Thank you so much for this! I want to learn Chinese but I was so overwhelmed by the amount of resources and didn't know where to start, this video came at the right time!
In brief: The video is a comprehensive guide on how to learn Mandarin Chinese effectively, focusing on various resources and strategies that can be used at different levels of proficiency. Here's a summary: 1. **Beginner Level (HSK1-2):** The video suggests starting with the HSK1-2 vocabulary list and using apps like Anki for flashcards. It also recommends using Du Chinese and The Chairman's Bao for reading practice, and HelloChinese for grammar and speaking practice. 2. **Intermediate Level (HSK3-4):** At this level, the video suggests using ChinesePod and MandarinBean for listening practice. These platforms offer podcasts discussing interesting topics about everyday life in China. For grammar, the video recommends focusing more on sentence structure and grammar rules. 3. **Upper Intermediate Level (HSK5):** The video recommends watching Chinese TV series and advanced news, as well as listening to advanced podcasts. It suggests shows like "Growing Pains" and "Friends" in Chinese, and a series called "Nothing But Thirty" for insights into Chinese society and youth life. It also recommends continuing to practice writing and vocabulary building. 4. **Advanced Level (HSK6):** At this level, immersion is key. The video suggests exploring Chinese content consumed by native speakers. It recommends a documentary about Chinese food called "A Bite of China", a debate show called "Qipashuo", and a talk show called "Tuōkǒuxiù Dàhuì". It also suggests using World Wide Radio to listen to various Chinese radio stations. The video emphasizes that learning Mandarin can be challenging, but with passion, discipline, and consistency, one can achieve remarkable results. It also provides a link to a Discord group where learners can access a PDF of the study plan and a full list of resources.
Thank you Zoe!!! This is incredibly helpful, I am trying to avoid forgetting the Chinese I struggled so hard to learn, because now I don't have many chances to use it. Forever grateful!
I've been learning Chinese since last December and only planned to go up to HSK 4 but this makes me want to go just a little bit further! Thank you for sharing entertainment, not just learning resources
Thank you, Zoe, for your incredible study plans and resources to learn China. I found your channel just tonight and I'm glad to take notes from your video. I've always been captivated by the Chinese culture and growing up watching classical Chinese kung fu movies and making friends on the internet inspires me more! Xie xie nin!
World Wide Radio has been a must in my journey, I have used it for more than a year it helps my ears get trained to chinese tones and also helps me be a little I touch with daily topics, sometimes I can understand full sentences and it feels so good to be able to understand mandarín.
As a beginner of just a few weeks, this is an incredible resource, thanks so much! Easy explanations and a fantastic amount of linked resources, just amazing!!
I can thank You Tube's algorithm for leading me to the right place, judging by the number of views this video has received in just a few days. The main problem with any language learning these days is not the lack of resources, but simply information overload. Everyone has their own resources, their own plans, their own teaching ideas. "Explain this to me like I am an 8 year old" is exactly right. I need structure to try to learn Mandarin. I'm an algorithmic thinker. I prefer step-by-step instructions. It's hard to digest all of the information when there are just so many different teaching ideas out there. Also, it's easy to say "just do what works for you" except that I don't know what will work for me. I've never done this before. A comprehensive, structured plan is what I need else I'll just wander around aimlessly trying different things with no idea if they will be helpful or not.
Thank you for this complete and detailed breakdown of how to start learning Mandarin! Where I live we do not have much ressources but I will definitely be able to start thanks to your video!
This video is very resourceful ! Thank you for taking the time to put everything together. Really appreciate it :) Looking forward to more videos entailing practical tips like this on your channel :)

Thank you Zoe, for this excellent video. I found your channel after watching your equivalent videos helping Chinese native speakers with language learning (and subsequently finding your bilibili channel with other great content!). Videos from your Chinese channel is actually study material for me! As a Chinese language learner, I have spent around four years of daily study (working up to several hours each day) using the techniques very similar to what you describe in your one of your Chinese language video. As a non native speaker, one clarification I feel is important to share with other learners is that at the existing HSK6 level, despite its designation as advanced, it is really far, far away from fluency. In the new HSK system, this level is classified as upper intermediate, which I agree with. The total vocabulary of 5000 words is just far too small to understand a wide range of topics. I have studied over 13000 words and idioms and can honestly say that I frequently still encounter words I have never seen (although in many situations, I can guess) and can say confidently some of the shows you recommend are likely to be a challenge for even people that can pass HSK6 easily. I have tried watching the comedy show you recommend, and can say that still confounds me, and have put it off because it is simply too difficult. I find many Chinese language learners grossly underestimate the amount of work needed to achieve fluency. I am by no means trying to discourage people, but just set realistic expectations. The existing HSK system really gives learners a false impression of what is really needed to be considered advanced, let alone fluent. This is why I agree the most important part to achieving success is consistency and cultivating a strong learning habit that keeps you motivated. Thank you for your videos, and keep up the great work!
I watched this video yesterday and I wake up thinking about it, this video is amazing, you give to us all the necessary to learn your native language whit an energy that causes motivation to others, thank you so much for your videos, your channel has been changing my point of view about the language learning in an incredible way 😊. This motivates me so much!!. I speak Mandarin with my parents at home and sound like a native with the grammar intrinsically understood. But I can't read and write, and there's lots of moments in conversations where I cannot find the right words to explain the concept in Mandarin. Day to day conversations are fine but anything about politics, philosophy or any complicated topics starts to get tricky and I basically speak broken Mandarin with English. It feels satisfying watching this as someone who's thinking - a lot of the challenges to learning Mandarin that apply to foreigners don't apply to me!!!
I have studied English humor for many years. I have created a lot of videos to teach Chinese in a graphic and humorous way. The examples given in the teaching include Chinese humor or English humor.
Ah man, I freakin love Cantonese, but resources aren't as available as Mandarin which is very sad and just steers away learners in their first few months of studying

I've been placed in a school where it teaches students Chinese and I've been in it for almost 7 years and still, I know almost nothing, even all other students I know. Looking back, the pressure the school put me to, made it look at Chinese as just a subject I need to pass and no actual learning. Add it to the fact nothing else interested my young self to learn despite really wanting to underatand. My parents just thought putting me in the school would make me fluent, not knowing how the process works. I'm blessed enough to know some major details about Chinese but that's about it.
I just want to share that at first, I really struggled with learning Vietnamese. But as soon as I downloaded Immersive Translate to my web browser, that’s when everything changed. I started using it to translate web pages and documents, and slowly began to use it every day to watch Netflix. Once I integrated it into my daily routine, suddenly, I began to get better and better in reading and writing and speaking Vietnamese. I’m quite pleased with the results and couldn’t be happier.
I actually am learning off of 2 apps. One app helps me learn the pin yin and hanzi. The other app helps me speak what I've learned and pronunciate the language. I have chinese speakers that correct me on a daily basis. In 2 months, i have been conversational to order food, ask where i can find an item, ask how their day is going. And, no, its not through xiaomanyc
Update to my learning... I started 5 months ago using busuu and pimsleur. Busuu is good to start, but has a steep learning curve as it gets goes from wading in the shallow end of a pool to just jumping in the deep end. Pimsleur is more focused on listening and repeating what you're hearing. Currently, I added duolingo, tutor Lily AI. Duolingo makes it fun by adding incentives, and the AI is good at speaking to it and seeing if you're developing pronunciation. I use flash cards and also write chinese using hsk workbooks. I'm currently around 400 characters 5 months in. I'm more of a visual learner, so this helps visualize what I hear and speak. I am also going to begin schooling in three months. Also, it helps to watch kids shows and beginning chinese dramas for foreigners

When we learn another language, always helpful is to find reference grammars as books or websites in language to learn & in 1st language to compare point by point both. Caution some words, phrases--- each language use different no.s of words. Caution---unique words can only use explanations, not translations. These need sentences, paragraphs, articles websutes, books etc. at times. Examples---Chinese yin yang, English hip (Adj), etc.

I've watched hundreds of Mandarin Chinese for beginners videos and this one was explained best to me.
So true, the excess information just has people going around in circles
Thank you for this complete and detailed breakdown of how to start learning Mandarin! Where I live we do not have much ressources but I will definitely be able to start thanks to your video!

Thank you Zoe. Lots of excellent and practical advice about learning Chinese. One of the best reviews of resources I have seen on You Tube.

Thanks for the excellent resource suggestions! I also like John Wang's videos on the Espresso Chinese UA-cam channel where he covers the HSK books 1-3. He's very entertaining to watch! He also covers the Integrated Chinese textbooks for anyone using those to study. I find it so much easier to learn from a textbook when I have an instructor to go over each chapter with native pronunciation.

As a heritage Cantonese speaker, who is looking to improve Mandarin speaking and comprehension skills, I want to thank you.

I have chinese speakers that correct me on a daily basis.
In 2 months, i have been conversational to order food, ask where i can find an item, ask how their day is going.
And, no, its not through xiaomanyc
Can you tell the app name cause I'm searching for good apps
Hi do u mind sharing wht apps did u use? Both that u mentioned? I just started learning chinese for a week so it would be greatly help me!
Why would you not share the apps😮
This is so helpful!❤ It is difficult learning a new language without sufficient materials but you have provided a lot of quality content. The in-depth explanation of everything is greatly appreciated! Zoe you are amazing!
When we learn another language, always
helpful is to find reference grammars
as books or websites in language to learn & in 1st language to compare
point by point both.
Caution some words, phrases--- each language use different no.s of words.
Caution---unique words can only use
explanations, not translations. These need sentences, paragraphs, articles
websutes, books etc. at times.
Examples---Chinese yin yang, English hip
(Adj), etc.
