The song I read that it was a goodbye. Is there a connection to Jolene? I mean her man cheating with some other woman and that's why these two songs and the goodbye at the same day?
That’s because she wrote it for her one-time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, from whom she was separating professionally after a seven-year partnership
Just a slight correction. She said, "People just think of me as a dumb blonde. Well, I'm not really dumb & not really a blonde either." Her literacy campaign sends any & EVERY child who's parent signs them up a book every month (FOR FREE!) from birth to kindergarten. She's a national treasure in my book!
Best part of this story is that her and Porter Wagner, whom she wrote this song for, had a falling out afterward and he was pretty terrible to her. Years later he was in major financial trouble and the IRS seized all his property, including his entire song catalogue. Dolly went to the IRS auction and purchased the entire catalogue, then gave it back to him for free. Shows that she truly meant every word of this song!

She wrote this for Porter Wagoner. She didn't know how to tell him she was leaving the show, so instead, she sang it to him in his office. Throughout the years, he sued her, to which she just responded by giving him a million dollars and continued to care for him. He blew all the money by partying, and tried to sue her again for a catalogue of music she owned. Instead of getting mad and fighting it, Dolly just said, "You can have it all for free". She took care of that man for decades, despite how awful he was to her, and she even went to his death bed and sang to him, holding his hand and keeping him company. This is the essence of unconditional love and the story of her great character. When she said, "I Will Always Love You", she meant it. Dolly is the writer of this beautiful song. She wrote it for her mentor Porter Waggner. She sings it from her heart to him as she made her exit from his show. Elvis Presley wanted to purchase the rights to this song and Dolly said no. This song wasn't for sale not even to the King. Smart move for a Blonde Beauty. Love you Dolly!
dolly turn down to elvis becouse he wanted 50% of all sales while most right were 10%--20% she made right decision, dolly is no dummy she business smart.
For many years everyone wondered who Dolly wrote this song for. It was many years later during a reunion that she confessed it was written for Porter Waggoner who gave Dolly her start on a national stage. Dolly is very talented and is also a very smart business woman.
My dad had this 45 back in the day. I have always loved this, and listening to it now, I still get goosebumps. No one has ever done Dolly's songs better than Dolly. No one.
Whitney sang it like a true diva. With the vocal pipes on 100 and the Hollywood Glam. Dolly sang it from her heart. You can feel the bitterness in her voice. That's her real life issues she put on this track. Both versions are really good.
Dolly did in fact write this song. She wrote it for Porter Wagoner. She wrote it for him because he was having a hard time letting her venture out on her own after performing with him for 5 years. It was written as a professional breakup song not romantically.
I think Whitney did it better, as you can tell by the sells. Whitney made it famous. Clearly Whitney's version has way more vocals and is also way harder to sing so I would say no one can sing this song like Whitney. Dolly even said that.
+Slay Queen That is just another opinion, nothing more. Justin Bieber sold a crap ton of records but his music is cheap pop garbage. Sales number do no automatically reflect the quality of music. They are usually a result of popularity, which is a result of which artists are chosen by the record companies to get the most airtime. That is how it typically works in the industry.
I didn't know this song was from Dolly Parton until today... In my opinion, Witney sings this song with passion and power, wich is great because shows her vocals strenght, and thus makes the song more remarkable, but on the other hand, Dolly sings with such tenderness that made the lyrics go much deeper. I never really cared for the lyrics at all, just to the way Witney sings them, but listening to Dolly almost made me cry! I love Witney, but this is another level right here...
Dolly's version I feel is from the heart, well a broken one. It's so sad and bittersweet. Whitney gave the song a rather different meaning. I like both, but it's only through Dollys version that you really hear the words. Whitney brought the power, the diva and such an amazing voice, but Dollys version is so much more human and honest.
+Ben Wilson I feels from the heart because it IS..read up on it! Porter wanted her to stay...for the money..Dolly had to leave for her own sake! it's the best song, in my opinion, ever written, due to real feelings and events!
+Lee Boy If you read up on the story of this song you'll find out she IS singing to someone-Porter Wagoner who didn't want Dolly to leave his show..after all she was making him a lot of money. So she wrote this song especially AT and FOR him. :)
Always appreciated Whitney’s powerful and beautiful voice in her version, but I rly understood the true bittersweet tender feeling behind dollys original
This song is depressing when you hear about backstory. Whitney Houston just covered the song. Dolly Parton lived the song. When she said “i will always love you” to Porter Wagnor, she meant it. It just heartbreaking that Wagnor couldn't realize how lucky he was to have Dolly Parton in his life.
Dolly is an amazing person. She supported that man throughout his whole life, no matter how nasty he ever got, because she promised to always love him, so she did.
Wow Amazing . Never knew that this was dollys song first but , damn Whitney made this song everlasting . Unbelievable performance by both . The lyrics are deep rooted
I love both versions equally - they're both interpreted in such different ways they feel like two different songs. Whitney's version is almost a bold proclamation with confidence while Dolly's feels more personal and vulnerable - like someone broken. How amazing that we have two amazing versions by two incredible women to represent different emotions depending on where we all are at a specific time in our lives. We should just be grateful rather than bitch about whose is better.
Kate C I agree. You can't compare two emotions. Whitney's is supposed to be empowering, and Dolly's is all about exposing and vulnerability. Its like comparing Pasta with Pizza and George RR Martin with Tolkein. Both extremely good in what they're doing and very different works.
that is true.. but whitney's version is too powerful she unleashes her voice on us and it's overwhelming.. i like the point about the interpretation. whitney's version is much more declarative like she's asserting her love.. whereas dolly's is softer and is either a fading reminder to someone who forgot.. or an almost painful elegy to her beloved :'( fucking beautiful
A lot of people sadden about the fact that her being the original singer is very little known but let's not forget she wrote the song and agreed to the cover. Its success is hers forever. I mean, just in terms of royalties +_+
@@gdxd7956 She credits that song with Porter finally letting her out of the various contracts and obligations which he held over; that allowed her to take the next steps of her career and leave him behind. Check out Dolly Parton's America podcasts

@@ajollypanda4175 yeah I really don't understand why people get annoyed by the fact Dolly doesn't get credited for the song. Like she don't mind she just wants her cash, and I mean damn right she should that is a beautiful song!
Dolly wanted Elvis to record this song, but he said he wouldn’t be giving any credit or money to Parton. So at the end she decided to release it herself
Technically it was his manager/producer who said that Elvis would like to record the song but before he would agree to do it he would require a 50% ownership/royalties of the song. I am glad that she stuck to her guns and said no. To be honest I don’t think it really would have suited him.
Dolly Wrote "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" in 1972 and was the first to record both songs. This video was in 1973 when she was leaving the Porter Wagoner Show, which was the first time heard. I am that old to remember that.
Her voice is so soft and pure. She’s so cute. I love both versions but I think I like this one better than Whitney’s because of the 60’s feel. They both sound amazing and they’re both queens.
That is a fun analysis. I was thinking too how much I appreciated seeing our history through seeing Dolly at this time. Of course the 90s were an important part of our history too, and the decade would have been nothing without Whitney's version. But it's fun to see the 60s and 70s through this. Her hair is the best part!
Anthony McIvor . She is a knock out in this era. Also very intelligent you can't write songs and not be a creative thinker. Complete package. With her good looks I always wondered why she uses wigs.
Lia Vazquez Dolly Parton ALLOWED her to use HER song she made for porter Wagner and sang to him when he was dying. Whitney had a good COVER, but this more about the pain of moving on instead of Whitney’s which is more of a silent “I won’t forget you”
twistknit1 she wrote it so she could leave because porter wouldn’t listen, but on his death bed she sang this to him. She also returned the studio she purchased to get out of his contract, saying it was one of her biggest regrets, hurting him like that. She had to purchase it cause he kept claiming a lot of her property and other funds were his under the studio, so she purchased and later returned it with this songs original lyric sheet on top of the return paper.
Who else looked up this song, and “Jolene” when you found out she wrote both songs on the same day. Holy crap, that revelation gives a ton of perspective to both songs in conjunction.
Orion625 I love both songs and only learned today listening to ep 2 of the Dolly Parton’s America podcast that she wrote both on the SAME DAY! Wow. Just wow!
@@llawrence4834 She didn't say that. She corrected herself to say her home demo's of the songs were both on the same tape, so they must have been written close to each other, but not necessarily the same day.
Jolene wasn’t about her. She wrote the song after a woman on her show told her that her husband left her for another woman and they where all at the same show
They are they same song. No matter how much you say you like both equally, deep down you know you like one version better than the other. It is a literal (yes literal, I am using that word as intended) impossibility to like both songs equally.
We compare them because Whitney (good riddance) gets credit for the song. Sure, she sang okay, but it's like saying a Beatles tribute band is as good as The Beatles. Sorry, dude. It's not.
Saw her live yesterday, and her voice is still as strong, pure and pitch perfect as ever. This is before autotune, so there was no cheating allowed. She's the real deal, and at 70 is still a force on stage.... an adorable, humble, and straight-talking one!
@@zusiphesikayi2390 Funeral perhaps but if you know the context of the song and read the lyrics, it's about expressing unconditional love while making the choice to remove yourself from their life. Unconditional love, good sentiment for a wedding, removing yourself...not so much.
If my granddaddy was not absolutely in love with Dolly Parton when I was little girl, I probably wouldn't know that she sung this first either. He had all of her albums, we even played with paper dolls of Dolly that came with one of his albums, lol.
Being the Whitney fanatic that I am, I must say that I love *both versions!!* Dolly you wrote & sang one of the most *beautiful songs ever!* Thank you!
I Always preferred this one to Whitneys. She made 50 million with this song - thanks to everybody who has covered it. She wrote it in one evening together with Jolene. It just poured out. Now - that's talent.
the power is IN her subtlety.....dolly can belt it out, and her range is awesome, but its not about how loud one can sign....I love Whitney's version, not doubt about her power...., but I love Dolly's more...classic......
Absolutely right. And unfortunately, there's not much subtlety and nuance in music anymore. I blame those awful American Idol shows for making young people believe that you're not singing unless you're screaming. THIS is true singing, putting your heart and soul into a song. Dolly is a master at that. Thank God we have artists like her. I think Kacey Musgraves is also an artist in this same style.
She did sing it like she meant it, she was breaking up with Porter and going off on her own after five years on the show with Porter. She wrote it for Porter. Dolly is an icon of the American dream..... Thank you Dolly
The day will come. It took me until I was 35 to find mine. Just be you and make sure the person your with loves you just how you are without comprimise.
Tariq Sears yeah she wrote it from the bottom of her heart for porter wagoner when she left his company to take over her own courier . pretty sad but cute.
My mom told me. I don't know how she knew, because she wasn't particularly a country/western fan, but she even knew the backstory about Dolly writing it about Porter.
As well as Whitney did with this song, I wish people gave Dolly more credit, they always refer to it as Whitney's song when it's not. Yes she sounds absolutely wonderful with this song but no one seems to ever give Dolly the credit for writing it.
+David Lightfoot I agree completely. I love them both in there own way. Whitney Houstons voice is greatest female singer of all time. And I always will remember as a kid loving here cover of this song. It wasn't it until I was older when I heard Dolly Partons and I loved it. It really depends on my mood which I would rather hear at any given time.
As a 65 yo black man, I've listened to Dolly since the 70s. She and Porter Wagoner were the deal back then for folks who love the older country music. Plus, Dolly's voice is angelic!!
There's such a sweetness and beauty to this song. The lyrics alone rip your heart out. Honestly, you have to be deaf, dumb, or blind to not appreciate this song in some way.
I love this version just as much as Whitney's...but this one has more soul to it. This is dolly's song after all. It feels like it really meant something for her.
Moha Shetty Wrong, you probably like it because it's more country-esque, or the style you like the best, but ain't no way in hell you can sit here and form words saying it has more soul than Whitney's version. Just say you liked the version that plays to your personal preference in music smh
Killer Bee stop telling people how to express their opinions. Annoying as hell. She thinks the original has more soul, you disagree. No need to get your panties in a bunch.
Why do people keep saying different versions? Dolly Parton wrote this song, it belongs to her. Whitney only covered it, beautiful but respect is due where respect is due.
Dolly has said about Whitney's version, “I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance.” And of course, her famous reply, regarding the issue of people thinking it is Whitney's song: "I don't care who gets the credit, as long as I get the cash."

I couldn’t agree more! She’s got a great voice! Wish people knew about her version more than the Whitney Houston version.
Whitney Houston made this song a hit, but Dolly Parton wrote a masterpiece.
No, Dolly made it a hit! Whitney tried to steal, but Dollys people found out and a small tussle happened, and after some money changed hands, Whitney re-recorded it!

of course she knew what it feels to leave someone.. its her feelings that she used to compose that beautiful piece.
Very smart move. She earns millions per year from this song. Otherwise elvis estate would be earning those!
.... did not know that, but krazy shit, she dissed the King's offer, Lol....
dolly turn down to elvis becouse he wanted 50% of all sales while most right were 10%--20% she made right decision, dolly is no dummy she business smart.
Dolly never sells her songs. Elvis only sings what he owns.
For many years everyone wondered who Dolly wrote this song for. It was many years later during a reunion that she confessed it was written for Porter Waggoner who gave Dolly her start on a national stage. Dolly is very talented and is also a very smart business woman.
She looks like a Barbie doll! She just radiates kindness and classiness
She is so freaking gorgeous!!! I love her :)

Whitney sang it like a true diva. With the vocal pipes on 100 and the Hollywood Glam.
Dolly sang it from her heart. You can feel the bitterness in her voice. That's her real life issues she put on this track.
Both versions are really good.
I still prefer Dolly's version. I'm Russian. Any true Russian thinks with their heart.
Thank you! We do not have to pit these two absolute icons against one another, I'm certain they would both say the same ❤
I prefer Dolly’s. It’s calming. I also prefer the instruments used in her version (guitars).
Ahmed yes! I love the guitar especially during the chorus. It’s so beautiful.
I agree. Why do people feel they need to choose if one is better?
Dolly Parton not just a great singer, but also an amazing songwriter.
she never wrote this song
tizzay7 who do you think wrote it?
Dolly did in fact write this song. She wrote it for Porter Wagoner. She wrote it for him because he was having a hard time letting her venture out on her own after performing with him for 5 years. It was written as a professional breakup song not romantically.
I didn't know That , Jennifer ...Ty

If it wasn’t for Dollys great song, we wouldn’t have gotten Whitney’s version of this, now we have 2 beautiful versions 🖤
Whitney's rendition gives me chills. Dolly's version makes me cry. Both are versions goegeous, but no one can sing song this like Dolly.

Slay Queen Whitney’s version isn’t emotional. She didn’t write the song, she just made money off of it. Dolly’s version is heartfelt.
@@d.k6721 but Whitney Makes no money all of it goes to dolly Whitney made it popular but dolly made the song and nobody can sing it like her
I didn't know this song was from Dolly Parton until today...
She wrote this for Porter Waggoner because she had been on the same show as him for a long time and was leaving for another network.
*whitney I’m sorry it was bothering to me
Lol
Dolly’s version always makes me cry
Whitney is NO Dolly......not even close
Dolly's version I feel is from the heart, well a broken one. It's so sad and bittersweet. Whitney gave the song a rather different meaning. I like both, but it's only through Dollys version that you really hear the words. Whitney brought the power, the diva and such an amazing voice, but Dollys version is so much more human and honest.
+Ben Wilson yes thank you in my opinion doly sings it better
+Ben Wilson I feels from the heart because it IS..read up on it! Porter wanted her to stay...for the money..Dolly had to leave for her own sake! it's the best song, in my opinion, ever written, due to real feelings and events!
It feels like Dolly is singing from her heart to someone special in her life while Whitney sounds like she's singing it to impress an audience.
+Lee Boy If you read up on the story of this song you'll find out she IS singing to someone-Porter Wagoner who didn't want Dolly to leave his show..after all she was making him a lot of money. So she wrote this song especially AT and FOR him. :)
+Ben Wilson You gave a very true, honest, truthful comment to me. That s why i gave a thumb up for you.
You don't know if Whitney "just covered" it, it's impossible to know what's in a person's heart at any point of their lives.

Katie M I know it’s amazing. I prefer Dolly’s over Whitney’s
Both extremely good in what they're doing and very different works.
that is true.. but whitney's version is too powerful she unleashes her voice on us and it's overwhelming.. i like the point about the interpretation. whitney's version is much more declarative like she's asserting her love.. whereas dolly's is softer and is either a fading reminder to someone who forgot.. or an almost painful elegy to her beloved :'(
fucking beautiful
Kate C w

Technically it was his manager/producer who said that Elvis would like to record the song but before he would agree to do it he would require a 50% ownership/royalties of the song. I am glad that she stuck to her guns and said no. To be honest I don’t think it really would have suited him.
that’s not what she said in a recent interview. she said he reached out to sing the song but she wanted Whitney to sing it.
Dolly Wrote "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" in 1972 and was the first to record both songs. This video was in 1973 when she was leaving the Porter Wagoner Show, which was the first time heard. I am that old to remember that.

That is a fun analysis. I was thinking too how much I appreciated seeing our history through seeing Dolly at this time.
