I rather real interviews like this where we get to know the person than the fluff, “nicey” stuff now. Just because someone asks you a question doesn’t mean you have to answer. Now it’s, “Tell me the story when you almost burned rice trying to cook,” “How was working with this director?” And we get phony replies.
Barbara treating Dolly like she has to justify her existence. Every question drips with elitist condescension. Dolly gave her a master class on how to behave with class and dignity.
Barbara Walters is so patronising and doesn't listen to the people she's interviewing. She's actually quite crass in this. Dolly on the other hand is a masterclass of grace and authenticity.
Barbara is just asking what a lot of people are thinking. I don't find interviewers who keep asking the same safe questions to be interesting. With that said, I admire Dolly and people who intelligently and patiently respond to questions without being defensive or maintain their professionalism with tough questions. This applies to both entertainers and people in politics.
"I would never stoop so low to be fashionable. That's the easiest thing in the world to do." Dolly Parton Dolly Parton has more grace in her little finger than Baba Walters has shown in her entire life.
Amen!! At the end it's like I feel bad for Barbara because she had an agenda and Dolly basically looked down winked at her and pinched her cheek. Dolly didn't need to say anything but everything she said here was so ABOVE any kind of fuse Barbara was trying to light. Almost as if to say look at how cute you are trying to get me to say something inappropriate. The boob questions, were just plain rude! Finally Dolly addressed it with "my figure" which was so amazingly classy. That was what has always blown me away about Dolly Parton. She was always soooo classy as to never invite any rude questions and has always been absolutely gorgeous and adorably cute. Then you hear her sing and my god it's like what I'd imagine angels sing like. And she can talk into singing better than anyone I've ever heard.
BABA WAWA does not know anything about music, and she does not care about music, and she certainly does not know anything about country & western music. The only interview that I've seen that is worse than BABA WAWA's interview of Dolly Parton, is when David Letterman interviewed Grace Slick (of Jefferson Airplane). In this interview, David Letterman trashes Grace Slick, and he puts her down, and he trashes her again. How sad.
@@jaislim5717 By the standards of the time, Dolly did look ridiculous. At the time, people reacted to her like how people reacted to Lady Gaga when she first came onto the scene. Dolly's very pretty, don't get me wrong, but you can't change the fact that that's what people thought about her. When considering an event set in a past time period, you have to analyse things from how they were. Viewing things with a modern lens will cause incorrect interpretation

My friends, we just witnessed a master class in how a classy southern lady can disarm even the most vile passive-aggressive attacks. Dolly is a national treasure.
A modern woman would've just gotten really passive aggressive or screamed or something. This interview is a perfect example of a woman who knows who she is, and is classy. Throwing temper tantrums doesn't make you "strong:
@Get 2 That is just not true. It's what you want to be true. It also lacks the grace Dolly herself is being praised for. Btw, it came out some people thought Betty White was mean. So how about we stop this thing women get saddled with, that we are either impossibly perfect saints or downright evil witches. Nothing (normal human) in between.
She’s turning everything into positivity and empowerment. Barbara is completely disarmed by this approach. Dolly is strong and secure. She’s always radiated that feminine power!

I never realized how rude Barbara Walters was until I saw this interview. Rude and disrespectful. Dolly was a gem and she handled herself like the star she is. 💕
@SonShine Oh, come on. She and all of her legacy from The View is so embarrassing. She was always trying to be holier than thou. Look at them interviewing Norm Macdonald and trying to make fun of him just as she tried with Dolly. She was always the same.
Barbara has always been that wonderful word Aussies sometimes use instead of mate. Why do you think people made fun of the way she talked? Because it's manufactured glib to imply someone high on a hierarchy, and people knew it.
But this is what many city people, especially those from the Northeast, think of people who live in rural areas. I've lived in big cities and the middle of nowhere and I'll take country people over city people every day and twice on Sunday.
@@queenbutterfly4888 you do realise Dolly Parton is a leftist right? She's openly vocal about her support for LGBT individuals and actively funded Covid-19 vaccines. Her Netflix special is pretty much the queer coded version of It's A Wonderful Life. She's also very openly supportive of transgender rights and anti discrimination. She's center left for sure but she's still a more leftist than Biden.
Dolly is one smart and classy lady. She's right that her look would get her attention, and once she had the attention, she could keep it with talent. Dolly writes her own lyrics and music. She is one of the greats.
Dolly is so in control of this interview. She never loses eye contact with Walters. Her smile is constant and her body language is a force. She moves forward when making her points. I love how Dolly takes her time to answer these ridiculous questions (that seem more like attacks). She repeats what Walters says back slowly to let her know “I heard you. I’m not an idiot .” And then Dolly answers with wisdom, intelligence, sincerity, and the perfect amount and use of humor. Walters looks like she’s holding on and trying to blast through the interview while Dolly is just relaxed and presenting calm and her beautiful self ... inside and out. Love you, Dolly. ❤️

Dolly wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She got where she is through her own hard work, inner faith and brilliance. She absolutely outshines the interviewer.
@David Wang Absolutely nothing you list here changes the fact that in the interview above Walters lacked class and respect. I don’t care how much someone achieves by being rude, there are a ton of people in the business who made it far by being disrespectful. If you need to degrade others to “make them shine” something’s wrong. This interview was a mess, and the only professional person here is Dolly.
Dolly Parton is a world class sweetheart. She seems like a person who can talk to anyone and brighten their day. She truly exemplifies the best in southern charm. Never seen anyone as poised as she is. Dolly is a star forever.

She’s all of those things AND she doesn’t let people walk all over her. That balancing of kindness and strength, humility and confidence, is everything. She shows us how to be soft and sweet while not giving an inch on your boundaries.
I’ve seen people be rude to her, but this is the worst! She’s a treasure. She has stood the test of time, remained humble, generous, inspirational, and beautiful!
And not to mention that absolutely adorable accent. It just sounds so charming and endearing to me, I found myself being in a complete awe and smiling while listening to her talk! Is that American southern accent by any chance?
I agree - southern accents are charming. Dolly’s accent differs from Southerners living in other parts of the southern US. For example, the southern accent my family from Georgia has is different from from hers in some noticeable ways if one listens. Texan accents sound different than those in Florida, and Tennessee has yet another variation on the accent. It’s fun to learn about these differences by talking to Southerners from different parts of the South.

Interviews should push limits. If they don't at least probe for some sort of interesting thing or bit of insight, why would you bother watching it? That said, the interview was very much patronizing and the interviewer clearly doesn't respect Dolly at all when this interview takes place and that's seen clearly in the questions. Would I change it? Nope. Because the interviewer reflected the criticisms of a wide swath of "society" types in 1977 who all thought they were better than her. It's no different than today listening to the coastal, self-appointed "elites" talking about fly-over country. It's just as derisive, arrogant, and dismissive. Those of us subject to that socially-acceptable scorn should be able to defend ourselves and respond to the critics. Dolly did that with class. She surely had to tuck some of Dolly's wisdom and intelligence into her pocket and carried it with her for her own rainy days. Ms. Walters disappointed me greatly here. Some jealousy maybe? Because she certainly couldn't touch, with a very very very long pole, Dolly's talent - or grace. Do you know how few people are recognized by their first names only? They couldn't have paid me enough money to be this rude and thoughtless.

Dolly Parton is an ICON for a reason. In this interview she shows she is unflappable. I wish I had an ounce of her poise. She’s a class act through and through, and talented on a level all her own. 💛NATIONAL TREASURE💛
There’s a difference between asking tough interview questions while giving someone a chance to explain themselves and berating or belittling them. Asking questions like this, in a respectful environment, allows an interview subject the opportunity to justify themselves to the people out there who *might* genuinely hate or disrespect them. When you interview someone the goal isn’t just to ask what *you* are interested in, but to ask what you know people watching have an interest in so that your subject can address those points.
Yep , there will never be another Dolly , she knew how to handle the phonies and she knew the entire industry was phony , and so (as she said) she loves a good joke , and that's how she played all those stuffy elitists like a fiddle and made a fortune doing it , and she was extremely talented in music and business

Dolly hit the nail on the head about marriage- getting married doesn’t take away your freedom when you and your partner love and respect one another as equals and feel secure in the relationship.
Amen to that. I'm engaged to a woman I've been with for over 6 years and I don't know what I'd do without her. I feel absolutely no loss of freedom in my relationship at all. If someone does feel a loss of freedom, they may at least take into consideration that perhaps that person may not be a good choice. It isn't a guarantee that that is the case, but take it into consideration.
This interview proves that the media has always been trying to shape the public's opinion. They have been pushing a distain for marriage, families and individuality. They had to do that if they were ever going to usher in a socialist type government.
When Barbara asked "How do you know?" the hatred was obvious. Who asks someone "how do you know your marriage won't end?" What a disrespectful thing to ask.

The opposite of behaving with class, would be behaving in a crass, or sleazy manner- like Harvey Weinstein. He’s very rich, but has no class. He’s sleazy. Dolly is a national treasure. She is one classy lady! Sweet, kind, giving and just an awesome person. She outclassed Barbara Walters with every answer.
Not that I support what Barbara was doing, but just remember this is the late 70's....still at a critical time when women wanted to be taken more seriously in the country...and in the workforce. Feminists didn't like Dolly because she felt they took women a step back, so Barbara couldn't help but ask the questions that she wanted to know and people were talking about. But as Dolly says, it's just to get attention, because many might not pay attention otherwise...and then they'd realize she's an absolutely incredibly talented performer. Mission accomplished, Dolly.

Some people are proud to be hillbillys. It is not something that anybody should be ashamed of just because some damn arrogant yankee thinks it's a putdown.
I am dumbfounded by this interview. Dolly, if being a "hillbilly" means to act with class, grace, and humility in the face of outright insult and ridicule, then I'd be honored to be called a hillbilly. You are one amazing lady!! You showed more class and distinction in one strand of your blond wig than BW in her whole body.
That is what being a hillbilly is as far as I'm concerned, which is why I'd want to live in Alabama, brilliant people! Some Americans take America for granted when people would kill to be over there, love from the UK
"Once they get over the initial shock, they'll see the true parts of me that should be appreciated." That quote right there made me fall in love with her

Barbara Walters is so patronising and doesn't listen to the people she's interviewing. She's actually quite crass in this. Dolly on the other hand is a masterclass of grace and authenticity.
It's a choice not to be frumpy
Barbara is just asking what a lot of people are thinking. I don't find interviewers who keep asking the same safe questions to be interesting. With that said, I admire Dolly and people who intelligently and patiently respond to questions without being defensive or maintain their professionalism with tough questions. This applies to both entertainers and people in politics.

Interviews are disturbingly intrusive
You could tell Dolly was uncomfortable at some points but she handled it like a queen
She always has been a very genuine, loving woman and an admirable human being.
Why? Because it wasn't a pink bubble bath for Dolly?
@@kma3647 As an Oregonian who grew up in Tennessee, I completely agree with you in all regards. It's really sad how lacking in empathy a lot of people are. I've experienced a lot less bigotry here, but at the same time, I feel there's a lot less love for one's neighbors here, too.
They are, but that's what gets viewers like you and me. TV is intrusive. Don't watch it.
Because she is one.
Dolly INVENTED the word “Unbothered” in this interview. God give me this kind of strength, class and loveliness when being faced with judgmental, stupid questions. Amen💕
God rejoices daily on His creation of Dolly.
Thank you for this beautiful prayer. I love it.
And people 🙄
I will remember these gracious responses forever and know, once again, the beauty of God's plans. I was sincerely ....gave me a bad taste in my mouth...for Barbara Walters to have stopped so low as to ask such ignorant questions when she had been the tree and the public had been the axe 🪓 that chipped, games, sliced, chopped away at her in a bad-joke manner for many years.
Then God's gonna have to put you though a lot struggle to get to that point, becuase people only improve with failure and struggle and defeat
This woman is a national treasure and should be honored!
I don't particular care for Country Music but NOBODY can question that talent and artistry of this amazing person.

It’s disgusting watching Barbara try to take down another woman like that. I bet she would NOT be happy had a man or anyone else treat her the same way.
Dolly Parton is an ICON for a reason. In this interview she shows she is unflappable. I wish I had an ounce of her poise. She’s a class act through and through, and talented on a level all her own. 💛NATIONAL TREASURE💛
I love Dolly ❤ I have such respect for her
Shame on Barbara Walters. Does she like it when people make fun of her lisp?
There’s a difference between asking tough interview questions while giving someone a chance to explain themselves and berating or belittling them. Asking questions like this, in a respectful environment, allows an interview subject the opportunity to justify themselves to the people out there who *might* genuinely hate or disrespect them. When you interview someone the goal isn’t just to ask what *you* are interested in, but to ask what you know people watching have an interest in so that your subject can address those points.
Dolly is such a lady even when people are blatantly disrespectful.
Yep , there will never be another Dolly , she knew how to handle the phonies and she knew the entire industry was phony , and so (as she said) she loves a good joke , and that's how she played all those stuffy elitists like a fiddle and made a fortune doing it , and she was extremely talented in music and business

Dolly is a saint. That woman sends books to children, for free, every single month.
And THIS is why Dolly is queen. Barbara is just a massive nasty poking troll, and Dolly handles her with amazing grace and PATIENCE.
"Barbara, where I come from, would I have called you a hack? When I think of hacks, am I thinking of your kind of people?"
Dolly radiates love.
Barbara isn't necessarily a nasty troll. People can be indoctrinated. A woman can fall victim to sexism -- even if it's against their own interest. Probably because it's been rampant in her own life. Can you imagine someone interviewing a man like this? Not now, and not then. ...Luckily, this type of mentality seems to be fading away. Albeit, with setbacks and slowly.
[applauds] You Said it!
Miss Dolly has always had nothing but my respect and admiration. yes she's flashy but it's on Her terms and for her own reasons. she's Never sold herself to be anything but real to herself.
babs, on the other hand, can Never claim that. i feel nothing but pity and disgust for the creature. as a feminist she once claimed to be, she failed herself and all she stood for. once upon a time, Maybe she was somebody worth something... she once had the integrity to be a journalist. but she caved into the system and threw away whatever spunk that made her genuine to become... *_This._*

Dolly's body posture is incredible. She is at ease and leaning in with respect and interest. Without an ounce of meanness. She is a person who causes others expose their ugliness in her presence.
Very astute.
I was thinking the same thing she is so comfortable and warming and respectful to others despite not perhaps receiving it back

Yes, Barbara was so envious and insecure in this interview. I think that was the source of her judgemental and disrespectful questions.
@@ForTheOmnissiah awesome!! I’m getting married in a month because I’m excited what the two of us can do together!
