@@ashley-fk6dp I'm just relaying a story. If it doesn't work for you, find something else.
Nowadays, a lot of foreigners become multilingual. So, people need to stop badmouthing them or it will slap them back 😓
This has happened to me in elevators in my old university, back when my Chinese was at the lower advanced level (I could read 3000 characters and understood pretty well... I haven't practiced in eight years so a lot of that is now gone). They were talking about me, so when they got off the elevator, I made a snarky comment about how nice it was to meet other people that spoke Mandarin and ended it with a wave and a 再見!
I think it is very rude of people talking behind your back in another language. Tell alot about those people does'nt it? Tells a lot about there character.
@@andrewemery7459 Well LOL I would rather they do it where I can hear them than they do it after I've left.
Honestly, in my case, I don't really care what people say or think about me, so I was more amused.
i dont mean to be rude but why would one study 3000 characters and then quit a language. doesnt make any sense to me
@@johnny1max113 If you don’t use it, you lose it. I have a minor in Spanish but very few people in my area speak it and would want to practice with me. I also don’t have a great opportunity to use it in my job at the moment. I haven’t chosen to “quit” Spanish. I’ve had to put other things at a higher priority. Learning a language is a lifelong commitment that takes continual practice. It’s like a muscle - without consistent use, it will atrophy.
@@johnny1max113 It doesn't have to make sense to you, but here's the explanation: I was living in Canada, and then moved to Chile, where there are almost no Chinese language speakers, materials, or availability. As I didn't speak Spanish, the priority became learning Spanish instead of continuing on in Mandarin at the time: I had nobody to practice with. I also don't really like Mandarin (largely Taiwanese, as that's what I insisted on studying) entertainment, so I felt little inclination to get that listening component in by watching it.
Furthermore, my job is very demanding, and requires a lot of study constantly as is. I also have a severe and chronic autoimmune disorder that really leaves me drained and sometimes unable to function for months at a time.
Combine all those things, and I had higher priorities to fill the time I did have, fewer opportunities to maintain my skills, and a lack of energy due to severe and medication-resistant Crohn's Disease.
Now I have moved to a community with many east Asians and my disease is currently in remission, so I am picking back up my Mandarin (which is going very well), learning Japanese, and studying Classical Chinese for fun.
Really, I have no desire to learn Spanish and only got by with the basic minimums for communication, but it was a difficult time.
You'd be surprised how fast it comes back. I've only been going a few weeks and I'm probably back up to 1500 characters.
Also, I spend a great deal of time studying things not out of practicality, but because I have interests and enjoy challenging my mind. I also study, for example, many programming languages that I am vanishingly unlikely to use, because the experience of studying something quite different from what you are familiar with is one that broadens the mind and keeps it sharp: the process and not the end result is what is sometimes important.
At least Japanese will be very useful for me to know since I like a lot of Japanese entertainment, and knowing Chinese characters is a huge help to learning Japanese.
Such wholesome heartwarming goodness man, it brings me so much joy to see the connection!!

Trying to do my second semester of Mandarin and intro to Spanish this year thanks to you. Your videos made me want to learn languages, even if they aren't easy. I may not get the same reactions you do as I'm Chinese, but better than not trying.
I made the same mistake of not learning Mandarin as a child but im trying to learn

That's great!! Good job!!!

Love this! It shows that despite the different languages, people are just people the world over. Things like this help break down barriers and blind prejudice. Keep them coming; there is a great deal of misunderstanding of Chinese people in America.

I was Commissioning a factory in the UK, the main part of it was French built and we was having all sorts of problems. The French engineers came in and found it was a problem with the machines they installed and they was not up to the job, lucky for me my colleague who was stood behind them spoke French. In a meeting we attended afterwards with the French engineers they blamed us for the issues, my colleague said that’s not what you said earlier, very embarrassing..
epic
Yeah the entire internet has adult videos, you ain't special
Similar experiences here. I speak a few European languages, though it was some naughty Spaniards for me, discussing how they could claim poor quality to pay less. I was a factory worker at the time and they were doing a walk around the factory floor with the bosses. I simply joined in their conversation 🤣
I read the exact same comment but it was for Japanese lol

Oh, that looks like fun! What a bunch of fun and interesting people to meet!
Always fun to watch.
Can never get over their reactions of a American speaking their language. And those ladies gushing over him having a Asian wife was cute. I’m glad this dude gives them this experience
It's always cool to see an US person that doesn't behave like the rest of the world should bow to him/her and meets other nationalities halfway.
This video was really great, I LOVE when people talk shit about me in Spanish, and then when I laugh and respond to them right back they always change their tune so fast, you can just see the embarrassment of them realizing they're completely wrong about you. A lot of times they will immediately be genuinely friendly in acknowledging their mistake.

Kinda trippy for a rabbit. I am impressed.
@Olog Hai you sound like a child
I cant get away with this. I look Mexican as hell, and ya spanish was my first language but I rarely use it. Now when I speak spanish, native speakers tell me i sound super american lol. Anyway, shop owners and vendors automatically speak to me in spanish just cuz they're pretty sure I speak it.

Love this! Love that everyone is laughhing too!
It's always great to see how everyone lights up as soon as you speak their language. Like instant connection I love it!
@eioshen boboi That's because everyone inherently knows that languages shape the way we think and feel and go about our daily lives. Knowing someone's language is a short route to knowing a person on a non-physical intimate level.

This made me smile so much... just shows that if you speak someone's language, you connect to them on another level 😀
I love how their mood instantly changes once they know you can understand them, they feel heard and validated in a way native born Americans rarely acknowledge. I can barely speak one language so learning a second is out of my realm of possibility but im glad you are out there lifting their spirits even that small amount. Were all in this together.

It's so heartwarming, especially in these times where we've been isolated for too long, to see people connecting like this. Keep posting these videos, Xiaoma! They really lift my spirit!
Really shows us how language really is a barrier, social and cultural. Sure, everyone can learn English, but you can't express certain things exactly the same in English compared to your native language.
I have to change entire sentences just because i forgor 💀 one simple word.

Schools here in England (used to?) teach French and German, and I'm pretty sure American schools have Spanish classes. Most countries also teach English as a second language if it's not their native tongue. So there is opportunity for most people to be bilingual.
@@mydogeatspuke I’m Canadian and schools here “teach” French until grade 9 and if you have the space in your classes and the want you can take it throughout the rest of highschool until grade 12 but honestly it’s crap. I took it all the way through school and It’s not usable in actual conversation. It’s all grammar and structure/writing and just unrealistic lessons. We have a full French province here, Quebec, and they make fun of the rest of the country because after taking years and years of French we can’t even communicate with them lmao it’s a mess and waste of time. I have many québécois friends from attending college on the border of the province and I’ve learned more from them. The only thing I remember are a few songs, how to introduce myself, ask a few simple questions and say goodbye from the actual classes. You are not bilingual after them. I’ve talked to many people from the states because I was so close to the border aswell and there was a military base right there and it’s about the same thing with Spanish classes depending on where you live in the USA. More money, time and effort needs to be invested in second language classes. It’s such a skill and needs to be stressed here. I’m beyond jealous of other places lol.
@@mydogeatspuke also there are multiple different dialects of French so we’re just taught basically one that doesn’t exist lol just this weird textbook shit. Learning outside of school too is beyonddddd expensive here and unless you have the opportunity/access/means you just don’t learn another language groaning up.
@@soccerchick1 I had plenty of English classmates go on to take French speaking jobs after learning the fundamentals in school. Being able to speak a language doesn't mean you know the language. I don't find it useless to be able to understand a second language in the same ways we understand our own. Kids will make fun of anyone for anything so their opinions really aren't that interesting. You don't learn advanced algebraic equations in primary school math because you need to learn the basics first. That's what grade school is for.
@@soccerchick1 there are multiple dialects in England too but English is still universal..
These videos are a lot of fun. My mom and dad used to go to a Chinese restaurant in downtown LA where the owner taught my dad just enough to order in Mandarin.
