Right!! Unlike some Americans who make fun of other non-english speakers of how they speak english, most asians love hearing non-native speakers speak their language because it's a sense of admiration that a non-native is interested in the language ❤️
It's great when people try to learn our languages actually! Especially when they say it's because they want to understand our culture better :D we often don't see genuine appreciation from the west, so when people put in the effort to learn a language completely different from their mother tongue because they think our traditions are beautiful, it's really a huge compliment to us.
Same with Mexicans. We love hearing others trying to speak Spanish. It’s a shame that I’ve been looked down upon here in America because I have an accent when speaking the English language ☹️
@hemangi bawa west ? Are you a moron. Do not try to be ignorant and make such a sweeping statement about a large part of the world. Just because Americans normally speak one language, doesn’t mean the countries deemed “western” speak one language. We have many countries and cultures and most of us Europeans are bilingual, trilingual or speak more than 4 languages. So relax with sweeping statements, as it makes you seem foolish.
That's how Asian in majority. We are so impressed if someone try to speak using our language because it is an honor that you find time to practice and put a lot of effort to learn the language. Unlike Western, you will turn down because of your accent even your English is perfect.

Unsure. Doesn't China have a chronic one-child policy hangover where females were aborted? I mean a foreign woman having a Chinese man should be way more accepted.
@@rapidboots3615 Yeah, China did only allow certain farmers or elites to have multiple kids up until 2015 starting 1980. Since all adults of 'marriable' age were born within this timeframe most of them are either lacking siblings or are part of a family with illegal 'black' children (that often were denied basic rights and a passport unless the parents paid a hefty fine). Because especially the rural families preferred sons for physical labor (hence aborted or, lacking prenatal diagnostics, abandoned girls), there's a huge surplus of men doomed to being single forever (unless gay, which is a whole other 'issue' in China) or engaging with a foreign wife. The pressure to financially or at least optically excel is therefore massive for men. This has a potential for major population decline, mixing with foreign ethnicities and ultimately social unrest. The sad result of this now are 'realistic multi purpose' female dolls.

mark is definitely not fluent but im still very impressed. his vocabulary is more varied than i would expect and the way in which he expressed himself, despite the accent, was clear and completely understandable. kudos to him for taking the challenge of learning mandarin!!
I think people thought he didn't understand the question because of the slightly unusual response of "very interesting". So they laughed as to say "haha ok he doesn't REALLY know mandarin". But then when Mark correctly answered the question, giving a long and conceptually coherent response, people where very impressed. English-speaking people are very used to seeing foreigners speaking English, so you take it for granted. But for chinese people this is an incredible experience.
@@uditkarode Chinese is so much harder because it is different. Learning Spanish when you know Portuguese is a lot easier because they are similar. But we only realise how similar French, Portuguese and English are when you start to learn a language which is not. So learning English when you know another western European language is easy compared to Chinese because the grammar structures are similar. But for a Chinese English is as different from Chinese as Chinese is from English for an Englishmen.
They thought he didn’t understand the question the interviewer asked when he said, “Very interesting.” When he actually responded “three reasons” the crowed was caught off guard that he actually understood it!
He actually learned. Something most Americans cannot do and then end up with a President who looks like a 45. Now every country thinks America is a joke.
The reason why it sounds so funny to me as a native Mandarin speaker is because of the bizarre way he phrases. This is probably the main reason why the audience kept laughing. He sounds like a robot with google translate installed.
@@musical.theoryall his words made sense, and his pronunciation isn’t that bad. The phrasing is just awkward and word choice was super simple, but still very understandable. I don’t think the crowd was laughing because it was bad, probably just surprised/excited
It sounds like direct translation from English / a European language, and it sounds like my Siri / a robot. All his words make sense semantically yet all are unnatural.@@musical.theory
No the crowd was surprised and impressed. They were trying to clap every time he said anything. His choice of vocabulary was a bit odd but I think it’s obvious that’s very difficult for non natives. Also I think he says Chinese a lot more casually than native Chinese people do which is making everyone laugh. Chinese celebrity talks are often quite formal (compared to English) with very calculated jokes, with everyone trying to maintain their public image. Since he’s not being formal people think he is trying to joke from his mannerisms.
Please excuse his bad accent. The new Facebook Translate program is still in its infancy so should there be any bugs and errors, we will compensate by fixing it in future updates. Thank you for your cooperation.
Damn, he really does understand every single word he has spoken. It is not like some other guys just learning the pronunciation by heart, he actually understands Chinese grammar and is quite confident while using varies vocabularies. He obviously doesn't have the pronunciation, but knowing the fact that he actually speak Chinese is surprising. I thought he might just know very little amount of words. As you can see, the audience didn't actually think that he can understand the question, but he does (well it is kind ofsuspicious, I think he does know the exact question coming in the first place).

Fluent implies you can hold conversation and use the language as a practical tool for inquiring communicating etc. it’s not the same as being an expert or native level speaker
@New_Account not in Mandarin. the exact pitch is important. you can say "chong" and "chong" with different pitch and get different look from people. Besides, it's not like tonality is completely absent in English either. the way you end a sentence--whether with a downward inflection in tone or and upward inflection, could determine whether you're making a statement or a question, and sometimes if you go high enough, you could express sarcasm. contrary to consensus, English isn't as tonally-void as people would like to believe
@New_Account These are the sorts of questions and answers you'd find in a beginner Chinese textbook. He has no control over the tones of the language, which are critical to Chinese speaking. His pronunciation is very poor. He doesn't yet understand the timing or expression required to make a sentence sound natural, and has to think before speaking basic words. He is by no means fluent. This is exactly what a beginner sounds like. He's not even close to being a low-level intermediate speaker. At best, he's on his way to HSK2, nearly 3,000 words short of what you'd need for mid-level fluency.

It's great when people try to learn our languages actually! Especially when they say it's because they want to understand our culture better :D we often don't see genuine appreciation from the west, so when people put in the effort to learn a language completely different from their mother tongue because they think our traditions are beautiful, it's really a huge compliment to us.

Can you explain a bit more? For example, which words didn't make sense or which words would a Chinese native speaker more likely use?
@@musical.theoryall his words made sense, and his pronunciation isn’t that bad. The phrasing is just awkward and word choice was super simple, but still very understandable. I don’t think the crowd was laughing because it was bad, probably just surprised/excited

I love how he's admitting his bad Mandarin, but the title says "fluent"
@New_Account he sounded fluent but yeah his tonality seems off and I don't even speak Chinese. haha Ok I know like 2 phrases
If the title said "bad Chinese" I wouldn't have clicked on it💁🏻♀️

I dont care if his accent is terrible, at least he can speak it! Chinese is difficult af, he deserves credit
Chinese is NOT difficult...why the fuck do people think it is? THe grammar is simple as hell. The pronunciation is the only hard part.
+NeCacaluXuxultic well I personally tried to learn it and also have chinese friends that agree with me, but I guess everyone has different opinions :)
Ari G the grammar is as basic as it gets :/
+NeCacaluXuxultic speaking it is easy but writing it is hard. There are only 26 letters in the alphabet but millions of words in Chinese.
+NeCacaluXuxultic and also if you don't pronounce the tones right you'll always end up sounding like a tourist.
next time we're going to see him speaking fluent lizard.
