I think it is kind of unfair to limit an aspect ratio to 16:9 or to crop the vertical image to fit it. Why should a game, even when it is competitive, limit player in such ways? Sure, the argument would be that it is unfair to see more. But it is also unfair that some people have a better pc and that some have a higher refresh rate monitor or a higher resolution monitor. To make it truly fair, all competitive gamemodes need to be limited to 60fps and 1920x1080 resolution at the lowest ingame settings. But when they don't limit the player in such a way, there is also no reason why they limit us in a wider aspecta ratio.
from my personal experience the advantage of wider aspect ratio depends on the situation. I find myself having a much harder time getting no-scopes or flick shots on spot due to the fact that the center of the screen becomes harder to identify when it fills out your peripheral vision... still, since I am barely playing competitive games now, I am very likely buying a 21:9 34 inch. I had an ultra wide and I didn’t like it. It was just too wide, I was getting killed by things in my peripheral vision. I used a 50” 4K TV for a while, but that was just too big for any productivity at all. I have a 16:9 144hz 1ms ordered and hopefully it’s “just right.”
I really love this clear non shouting commentary. Too many ppl just put everything loud right in your face for attention sor something. This is really nice tho. :)
As he said, its hard to see things in his periferal vision, its probably not as big of an advantage as it seems... but it probably is a hell of alot more immersive as the screen covers more of your field of vision, instead of you seeing a square thats the monitor, you have more. Id love to try an ultrawide.
Well a "curved" ultra wide screen might help, and you could also sit a bit far back from the monitor to get a better whole view without turning your head left and right.
I feel like the world isn’t ready for ultra wide yet. Not many games support it, and the ones that don’t look ugly stretched to 21:9. I’m gonna go back to 16:9 until the world moves on.
Hey man I really like your videos. The SFF builds and this stuff. The only thing I wish you included was how much harder it is to drive the extra pixels going ultra wide. Found out my 3440x1440p 100hz was much harder to driver than I thought.
Around the time i posted that Comment; 11 months ago, with was June 2019 if my math holds up :) also i should sate that i have not used an UltraWide, so it was hearsay/ what i saw.
@@pikatrainer3835 i have played fortnite on an ultrawide for a long time and the only restriction i have seen is when playing a competitive game mode, like arena it crops your monitor.
I don’t think there is a significant gain in competitive advantage between these aspect ratios. Back when I used to run Nvidia surround triple 23” monitors gave more screen space in supported games. Leaving that I didn’t feel that I lost anything despite losing a good bit of field of view which didn’t matter to me. 21:9 is immersive but I don’t see the advantage competitively for the most part. Also with refresh I guess everyone will have a preference but I would argue the difference between 120 and 165hz is still quite noticeable. Though 120hz is still a fantastic place to be when compared to anything sub 100hz. With that being said I try to play at 165hz wherever possible. Additionally, I find QHD to be a great res for my 1080 Ti/8700K and 165 FPS target.
@@cavyq dude same I loved my Alienware ultrawide it was so sexy but for games like fortnite (go ahead make fun of me lol) I felt like I cant play as good as my asus pg279q monitor. but games like shadow of war and shadow of tomb raider ultrawide is dope
Important fact when buying an ultra wide monitor is that directly when playing Fortnite in tournaments the screen is cut to a monitor of approximately 27 inches, the ultra wide disappears, but in other types of games you can play perfectly with the monitor at your fingertips full expression!
A fascinating & thought out look at the in between of 16:9 & 21:9. I believe I am pretty content with my PG278Q. TBH though, I have never really been able to get up to over a hundred Hz anyways. I prefer all the bells & whistles turned on in game. Want to see all the pretty pixels. Feels like just a numbers game to me. That Alienware though, very sexy.
Hello fellow PG278Q owner! I bought mine day one and have absolutely loved the hell out of it. I made sure I was investing in a nice monitor in 2015 so that way I wouldn't have to worry about that for a few years. Now almost three years later, I'm still very content with my purchase. Seeing all this new stuff is very awesome and sometimes enticing (I'm looking at you sexy Alienware Ultrawide), but my hardware has finally caught up to a point where I get over 100 fps. Back then I had a GTX 780 and at the time playing games like BF4 on Ultra settings, really put a toll of my fps. It was literally a jumping bean throughout dogfights, but thanks to G-Sync, it was all buttery smooth so I never had any noticeable screen tearing whether it was a jumping from 68 to 113 to 96fps. All good.
omgblur I have yet to witness "screen tearing" as an effect. In my time, I have actually turned G-sync off because it has caused too much incompatibility issues with many current titles. Mostly due to "Out of bound", where the monitor can't keep up with refreshes. Even still, no tearing. I believe that & blur is just due to optimization on the software side & not a monitor's fault. I guess I got lucky, mine is still strong.
@David Whitfield Well, hard to tell at this point what it could be. I've turned off Gsync in the Ctrl panel but still persists. I can deal with it but can be annoying when reading text. Now I don't trust any monitors. LoL
@David Whitfield Indeed it is. If I look closely enough, I can see the pixels flicker or shift somewhat. Almost like they are dancing left & right. I'll still use it until it fails though.
Those things are gonna cost $2k+. The Asus 4k 144hz FALD monitor is coming in at $3k. Not to mention they use a shitty VA AUO panel and apparently can't be able to do 4k 144hz HDR without chroma subsampling...which is disappointing to say the least. 4:4:4 with HDR at 4k is limited to 98hz. Not even 4k 120hz HDR can be done without chroma subsampling. That's horrible. The Asus 4k 144hz HDR FALD monitor (which the ultrawides will be based off) still uses an 8bit panel...so technically not even HDR10 compliant. Then the local dimming has been shown to cause distracting/annoying halos around bright objects on screen, like your mouse cursor, and there are videos of how slow it reacts to movement on screen, and it looks pretty bad.
GrayFox370 exactly... I dunno why ppl are so excited for it. I'll be jumping on this train in maybe 5yrs once technology has improved better and it's fucking cheaper too.
A lot of competitive FPS games and Fighting game that I love to play SUCK on my ultrawide monitor. I'm buying a second 16:9 27 inch monitor just to play those games. The ultrawide will be the place to game MMORPGs and single player titles
I have both types of monitors, a 27 in 144hz 2560x1440p and a 60 hz 34 in 3440x1440p. In my opinion I like my ultrawide a lot better. If you're into competitive gaming, mainly shooters then go for the 144hz. But if you're like me and play all sorts of games like Forza, GTA V, PUBG, Tomb Raider, Starcraft, and Dota 2 to name a few then having that extra real estate is great and so much more immersive. Not to mention shooters look great on it also. And as mentioned have a slight advantage at times. Even when not gaming having the real estate of 2 24 inch monitors comes in handy for prductivity. Theres even a lot of movies shot in ultrawide and looks fucking awesome when done right. If money ain't a problem then go for the ultrawide with the 200hz coming out in the future, but if not, then I seen a LG IPS 3440x1440p for $400 on slickdeals. Also another side note, don't go for 1080p for ultrawide monitors. The pixel density is just too noticeable imo. And also try to get 34 inch. Sorry for the TLDR type post lol. Just giving my insights from my experience. 😎
I've been looking at getting a 100hz 3440x1440p ultrawide, I only have a 6gb 1060 though so will have to upgrade that... I'm looking at around 2 grand total. Is the ultrawide really worth it?
@@jimmygrey6848 depends on how you like to game and watch your media. 100 hz is plenty smooth for me and I rather have the extra screen real estate. Also I'm not bothered by the black bars on some videos. The extra immersion in all games are well worth it to me. Just imagine how games like Cyberpunk, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Red Dead 2 will look in Ultrawide. Just a side note, you can play PS4 on this but you'll have to deal with side bars. I spent only $450 on my ultrawide 1440p. Worth it at that price imo. For $850 I would do the 144hz model. Soon they might have figure out how to do 34 inch HDR curved 1440p 144hz 1ms IPS or VA monitor. Lol
I ended up buying a 16:9 1440p Ips, 144hz monitor. Came down to money in the end, I really wanted the ultrawide but I saved around $400 which I'll put into a GPU upgrade most likely.
Naw. The downside of larger monitors is that it takes longer for your eyeballs to travel from one part of a screen to another. But when we are talking movies, why not, or working on a monitor: sure! Games, it depends...
I have the Acer Predator X34P (120Hz) Ultrawide and the Asus Rog PG279 (144Hz). After having both displays, I can honestly say that once you play on an ultrawide display its almost impossible to go back to a 16:9 display. Obviously my Ultrawide cost more about $3-400 more but again it was worth it. I plan on keeping both displays.

If you have a system that can push games like Battlefield 1,fortnite etc. 100 fps with that screen, you're going to do decent and enjoy it. I didn't buy a 16:9 monitor because i don't play for competitive reasons. It's not like i'm going to become a pro CS GO player or anything, 100hz is fine, altough there is a big difference between 200hz and 100hz. Unfortunately, you will have black bars on the sides if you're going to watch videos/movies on some websites, but you can download an ultrawide extension to stretch the videos so it fits your screen.

I got it a year ago during Neweggs black November deals for $449. Haven't seen it that low since I got it.
I’m excited because today I ordered a 75hz ultra wide hdr10 29” 1080p freesync IPS display from LG for $189 on sale on Amazon. Normally it’s $250 but Black Friday had some sweet deal this week. Friend recommended it to me because he loves it, budget now is $189 for ultra wide with HDR10
Perfect Video but i think the big question is: play 16:9 and 21:9 Players the same match? If it is ... its just a lil bit unfair. Can you make a rew. of the Msi monitor? And can you test the acer predator z301? I thinks that is the best of both worlds (29“, 21:9, 2560x1080, VA Panel and 144-200hz).
I almost wasted my money on one of these until I realized I almost never even use the edges of the screen on games. So I bought a 4k 144hz instead I'm really happy btw you don't have to run @4k 1440 & 1600 looks great scaled but a GPU will end up coming out that can push it

I used to play with no sound so I could concentrate better in competitive games. This made me unstoppable. I have an ultra wide and the bots I play against dont have a chance.
My literally only complaint about 21:9 gaming is the fact that Blizzard refuses to support it with Overwatch. Strange considering they have no problem supporting it with Heroes of the Storm where you _do_ in fact gain a meaningful advantage, being able to see _and interact_ with more of the playing area without moving your viewpoint.
I love my ultrawide even if it is just a 60hz monitor at 1080p. Still, with a 1080ti, I'm upscaling/supersampling pushing everything at 1440p minimum but mainly 4k and I'm living the fact I can just crop the screen to 16:9. It's like having two monitors in one.I have my 16:9 for Overwatch and 21:9 for my Rise of The Tomb Raider and Witcher 3.
You almost got me with that tunnelbear ad part I was gonna be like cmon not another techtuber talking about it. Also congrats on entering the esports environment best of luck to you and your team
The thing about csgo is that with the way you move and look around the map you always have the center of your screen being the leading edge. Peripheral vision in csgo isnt really that important because of this, like alot of pros even use 4:3 stretched to sacrifice peripheral vision for wider player models that are easier to spot and aim on. The one big advantage i could see ultra wide and super ultra wide having is for stretching either a 4:3 or 16:9 ratio all to way to 21:9 or wider to have a really stretched out player models for easier aiming. Maybe you should do a short video or something like that exploring stretched aspect ratios for csgo and other competitive shooters and if getting a ultra wide for that reason is worth it or practical.

I had an ultra wide and I didn’t like it. It was just too wide, I was getting killed by things in my peripheral vision. I used a 50” 4K TV for a while, but that was just too big for any productivity at all. I have a 16:9 144hz 1ms ordered and hopefully it’s “just right.”
why im watching this when i cant buy these things
gaming gaming gaming
21:9 isn't that expensive. 16:9 24" version of a monitor I like is £135 and 21:9 29" is £180.
Lol why am I watching when I have 32:9 4k
you actually deserve so many more subs tbh! keep up the good work!
PrinceShadow - Thanks for the kind words my friend!
No matter how good your monitor is, you still need a better gaming chair
I really love this clear non shouting commentary. Too many ppl just put everything loud right in your face for attention sor something. This is really nice tho. :)
As he said, its hard to see things in his periferal vision, its probably not as big of an advantage as it seems... but it probably is a hell of alot more immersive as the screen covers more of your field of vision, instead of you seeing a square thats the monitor, you have more. Id love to try an ultrawide.
Justyn HaLl Yeah, thats true, very tru, makes sense.
Well a "curved" ultra wide screen might help, and you could also sit a bit far back from the monitor to get a better whole view without turning your head left and right.
Very good comment. Thanks
In Pubg - it'd probably make a little difference - I often 3rd person peek around corners - so getting an extra inch of sight would be pretty useful.
3:44 & now Fortnite locks everyone to 16:9, hello black bars on Ultrawide.
XD yess
When did this happen?
Around the time i posted that Comment; 11 months ago, with was June 2019 if my math holds up :)
also i should sate that i have not used an UltraWide, so it was hearsay/ what i saw.
@@pikatrainer3835 i have played fortnite on an ultrawide for a long time and the only restriction i have seen is when playing a competitive game mode, like arena it crops your monitor.
Makes Sense, as i watched i lot of FNRB streamers back in the day. TY man.
I still use a 16:10 1920x1200 monitor, I prefer it over 16:9 but sadly when I finally upgrade to 4k they don't make any 16:10 displays
So are we just not gonna talk about how cracked this guy is at FPS games?
dude I always gotta get some good food when watching ur videos! so enjoyable
Why?
This is the exact kind of video I was looking for anyone having a 16:9 vs 21:9 internal fight. Thank you !
The downside of larger monitors is that it takes longer for your eyeballs to travel from one part of a screen to another
myth cause i see the whole image at once.
Wanted to say awesome job with the editing man. The transitions between the resolutions was great.
Ultrawide is dope. I can never go back to 16:9. You can see so much more in games with an ultrawide.
I've tried a 240Hz and own a 144Hz. Damn the 240Hz is the ultimate Smoothness; 144Hz feels a bit "Meh". Is there an in-Between, like a 19:9 ratio ?
freepok Smartphone with 18:9 ratio
I own one, I have to agree. 144hz feels like lagg now.
【ダラ】and Standard 60hz ultra lag, or what?
Christian Wurm yes, feels like your watching a slideshow. But it depends of you. A friend of mine cannot make the difference.
I own a 144hz display. 60hz is smooth too but not so fast. And yea the difference especially in gaming is huge. But 60hz is not laggy
Thank you, this video has cleared my mind on what to add on my existing build :) Thank you, keep up the good work bro!
Although CS:GO pros use 16:9 monitors most of them still use a 4:3 aspect ratio in-game.
bad fallen pro player from brazil use 4:3 aspect he plays a lot
21:9 is horrible for cs, have been playing for 6+ years, with a couple of weeks on a 21:9, i hated it. Way to wide and just unusable for competitive
yeah, I recently got an ultrawide and I find it kind of weird I might switch back to 16:9 and play with black bars
@@cavyq dude same I loved my Alienware ultrawide it was so sexy but for games like fortnite (go ahead make fun of me lol) I felt like I cant play as good as my asus pg279q monitor. but games like shadow of war and shadow of tomb raider ultrawide is dope
@@jw3384 why ultrawide is bad for fortnite?
Thank you, this will be the video i show my friends in order to try to sway them to join the Ultra-wide master race.
If only Asus or Acer would effing release their new ultrawides that are suppose to have a 200Hz refresh rate
I have 200hz Acer ultrawide
@@GrayFox370 what monitor would you recommend then?
Anybody watching this today, Overwatch supports 21:9 now and extends fov, tested by standing still and swapping settings 👍
U guys playing on 21:9 while I'm still using 4:3
I know how you feel. It has been about two month since I got 16:9 monitor. Before that I used 5:4.
@I'm Super Fat I actually have a 16:9 monitor but play csgo on 4:3 stretched 😅😅
@MEanME well so are u
Buy the 5K LG Ultrawide, that looks great
I like 21:9 but often the loss of vertical pixels can be disconcerting.
16:9 should never have been a thing. The transition should have been directly to 21:9.
Naw. The downside of larger monitors is that it takes longer for your eyeballs to travel from one part of a screen to another. But when we are talking movies, why not, or working on a monitor: sure! Games, it depends...
@@Sc0pee nah your eyeballs get used to whats important information and whats not pretty quickly.
I don't have the Alienware. I have the Acer Predator Ultrawide. I do not find photo editing to be bad on an Ultrawide.
Low Money but interested in 21:9: Get 21:9 with 60Hz or 75Hz
More money and still interested: 21:9 +144Hz or more
Low Money and not interested: 144Hz FHD
_Poor like me: Nothing. xD_
It’s crazy how far we have come in 2 years.
its so perfect holy shit. I love it
Happy that he mentioned the witcher 3 that's the only reason why I'm getting a ultra wide screen
Every Ultrawide video should be in ultrawide ratio on youtube. Come on people!
Thank you someone said it
@@andrewz3854 actually I was looking for a video exactly like this to see how thick the bars would be displaying 21:9 content on a 16:9 screen. I do see what you mean though.
I simply connected 16:9 4K TV , made 21:9 custom resolutions , turn off upscaling and it looks incredible.
I can´t see the Video in Fullscreen on my 21:9 Monitor.
very informative video! you deserve much more subs!!
Already have an ultra wide lol why am I watching
Nic Nolan please share your gaming experience? ?
And what monitor do you have ?
I have the 35'' AOC Agon 100hz 3440x1440 screen, and it's great.
Unfortunately, you will have black bars on the sides if you're going to watch videos/movies on some websites, but you can download an ultrawide extension to stretch the videos so it fits your screen.
thank
I have an LG 34UC79G-B. Its pretty amazing even if its free sync with my 1070. it blows my last monitor, a standard Asus 24" 60hz 1080 screen out of this world! i was at a point to where no matter what part i upgraded on my PC it would still be bottlenecked by the monitor. I got it a year ago during Neweggs black November deals for $449. Haven't seen it that low since I got it.

I've got an ultrawide monitor and it's punishing my fps in msfs, but I just can't go back to 16:9, it looks so... strange
I almost wasted my money on one of these until I realized I almost never even use the edges of the screen on games. So I bought a 4k 144hz instead I'm really happy btw you don't have to run @4k 1440 & 1600 looks great scaled but a GPU will end up coming out that can push it

Wow great video man! Everything covered. I am currently playing on 144hz gsync TN 16:9, gonna upgrade to the Alienware AW3418DW. I already played on 21:9 75hz but it felt way to slow, so I sent it back.

32" 1440p (16:9) is much more immersive than 34" 1440p (21:9). I owned 2 different 34" monitors, but after they both broke, I got a 32" 1440p G-Sync LG monitor and love it WAY more than I ever loved my 34"s.

NutPeak - I don't play competitively lol 😁
The thing about csgo is that with the way you move and look around the map you always have the center of your screen being the leading edge. Peripheral vision in csgo isnt really that important because of this, like alot of pros even use 4:3 stretched to sacrifice peripheral vision for wider player models that are easier to spot and aim on. The one big advantage i could see ultra wide and super ultra wide having is for stretching either a 4:3 or 16:9 ratio all to way to 21:9 or wider to have a really stretched out player models for easier aiming. Maybe you should do a short video or something like that exploring stretched aspect ratios for csgo and other competitive shooters and if getting a ultra wide for that reason is worth it or practical.
great video.. love your channel. on the come up! i really wanna try a ultra wide monitor. just need to save up a bit
