t appreciated. I’m not dyslexic but I often don’t gel with the way others do things. Sometimes it probably looks like I’m taking the long way around to things but it makes more sense to me if not to everyone else. I did a similar quilt as you go for my first large quilt, except I went along the length if the columns with wavy lines, leaving two inches all the way around each column that was not quilted and I did quilt with the backing on. Then I carefully stitched the front of two columns together, then joined the batting and then folded the backing under carefully and hand stocked the backing together followed up by stitch in the ditch. I decided I liked the look of the two inches all The way round without any quilting. It turned out pretty well and would do it again if the quilt would allow me do so. I ended up choosing this method as I had an old sewing machine on its last legs with little throat space to maneuver a queen size quilt through. Needs must and it worked.
I absolutely love this quilt. It’s so bright and happy, and the crumb petals really give it that extra spark. Honestly, this is one of my favorite quilts I’ve seen in a very long time. I may have to start collecting denim scraps.

Fantastic. This is what I call REAL quilty. Not everybody including me has fancy sewing rooms with large tables to use. I've used the floor too to spread out the layers. And not everybody has a longarm either.
Oh I know! I have a lot of fancy stuff now but I totally get not everybody does! Also I’ve now crammed so much into my sewing room I struggle for the floor space to lay anything out properly 😂!

Love the way you did QAYG . I m going to try it on the table runner ( making Double Orange Peel design). Also like the same color crumb blocks. My crumb are all different fabric. I used my crumbs for the petals, but I'm going to switch and start making stacks greens, pinks etc like you did. Have a wonderful day/

I absolutely LOVE this quilt! ❤ I have been using a different QAYG method for years. I might try your method on the next one. Stitching on either side of the join seam is a great idea to keep that seam a little flatter.
fantastic! I showed a quilt I made using your NFQAYG method to my quilting group and many were quite intrigued. So I shared your youtube info. There is some very light weight batting available that would be good to use with denim to reduce thickness oh and LOL '...it looks like a football..."

Love this quilt. I keep wanting to get the Accuqilt orange peel die now despite my MANY unused dies and other projects, lol! I love how the back turned out too. Great ideas. ❤
What a lovely quilt!! I love this method, I also found it a bit hard to match seams perfectly but you can't see it after it was washed :) And I did go closer to 1/2 inch versus the 1/4 on the seams. My mistake was to layer the quilt on a bed not the floor or a table. It was much easier when I used a table as everything was super flat.
Readjusting and sewing slow is the only way I can keep things straight myself. I could have unpicked and rematched my seams on that one row but who has the patience for that….well not me obviously 😂

That turned out great! I'm glad you went with the plain border. I used a similar quilt as you go method on some of my first quilts many years ago, only I quilted through all three layers - but it was easier to manipulate them than it would be for your denim quilt! Love watching and listening to your process.
Thanks for watching! If I was doing straight line quilting on a cotton quilt I would definitely go through all 3 layers. But yes the denim quilts are a bit heavier! Makes them nicer to snuggle under when they are done though!

Yeah I’ll never know the answer about the IDT - can’t believe I didn’t notice it wasn’t clicked in 😂…. Surprised I remember my own name sometimes…. Haven’t weighed the quilt. It’s heavier than cotton but not ridiculously heavy or anything like that. It was blowing over in the breeze when I was trying to take photos!

I am not a quilter - I've made a few, but my real love is garment sewing - anyway ... I love your attitude on your sewing/quilting. You just jump in there and go! This quilt turned out really nice and will be so useable for your family. It's nice to see quilts that get used. Yes, I love seeing "art" quilts too, but it's equally enjoyable to see quilts that will be used as quilts. I hope that came out as the compliment I intended. 🙂 I haven't watched your other videos in this series so I apologize if you already answered, but is there a reason you didn't just do the quilting on your long arm?
Thanks very much. And yes there is a reason - the last few times I’ve tried a denim quilt on the long arm I’ve had issues with stretching and puckering. Probably a trick to it as I know other folk do denim quilts on a long arm but I haven’t figured it out yet!

Thanks for showing this! I love how real you are. We do a lot of things the same! I wonder if this method helps the quilt be more flowy/drapy while still showing a lot of quilting lines? that's been one of the things I'm learning is that less quilting/hand tied quilts are cozier than the quilts with a lot of quilting if that makes sense?!
Yes I often find denim quilts in particular need some unquilted areas - that’s where they feel soft and coziest. My other denim and scraps quilt that I did square by square and added the false back is very lovely and drapey. This one is to but slightly less so because of the poly batting. The other one was 80/20 or straight cotton I think.
I love the finished quilt! You've inspired me! I've decided to put mine on cut up squares of a wide ombre Grunge backing that I never used, because I don't have the denim available. This was really an inspired idea that you had!
I love the way your quilt turned out! The denim looks much nicer than I thought it would. Now I want to make one! But I’m thinking of leaving the batting out. 🤔 I live in a somewhat warm climate so may not need it on a bed. I guess for a picnic quilt, the batting would be nice…. Gorgeous, I’m definitely going to try this. Is there a “rule” as to not quilting a heavy denim quilt on a Longarm? I suppose you could always use a “Denim” needle in the Longarm… I may try a placemat sized option and Longarm quilt it 🤷🏻♀️
No no rule - I have just had some issues with stretching of the denim resulting in puckers when I have quilted denim quilts on the long arm. Probably just a trick to it I haven’t learned yet!
😂yes! I mentioned in the video i didn’t have my IDT engaged - that is the built in walking foot on the Pfaff. It was the little black thing bobbing behind my foot that should have been clicked into the back. It obviously didn’t effect the sewing so much as i didn’t even notice it wasn’t on until I was editing the video 😂!
What tricks do you use to make finishing your quilts easier for you? They don't have to be qayg tips!
I almost always use batting that allows quilting to be 8-10" apart so I can do less quilting.
Good tip! I wish I had kept the label for mine so I at least knew what the distance was supposed to be 😂

Not surprised you haven’t been sewing if you also have your mother to tend to, hope you can find a few minutes here and there to do a little of what makes you happy. Love the way you did QAYG . I m going to try it on the table runner ( making Double Orange Peel design). Also like the same color crumb blocks. My crumb are all different fabric. I used my crumbs for the petals, but I'm going to switch and start making stacks greens, pinks etc like you did. Have a wonderful day/

Thanks! Yes I don’t miss having to roll and tug the whole thing - my shoulders didn’t hurt at all doing it this way and they used to be mega sore when I basted whole quilts and quilted them on a domestic.

I absolutely LOVE this quilt! ❤ I have been using a different QAYG method for years. I might try your method on the next one. Stitching on either side of the join seam is a great idea to keep that seam a little flatter.

fantastic! I showed a quilt I made using your NFQAYG method to my quilting group and many were quite intrigued. So I shared your youtube info. There is some very light weight batting available that would be good to use with denim to reduce thickness

What a lovely quilt!! I love this method, I also found it a bit hard to match seams perfectly but you can't see it after it was washed :) And I did go closer to 1/2 inch versus the 1/4 on the seams. My mistake was to layer the quilt on a bed not the floor or a table. It was much easier when I used a table as everything was super flat.
Readjusting and sewing slow is the only way I can keep things straight myself. I could have unpicked and rematched my seams on that one row but who has the patience for that….well not me obviously 😂
Same for me :) Once I get to the quilting part I just want to be done!

That turned out great! I'm glad you went with the plain border. I used a similar quilt as you go method on some of my first quilts many years ago, only I quilted through all three layers - but it was easier to manipulate them than it would be for your denim quilt! Love watching and listening to your process.
Thanks for watching! If I was doing straight line quilting on a cotton quilt I would definitely go through all 3 layers. But yes the denim quilts are a bit heavier! Makes them nicer to snuggle under when they are done though!
I have a pile of denim squares that have been waiting for the right project. Your use of denim in several great quilts has brought them to front of mind so maybe I will finally use them soon.

Yeah I’ll never know the answer about the IDT - can’t believe I didn’t notice it wasn’t clicked in 😂…. Surprised I remember my own name sometimes…. Haven’t weighed the quilt. It’s heavier than cotton but not ridiculously heavy or anything like that. It was blowing over in the breeze when I was trying to take photos!

OMG thanks so much for this tutorial!! I've been doing other methods of quilt as you go and struggling to keep all the seams lined up. This will be so much easier for me as I have a Juki TL2010Q and not much throat space. Can't wait to try this!

I am not a quilter - I've made a few, but my real love is garment sewing - anyway ... I love your attitude on your sewing/quilting. You just jump in there and go! This quilt turned out really nice and will be so useable for your family. It's nice to see quilts that get used. Yes, I love seeing "art" quilts too, but it's equally enjoyable to see quilts that will be used as quilts. I hope that came out as the compliment I intended. 🙂 I haven't watched your other videos in this series so I apologize if you already answered, but is there a reason you didn't just do the quilting on your long arm?
Thanks very much. And yes there is a reason - the last few times I’ve tried a denim quilt on the long arm I’ve had issues with stretching and puckering. Probably a trick to it as I know other folk do denim quilts on a long arm but I haven’t figured it out yet!

Thanks for showing this! I love how real you are. We do a lot of things the same! I wonder if this method helps the quilt be more flowy/drapy while still showing a lot of quilting lines? that's been one of the things I'm learning is that less quilting/hand tied quilts are cozier than the quilts with a lot of quilting if that makes sense?!
Yes I often find denim quilts in particular need some unquilted areas - that’s where they feel soft and coziest. My other denim and scraps quilt that I did square by square and added the false back is very lovely and drapey. This one is to but slightly less so because of the poly batting. The other one was 80/20 or straight cotton I think.
I love the finished quilt! You've inspired me! I've decided to put mine on cut up squares of a wide ombre Grunge backing that I never used, because I don't have the denim available. This was really an inspired idea that you had!

I love the way your quilt turned out! The denim looks much nicer than I thought it would. Now I want to make one! But I’m thinking of leaving the batting out. 🤔 I live in a somewhat warm climate so may not need it on a bed. I guess for a picnic quilt, the batting would be nice…. Gorgeous, I’m definitely going to try this. Is there a “rule” as to not quilting a heavy denim quilt on a Longarm? I suppose you could always use a “Denim” needle in the Longarm… I may try a placemat sized option and Longarm quilt it 🤷🏻♀️
No no rule - I have just had some issues with stretching of the denim resulting in puckers when I have quilted denim quilts on the long arm. Probably just a trick to it I haven’t learned yet!

Using a walking foot would make your work easier.
😂yes! I mentioned in the video i didn’t have my IDT engaged - that is the built in walking foot on the Pfaff. It was the little black thing bobbing behind my foot that should have been clicked into the back. It obviously didn’t effect the sewing so much as i didn’t even notice it wasn’t on until I was editing the video 😂!
