Very good, thanks. If I could give any criticism (as someone who speaks very little chinese but am learning), it would be great if you could say it in normal speed like how you would in a conversation. You really enunciate the words. Which is great of course, but spoken by a native like on the streets or at the club or just in any "out and about" setting, I imagine they would speak it faster/less clear, no? I get that I just can say it faster myself, but as a beginner it would still be appreciated to hear you speak it in normal speed just one time like at the end of the video or something. Like after 1:13 it would be perfect to include because you already enunciated the words the whole video.

I'm Italian American, Swedish and black, but I grew up around a lot of Chinese Americans who spoke Cantonese. I'm still working on learning mandarin, but it's not easy. Speaking with people seems to help the most. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Maybe a short video to teach how to say the fifth tone would be a good idea? Thank you very much for all the great contents!

Great video. 会and 能 is more like do and can, the meaning can shift a little bit depends on the situation and the tone you use when using it.

If someone says something to me in English and I want them to say it again, but in Mandarin....how do I say that in Mandarin. Basically I want to say "Say it again in Mandarin"

    • @larryrobersonjr

@Rebecca from ChinesePod Team This is perfect! Thanks so much. The context here is that my son is learning Mandarin in school and knows many words/sentences. I feel he should practice saying things in Mandarin daily, so that it becomes more natural for him. So he will ask me something simple in English like "What day is today". He knows how to say this in Mandarin...so now and then I want to remind him to speak to me in Mandarin (instead of English) so he will be in the habit of speaking that way. Thanks again!

    good video again!!!

    • @siusiutoe6470

The two sentences are not the same.
      會 also means know 懂
      Do you know Chinese?
你會說中文嗎? is similar to Do you know how to speak Chinese?
I know you know how to speak Chinese, but now
      can you speak Chinese?
你可以(跟我)説中文嗎? is similar to(Can you speak Chinese?)
In a word, in different situations, the two sentences are not the same.

会 means ‘can’ but it is only used if you ‘can do something because you learned it’. For example: 我会游泳。= I can swim (because I learned how to do it). 可以 also means can/may but it is used to ask permission for something, for example: 我可以照照片吗?“Can I take a photo?” ( Am I allowed to take a photo? Is it okay if I take a photo?)

Yeah, the other guys have got it.
会 is can for learnt abilities only
可以 is more for permission or it could be for light suggestions or requests. I gather ifyou WERE to ask someone '你可以說中文嗎', it is like asking someone 'could you speak Chinese?' maybe due to them not understanding whatever other language is spoken.

Nice video, but how to pronounce the fifth tone?

    • @kalinsapotato
      @kalinsapotato 5 років тому

The fifth tone is also known as the light tone or just as toneless. It's really just like a short first tone, no real emphasis.

well, this is a nice video. But I guess if you teach them how to say “我不太会说中文” is better since they may use it more often than “你会说中文吗”.
