      That's a good idea. We do talk about lone words integrated in some of our lessons but having a dedicated lesson about it would be interesting. Thanks for your suggestion. We'll definitely consider that.

    I'm not sure if that's the loan words because it's more like those items or things are from western.
    People learn those things, or those things are from western. So, they use the similar pronunciation for Chinese.
    For example: hamburger ¯hon ˊbou

    I had no idea there are English loan words in Mandarin - how about Cantonese? Anyway, thanks for this!

    • @ChinesePodTV
      @ChinesePodTV  5 років тому +2

      Since Hong Kong has been under British control for several year, Cantonese also borrowed many words from English such as Taxi 的士 Mandarin.: dīshì, Cantonese.: dik1 si2.

      沙发,巴士、克隆、摩登、咖啡。。。so many load words in Mandarin. And cantonese is an colloquial language used in Guangdong, Guangxi and Hongkong, Macao. but the formal language used in Hongkong is Traditional Chinese (Hongkong), similiar with Traditional Chinese Taiwan.

    Is 很酷 something Chinese people would actually say?

    • @taproot12
      @taproot12 5 років тому +6

      No not at all, not even in slang. Most people will probably have to think twice before they would understand what you mean. Use 牛逼 (niubi), 厉害(lihai) or 倍儿棒 {bei-er bang) if you want to use northern dialect. Chinesepod is managed by Hong Kongese or Cantonese immigrants who think they know mandarin.

      18,000,000 results in Google search, so clearly someone is saying it!

    • @taproot12
      @taproot12 5 років тому

      @@PutItAway101 Chinese has thousands and thousands of characters. Search any character and you are bound to find millions of search results. Written language can differ from spoken language (for example 与 and 和, nobody says 与 but they have the same meaning ) its up to you if you want to follow google search, but trust me as a Beijing local that nobody uses 很酷 in the Mainland.

    • @PutItAway101
      @PutItAway101 5 років тому +1

      @@taproot12 You're free to your opinion, but I prefer facts. If you google "很酷" in quotes, so it searches the exact phrase, not the random combination of characters you are pretending is causing the result, you get countless pages by Chinese speakers using this exact word with this exact meaning. Just read some. It's obvious this is a real word people use. Don't embarrass yourself denying reality just because you didn't happen to know a word, accept you got something wrong and move on.

    • @elijahwilcott9489
      @elijahwilcott9489 5 років тому

      The bigger issue is writing it - words that come from other languages have to be matched up with Chinese characters for writing purposes. Certainly, some people intermix Chinese characters with English letters, but this is extremely informal. Any kind of professional writing would eliminate those kinds of inconsistencies.
