HAPPY MONDAY EVERYONE. Family was visiting this weekend so this video had to take second place. I just loved making these blocks. I can't believe how many scraps I was to use up. Thank you for the video. I quit little quilting I did after diagnosis with cancer. I m not good at it. But enjoy spending time doing it. But this video tempted me to finish my scrap and may be I will give it a go. I m from Sri Lanka where long arm machine even doesn’t exist for what I know. Only garment factories probably might have. Your smile is like a sun shine 😊.
I laughed out loud as soon as I saw your title. I've made string quilts and absolutely love making them, but I've yet to use up all my scraps and I made my first quilt 41 years ago. But I'm going to keep trying and this was a great video. I'm so glad you shared this awesome block.
Thank you sooooo much for your clear and concise explanation of your QAYG method. You don’t know how much I really needed to understand how to join the blocks together. I appreciate all your videos and practical techniques.
OMG! Thank you soooo much for the clear and concise directions and the tidbits and reminders. I have been sewing since a child but only quilting for 3 years. I do not have space for a large quilter and this idea is ingenious. I have seen others on youtube show HOW but You Method is Number One! I love the one inch binding- Its Perfect. You have saved me! Thank you Karen! 😀
This was so perfectly executed. So detailed, easy to understand at every level, so very thoughtful down to the last detail. Don't forget to check this, look out for this, double check this before this. Plus so many clear examples and demonstrations. This is the ultimate quilting video. I've never seen a better teaching video. Plus your voice is so soothing. Amazing fantastic job!!! ❤❤❤
Karen, this is the CLEAREST, most informative video I've seen on QAYG. I'm looking forward to the next in the series. Thanks so much, Your friend from New Mexico, Carla 🎶 💖 💐
Thank you ever so! My grandkids who are 12 and 14 (boy and girl), are making their first quilts. They are doing 9 inch blocks when it’s completed will be a mosaic pattern so obviously the styles are different. Trying to find someone with a long arm that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to quilt. It has been a struggle. Watching your video. I am now confident that we can do it at home and I know the kids will be excited to do it also. thank you so much for such an in-depth instructional video.
Thank u for the video I learned a lot and plan to make a quilt this way. I live on the BI and Have been doing Hawaiian quilting since 1994. That cruse sounds really nice . My only problem is I am viewing this video 1 yr late
This is a method I should try to use up many small pieces. Scraps from each quilt all in their own blocks would be a fun memory quilt for myself since I give away almost all of my quilts.
I make scrap blocks but use muslin as the base and make a quilt top and quilt as usual but this method looks interesting, will definitely try this. Thanks for the interesting videos.
Now you’ve set my brain working, @judyallhands3361. I’ve been craving a coverlet (summer-weight quilt with no traditional batting) but knew it would be best to have a middle layer not some kind, not just a pieced top and a backing. Your use of muslin might just be the perfect weight and will add the necessary opaqueness and added stability. Thank you for commenting.
I did the "squares on diagonal" method as an experiment. My center was a consistent white and I put all medium values on one side and dark values on the other. The resulting lighter and darker diamonds with the white faux sashing looked great.
Thanks for your clever ideas. Sometimes one needs a refreshing idea to move through the accumulation of blocks. This was a big boost for me ...thanks so much
Great tutorial on quilt as you go. Thank you, Karen. We need more of these tutorials even for some of us that have been quilting for awhile. Our brains sometimes get foggy.
Been waiting for you to do a QAYG, I knew your video would be the most knowledgeable one out there. Will be rethink my scraps and looking forward to the next video. Thank you Karen for teaching us so much.
Perfect timing. I just received 30+ QAYG log cabin blocks from the 1970s. Go gold, orange and brown! Im going to use this method to stitch up several smaller quilts for charity and honor the mystery woman who made the blocks so lovingly all those years ago.
I just want to say that your graphics are so simple yet so helpfull!! I do the same when I teach. Those simple examples when you apply a concept to the actual mather in question are the most effective to make your point across and visualize it. Im always impressed when i watch your videos and I'm mad i didn't told you sooner. You rock!! ❤
Thank you so much. Some techniques need the graphics to be clear, sometimes I don’t have a clear video angle so I use a graphic and sometimes the brain needs a break.
You can also start sewing in the centre of the block and build out like a log cabin. For the first centre piece sometimes I make a small patchwork grid, or use a picture for an eye spy piece. Another fab how to Karen!
Absolutely thrilled with your quilting tips. As an older new comer to quilting, I appreciate the knowledge you put into your tutorials. You .ake it seemseeasy even though it is anything but easy. You give great tips based on your experiences over the years and give information of how to, why to, when to and all of that information is filled with answers of why and how. So basically you tell us this is how, these are the tips of things i learned over the years and why is answered as well! I hope that makes sense. Thank you Karen!!
Good evening lovely Karen, Can i be mean and say that i really love your video's that show you making something.. I love your hints and tips, but i so much enjoy them more when you share what you are making with us. One of these days i might get to go on a retreat of a crafty kind, any crafty kind as i love all crafts, but oh does your trip to Honolulu sound lovely. Please, have a wonderful time and bring us back all the wonderful highlights, leaving any secrets on board so that we can't let them escape. Thank you for another great video, sending you crafty hugs from Norah, GLenochil, Central Scotland
Brilliant video, thanks Karen, when I will get fed up wrestling with a huge quilt going through my little domestic sewing machine, this is the kind of quilt I'll make❤
I've watched many QAYG videos. But yours is the only one that has shown how to put the blocks together to make a quilt. THANKS!!!! The whole project makes sense now.
As a lazy quilter, this seems like a good idea for making coasters, trivets, placemats, and hot/cold pads. Piecing the blocks together to make a full-size quilt looks like a pain in the butt. And neck and shoulders. 😊 I see some scrappy gifts-for-friends projects in my near future.
This is so fun! I like to use a slightly wider strip folded in half on the top so I don’t have to deal with turning under that quarter-inch, but I learned that I make it a hair bigger than the math says because you lose a smidge of fabric in the fold. Then I top-stitch on both sides of the top of the binding. If you use a jelly roll strip, you cut 1” off and are left with a 1.5” strip the you press in half with wrong sides together for the front. Anyway, I hope this makes sense. It’s such a swell method…now I want to go make scrappy blocks! Thank you so much for the inspiration. Also, that fusible bobbin thread is blowing my mind…absolutely brilliant!
I've always been confused on how the binding between the squares worked, especially the top side. your video made it so obvious, thank you for solving a mystery for me!
Love your method. You simplified QAYG down to something I understand and know I can do. Thanks for your videos they always have great information that is user friendly in them.
Dear Karen, thanks a lot for the video including tips and tutorial. I Heard about QAYG several Times, but it never caught my interest as much as you did with this easy to follow and understandable tutorial. The advantages of QAYG are perfect and also an easier start into quilting blankets for beginners. Regards from Germany Stephanie
This is my first time watching your channel. I'm Celeste from Indiana and it's so nice watching you! Thank you for taking time for us to always learn something!
Thank you so much for this fantastic idea. I made a large patchwork quilt for a wedding gift last year and wished I had seen this video before hand. I am now using your idea for many more quilts as my family has out in many orders since the wedding quilt ❤
I'm kind of drowning in scraps right now! Rather than try to figure out more storage space, I need to do THIS! This is particularly nice for summertime. I do NOT want a big heavy quilt all over me this time of year!😊
Fantastic to know, thank you Karen for helping us deal with all our cutoffs, and to manage the bulk with our domestic sewing machine. Again a big THANK YOU. 👍❤️😊
Oh Karen! Hawaiian quilting in Hawaii! Happy trip! Enjoy 😊you will learn so much. And share with us?😁I did a pillow with a Hawaiian sea turtle design. Had questions on the corners and curves.
❤ I now understand QAYG much better, this method will be on my to do list. I have a bin of different size strips, now they will have a purpose. Thanks for sharing.
I so love this method. Makes my life easier and more productive while living in a small space. I can work on making several styles of blocks at the same time while I continue to collect scraps to complete my projects.

Thanks. This is the first time that QAYG has really made sense to me.
same! the binding of each block confused me but Karen is a fab teacher xx
Me too!
I agree! It was a great video!
Agreed!
There are many more videos out there that are much easier to follow.
Best Quilt as You Go video on UA-cam!!!!
‘Tips and tricks’ has never been so applicable, thank you Karen.😊
As so many others finally I understand how to combine the single blocks together.
As always, best verbal instructions on the internet for quilt tutorials, and this was the best QAYG video tutorial as well! Thank you.
Love that you pack so much in each video.!
Thank you. Your teaching style is so easy to understand.
Your videos are better and more detailed than classes I've taken in quilt shops!!
Thank you for the video. I quit little quilting I did after diagnosis with cancer. I m not good at it. But enjoy spending time doing it. Finally a great explanation of how these blocks and quilts are made. Thank you so much!

Where do the scraps go?😅
@@carlaatkins2619 They go to find friends to bring back home with them.
The first thing I love about this, is the ruler as a template! That is awesome
Thank you sooooo much for your clear and concise explanation of your QAYG method. You don’t know how much I really needed to understand how to join the blocks together. I appreciate all your videos and practical techniques.
Looking forward to this mini-series!!!! The quilt on your Birch mattress is spectacular!
loved how you put these blocks together, you explained it so clear, thanks
This is the best video for QAYG. very clear, concise and precise instrucyion❤
This was the best and most detailed tutorial I have seen on QAYG method. Thank you!!!!

Cissy and her sister have an open house sewing session every Sunday if you are ever in Honolulu
This was best explanation for quilt as you go I have seen and will be great for the charity quilts I make
This is a method I should try to use up many small pieces. Scraps from each quilt all in their own blocks would be a fun memory quilt for myself since I give away almost all of my quilts.
Julie, super idea💡. I am going to borrow it!!
You look slimmer and ''brighter'' . Whatever you do do, keep on ! Congrats for your commitment and perseverance. 😉

Great tutorial Karen, I love the way you work. Fast and super resultats. Thank you.
That shade of lipstick looks good with your complexion.
Thank you

I bet that looks beautiful!
I wish we could post pictures here as I would love to see it.
I did a similar design, using black "Grunge" as my diagonal center, but then just kept it scrappy. The blocks turned out better than I'd hoped!
I used bright yellow for a kid charity quilt. It was really fun to make.
@@carlaatkins2619me too!!
A method I have always intended to try, but never have. The visual is so helpful.
I love tutorials about scraps! I love your dollar store finds too. Keep up the good work!

Great tutorial on quilt as you go. Thank you, Karen. We need more of these tutorials even for some of us that have been quilting for awhile. Our brains sometimes get foggy.
You are so welcome!
You look amazing!!! It’s obvious you’re working hard to feel more comfortable in your clothes.
😲🤔😃😃😃 Thank you! I've always avoided this technique because of the "connecting" step. This is doable 💖
What a clever way to QAYG. The binding is a neater way to make it work. Love the layout options too. Thanks. 🇦🇺
