Amy-your 13 year-old son is correct - listen to him! Novak's gesture was great and imo, Ben was being disrespectful to the game and one of its legends. If one can't see that- it is because one has grown up in the American system. Kudos to your son who sees through it all. Also, Ben was being extremly rude to Novak with his laughing at Novak's faults, telling his ( Ben's ) parents that Novak " had no game". That is brat-like and unacceptable in a slam semi

Oh I'm glad someone else noticed it, there was talk of Shelton looking at his box and shouting "this guy's got no serve" in the first set, 2-2. He looked at Novak in the eyes, pointed at the ground and was like 'we'll grind it out here tonight!'
Also at the net, Novak was ready for a normal handshake, Shelton is the one that made it very brief and cold. He gave Novak a very mean look.

First off - we had a pandemic. Millions died. If you look at the data its clear that less people died in areas where people took the shot. My own 84 mother would have not survived would she not had 4 jabs. This isn't some guessing game. Are there maybe issues with some people? Yes but Novak decided NOT to take the shot hence the consequence was he couldn't get in. Why would he be treated different than me and you? It was his choice and his right to not take it. Fine. I respect it. However - you are wording it in such a way as if they purposely barred him from entry. EVERY other player took the shot. So no, they did not let him in because of his choices. There's a difference.

@@Kath-N Pundits say a lot of illogical things - their job seems to be to say outrageous things to drum up eyeballs. When Fed got his 20th, Nadal was ranked #1 and had 16. As dominant as he had been in the French, it was not at all crazy to think he would win four more to get to 20. Joker's quest for 20+ was much more uncertain at that exact time, as he had 12 slams, was recovering from injury, and opted for elbow surgery after the AO. But by the end of 2018, he had won both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and was ranked #1, plus he had an age advantage over Fed and Rafa, so 20, while not certain, definitely seemed doable. A truly crazy statement at the time would have been that Fed was done winning slams. Well viola!

    2. This final shows what a tough ask it is for anyone other than Joker or Carlitos to win a slam. Medvedev played an almost perfect match to beat Alcaraz but then needed another close-to-perfect match to beat Djokovic. Yes. But this also shows the very difference between the current Gen and the big 3, which is on one hand disappointing but also something to cherish...and @jacobschmidt2709 put it nicely before
For someone like Medvedev, that semi final win against Alcaraz where he played his guts out and went for it, that is his final. He cannot replicate that perfomance, unlike the big 3. And that is why he loses the very next match
Take Nadal 2009, he was destroyed after the semi final against Verdasco and wasn't able to do training before the match properly, and thought about giving up and what not, but he chose to rise to occasion. AO09
Same last year, has a gruesome match against FAA, beats fresh Novak afterwards, beats Zverev, goes to win the FO.
None of the current gen comes close. Novak, Rafa, Federer...best tennis era

New Players who can't seem to get over their weakness- Tsitsipas, Berettini, Ruud - Backhands. Medvedev, Ruud - Return positions and volleys. Rublev - Returns, 2nd Serve and variety. Been this case for a long time.

Since you know all things tennis do you know if Djokovic will lose 500 ranking points for not defending his Astana Open title or just 250 points since it has been downgraded to a 250 ATP event this year. I just hope if Alcaraz sweeps the Asian swing (very possible) and even enters and wins the Basil Open that going into Paris Bercy and the ATP Finals that if Djokovic can still end up as year end #1 if he wins those tournaments. In other words does he still control his own destiny? We both know Alcaraz will be back to #1 after the Australian Open since he missed it last year while Djokovic has 2000 points to defend. The same scenario Alcaraz faced in this years US Open. I would appreciate your reply to this question. P.S. "SHELTON was shouting VAMOS VAMOS and COME ON directly at NOVAK whenever he wins a point since the 1st set.. you can actually see the EYE-to-EYE they've had multiple times..
And when NOVAK faulted a 1st serve, which was clearly OUT, Sheton took a shot at it and directed the ball to NOVAK's feet which is rude and a big NO NO when it comes to TENNIS ETIQUETTE, same with apologizing with netball shots, he should have left the ball fly through.. THIS BEHAVIOR is actually pretty common in COLLEGE TENNIS, it's their way to "intimidate" their opponents...
THIS IS PROFESSIONAL TENNIS, he's been in the tour for 1.5 year now, HE NEEDS TO GROW UP.
CARLOS shouts almost in every point as well but he usually does it to the crowd and to his player box, NOT ON HIS OPPONENT.

I think that Schelton was rapidly going the wrong way, instead of growing up, as a person and as a player.
. I watched him playing (and losing) to our Laslo Djere earlier this year, on Cagliari Challenger. His "current" court antics were NOT present, he behaved like pretty decent youngster, College star with some on court habits that could impress teenage cheerleader, but nothing special.
But, only a few weeks later, on Wimbledon 2023, when Ben again played - and again lost - to Laslo Djere- it was both embarrassing and annoying watching Ben mimicking into Djere's face on the net, screaming "yeeeiii " in falsetto after scoring some point, like - his outbursts of joy after Djere's unforced errors etc etc.
And, then that dial up victory performance after Tiafoe lost was Ben reaching a new low.
Glad that Novak scolded him, on court and off court.
      And, by the way:
      Carlitos is 20y old, too.
But, his amazing successes are matching with his sportsmanship. And showmanship.
Schelton is nowhere near him, in any aspect, and I guess it'll stay that way.
Maybe I'm wrong, we'll see soon.

I was pretty sure that Medvedev won't have 2 awesome days back to back to win against Djokovic also. It was the same problem for players for the last 13-14 years that had to beat at least 2 of the Djokovic, Nadal and Federer in the same Grand Slam in order to win it. If I'm not mistaken the only player that managed to do this in a Grand Slam and he did it twice, was Wawrinka in 2014 beating Djokovic and Nadal in Australia and in 2015 in RG beating Federer and Djokovic after.

When you need to deal with slice serve that puts you out of the court, it's very hard to control the ball. You can barely reach it so the most natural return is crosscourt hit. Hitting down the line is extremely hard to control in this case. Medvedev tried down the line couple of time and made mistakes every time. The same story is the lob, especially with Medvedev's positioning so deep. You can almost never see players on pro level trying to lob from return position

You don't have to like Djokovic as a person. You don't have to like his bathroom break strategies mid match. You don't have to like his passionate and controversial father figure. You don't have to like his vaccine stance and PTPA formation. You don't have to like his passionate behavior on court and the smashing of rackets. You don't even have to like Novaks playstyle. However, nobody can deny this mans greatness as both a tennis player and athlete. What he is doing is special and unprecedented in the sport of tennis. After losing to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, what does Novak do? Beat Alcaraz in an epic Cincinnati thriller(getting redemption from Wimbledon) and beating Medvedev in the USO final(getting redemption from two years ago). Both Djokovic and his fans couldn't have asked for a better summer. Have players like Federer and Nadal(especially on clay)had higher peaks? Possibly so. But Novaks consistency of maintaining a high level year in and year out and mastering both the mind and body is where he seperates himself from the other two. Congrats to Djokovic on #24 and further cementing himself as the greatest player of the big 3.
    A few additional thoughts:
I think people took too much stock in that 2021 USO final and forgot the circumstances. The pressure of winning the calendar Slam + playing the Olympics + not getting proper preparation for the USO= losing many sets + 5 set semi vs a red hot Zverev + Meds high level was the perfect storm that led to a straight set Medvedev victory. Had Medvedev faced a normal Djokovic in that final, he probably would have had to win in a tight 4 or 5 setter.
Djokovic equaled Nadal at 4 USO titles a piece. What does this mean? Novak is clearly the better USO player of the two now. Don't believe me? His win/loss ratio and number of finals is much superior. The Serb also beat Federer and Nadal back to back to win one of his titles and his weakest finals opponent was Medvedev. In contrast, Nadal never beat back to back great players to win it and his weakest finals opponent was Anderson. Djokovic fans can now relax. The discourse of Nadal being greater at the USO has finally been put to rest.
Despite the loss to Medvedev, Alcaraz has had a phenomenal year and still remains the greatest 20 year old that we have ever seen. 1 slam, 2 slam semis, 2 masters and still more to come. How will he respond to Medvedev if they meet at the AO?
Medvedev is back and he remains a top tier hardcourt player. Had Daniel won the second set, who knows what would have happened. Beating Alcaraz in a slam is no joke and he should be proud of his run. However, his inferiority to Djokovic clearly showed in that final. He lacks the net skills and transition game which Djokovic excells at. Unless Djokovic slows down, he will likely remain the second best hardcourt player in the world. Cheers to the three of you. Keep up the great content.

I am a lifelong Djokovic fan. I think we should give Daniel a bit more respect for his match against Carlos. I saw the full match. He beat Carlos hands down with his baseline game which I believe is the best in the world, even better than Djokovic.

The BBC just couldn’t help itself and pettily (and predictably) headlined that Djokovic had equalled Margaret Court’s Grand Slam tally, most of which were won before the open era 😅 Well done Novak, both for your tennis and for standing up to tyranny

Please watch 2011 U.S Open semi final press conference by Federer after his loss to Novak. Sheer sour grapes and arrogant. Federer is not a nice person as portrayed by the media. Novak is the most sportive among the big 3 and most gracious when he loses unlike Federer or Nadal.

Nothing to do with keeping the ball on Djoko's BH, Medve tried that many times and he lost most of them esp on the longer rallies which Novak used to great success from late 2nd set onwards.
At the Aussie last year, Medve lost not cause of " a lack of volleys" but he gassed and got cramps. Nadal was struggling too but the difference is Nadal is mentally and physically a true beast and he toughed it out to win. I really respect that aspect of Nadal now that I see these next genners flaking out at half the pain that Nadal put up with.

I believe Novak did the phone hangup thing partly because it's really disrespectful to do that, especially after he bit Tiafoe, who apparently is a friend of his. Do you do that kind of celebration after beating a friend?? NOBODY does that. And so, in a way, I think Novak was giving it right back as a way of saying that's not ok. I think Novak was protecting other players, in a weird ways. ("Let's see how it feels when it's done to you" kinda thing.)

To think this was a straightforward win is krazy. Meds is a streaky player, and if he wins that set point, he wins the match imo - he was very comfortable with his court positioning in the 2nd set and would not miss, until the tiebreak - his forehand let him down - then we saw the streakiness go the other way in the 3rd set

and based on what you are saying Medvedev would win the match if he won second set? Give me reasons...how about Novak winning 95% of slam matches after winning 1st set? You are using you emotions hidden in hopes and you want to make yourself feel better with that statement.

The point that surprised me was 2nd set tiebreak where I believe Medvedev had tied it up 5-5 or was up 6-5 and he played the point super passively and let Novak dictate. I mean, he's down a set. He has to go for it. And Novak ended up winning the point. It was like he was waiting for Novak to make a mistake instead of going out and WINNING the point.
