- Gill Gross recaps an eventful Quarterfinal Friday in Toronto, which saw top-seed Carlos Alcaraz lose to Tommy Paul and two-seed Daniil Medvedev lose to Alex de Minaur. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina continued his red-hot run with a decisive win over Mackie McDonald. And in the nightcap, now-title-favorite Jannik Sinner defeated Gael Monfils. The semifinals are Sinner vs. Paul and De Minaur vs. Davidovich Fokina.

I feel like this was important for Alcaraz to lose when he is not playing good and not just get lucky and win the tournament because he needs to remember that he can't be too complacent even after winning a big tournament
Love this comment. Very true
He had zero feel on his forehand, and his offensive arsenal just wasn’t clicking together. Paul defended beautifully and hit his forehand really well, but Alcaraz should be able to dismantle his defense through better offense imo. Alcaraz’s offense is unmatched. I agree, the loss isn’t that bad. Gives him a few days to prep for Cincinnati and improve to peak at the US Open. I do wish we got to see Alcaraz/Sinner though.
@@alex0ut-of-magic890 😆 you bitter Djokonuts are too easy to spot. I know you all are still hurting
@@SJ-di5zulets wait for the US OPEN to see that matchup.
Hopefully in the FINAL?
He should've skipped this tournament, he seemed a bit tired. He was MUCH better on grass. But heh even the best have to lose. I dont see Paul wining a lot of GS tho. Hes good but again, Carlos just didnt play well.....
I have confidence in Sinner to fuck this up somehow.
Oh for sure 50/50 he loses to Paul
Paul had match points in both their previous meetings. He could win this
Sinner rocks!
i’m back here eight months later and can’t help but note how your comment aged like sour milk
I knew Alcaraz was going to lose either to Paul or Sinner.
His level just wasn't good enough.
Barely escaped Hurzacz and Ben.
I think he'll come all guns blazing in US Open though.
Agreed, he was inconsistent at this time last year too but he put it together and won USO
Jet-lag?
Maybe you're right about Monfils, I never thought about it that way, but it kinda makes sense: he'd be a bit like a kid, playing tennis because he just _loves_ a contest, meaning that winning maybe is not the be-all and end-all for him, he just wants to measure his forehand with the other guy's forehand etc etc, he just wants to *play* and have fun?... (if that's the case, good for him)
I think ADF is going to continue to surprise people and defy expectations 🏆
Yes, I was curious about Gill's take. If true, I wonder if Gaël even aware of it?
Alcaraz already saving up for GS at the age of 20. He definitely learnt a thing or two frim the Big 3. Hooefully he will do the impossible, CYGS.
In my defense, I didn't say what kind of expectations... 🙄
Alcaraz never seemed so frustrated
His young in that age is normal that have oscillation look for all top player and all of them up to 21 age have oscillation
2022 Quarters US OPEN against Sinner was even worse
Most players are pretty hot-headed at age 20, especially with the pressure Alcaraz has at all times. It makes sense. Nadal is really the only player I can think of that was super composed at age 19/20, but he’s a special case and has always been extremely composed.
He is no saint & he does everything but mainstream media will say he is human blah blah
He’s had moments of frustration like this, Norrie last year comes to mind as well as Zverev at RG. In most of those matches he ends up losing. Frustration works for some people but apparently not for him
Do you think ADF might have a good chance against Sinner (should they make the final) - as he's least likely to fall into the Monfil' trap of playing to Jannik's strengths.
Big question with Alejandro is whether he could maintain focus and consistency for long enough.
Again, predictions were through the drain in Canada.
Nobody can get them right.
If sinner loses I’m gonna turn into a carrot
Tommy was playing fascinating first time watch him that good i think.
Wonder if its the strings? - the different reactions about the balls
De Minaur uses a Wilson 99 with Luxilon 4G
Meddy uses Technifibre Dynacore 305 with Technifibre Razor Core Soft strings
Demon uses a hybrid setup with luxilon 4g and gut. Strung at 48 pounds
I think Alex has made substantial improvements in his offensive tennis. He has great feel at the net and is coming up with more clutch serves. If he were just a road runner he wouldn’t go this deep
Nice wrap up! Thx! 👍🙂
I'm italian and tonight I woke just in time to watch Sinner's match, so I didn't have the possibility to watch Paul. To the ones who watched Alcaraz vs Paul: do you think that Paul won because he is in form or because Alcaraz wasn't at his best?
Both. But wouldn't be surprised if Paul wins it. He was very good. (I gave up watching live after Alcaraz won the second set thinking he was going to run away with it, but when I saw Paul won, I watched the 3rd set on TC+. Paul was just very, very good. Never got flustered. Kept his cool, and just played. He ran Alcaraz around the court.)
Paul had confidence with a solid strategy and Alcaraz was living on borrowed time with his scratchy form all week
I think both
It was a deja vu this week from Alcaraz. He was playing like Alcaraz 22 version, inconsistent, lots of errors, bad serve and backhand. Also bad mentality, physical and behaviour.
Paul was impressive, very focused, not errors, great serve and return, tactically perfect match. And great FH, like Gill said.
At his best nobody can beat Alacaraz currently, including Djokovic
I think Tommy is a relatively tough matchup for Alcaraz, but Carlos has absolutely threw this one away. He was awful and missed non stop, mainly on his FH. Alcaraz lost this one more than Paul won it
Feel like for a player with a peak as high as Carlos to lose to a player like Tommy it needs to be both, Carlos needs to be playing poorly AND Tommy needs to be playing well, I thought that's more what happened
Great work, Gill
Wow the camera and the setting is extraordinary! Gill you are upping the game ❤
Fascinating day!
Tommy Paul is the true Alcaraz kryptonite
He defeats all of the Spaniards
Lots of players are alcaraz kriptonite
Wait for a couple of matches at grand slams or a court that is not toronto. All the favs were tired and out of form. Paul will lose to alcaraz next time, so chill
@@Andres-qm1xxAren’t you the clown that said Djokovic was gonna beat Alcaraz 6-0 6-0 on grass? Why haven’t you just given up already?
Remind me Andres who won Wimbledon again? I forget.
@@aiylacarson a 20 yo kid barely against an injured 37 yo GOAT
Gotta love unexpected semifinals! Great tennis from all 4. Rooting for ADF vs Paul in a final!
Having seen sinner pretty handily beat Paul who I think was the tougher matchup for him than DeMinaur I am once again beginning to believe and am prepared to be disappointed :)
LETS FUCKIN GOOOOOO
I’d like to see a Sinner vs ADF final.
n either of them win the title I'll be very glad 😁🤩
Speaking of running cross court forehands, the Williams sisters were nasty with that shot.
Thx!
Let's go Jannik 👏🎾❤️
Please do a M1000 preview for Cincy before the event begins. I very much enjoy your insights. Thanks! - Ludwig Von Schwonz
It seems these August Masters 1000 are a bit of a challenge for Alcaraz in his young career
Sinner v De Mineur final I think
That Lamborghini vs Lexus metaphor is awesome!
Meddy looked casual in the extreme. Wonder why?
But coming back twice from 2-5 down in one set is hardly a 'steal'. The guy fought like the Demon he is and won it back.
One way it's a blessing in disguise
for Alcaraz he can get enough rest
for upcoming tournament and U.s.o
Also have time to improve his
game.
The draw gods have been extremely generous to sinner lately he better take advantage
per my earlier post, I said alcaraz will not be the champion in this roger cup, this is my prediction after looked at the draw. He was lucky to win hurkarz in 2nd round, every match in this rogers cup, he is so desperate to fight till the last point in 3 sets match!
Sinner impressed me against Monfils. Both of them were whacking the ball. wow. I take Sinner over Paul..
Hope to final sinner_De minaur🎾🎾
Def a lot of pressure for Sinner. A lot of eyes on him. If he can't handle it,..........
Gil, In your opinion who has the best running forehand in the ATP?
Before recently Rafa was the king of that shot
Deadass almost worse to deal with on clay than his standing forehand
Great analysis again Gill! Alcaraz was poor all week and he seemed very frustrated with himself agree it was mental exhaustion. Also think as a big fan of Carlitos its probably a good thing to lose here and he can take some pressure off himself now and get ready for Cincy/USO. Tommy was fantastic btw, really like his game! Was really impressed with ADM against Meddy, and agree Meddy's 2nd serve really bad this match. I have a feeling Sinner won't handle the pressure , think he need ADF not ADM in the final if he is going to win it!
He owns De Minaur. 4-0 H2H
Davidovich The Fok will win it
Sinner is going to win
Tommy Paul deserves recognition. Sinner beat Monfils, and Monfils has not been playing well for a long time. Sinner was lucky and got an easy draw.
I cant tell if some people are trolling in the comments or whether they are genuinely that thick 😂 Teaches me right for expecting anything else in a yt comment section to be fair.
Hair looks great Gill
interesting how 3 of the fastest guy on the tour are in these semi-finals. Coincedence or...?
Canada is a slow court. If you are fast then you can get to every ball.
Grinders win on slow courts
I mean Alcaraz is probably the fastest guy on tour, but yeah point still taken with ADF, ADM and Paul.
Gill why don't you rate Tommy Paul! 🤔
Happy for Paul! Glad that someone new is going to win this tourney, got to root for Jannik but if anyone other than De Minaur wins i’m happy
Lol why do you hate De Minaur so much
@@thugzclub4070 idk it’s an irrational hate, i can’t help it
@@thugzclub4070 also less ‘hate’ more a mild dislike
@@duncan3932His ears perhaps? 😅
This has to be Sinner's to win now. If he doesn't, I doubt he'll ever win a masters.
If Sinner does not win, he probably won’t win a big title in the next two years. If that came true, he won’t win more than one slam.
I think we also can’t ignore the decline of Medvedev’s serve. I think this will seriously affect his ability to win a slam in the future if he can’t get it consistently as good as it was from 2019-21. Medvedev’s serve feels like his only elite source of offense. Without it firing away, how is Medvedev supposed to beat someone like De Minaur or Alcaraz, who can get to every ball he hits off the ground? The match will always be on their rackets.
I do remember Medvedev’s serving stats were pretty good at Wimbledon though, and I don’t know the exact stats, so maybe this isn’t a real long-term issue. But it’s something to keep an eye on and contributed to his struggles in 2022. If he doesn’t get his serve back in full force, I think we will have seen Medvedev’s peak already pass by. Medvedev used to be a top 10 server in the world, but nowadays, his first serve doesn’t have the same pop it used to and his second serve is actually below average.
Still, no reason to overreact. We’ve seen a lot of upsets and none of the top players have really played their best so far outside Sinner. Medvedev, Rune, Tsitsipas, Rublev, Zverev, Fritz all put up very disappointing performances on their way out. Alcaraz, Tiafoe, and Ruud were slightly disappointing although both brought a decent level.
So, this De Minaur is much better in-form than the one in AO against Djokovic?
@@rksleung I wouldn’t say that, I just think he liked these balls and conditions better. And that Medvedev put up a lackluster performance.
Happy alcaraz lost . Thank you Paul
I honestly don’t enjoy Sinners style of play
Why ? He looks fabulous.
@@michael8597 I think perhaps because he like many has one way of playing. Hit clean and big but that's it. Trying to hit through opponents and that's it, no change of plans.
@@anshathani1987 Everybody cannot be skillful like Laver, Rosewall or Mcenroe
@@michael8597 I agree, but I think it's a fair criticism, a reason why people like alcaraz is because of his versatile game. Hardly anyone is a all round great player now, mostly players just play behind the baseline and rally.
@@anshathani1987 Alcaraz?? I don't think he is such a versatile player as you imagine him to be. He has however loads of luck as his key arsenal.
sinner's plan A: hit hard and fast
plan B: hit harder and faster
Carlitos was a Target for Tommy...Target syndrome!
Amazingly, in his long career, Monfils has developed zero strategic sense. He defaults to being a baseline ball-shagger with flashes of forehand. Still, very impressive tournament from him.
Zelig Monfils?
Sinner got an easy draw again
Your initial prediction : Alcaraz beat Meddy is all wrong. Lousy…lousy prediction
How is he great when he's won nothing 😮
Frust
Sasha you bumbling buffoon you can’t even spell first right!!!1!!!
Meddy keeps me amused. But what an indictment- he can't run forwards and finish at the net.
What are todays (and yesterdays) coaches teaching their players?
How can you talk about a player as great or elite or Top10 if they cannot do well absolutely everything in the game.
Not saying everything = equal level, or we wouldnt have great talents or exceptional skills, but the basics: all the serves, all the volleys, bh slice and all the spins, fhs of all colours, smash, dropshots and every part of the court.
That is the *starting* point.
Just shaking my head with frustration and disappointment. These guys do not keep me entertained!!
Too much talk
"Slug it out behind the baseline."
Yawn.
Why do ppl like Sinner?
What's he got that is elite or exemplary or even just interesting?
How is this a 'great player' ?
From when has being entertaining become the gauge of playing great tennis?
Sinner isn't great yet
Neither carlos and also overrated
define great
@@Andres-qm1xxCarlos is #1 and has won multiple slams and atp 1000 😂
Carlos played outside top 100 level this tourney. Horrific.
As i said many times, he is extremely overrated, losing today to an unknown player (Tomas Paul which i frankly didnt even know his existence until today).
I dont think Carlos will recover his previous level after this lose.
Happened to Thiem. Zverev and now Carlos. Mark my words

How can he be overrated when he got his rating from winning two grand slam tournaments? What a load of rubbish
Don't worry I just saw you post heaps of comments hating on alcaraz for no reason. It would be like debating a brick wall on this topic
cojido por espana
both Tommy n Paul are quite famous in tennis for some years!😁 i frankly doubt your existence😂 u might be an infected computer 😵🤪
Alcaraz's defeat has proven that his unexpected Wimbledon victory was an aberration which he didn't win, but his opponent lost
@stepdownl4901 Winning by hitting winners is one thing and winning by the blunders of his opponent is another. The first one of impressive and the second one is turning lucky.
😅😅
Obviously, you still salty after that Wimbly final. Such a foking looser you are, lul.
cry djokotard
Agree. Novak was not himself, made brain-dead decisions and was favoring his left leg at crucial times. The wind usually destroys him anyway, and against an opponent like Alcaraz , was too much on the day, imo.
