This win was more impressive than the one at Roland Garros, his serving was amazing but most importantly he broke Alcaraz's serve time and time again. This one is becoming a true rivalry now with three GS quarterfinals 2-1 in favor of Zverev

Well played to Zverev but very perplexing loss for Alcaraz. I contrast this to when Rafa beat Meddy. Rafa started off poorly and was having little success against an in form player. But Rafa found a way. He changed tactics and introduced a ton of variety. He also held firm in crucial moments. Alcaraz still needs to fine tune his game where he can find ways to win when his opponent is on fire and he can’t hit through them. That will separate him from Rafa and Novak who always find a way even when they are not playing their best. If Rafa and Novak played Zverev today, they would have dragged this match to the 5th set and found a way to diffuse Sascha’s game. They would have a found a way.

I remember Alcaraz at Wimbledon 2023. He was both a creative and patient player.
Unfortunately, since then, he's no longer patient, he doesn't play intelligently: he makes life difficult for himself.
I feel like I'm seeing the Carlitos of the early days again: the one who was messy, the one who rushed things, the one who didn't have a game plan.
Today he's playing against an in-form Zverev and instead of pounding Sacha's forehand, which remains his weak shot by far, he's taking the liberty of playing diagonal backhands... This is horrendous in a tactical point of view. You'll never see a player from the Big 3 do that: when they play, they press where it hurts.
Another thing : where are the variations in rhythm ? Why did he spend his entire match trying to hit harder than Zverev, who is one of the players who absorbs power best ? Does he need grass to make slices ?
All this makes me wonder about his dependence on Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Anyway, i'm still convinced he's going to be a legendary player, but he really needs to relearn how to control himself and get some real structure to his game.

@@Mr.Baguette92 his dependence on Juan is not new, i wouldn't say dependence but rather assistance, he has benefitted greatly from coaching being allowed, however, with your analysis, you take out the player on the other side, namely Zverev.
there are mistakes Carlos has done, surely, but when it comes to the first two and a half sets of Zverev' play, there was nothing he could do. all your sugestions are futile when Zverev serves an unreturnable or has a big +1 or simply goes for his powershots confidently instead of being passive like by the end of the third and during the 4th pretty often.
Alcaraz' best version had nothing to offer in comparison to Zverev' best version, at least not on a somewhat quick hardcourt like the AUSO. even at his best Alcaraz isn't unbreakable, Zverev is.

He has more tape on him now, and players are adjusting to Alcaraz's "go for broke" approach. However, with Alcaraz's skill-set, it's truly only the top players that can take advantage because the margin for error is smaller.
Alcaraz will learn when to strategically attack and go all-out, and when to play for another point and back-off. It will be interesting to see how he adapts moving forward!

This match reminded me a lot of the US open semi Alcaraz played: incredible serving from his opponent, way too many unforced errors from Carlos due to trying to overpower a more defensive counterpunching opponent, dropping two sets in a row with little effort required from his opponent… Alcaraz just played a rag-tag match against an in-form opponent, likely due to his underestimation of his Zverev. Disappointing, but I guess not surprising given that he’s still young and needs to mature mentally

  • @basileblin2012
    @basileblin2012 7 місяців тому +4

Hey Gill ! It is absolutely not my objective to underestimate Sasha's performance, he was great and should receive a lot of credit, especially for his start. In my opinion, his amazing start was responsible for what I thought happened, i.e. Alcaraz getting super tight in the beginning of the first set. Signs of this would be his movement, far from his level (especially footwork to get him into attacking and agressive positions, but also speed around the court), and the tightness of his arms, also explaining forehands and drop shots in the middle of the net, which cannot only be explained by bad choices and being rushed. I think it was more than that. Other signs could also be his facial expression, resembling the one he had against Novak in Roland Garros, in even worst. He seemed kind of paralyzed, like his body was amorphous. And I feel like Carlos was clearly liberated from this tightness, between 5-5 and the tiebreak; (a great example of communicating vessels in tennis, with Zverev getting tight near the finish line) Carlos was another player after that, his movement looked way more energetic and his shots were at their real speed. But like in Roland, he suffered a backlash, not in his body, but probably in his mental. Like even if he was liberated, he was coming from too far to be fully confident in his game, and lost his focus again in important moments, making the kind of mistakes I think he actually makes pretty regularly, more often than the ones he made in the first three sets. Credits for Sasha's fighting in the fourth set though, I really believed that Carlos would destroy him from this point on ... but as you said we already knew he had the fighter mentality ! I would love to have your opinion on this, how do you see it ?

Well Gill mentioned a lot of what you said, just in more precise manner. For example he said, early in the start of analysis that Carlos showed signs of panic early on, which is more correct than what you said.
I mean your analysis is excellent, especially that you noticed the facial expression "resembling the one he had against Novak in Roland Garros". But this happened towards the end, not in the beginning. With everything else Gill 100% would agree.

@@yanair2091 That's right, I just thought that he did not really mention how this tension may have affected Carlos physically ! But that is maybe because it was not really the case, and my observation was biased by the fact that I was surprised by the extent to which Zverev dominated, and therefore looked for answers on the other side of the net. He probably did not see much of a Carlos physical inability to play at his best level, and that is why I asked, I wanted to know !

A few takeaways I saw here:
    1. Carlos had a super shaky start. He was nervous the moment he came onto the court, and I think he genuinely had no game plan ready. Didn’t really know what to do against Zverev. I was shocked how little he played to the forehand as well. The errors in that first set seriously piled up. Also his first serve didn’t really show up.
    2. Zverev’s serve was otherworldly. Not only getting so many first serves in, but also hitting his spots pretty well. Zverev did a pretty good job attacking Carlos’s second serve and being aggressive off the forehand at times. Zverev really snapped into form after playing pretty weak during rounds 1-4, as I had feared he would.
    3. Alcaraz’s H2H advantages over the top players are dwindling. Sinner is 4-3 against him, Djokovic is 3-2, Medvedev 2-3, Zverev 5-3. Granted, these are all very close head-to-heads, but maybe Alcaraz needs to adjust some tactics here.
Alcaraz will receive a lot of hate for this match, and already has, but let’s make some things clear: Alcaraz has only lost to elite players since the moment he appeared on tour. Wimbledon 2021 (18 year old qualifier Alcaraz): lost to Medvedev. USO 2021: loss to FAA in QFs. AO2022: lost to Berrettini (who was top 10 and made SF). RG2022: Zverev, Wimbledon2022: Sinner, USO2022 no one, AO2023 injured, RG2023 Djokovic, Wimbledon 2023 no one, USO 2023 Medvedev, now Zverev. None of the other top players can make that claim except Djokovic.
Also the fact that we can say Alcaraz played poorly in a tight 4 set loss to Zverev serving 85% is a testament to how incredible Alcaraz is at his best. He will be fine, and hopefully will use these losses to learn.
As for Zverev, he has a peak level that can really beat anyone, and has proven he can step his game up during slams nowadays. I still don’t knowing he has enough in the tank to actually win the tournament, but it’s tough to doubt his stamina. This was only a 3 hour match so maybe he’ll be able to recover for the Medvedev match.

1 takeaway from that match: if Zverev didn't get tight and passive serving at 5:3 in the 3rd set this match would have ended as a complete demolition. It literally means that for 3 straight sets Alcaraz didn't find any solution for a top form Zverev on a relatively fast hard court. And Alcaraz had the whole preseason to prepare for this tournament, he didn't play any tour level match in 2 months before the start of AO - he played an excellent exhibition match against Djokovic on 27th of Decemeber. Only exhibition but they played pretty much seriously and Alcaraz looked great already then. Fully prepared for AO, he went through a first week a little bit rusty at the beginning but firing on all cylinders against pretty solid Kecmanovic in the 4th round. So he looked sharp and absolutely ready for any top player in qf. I think he needs to learn a lot (tactically, mentally, tennis wise, call it as you wish) how to not find himself completely hopeless in a match like this again. Obviously he's a great tennis player and usually learns very quickly but somehow this performance looked much worse than against top Medvedev at the USO.

@@Pedant_PatrolHe’s still doing better at age 20 than any of the big 3 besides maybe Nadal. Let’s not get it twisted. The big 3 had their fair share of embarrassing losses when they were young too. Nadal getting blown off the court by Tsonga at AO2008 is one example that came to mind for me, but Djokovic blowing a 2 set lead to a relative nobody at RG2010 (when he was 23!) is another one. Said he hit rock bottom at that point having not won a major in two years.
Let’s not overreact to Alcaraz losing to a top 5 caliber player. You guys are ridiculous sometimes.

@@marekwichniarek268Well if if if doesn’t exist. Zverev always gets tight before a big win; he wouldn’t be Zverev if he didn’t. And he’s beaten Djokovic in some huge matches like Olympics 2021, ATP Finals 2018 (6-4 6-4) and ATP Finals 2021. So let’s stop acting like this is some embarrassing loss for Carlos. As I pointed out in my comment, he hasn’t had an embarrassing loss at a slam basically ever; he has lost to elite players since he was an 18 year old qualifier. This level of consistency is unprecedented at his age and the expectations are staggering, as proven by this comment section.
At the moment you’re speaking of, I actually thought back to Nadal getting crushed by Tsonga at AO2008. He lost 2-6 2-6 2-6, and it felt similar. Zverev served 85% on first serves which is basically unheard of in a 4 set match. Tsonga had a similar redline. As Nadal grew up, and keep in mind by 2008 he was already basically in his prime, he learned how to more effectively counter big hitters. In AO2009 he survived an on-fire Verdasco and Federer, both of whom 100% would’ve beaten his 2008 version at AO. In 2012 he survived a similar onslaught from Berdych who served and smacked ground strokes like a madman, then beat a very in-form Federer. Nadal learned how to deal with big hitters, and it isn’t to scramble around like crazy 20 feet behind the baseline.
Young players struggle with being rushed. Alcaraz will learn how to deal with it soon, and every loss is a teaching moment. At least he’s losing to great players and consistently making QFs and SFs. And as I pointed out, Zverev can beat anyone on his day. He’s beaten even Novak before in big matches.
Alcaraz found ways to be competitive in this match despite having an off day. He was rattled, his tactics were bad, and these are normal things for young players to go through. Zverev may have put up one of the best serving performances in recent history as well, and he’s a top 5-10 baseliner in the world. This was a difficult match for anyone, and I don’t even know if Djokovic, Sinner, or Medvedev could’ve dealt with Zverev serving like this. They lucked out not having him in their quarter. I agree any of those three probably would’ve offered more resistance early on, forced some tiebreaks, but Zverev serving 85% and hitting his spots is near impossible to beat.

I find it strange that Alcaraz and other young players like Sinner jut keep trying to hit every ball with all their might. When it works, it works, but they're tiring themselves out in a 5 set GS. They have a lot of variety but the mental aspect is still not there. It'll come in time but I feel their teams better start working on that asap. Wimbledon onwards Alcaraz has sort of plat3ud (based on the crazy but deserved hype) and Sinner has improved a lot.

Zverev played really well. I thought he would choke, as he usually does when it seems almost obvious that he should win. He didn't and deserved to win.

Got to tell you, Gill, I think your analysis of Alcaraz in this match is just dead wrong. You think he lacked patience and gave Zverev too many opportunities to counterpunch against his net rushing? I believe, although I don't have the exact stats, that in the first two sets, when Alcaraz got SMOKED, Alcaraz actually came to the net FEWER times than Zverev did. Well, Alcaraz has a better volley and in general should be coming to the net MORE than Zverev. Every time Alcaraz got into a long rally with Zverev, I felt that Zverev had the advantage, in part because Alcaraz looked like he had no plan to be aggressive, and rather thought he'd just be able to blast his way to victory from the baseline. That led to too many errors. You mentioned that the match somehow seemed unique or hard to predict, but to me it looked a lot like Alcaraz's loss to Medvedev in the USO last year.
The other thing that sunk Alcaraz, and here I think you agree, was his inabiliy to return Zverev's first serve back into play. Just too many cheap points given away there. I half mused in the match that Alcaraz should take a page out of Medvedev's book and just keep standing farther back until he started getting more returns back in play--as Medvedev described in his post-match interview with Courier. Alcaraz certainly has the speed to get back into position if he did.

@@TendaiMatambanadzo Zverev played great. I even mentioned that he attacked the net more than Carlitos--that's one dividend of having improved his volley. His serve was very strong--remember when we worried about his second serve? Not today. My gripe was with Gill's apparent view that Alcaraz just needed to be more patient from the baseline. I don't think that was his main problem.

There was an equilibrium shift and Alcaraz adapted badly tactically.

We see this again and again. Alcaraz can at times play like a rank 50 player with barely anything remarkable to show. Then suddenly out of nowhere he starts playing like a god, at a level that literally no one in the world can handle. You might think that this is something new, something that came after his slump after Cincinatti. Not true. The same happened in Roland Garros and Wimbledon against Djokovic. Djoker punished Carlito for his level fluctuations and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. As great as Alcaraz is potentially he is still just 20 years old. Carlito was a little flat in night conditions & Zverev came with an excellent game plan that he was able to execute off getting 85% of his first serves in and some excellent returning. Perhaps Carlito could have changed his return position more but Zverev should beat anyone in the world with 85% first serves going in, including the Djoker. Usually, "intelligence" is not something you can "acquire" or "learn!" Whatever a players weaknesses exist early-on, are the same weaknesses that will be apparent later. If everyone could acquure a 160 IQ by "learning," than we would see many people go through that process!
NFL graveyards are filled with quarterbacks who had ALL of the physical gifts: perfect height, cannon-arm, accuracy, thick musculature, toughness, good speed, solid runner, etc. But, they were mostly missing the "glue" that turned those physical gifts into a formidable weapon- intelligence!
I don't think Alcaraz is a dumb player per se, but he does, at times, definitely manifest some "strategic deficiencies!" He will continue to refine his game as he gets older but, will he be able to defeat an opponent with similar, or somewhat similar, physical gifts but, who has much more foresight, smarts, and makes the necessary adjustments during a tough match?
