I've thought a lot about world-record largemouth... @holdengamble9776 I used to work for the Indiana DNR. I left several years ago and now work in the Auto industry in Detroit, but I've kept up with things. To answer your question about Georgia and Texas, it's very difficult to say. But consider this; A 10+ pound largemouth bass is about a 1 in 30,000,000 fish occurance. Most years in most waters, largemouth bass do not successfully reproduce. In order to simply maintain a stable population, bass need to successfully spawn about 3 out of 10 years, on average. If a certain lake has conditions that allow for more frequent spawning success, then there is potential for population growth. The average, healthy, spawning female largemouth will lay about 20,000 in a good spawn year, 90% of those will hatch (18,000), but only 50% of those fry will survive to see their 1st birthday (9,000). Of those 9,000 bass, only 50% have the potential to hit 10 pounds because males simply don't get that big, so now we have 4,500 fish with 10 pound potential, but here's where the numbers really start dropping off... A two pound bass requires twice the food of a one pounder just to survive, let alone grow larger... A four pounder requires twice as much as a two pounder and so on... Each lake only has so much nutrient capacity, and that can get eaten up by a few big bass or a bunch of little ones. This is where stunted populations come in, you could have all the reproductive capacity you dream of, but if a bunch of small bass eat most of the food before a few big ones do, then the big girls die off. So it can be good to have some instability in the system, from a big fish standpoint... If you have ideal growing conditions and good reproduction for long enough, you end up with a stunted population of small but breeding bass. If on the other hand, you have some predators that eat small and mid-sized bass, or you have some sort of mass die-off once in a while, then you increase the likelihood that some of those females can grow big without having so much competition for food. Of course, all of this is highly variable and there are other dynamics at play as well (genetics, etc). So as far as 23 pounders in Texas or Georgia, that's kind of like asking about alien life in the milky way... There's a lot of potential, and very little evidence... There certainly COULD be, but it would be foolish to declare it with any certainty. It's also interesting to note that bass do not have a maximum size... If you were to raise a largemouth in a perfect aquarium, with ideal water chemistry, no pathogens, and plenty of easy to eat food, you could theoretically raise a bass to be several hundred pounds or more!

The bigger bass would have to eat even more than 20 times the food to continue growing... As far as food types for big bass, I haven't specifically studied or researched it, but conventional wisdom makes sense to me based on what I know about fish in general... Big predatory fish tend to get lazy if they can. It costs a big bass a lot more energy to chase prey, so Big Bertha isn't likely to chase a 4" bluegill for 20 feet to eat it, but she might chase an 8" bluegill. Also, she won't pass up an easy meal no matter what it is, so if you drop a finesse worm on her nose, she's taking it even though it's small. It's just too easy, and she needs every calorie she can get. It helps to think about the idealized life-cycle of a big bass. Let's say we have a hypothetical lake somewhere in the middle of the country, the lake provides good largemouth bass habitat with sufficient forage and suitable climate and we magically have no diseases or pollution (just to simplify). We follow a newly hatched largemouth as she grows... In her first year she has little trouble eating plankton and she manages to avoid being eaten unlike half of her siblings. Year two, she's bigger, but still small, she continues eating plankton, but also insects and small crayfish, she begins to grow more rapidly because of the ability to target larger prey. The larger she gets, the less likely she is to be eaten and her odds of surviving year to year increase. By the time she's 8 or 9 years old, she's in her prime, well over 5 pounds at this point and maintaining energy isn't too difficult. But her growth begins to slow, because more of the nutrition she does get has to go into maintaining her metabolism, leaving less to be used for growth. Eventually she will grow to the point that every calorie she gets has to be used to keep her heart pumping...But the caloric requirements to swim and chase prey go up with body size too... The day she falls a calorie short of maintaining her body's energy needs is the day she starves to death.

Ive boated 3 over 8 and many over seven, but jumping to a 10+ is another level. Territorial bass observations, Bass Sense of smell and scent on lures, angles, and fishing observations learned from crossing over from fishing other species, are bass particularly fond of one type of forage? Trout eaters, craw eaters shad eaters, etc. Only? Do they change as they grow in diet? Once they hit a size do they change to a favorite forage? Patterns and techniques? Natural patterns? Weather for bigs? Do bass snack on small forage often and eat big food once in a while? Skittish bass? Roamers? Tagging fish? Fish that are big that have never been caught vs bigs that have been caught multiple times. Timing and seasonal fishing for WR bass. Baits over 12". What BIWA forage is the WR most likely eating? Bass sense of taste. Territorial markings on home areas? Multiple spawns through the year? Waves of spawning? Temperature effects on growth? Depth? Eye size was interesting.

Awesome discussion. It made me think about the importance of understanding all the things bass eat and their behaviors. Bluegill, Shad, Crawfish, Crappie, Carp etc. Bass behavior is based on feeding on them, so understanding bait fish is just as important in a sense. For example a Bass likes to live by a dock post, why do Bluegills continue to go by the dock post enough for a Bass to live there and eat. Just a random thought haha

A majority of the all time top 10 bass were caught on live baits. Manabu Kurita used a blue gill and Bob Crupi used live crawdads. The rest were caught on beds like Dotty excluding the snagging from Mike Long.
Man what a great episode!! I was blessed last winter with a 10lber and it was unreal the size. I caught a couple others in the 8lb class and those looked like double digit bass. It is so crazy to see these big girls on your deck. 🔥 content

All my fish were released by the way, had a replica done of my PB by American Fish Taxidermy, they custom paint to your photos, made to correct size. It looks amazing & exactly like my fish. I couldn't imagine killing a fish like that for a mount. They deserve to live & keep spawning to keep those genes going for future big bass

I was so impressed you this video I had to watch it again. I’ve always been impressed with Jeff and his demeanor. I’ve lived in Az my whole life 60+ years and hunted & fished since 10 yrs old. Back in the 1970s , 1980s & early 90s. There was a lot of big fish taken , a lot came from Roosevelt , Saugro , Canyon etc. Then Alamo was such a incredible like the fish back in those days. But I always thought Canyon could really produce some monster bass. But I mentioned I’ve hunted , basically we’re stalking the Bass. The trophy Elk , deer , Antelope , bass didn’t get big by being stupid. Really enjoyed this video.

I’m just shooting for a ten pounder. I don’t really get to travel more than a couple hours from home, so I have to stick to what I can find in western Washington. I see pics of ten plus pounders from this state every year, so I know it’s possible. They’re definitely pretty smart fish here.
Did some research turns out FFS uses the same sonar technology as an old School flasher. Just the user interface and how we read the data is different. So the “Beams” that are hitting the fish are the same old deal that our grandparents used to cath’em. The black box that connects to the FFS transducer diagnosis the sonar into a live image to your 15” screens.

How do you feel about Roosevelt producing a record? Its been 8 years since florida strain have been stocked. Has tons of feed stock. Or even any of the salt river lakes getting getting fish drawn down the system. I have even heard of 7-8 pounders coming out of TTL just after the big flow of water we had over the summer.
Check out, if you haven’t already, John Hope’s book Tracking Trophies. Granted it’s mostly fish in Texas lakes and it was a minutes ago, what his research reveals is interesting to say the least. Bill Murphy also references a tracking study. We all know that multiple variables are in place all the time but actual data, regardless of where and when, is valuable. Hope talks about how most big fish (over 7 lbs) are in fact flush feeders and NOT big fat lazy bitches laying in ambush. Great vid and discussion either way. When Geoff was talking about the spinnerbait not looking like anything, i wonder if the bites come from the fish being territorial and hit the bait out of territoriality. Its not like they can punch out an intruder
I believe like us, fish have a fight or flight mentality. I would like to think that there are calm, calculated, and cautious giants. Then there are extremely aggressive fighters in the giant class as well. It's something I have seen across many species in the animal kingdom and not just predators either, I have seen it in deer and non predatory bird as well.
Could you imagine having that fish just within your reach and it throws the bait. My PB 11-3 did that (straightened the hooks) and I went back the next day and caught her in the same area about 20 yards from the day before.
If the World record bass is caught using FFS should there be an astract in the record books to note that it was caught using FFS technology or should there not be any mention of the FFS was used, just curious what others think about this.
Jeff doesn't have to move to Japan to get a shot a WR...he can just move to Idaho and start fishing dworshak reservoir. Thats where the next WR is going to be caught
Fish are smart to an extent and they're creatures of their environment, but at the same time, i think we humans give them more credit than what they really are intellectual wise.
Yep Anthropomorphism. Humans do it to animals very regularly. Bass generally hit based on reaction strikes or when they get annoyed by a bait. It is action and reaction. Purely instinctual and the fish are not setup to do much more than that.
Huge luck factor for both the fisherman and the bass. Personally don't think giant bass are any smarter than mid-sized bass - this is a misconception I believe. Giant bass are much more rare - much more difficult to find because of their super low numbers, and often eat much bigger meals than anglers throw. A 2lb bass will eat a 6" shad no problem. Imagine 15+lb bass often eat 1-2lb carp, or baby bass, big crappie, etc. Think of winning a lottery ticket, the winning #s are out there - record fish are out there too. I think the factor for them to get huge is right environment/forage and then just luck in terms of not being caught very frequently. As they get over 10lbs much more likely someone will keep them for mount, or keep them out of water too long, mishandle them, etc. If you have a lake with 500 bass over 10lbs, the 10 that make it over 15lbs imo are probably the ones that eluded anglers just by chance - not by smarts. The 1 out of those 10 that approach 20lbs lucked out even further in terms of eluding anglers and or just having superior genetics.
I've always wondered why a spinnerbait or a senko work- they look nothing like the forage I imagine them eating. Swimbaits, too. It's crazy that they eat a giant piece of wood or plastic with hooks the size of their eyeballs or bigger. Fucked if they don't catch fish though.
Also look into this, I found an article 2 years ago when I first moved down here to southern SC of a man named Roy Greer catching a 22lb 7oz in 2021 here in SC. I found the same article again. It says the fish was weighed by Fish& game & waiting on certification for new world record. The article has pictures & looks legit but IDK if this is article is real or not? Maybe it wasn't certified correct or was rejected? Take a look into that see what you guys think & find?
If it’s true that there are several massive, even record bass in several reservoirs, even highly pressured ones, wouldn’t there be more sightings of massive 20+ pounder dead bass that died from natural causes? Just a thought.
My family's from Mississippi and my dad was lucky and smart enough to hunt these trophy fish in our two public lakes before a lot of other people. He really wanted the record on our local lake and caught 200 over 10lbs but someone caught a 17lb bass in the early 2000's and he gave up after that. His pb to this day is 14lbs which is still a monster bass imo. Caught almost all of them on normal tackle and zoom worms. Can't imagine going for a fish over 20lbs that's an insane challenge. yeah it’s crazy the difference from a 7-8; to a fish that’s 10+. I’ve been blessed this year with multiple fish over 7 and two over 9. but when I saw the 11.3 I caught, it didn’t even look like a normal bass. it’s like looking at a dinosaur. great episode boys. Merry Christmas!🎄🎁
As You know you cant see all the stimuli that you are presenting to the specimen vibration, pigments, bending of uv lights, shapes & other polarity's coming together to produce a corny saying harminoy the system of water is you chalk board & your devising a strategy with no fingers. I do find it fascinating to see a fish eat a bottle cap, then a lure. we also assume the role the species plays in that eco system in addition to the one you bring to the table it produces a different scenario every time as we already know good show to let the lines hold are critical concerns.
You are going to hunt big girl at night time hours early and late . Got some monsters at night time. I think the biggest ones feed at night . It is a different approach to the hole thing keep a open mind and go for it. Don't let th darkness mess with you . Have had great success at it and way less pressure at that time there is one of the problems solved you need to over come to get what your goals are. If you are going for it no forward shit at all that is not going to work for you do it just fishing natural it will mean more to you and the fishing community no one can talk shit on you for using it. It can be done with out no doubt. Late.

I was so impressed you this video I had to watch it again. I’ve always been impressed with Jeff and his demeanor. I’ve lived in Az my whole life 60+ years and hunted & fished since 10 yrs old. Back in the 1970s , 1980s & early 90s. There was a lot of big fish taken , a lot came from Roosevelt , Saugro , Canyon etc. Then Alamo was such a incredible like the fish back in those days. But I always thought Canyon could really produce some monster bass. But I mentioned I’ve hunted , basically we’re stalking the Bass. The trophy Elk , deer , Antelope , bass didn’t get big by being stupid. Really enjoyed this video.

I’m just shooting for a ten pounder. I don’t really get to travel more than a couple hours from home, so I have to stick to what I can find in western Washington. I see pics of ten plus pounders from this state every year, so I know it’s possible. They’re definitely pretty smart fish here.

Did some research turns out FFS uses the same sonar technology as an old
School flasher. Just the user interface and how we read the data is different. So the “Beams” that are hitting the fish are the same old deal that our grandparents used to cath’em. The black box that connects to the FFS transducer diagnosis the sonar into a live image to your 15” screens.

How do you feel about Roosevelt producing a record? Its been 8 years since florida strain have been stocked. Has tons of feed stock. Or even any of the salt river lakes getting getting fish drawn down the system. I have even heard of 7-8 pounders coming out of TTL just after the big flow of water we had over the summer.

Check out, if you haven’t already, John Hope’s book Tracking Trophies. Granted it’s mostly fish in Texas lakes and it was a minutes ago, what his research reveals is interesting to say the least. Bill Murphy also references a tracking study. We all know that multiple variables are in place all the time but actual data, regardless of where and when, is valuable. Hope talks about how most big fish (over 7 lbs) are in fact flush feeders and NOT big fat lazy bitches laying in ambush.

When Geoff was talking about the spinnerbait not looking like anything, i wonder if the bites come from the fish being territorial and hit the bait out of territoriality. Its not like they can punch out an intruder
I believe like us, fish have a fight or flight mentality. I would like to think that there are calm, calculated, and cautious giants. Then there are extremely aggressive fighters in the giant class as well. It's something I have seen across many species in the animal kingdom and not just predators either, I have seen it in deer and non predatory bird as well.
Could you imagine having that fish just within your reach and it throws the bait. My PB 11-3 did that (straightened the hooks) and I went back the next day and caught her in the same area about 20 yards from the day before.

i know a couple lakes in cali that aren't southern cali that no one talks about that could have the world record
If the World record bass is caught using FFS should there be an astract in the record books to note that it was caught using FFS technology or should there not be any mention of the FFS was used, just curious what others think about this.
Jeff doesn't have to move to Japan to get a shot a WR...he can just move to Idaho and start fishing dworshak reservoir. Thats where the next WR is going to be caught

Fish are smart to an extent and they're creatures of their environment, but at the same time, i think we humans give them more credit than what they really are intellectual wise.
Yep Anthropomorphism. Humans do it to animals very regularly. Bass generally hit based on reaction strikes or when they get annoyed by a bait. It is action and reaction. Purely instinctual and the fish are not setup to do much more than that.
Huge luck factor for both the fisherman and the bass. Personally don't think giant bass are any smarter than mid-sized bass - this is a misconception I believe. Giant bass are much more rare - much more difficult to find because of their super low numbers, and often eat much bigger meals than anglers throw. A 2lb bass will eat a 6" shad no problem. Imagine 15+lb bass often eat 1-2lb carp, or baby bass, big crappie, etc. Think of winning a lottery ticket, the winning #s are out there - record fish are out there too. I think the factor for them to get huge is right environment/forage and then just luck in terms of not being caught very frequently. As they get over 10lbs much more likely someone will keep them for mount, or keep them out of water too long, mishandle them, etc. If you have a lake with 500 bass over 10lbs, the 10 that make it over 15lbs imo are probably the ones that eluded anglers just by chance - not by smarts. The 1 out of those 10 that approach 20lbs lucked out even further in terms of eluding anglers and or just having superior genetics.
Unfortunately, I live in an area where anything over 5lbs is considered "big".....😢
I've always wondered why a spinnerbait or a senko work- they look nothing like the forage I imagine them eating. Swimbaits, too. It's crazy that they eat a giant piece of wood or plastic with hooks the size of their eyeballs or bigger. Fucked if they don't catch fish though.
Also look into this, I found an article 2 years ago when I first moved down here to southern SC of a man named Roy Greer catching a 22lb 7oz in 2021 here in SC. I found the same article again. It says the fish was weighed by Fish& game & waiting on certification for new world record. The article has pictures & looks legit but IDK if this is article is real or not? Maybe it wasn't certified correct or was rejected? Take a look into that see what you guys think & find?

Hey man, you need to go chase your dream. I think almost everybody has regrets of not doing something they wanted to do when they were younger.
If it’s true that there are several massive, even record bass in several reservoirs, even highly pressured ones, wouldn’t there be more sightings of massive 20+ pounder dead bass that died from natural causes? Just a thought.
My family's from Mississippi and my dad was lucky and smart enough to hunt these trophy fish in our two public lakes before a lot of other people. He really wanted the record on our local lake and caught 200 over 10lbs but someone caught a 17lb bass in the early 2000's and he gave up after that. His pb to this day is 14lbs which is still a monster bass imo. Caught almost all of them on normal tackle and zoom worms. Can't imagine going for a fish over 20lbs that's an insane challenge. yeah it’s crazy the difference from a 7-8; to a fish that’s 10+. I’ve been blessed this year with multiple fish over 7 and two over 9. but when I saw the 11.3 I caught, it didn’t even look like a normal bass. it’s like looking at a dinosaur.

As You know you cant see all the stimuli that you are presenting to the specimen vibration, pigments, bending of uv lights, shapes & other polarity's coming together to produce a corny saying harminoy the system of water is you chalk board & your devising a strategy with no fingers. I do find it fascinating to see a fish eat a bottle cap, then a lure. we also assume the role the species plays in that eco system in addition to the one you bring to the table it produces a different scenario every time as we already know good show to let the lines hold are critical concerns.
You are going to hunt big girl at night time hours early and late . Got some monsters at night time. I think the biggest ones feed at night . It is a different approach to the hole thing keep a open mind and go for it. Don't let th darkness mess with you . Have had great success at it and way less pressure at that time there is one of the problems solved you need to over come to get what your goals are. If you are going for it no forward shit at all that is not going to work for you do it just fishing natural it will mean more to you and the fishing community no one can talk shit on you for using it. It can be done with out no doubt. Late.
Dude the night is where it's at, and during the warmer months of the year the bigger fish definitely hunt more at night.
