Great insights from both of you. I was really looking forward to this as soon as the match was over. When we observe the match closely these observations add a dimension to validate your thinking and sometimes provide a different perspective to experience the same moments. This is by far my favorite ones to watch 4 times a year as much enjoyable as the matches itself
I think Novak can still play long rally’s and he displayed very well those even in USO final, he can make combinations of long rally’s and serve Vollys in future and this you will see his dominance on court ! He is such a genius to know what to play when 👍
Gill, not sure if you did this in the past but would love to see your breakdowns (maybe with some film) of some of the all time great matches we have had (Djokovic/Nadal 2012 AO, Federer/Nadal 2009 AO, Djokovic/Federer ATP finals 2012, Murray/Djokovic 2012 AO/ Nadal/Djokovic 2013 RG, etc).
I 100% agree with Steve regarding Ferrero's coaching of Carlos. It's not illegal but the fact that on basically every major point, he's looking for Ferrero to tell him what to do is very unconventional and not the right strategy moving forward imo. Carlos should understand how to play points based on the game score by himself; tennis is an individual sport at the end of the day and part of high level tennis is unpredictability. At the end of the Medvedev match, Carlos felt predictable. Looking at his box once in a while or conversing with them generally is one thing but asking them for tactics for each point seems excessive
Maybe he's not as talented as everyone thinks. It's one thing to blast guys off the court and perform highlight shots. It's another to formulate a deep complex strategy like Djokovic can do. Alcaraz is going to get figured out.
Has Nadal retired and not going to play next year? Not to the best of my knowledge. Yes, Nadal may not win another slam but don't you want him back on the court?
Gosh ! Amazing admission from you - wow! Congrats on that 👏 According to Uncle Toni , Rafa is planning on going to the Australian Open- so you have that to look forward to...
When I watched carlos vs medvedev I thought carlos had figured out a way back into the match by hitting short slices and baiting medvedev to come into the net so carlos would pass or lob him, but he didn’t end up using that strategy too much. Also medvedev started hesitating to go into the net so that prevented that tactic
Let's just not forget what Medvedev himself said: “It's not easy to repeat because against Carlos, I played one of the best matches of my life,” said Medvedev. “Against Novak here two years ago, it's kind of in the same category. It's not that easy to repeat it day in, day out.”
@@jonathanchen1026 Not just his returning, that's kind of missing the point. Medvedev said he played one of the best matches of his life to beat Carlos, then: "It's not that easy to repeat it day in, day out.”

@@timothylee2772 players play the game of their times, not other times. I will say that in the late 90's and very early 2000's more tv viewers were actually tuning into the WTA of all things for some slams, particularly Wimbledon because a lot found "servebot and volley" and 2/3 shot "rallies" all match pretty repetitive.
Good call from Steve. Alcaraz definitely looks at his box every point, i understand that coaching is allowed, but that takes away from enjoying to see how players figure things out on their own
@Gill, do you think Alcaraz will be as successful early in his career, in terms of judgment and tactics, if on-court coaching is not allowed? We know he’s gifted in terms of skills and talent, but what about his judgment and tactics? I think this is the reason why we can not really compare him with the other tennis greats, Djokovic, Federer and Nadal, who got to were they are problem-solving by themselves during a match.
Coaching or not, the problem with Carlos' legacy, if he goes on to create a huge one will be for no fault of his, having had absolutely no good competition. Once Novak retires, he has no challenge form the current roster of players. Yes Meddy beat him at the USO but can he do it consistently? And apart from Meddy who even can put up a decent challenge? The Big 3 had each other and Novak has faced and beaten Meddy's gen and now Carlos' gen.
To me,the only one tennis player who, during playing in the match, is also thinking the way to win each point not just hitting the balls ,as a result, when he played against someone and lost then he was thinking the way he can use it to win back or get revenge in the mext match that is why he has never lost some players again when meeting the next match unlike some ones who lost to some and lost again and again and has never won against one again.

What’s happening with Carlos happens to all of the greats. People are getting used to him and as spontaneous as he appears he has patterns like everybody else. This is throwing him off. This is why Djokovic and Nadal continually reinvented themselves during their careers.
Djokovic's backhand is absolutely stunning it was the key in this confrontation between the two walls and we agreed Novak has more versatility in his game than Danil
Nice Shirt Gill!!!! I truly believe that most people miss the genius of Novak. If You look at the way he has approached his career, it has been an evolution of conquering a physical disability by dieting far beyond the capabilities of the mere mortals. Then he became a perfectionist in his lifestyle to build a cardio fitness that could outlast any other player. And now, he's transitioning his forehand, volley skills and service game in order to successfully defeat his opponents in the ladder stages of his career. The guy is a once in a lifetime soul (not just tennis player) that's able to display the perfect combination of will, desire to gather knowledge and a rare GOD given athletic talent that we may not see again. Everyone who reads this, please cherish the moments we're able to watch this guy play tennis. Otherwise history will tell his story similar to that of his fellow countryman Nicola Tesla. Never appreciated when he was in our mist, but wishing we had access to his genius.
Agree with you completely. We just say he is a machine and end conversations. But there is just so much to learn from him. On n off court. A true genius
Carlos Alcaraz not normal young player look at Sinner, Ruune, look size of muscle of normal 20 year pro tennis Schelton for example and look Carlitos who i like very much but again history repeat muscle don't win but brain and corage do win.
After that talking point that he chose to hit to the cross court instead of hitting to open the court down the line,he raised his racket and pointed to down the line, which I think he thought he should have hit to down the line with open court.
These episodes are so fun and insightful to listen to. Two masters discussing tennis. So special and perhaps would love even more than just 4 times a year. One thing I couldn’t understand, why did Steve Flink constantly refer to Daniil as Daniel. It’s just a bit grating to my ears especially since he obviously knows the proper way to pronounce it. Almost as if doing it on purpose. Why? Why? Especially in an international sport like tennis where commentators and analysts always try to pronounce the names accurately. He even kind of messed up pronouncing Zverev. He said “Zzerev’ completely omitting the first ‘v’ sound. Even Gill said ‘Daniil’ several times during the discussion and still Flink kept saying Daniel. Maybe just me, but really annoyed because Flink is not some casual fan. Covering tennis is his career, he obviously knows how to pronounce ‘Daniil’.

I am not worried about Carlos at all. I think part of his game is that flair and element of wildness to his game - and probably the Novak - "never miss" type brick wall tennis perhaps isn't so much his thing, and it's quite a fight against his personality and tennis to play that way. Also - spot on Steve - agree JCF gives too many instructions. I think it would help Carlos develop faster to leave him to figure things out. In fact I would go as far as to say that it has contributed to Carlos's losses. Stick to a few "vamos" or maybe like Stuff's coach, bellowing encouragement on his feet!??
I believe that from now onwards and for the coming 12 months, Novak's targets are: 1. Ronal Garros for completing 4 times at least all slams 2a. Monte Carlo for completing 3 times at least all 1000s. 2b. Equal importance as the above, Wimbleton for equalizing the Roger's tournament record. 4. AO to extend his record in slams but with a very possible side effect as well (if not primarily for this). If Nole wins AO I believe that Rafa will not come back. 5a. US Open, I case he wins the three first slams for the year (very demanding and difficult) to complete calendar grand slam. 5b. If not, the Olympic Games to win a medal for Serbia. 7. ATP Final for the absolute record. 8. 1st in the ranking at the end of the year. 9. 400+ weeks as no.1. 10. If he wins 3+ tournaments in the coming 12 months, he will target the RF record of tournament wins in 2025. Not few for the GOAT. But for reasons like these he is the GOAT.
Gentlemen, Excellent broadcast overall Regarding Ben, I do agree with your analysis in terms of raw qualities but I am not sure on the mental side. I think this side will hold his development and what you expect from him it might never come
Djokovic has now won 3 slams a year four different times(2011, 2015, 2021, and 2023). In comparison, Federer did it thrice(2004, 2006, 2007) and Nadal once(2010). This shows how difficult it is for even all-time greats to accomplish this. If Zverev gets back to 2021/2022 FO level, Rune finds a way to fix his fitness issues, and Sinner continues his upward trajectory, then hardcourts will be very competitive next year. Imagine Djokovic, Alcaraz, Medvedev, Zverev, Sinner, and Rune all going at it.
@@jojipls Interesting Fed's years more or less predate the emergence of the big 3 while Djokovic in 2023 played in a big 3 free zone so his doing in 2011 and 2015 is the most impressive
I call Alcaraz the toddler, he can't play a point without his coach telling him what to play. I don't get how you guys call him having a high tennis IQ. I watched the 2 matches when his coach was missing and he played terribly.
Janet just admit you don’t like Carlitos. You never have anything nice to say about him. I don’t even know why you watch his matches, but I digress. Facts are cupcake he won Queen’s and JCF wasn’t even there!
It would be interesting to see what would happen with Alcaraz if they decided to stop allowing the coaching. All of his success on tour has come during the two seasons that it has been allowed. Obviously, he also came of age during that time and matured physically snd mentally, which is the more likely explanation for his success, but it would be interesting nonetheless to see what would happen.
@@colethomas903 of course I have…and I am funny. 😉. All jokes aside, I wouldn’t have brought this up before what I witnessed at the U.S. Open. The constant coaching was noticeable on a level that I hadn’t noticed it before. I don’t know if that means it wasn’t happening before or I just hadn’t noticed. It felt over the top this time though.
He would still get coached, just covertly. And he is great no matter what- the coaching is the cherry on the cake, with Alcaraz's game and talent being the cake.
Good Analysis. I felt Medvedev lost confidence(understandable when 2 sets down, especially after having a set point) or desire in the 3rd. Had he won that with Joker's body not in ideal shape he may well have won the 4th and 5th. I think he needs to improve his 5 set mentality, 2 sets down, or up as we saw in Aus V Nadal, is something you need to put in the back of your mind and focus on the 'now'! When you look at Joker, Nadal, Federer....they see or saw 2 sets down as a challenge, now is the time they can test ''what they are made of, are they champions or not''.
Yeah agreed, I think medvedev was super confident from the semifinals and given his past successes against djokovic he was probably really frustrated to somehow find himself down 0-2 Sometimes his mental state is unbreakable, other times it’s laughable
@@bsrussian Djokovic wasn't physically and mentally wasted this time unlike 2021 and even at 2 years older he was able to Serb and volley his way to victory. Quality performance. 10 to 5 in the head to head now which is a nice round multiple. Djokovic was just not going to bend in that second set even when Medvedev was like a wall. Medvedev is mentally strong but Djokovic is the mentally strongest ever. The point at 4-5 in the tie-break where djokovic man-handled Medvedev into the backhand corner to the point of failure was just beautiful.
Joker should be year-end #1 with THREE Grand Slam wins and making the Wimbledon finals; I think he will incorporate volleying more into his arsenal of weapons - he has to to shorten the rallies - like RF did in his later stage.
Great chat. Steve is truly one-of-a-kind analyst. Also I think Carlos would really want to finish another year as No.1, and Novak on the other hand... doubt he'll find that much motivation to give his best in those fall events. He has less than 1,000 points advantage over Carlos, and there are still a lot of points to be gained, so yeah I think Carlos's got this
Novak will only play two tournaments, but he will still keep the #1, Alcaraz weakest surface is indoor hard. Even if Alcaraz somehow gets the #1 back, we all know that the dominant player of the season is Novak, winning 3 slams and losing the 4th by a hair. He is the real number 1.
We’ve never seen anything from alcaraz on indoor hsrd, all novsk has to do is make a couple of good runs in bercy and Turin… he doesn’t even need to win and he’ll probably retain it unless alcaraz or even medvedev does a full sweep
@bsrussian exactly I would say we never have seen a rejuvenated motivated Carlos 2021 indoor season wasn’t bad except losing to Gaston Losing to Sascha who is one of the 3 best indoor HC player in the world ain’t a bad loss 2022 he lost to goffin Felix rune Felix and Rune were playing the best tennis of there career I expect a pretty good indoor HC 2023 season that starts in Basel for him because Beijing and Shanghai are outdoor tournaments

Gil, for some reason described his thoughts about Djokovic, not moving and Medvedev hitting behind him as if he was just thinking about it during this podcast when he articulated it already in his own podcast.. this guy seems like an expert, so maybe he didn’t want to appear too arrogant…
I think Djokovic is ability to use his back and effectively, and use it readily disheartened Menendev… because Medvedev strategy at some point was to make Djokovic use his backhand, and since he was using it so much, it kind of took that strategy out of place

Did you notice Alcaraz performance without Ferrero falls a lot? That intense coaching is turning him into a fully dependent player on Ferrero's input. Not making any good. Actually, this coaching rule must be revised. It's not making any good to the sports. This will enlarge the separation bw players who can pay and travel with a top coach vs those who can't.

Correct me if I am wrong, but couldn't Novak still be ranked World #1 at the end of the year, and also still lose the YE#1 title to Alcaraz? Djokovic is currently 3,260 points ahead in the ATP Rankings, but only 770 points ahead in the singles race. I don't quite understand the dynamic between the two distinctions. It seems like Alcaraz could easily win more points throughout the season, as well as, Djokovic edging out enough points to remain World #1 by the end of November, after the ATP Finals.
@indyshepard so after Paris is over and before Turin starts the ranking will go to whatever the race points are then u how people do at Turin will get add to that and that’s how the ranking will look to end 2023 and how u get YE #1 and how u start 2024
Gill , why so on the fence about Carlos/Ferreira constant coaching? You've said you aren't in favour of the rule change. It's one thing to argue the other side/benefits, but you are allowed to voice your own views too. Just focusing on execution turns you into a robot and then how can you trust yourself? How can you just let your body's response teach you about what the other guy is doing and how he is challenging you. That scene where he screamed at JCF "where do I serve?" was awful to witness. Like - dont you know what has worked? Havent you been paying attention? He's just relinquishing all responsibility and opportunity to trust himself. It is not edifying to watch, I dont care how well he executes when he's just an automaton, however good the shot-making. He'll never mature into a multiple Slam Champion if he gets so discombobulated by losing a TB that he goes AWOL like that. Like Apo, too much control is emasculating the player and keeping them from maturing by tackling these challenges through trusting their own ability to see whats happening on the court and responding/adapting/problem-solving.
Mednedev and Djokovic are my two favorite interviews as well. And thinking of how well Mednedev plays on Hardcourt-Nadal coming back to beat him after being two sets down I think in 2020 is a testament to Nadal’s Greatness.
I think Medvedev doesn't have the reflexes to return well from closer. Maybe with practice he can improve. Or maybe he just needs to work on hitting a deep cross court lob off the forehand return to keep his opponents honest.
There are amazing players moving up - hopefully the 2024 calendar will be more multi-dimential. Talking about Medvedev... he lost his 'killers-instinct'... He has the game.... Does he have a mental coach teaching him the skills needed to grow and manage being a top tennis player.... I feel that he needs some mentoring managing his feelings and thoughs, game plan and approach to different scenarios. He can be more.....

Among the top tier players, Medvedev flicks his wrist back and forth excessively. He won't have time to do that if he stands closer to the baseline in returning serve.

I think Novak can still play long rally’s and he displayed very well those even in USO final, he can make combinations of long rally’s and serve Vollys in future and this you will see his dominance on court ! He is such a genius to know what to play when 👍
Awesome. Thanks Gill. Flink is Nothing short of sensational
Incredible champion! 🐐❤️
I think that might’ve been what Alcaraz meant by he’s not mature enough yet.
Carlos is immature.
@@felicededuyo7999 I disagree. I think he's unexperienced and young. I think he lacks maturity, not that he's immature
Maybe he's not as talented as everyone thinks. It's one thing to blast guys off the court and perform highlight shots. It's another to formulate a deep complex strategy like Djokovic can do. Alcaraz is going to get figured out.
What a great analysis! Love podcasts like this! Keep up the good work, Gill!

It's okay...they are all legends and you can't take that away...
Has Nadal retired and not going to play next year? Not to the best of my knowledge. Yes, Nadal may not win another slam but don't you want him back on the court?
A lot of people have worried for you...
Gosh ! Amazing admission from you - wow! Congrats on that 👏
According to Uncle Toni , Rafa is planning on going to the Australian Open- so you have that to look forward to...
Bravo admission is great from you but Nadal is also legend.
@@mireafelder8194 that’s true! He wasn’t returning as well as he was against Alcaraz when he played Djokovic

But recently in a press conference Nole said they used to have to hide it so it seems like it was still a thing even if not officially
I really admire mr Flink and Gill of course. All of you tennis noobs interested in this sport. Listen to these guys and learn.
Ahh so in depth :D thanks to you both!
These post-GC talks with mr Flink are a must and awesome

What’s happening with Carlos happens to all of the greats. People are getting used to him and as spontaneous as he appears he has patterns like everybody else. This is throwing him off. This is why Djokovic and Nadal continually reinvented themselves during their careers.

I agree with Mr. Flink, as I was watching Alkaras semifinal match, it was annoying to watch Ferero coaching him pretty much every point.

I believe that from now onwards and for the coming 12 months, Novak's targets are:
1. Ronal Garros for completing 4 times at least all slams
Gentlemen,
Excellent broadcast overall
Regarding Ben, I do agree with your analysis in terms of raw qualities but I am not sure on the mental side.

Fed also did it in 2004, but Djoko is still ahead.

Now I'm looking forward tp the 2024 Australian Open!

The second set was the match. Both players knew it.
@@huzcerNah. Djokovic could have still won in 4 or 5 sets.
@@jacobschmidt2709 No doubt, but he did not need to as Medvedev seemed to have given up a touch by the end of the 2nd.

The point at 4-5 in the tie-break where djokovic man-handled Medvedev into the backhand corner to the point of failure was just beautiful.

Alcaraz was playing out of his SHOES at Wimbledon not the same at all on the HARD COURTS but played well.
Mednedev and Djokovic are my two favorite interviews as well.

@@christheprophet6583 Wimbledon is different to indoor hardcourts, this is the realm of the big servers. Medvedev might actually steal the number 2 from him in the coming months.
@@blackkitty9054 I have never heard of a player good on grass who is not good indoor. Alcaraz can adjust his game to indoor conditions.
@@christheprophet6583 Nadal was good on grass for a few years but never good on indoor. There are complete nobodies with more indoor titles than Nadal's 1!
@@huzcer Yes Nadal is a rare exception to the rule but Nadal and Alcaraz have different types of game. Nadal relies heavily on his powerful lift on forehand while Alcaraz can play flat or use lift. Alcaraz variety of shots is his strength and that is why he was able to adjust on grass in one year. After one or two tournaments indoor he will adjust. I see him contending for ATP finals.
