Medvedev served better and played his attacking consistent style like he did when he won USO and made those runs in AO. Alcaraz couldn’t match Medvedev’s constant consistency and ended up feeling pressured to do more and thus making more errors.
As much as I love Alcaraz vs Djokovic, I have been waiting for Djokovic vs Medvedev at a major for a very long time. This rivalry is due a big slam match after two lopsided finals in 2021.
I was thinking the same. We’re due for a competitive 5-setter between the two. AO21 Djokovic dominated, USO21 Medvedev dominated. Nadal and Medvedev had those two epics at USO 2019 and AO2022 where I thought both played fantastic; hopefully we could see something similar here.
Still hoping for a Meddy win today, in 4-5 sets.

Excellent point! Even though it's to be expected from the fans, the comment sections were replete with "experts" commenting "Daniil doesn't stand a chance" and "Alcaraz in 3"🙄. How quickly people forget!
The matches are played for a reason. And, when the match involves two top 10 players- nothing is guaranteed! Some nights top guys can either play lights-out or flat. Daniil plays like this again on Sunday, he's hoisting the trophy!

Favorites are given those titles for a reason. Medvedev, unlike Zverev, knew that that title is earned by players’ performances leading up to a major, which Daniil’s had been less than spectacular. Unlike Zverev, who expected to be a part of the conversation just because, Daniil knew why he wasn’t being talked about and wanted his tennis to do the talking, which he achieved today. It’s actually much easier to play when you’re going under the radar. When you’re a favorite, you play with all the pressure on your shoulders. Daniil knew the advantages of this, same like in 2021, and hence didn’t complain. Zverev should take notes. Zverev never complained when he used to be a part of the favorites conversation.

This was a combination of a few things. 1. This was the highest level Meddy has played since the 2021 US Open tournament. It was his best serving match and probably his best ground stroke match I’ve ever seen. 2. Carlos wasn’t playing at a high level from set 2 on. He was spraying forehand error everywhere and even a few backhand errors. Abandoned his drop shot and couldn’t execute some of his usual shots. 3. The lack of adjustments made by Carlos and especially Juan Carlos Ferraro was astonishing. Clifford Drysdale rightly pointed out Medvedev knew where Alcaraz was serving all night. He would take a full step to his right every time waiting for the ball on his forehand. Carlos made no adjustments to Medvedev being a wall from the baseline or the return. That was the match. Good for Meddy. Totally deserved it.
Alcaraz wasnt playing at high level on 3rd set?
I think Alcaraz played fine in the 3rd and even much of the 4th set, but a few too many unforced errors and he didn’t execute the drop shot well. In fact, I don’t think he’s executed particularly well on the drop shot since Wimbledon.

as a alcaraz fan who watches every match of him i was the most surprised by his errors in clutch moments and his errors in longer rallies .. thats unusual for him congrats to danil he played an unreal match deserved winner 👏👏
@stepdownl4901 Ostapenko did the same thing against Iga in R4. Shelton did the same thing against Tiafoe in QF. Meddie did it to Alcatraz in the SF. Take away time, make them feel rushed, disrupt their rhythm and scare them with power, so they get impatient and try to muscle the ball through. This draws the error and break up those long rallies so they can’t show off.
Remember when Alexander Zverev boasted after his match/win against Daniil Medvedev at Cinci, how Carlos Alcaraz’s ‘game plan’ helped him beat Medvedev. I found it a bit disrespectful from both players, Zverev/Alcaraz. Just my opinion.

Good point, Medvedev wasn't cold or dismissive to Alcaraz after their match but Carlos needs to be a little more guarded. I know he is a straight shooter but a little guile is necessary. As much as I love Carlos game and who he is as a person

Yes no one is invincible. People thought Federer was invincible and God-like, but was brought down to earth first by Nadal and then by Novak and he ended up having a negative record against both of them, especially in grand slams which matter the most.

Alcaraz was shanking his forehand the entire match. So if his forehand is off, does he have the shot tolerance to win - maybe not.
Whenever there's a big height advantage, the taller player usually overpowers the shorter - that happened regarding the serve. But meds got the best of both worlds, because his defense was better than Alcaraz's, and Med's didn't force the offense. It might be a more natural thing for Alcaraz to play more defensively - the guy is ultra aggresive tho - I don't know if that can be changed
Agreed. Alcaraz needs to tame his power and pick his spots a little better, but yeah, mainly all those shanks, he missed a lot of easy-for-him shots from the baseline and on the return, which if he had converted any of those break chances could have made it a very different match. Like he wasn't seeing the ball as well or something today

Almost everyone picking Alcaraz vs Novak for the final!🤣 Daniil sure wrecked that party. People forget how good he can be on hardcourts. Took Alcaraz's best shot and still closed the deal. Virtually nobody picked him in '21 against Novak, and most will go against him Sunday. If he plays like he did tonight- he will win! We'll see!
Djokovic is not Alcaraz, Medvedev can play whatever he wants, if Djokovic is at his best he is chrushing him in straight sets. This is not 2021 and a Calendar Year Grand Slam posibility and exausted Djokovic from the olympics. This Djokovic is way more powerful than that. It could be another AO 2021.

People forgot how good Daniil is on a hardcourt, because Carlos wrecked him in the Indian Wells final, and he has won nothing leading into the US Open. Medvedev, however, upped the ante and played the most aggressive I’ve ever seen him play. He truly played like someone who didn’t have anything to lose. However, as good as Medvedev was, Carlos made too many errors, which probably isn’t going to be the case with Djokovic. In 2021, Novak played a 4hr semi, shush wasn’t the case today, and he also had a long, grueling summer, which hasn’t been the case this year. Though there is no pressure of the calendar-year grand slam, there will be pressure for 24, while there’s no pressure on Medvedev again. However, Djokovic will come in prepared and ready for revenge. Who was the last player to beat Djokovic twice in a row at majors anyway?

Yes, I think Medvedev's extra pressure - hitting the ball harder, to be frank, and with less margin - is what persuaded Alcaraz to play more aggressively (and thus hit more UEs). Master class from Medvedev on increasing the heat/risk, rising in intensity and focus for the occasion, and changing his own natural game style in order to beat another top player.
And I agree that I think it's been a while (I think two years, pre-AO vs Nadal) since we saw this kind of play from Daniil. Hope he sticks with it.

That was vintage Medvedev which had gone away since he let that Australian Open final slip out of his hands. It's so good to see him back to his old form again after almost 2 years!
He was destroying Nadal, was more dominating than this match vs Alcaraz , but somehow Nadal turned the tables on, some clutch points by Nadal in the third and fourth that Alcaraz just didn’t do and that the weather at Melbourne was making Medvedev tired made the difference, I even think that if Melbourne had a roof Medvedev would have won.
Everybody has been talking about Alcaraz and Đoković this season, but Medvedev in top form can match anybody. He has had a great season overall and deserves to win another grand slam. Novak will have his hands full in the final.

Alcaraz was overconfident thinking he was gonna make the final and hence didn't prepare adequately for this match. Him and his team was talking about beating Novak in the final before he'd even got there!! Glad he got humbled.
Medvedev finally figured that he should be aggressive against the aggressor. He did not let Alcaraz play his game. Made him doubt his shots, whether to go for a winner, stay in the rally or go to the net. Whoever controls the game wins it, even if the statistics may say otherwise. For Alcaraz, i think he is experiencing this kind of game against him for the first time. He should get used to this cause others will follow.
He said this about Djokovic too, who plays a different kind of attacking tennis which is deceptively powerful but just as effective.

I had thought it would be a easy 3 setter for Carlos. Meddy neutralized his wide serves well, covered the drops well and kept his balls deep. Medy ensured that Carlos pinned on the baseline. Once he ensured that, it was pretty one sided.
Gill, you said that it’s ridiculous that people talk about Alcaraz relying too much on Ferrero’s coaching throughout the match. However, today, Brad Gilbert, who was sitting courtside, pointed out on ESPN that Ferrero was giving Alacaraz hand signals on where to serve, even when Carlos was on the other side, which is illegal. It’s absurd for the no.1 player in the world to constantly rely on being coached for basic strategies, instead of problem solving on his own, and only looking to his box every now and then for suggestions. Maybe learning how to look within himself for answers might also give him more confidence in such situations going forward, instead of needing to be told what to do at every point. That just can’t be sustainable long term.

17:28 I literally was thinking the same thing when I watched that point with them grunting and hitting the ball hard back and forth. Medvedev got Alcaraz to go for the macho rally, and in the end Alcaraz went for too much while Medvedev kept being patient and waiting for him to try more. He got baited!
Let's go! You write your own (counter)narrative! The match was so good. Much better than the Djokovic / Shelton SF. Alcaraz internalized the hype, the media commentary, the gassing up from his entourage and took his eye off the ball in terms of covering his weaknesses. Meddie was a beast! This is why we focus on serve. Slices, drop shots, lobs are defensive, crafty shots. Nothing can beat a beastly serve and forehand. Alcaraz wasn't good enough in either department. Meddie still stands too far back and doesn't anticipate the volleys and drop shots enough. Meddie knew to go to Alcaraz's forehand. When he tried to go to Alcaraz's backhand, that's when he ran into trouble. Alcaraz got into trouble by trying to be flashy and crafty while Meddie knew to hit the ball and play real tennis.

Alcaraz was only “sluggish” because of stiff opposition. A player always looks sharp and on point when the opposition is relatively weak.
Well played by Medvedev. As a fan of Alcaraz, I couldn’t even be mad at the outcome. Medvedev showed us that there’s still a ton of strength in his game: return the ball deep, move extremely well, don’t miss, serve bombs. Fact is, there’s not much you can do about that. Alcaraz’s rally tolerance maybe wasn’t what I hoped it would be, but he would’ve needed a Nadal-type of consistent baseline offense to win this. Extremely entertaining match, incredible tennis, and I think Djokovic is in for a tough match Sunday if Medvedev keeps playing like this. I see 2021 Medvedev right now. Final could go either way; Djokovic’s net game looks fantastic, but it wasn’t enough for Carlos, so maybe Medvedev can withstand Djokovic’s net game too.

Alcaraz had a mental advantage over the whole tour post Wimbledon. Now with North American Hard court swing, he has lost that aura. Many players can smell his blood. Djokovic/Sinner/Tommy/Sinner/Medvedev to name a few. It is easy to chase but when you are at the top and being chased, it's not easy. Going to the top of the mountain is only the first part. You have to sustain it. Good for tennis. Djokovic/Sinner/Alcaraz/Medvedev make up for interesting and intense rivalries.

@@ProMikus quite possibly but I’m casting mind back a bit to some key match ups and he did beat Novak here in final before plus he seems to have better traction against him at places like Australia whereas in Australia as an example where nadal isn’t always firing I’ve seen him spank Med a couple times. As a Medvedev fan, I find it funny how the commentators were praising Alcaraz the entire match. Ok we know he is amazing but Medvedev is too. We are talking about a guy who beat Djokovic in a us final and nearly beat Nadal twice. I am so glad for this result. Many experts are sorry for dismissing him before the match. And Med was correct to not abandon his trademark court positioning. He is a joy to watch.
The summary of all these analyses is that it’s difficult to execute your game when you have a stiff opposition. Alcaraz was able to execute his game in his last two matches but just couldn’t do so against Danil. It’s for a reason.
Alcaraz failed to capitalize on the few moments where there was 🩸 in the water, proverbially speaking. He is used to his physicality wearing people down mentally but Medvedev was rock solid from a mental perspective in this match. However, there were still moments where I believe if Alcaraz had won certain points, this match goes a completely different way, and he failed to see in real time these opportunities that were handed to him that he didn’t take advantage of.
Danil brought the HEAT and kept bringin; it! WOW!!! Danil is BACK in a big way having climbed the Carlitos mountaintop. The final with Nole & Meddy could be EPIC! Thanx Gill! Best, Milan

He proved the opposite today to so many people who underestimated Daniil and his ability to withstand the best players on tours unlike a lot of other guys of his generation getting demolished by Carlos and Novak easily.

Most interesting point for me was Meddy going for it on 2nd serves.
He took the DFs in stride and kept pushing it, because he knows if he’s serving a poor 2nd serve, there is no way to win vs Alcaraz. He preferred double faulting and keeping the % missed serves instead of making more serves that are free points to Carlos.
In the long run, Carlos does not get the confidence from those easy winners, and Meddy keeps Carlos guessing on 2nd serve, which I think was the key.

This match really made me realize how much I missed watching Medvedev at his best vs a super aggressive baseliner on a hard court. Medvedev being 20 feet behind the baseline, getting to everything as the other guy clubs forehands all over the place. Nadal and Thiem vs Medvedev matches were always so much fun. I hope Alcaraz and Medvedev play more hard court matches, although it seems Alcaraz will still own him on clay, grass, and slow hard courts from what we’ve seen.
What sprung to me was meddy's serve is back. Has been awful in many matches this season. Meddy is back in the big big time.

@@asadmohammed9982 Alcaraz & Djokovic aren't as lethal with their serves as Meddie. They survive by being aggressive returners, but take away the defensive tricks and they have to work harder to keep up. Meddie served well against Ruby and that's when I suspected he could do well against two players who have seen their serves underperform. I think it's mentally harder for Meddie to play his friend Ruby than it is to play Alcaraz or Djokovic, the golden boys of tennis.
@@got2bjoshMedvedev didn’t serve well against Rublev at all. He got broken 5 times in that match. He just made 55% first serve. Most importantly his second serve was worse all tournament long.
It was his return that was extraordinary and that won him matches.
Today was the anomaly. He served amazing today. I hope he continues serving well even against Novak.

Very glad that Meddy won. I like Carlos's game a lot and he's been fantastic but he hardly had any challenge except Novak. Good Meddy stepped up. More the challenge, more the fun for us fans.

Gill always underestimate med and zverev. He said they are faulty players. But in reality meds hard court numbers prove he is one of the greats on hard court and zverev at his best can best anyone. In today's match, definitely Med have played better tennis. Specially his power serve. Carlos is a new sensation in Tennis World. He needs some time for his maturity. He has loses his rhythm today. He already clinched some grand slam against the senior players. Good luck for him.
I think one thing you missed mentioning is meddy's attacking tennis. He hasnt really brought it out all open but he did in this match in the first two sets. Reminds me of his 2021 usopen style
The first two games on Daniil’s game went to dues was because Daniil double faulted 4/5 damn times when serving, not because Carlos was playing successfully exploiting the ‘weak’ second serve of Daniil

Great analysis as usual. One additional thing I think Medvedev often does well, and certainly did well in this match, is anticipate his opponent's next shot, or at least the direction of the next shot. I thought Medvedev perhaps had just a little less trouble with the power of Alcaraz because, as you say, he kept Alcaraz on the run with his well directed baseline shots cross court and down the line, but also because he gave himself slightly more time to set up those baseline shots by anticipating so well and so consistently where his opponent was going to hit the ball next. He was reading Alcaraz pretty well in this match, I thought.
Gill, didn't you think the court was playing much faster and slicker than normal under the roof today? To my eyes, it was night and day compared to Alcaraz's match against Zverev. It looked unbelievably slick, the ball wasn't losing pace off the surface, nor was it taking a lot of spin. I don't think Alcaraz was ready for these sorts of conditions, and Medvedev obviously loves them. Wimbledon played much slower compared to the match today, which is surprising because the US Open has been slow this year, but it seems like it was the balls, and without the elements, the balls were flying and Alcaraz was really really rushed.
For the men's SF, they closed the roof and ran the AC because everyone was complaining about the heat and humidity over the past few days. It worked for Djokovic and Meddie's game.

Spin won't be effective in night matches but conditions will be slower too, so they have to figure out what makes sense for Carlos game both during the day and night matches

@@colethomas903 Carlos arguably has the worst serve in the top 10. That's why he compensates with a bunch of crafty, defensive shots that wow the crowd. Meddie showed that you can't win on drop shots, volleys, and lobs alone. Sometimes, the best and most effective way to win is to make sure the serve, forehand, and backhand are firing on all cylinders.
The reasons are clear for anyone who saw the match 1. Med to his credit was playing at a very high level 2. Carlos level really dipped and his drop shots were weak and eminently attackable and 3. This continues to be Carlos’ biggest weakness that he DOES NOT HAVE a powerful 1st serve he can rely on to get him out of trouble (unlike say Fed at his peak who when he was in trouble could escape with just 4 aces ordered on tap) whereas 4. Med’s serve throughout was SUPERB (forget the last two double faults)
The way Carlos plays he relies on his huge talent and power which may help him most of the time now that he is young and ascending BUT power and agility and touch can fade with time so he needs a solid fallback routine to develop as a muscle memory he can rely on during lean times.
The textbook example was Novak in the Cincinnati final when he was almost ready to drop dead due to heatstroke when he conserved all his energies and moves and focused on outlasting Carlos and waiting for sunset and the dip in Carlos’ form and then he struck back - THAT was a PlanB Master Class
So the good news here is given the raw talent and power and freshness Carlos brings to the game he still has lots of room left to learn and grow and provided he takes care of his health and avoids the burnout route, he is guaranteed to be among the greatest in a few years time
You have established that whether a tactic or a part of the game is “fine” depends on if they cost you key games (like getting broken) when you talk about Medvedev’s second serve “they are fine because they did not cost him key games” something like that. But isn’t it double standard when you do not acknowledge that standing back to return is also fine despite the fact that he lost a large percentage of points to s and v, which should not have mattered based on your previous metrics as long as they do not cost you/ they win you key games, in this case it helped him break serve. So it is not about the percentage but about if they take place (contribute to winning or losing key games) in key games
Hi Gill, I think you missed one of the main facts about Alcaraz losing the match....Closed roof. That is the one and only field where Alcaraz has not proven himself yet, and Medvedev is suited to such conditions. In any case, excellent observation of the match as always.👍

Concened about Alcaraz'z tennis IQ after this match. To be fair, he also looked out of form, so difficult to judge. Meddy played great and showed lots of mental discipline.

I turned off the match after the first set. Carlos seemed to be trying to hit winners on every shot and it was painful to watch him miss so many returns. Was hoping he would make adjustments but he seemed really confused. It was just not his day. But hey losses are learning moments. And he’s still a kid… it would be weird if he won all his matches. Looking forward to seeing him grow and develop his game mentally to the next level. ❤

I thought Alcaraz's serve and volley alone can help him win service games. However, Alcaraz is visibly hesitant to serve and volley starting from the second set. That tells you how good Meddy's return is.

Story of the match: Medvedev's consistent pressure dulled down Alcaraz's weapons to a nub. This is going to be Alcaraz's Achilles heel even as he matures. The more one depends on their 'powerful' weapons, the less they'll know what to do when the weapons aren't working as expected.

I never saw this comming. Definitelly not. I dont like anything about Medvedev, but he deserved to with this one, particulary because of that first 2 sets, that was a monster level performance. Congrats to him. Alcaraz should have counted his chickens when they hatched, definitelly underestimated Medvedev, he was out after the first set, still has a lot to learn. For example, how to play when things for wrong in his strategy. Djokovic will have his chance for a rematch to Medvedev, perhaps fitting. Also a very good final. Cant wait.
I'm not that surprised for the very simple reason Alcaraz didn't have any bite on his serve , even for much of the zverev match. The USO surface speed and bounce also suits Medvedev as much as it suits Alcaraz game. And yes, it has the potential to be a fantastic final. May the best player win
Great match, saw all of it! Alcaraz should've served&volleyed most points in the second set, because even if Alcaraz would drop to winning only 70% of those points it would've been a far more winning plan than baseline attack and counterattack.

Med was virtually unplayable, but this match was very close. Carlito had lots of chances and couldn’t execute. Biggest surprise for me was Med returning like a God from the bleachers. Gil is right, it was about execution in that match.

Alcaraz feet were not moving by his standards. One of the biggest barometer is how they react following their drop shot, are they covering the court or ball watching? At times Alcaraz was ball watching. Daniil did play a perfect match though. His court coverage was out of this world 🌍

Alcaraz shoudnt have played toronto masters coming off wimbledon ...he needed more time to rest his mind and asimulate all that he had done in wimbledon..after cincci he was drained and upto the semi of the us open he was not pushed...so apart frm medvedev who raised his game ,mentally alcaraz had lost patience ,for me because partially he was mentally drained and I think that is where Juan Carlos made a mistake with his pupil..even he was looking tired and stressed..too much tennis on the north american circuit special after wimbledon..imagine all the commitments as 20 year old he had to deal with,,,NO TIME TO DECOMPRESS..the JOKO missed Toronto on purpose.

Alcaraz is a good player , a very talented player but he is way to overhyped. People are already talking about him in the same category with Nole, Federer and Nadal. How about we will have the conversation on how great Alcaraz is in about 10-15 years from now on and in another 20 SLAMS won (assuming he will be able to do win them) and let him do some proving meanwhile ?

@@colethomas903 Don't get me wrong, Alcaraz defo has the potential to be right there with the big 3. But we all know that doing that a long period of time like 12-15 years like the big 3 did its the true test of greatness. There were many with big potential that won GS at early ages but they failed to stay consistent for a long period of time. Boris Becker is a good example for this.
That's why I'm saying that Carlos Alcaraz need to do a lot of proving for a long period of time to be included in the same conversation with Djokovic, Nadal and Federer.
