  • This project has been a LONG time in the making and we are finally getting a chance to get it over to our friends at CIA Performance for some tuning! This little red New Edge Mustang is hiding some secrets under the hood and now we get the chance to show them off a little!
    In the early 2000s the Mustang GT powered by a 4.6 liter 2 valve was a fun component and competitive car in its stock form but compared with the power modern V8s are making they just don't stack up anymore. However, there's an easy way to breathe new life into those old Mustangs and in this case it's by forcing air down its throat with a Kenne Belle blower! Kenne Belle superchargers have been around for decades and are a proven solution to greater power without a crazy amount of cost or complication. As you'll see it not only helps bring our old Mustang considerably higher on power but it also adds that satisfying super charger whine!
    Not only is there a 2.1 liter supercharger under the hood, but INSIDE the motor there's also hiding a fully rebuilt motor sporting a 4.6 stroker motor taking displacement up to 5.0 liters! Oh and those rods, pistons, and crank, are all forged units from Eagle so she's built and ready for some hard work! Even with what are essentially stock heads with stock cams we should see some serious improvements over the factory 220-230whp these mustangs made when new. All supporting modifications have also been made as well including a new upgraded fuel pump and fuel injectors mounted in a factory fuel rail. The original supercharger pulley setup was used as well as we didn't know what boost level it was set for, however now that the dyno run has been done... maybe it's time to swap the pulley and go for a bit more boost?

    Every time these guys talk about the blower it makes me wanna rip my hair out. The KB is a 2.1 which is the size of a blower on factory GT500s, it is more than adequate for the engine. Boost is pressure not volume, the blower will flow the same volume of air on a 3.2L V6 as it would on a 6.wL V8. Pressure can bleed through overlap in the camshafts at the higher end. This blower with better heads and cams on that 4.6 is capable of 500HP to the crank at 9-10PSI.

    • @cjolney
      @cjolney Рік тому

      @@LarryReynolds591 the thunderbird engine bay is pretty tight, you'll probably have to throw on a flat electric fan and get rid of the shroud. The kit to look for is a takeoff intake from a 99-04 Saleen S281 "stage 2?" I can't remember what designated the supercharger, some saleens had a regular NA 2V. Anywho it's a 2v lower intake manifold with a hole on top for an Eaton M90, the same size supercharger from a thunderbird supercoupe or buick regal 3800. Sometimes you can find the 2.1 Mammoth supercharger like in this video with the intake. There's still other odds and ends you'll need like bigger injectors, or a different routing for the upper coolant hose, but the S281 intake is the main piece. Honestly I don't like prochargers or any of the other brands either, I know they make more boost but I just don't like the sound or how messy It looks under the hood. Your compression is going to be up from the PI head swap already, so don't skimp on parts, get ARP head studs and good MLS headgaskets. And degree the cams to set timing properly. I tried to go off the dots on the cam gears and mine had 3 different dots. I played the guessing game and cracked a piston, bent all 4 intake valves, and shit out all the hydraulic lash adjusters in the head, cracked a cam rocker. It was hell.

      @LR-hq6wj I would get a department of boost setup that allows use of 03-04 cobra blowers on the 2v. The stock blower would do good on stock motor 2v but if you ever wanted to build the bottom end you have access to modern blowers the 2v doesn't normally have access to like the gen3r 2650 tvs or even a used 2.3 tvs.

    Where can I get a smaller pulley kit for my Kenny Bell on my 2v?

  • @ThePocketMedic
    @ThePocketMedic 3 роки тому +5

    Be careful not to overspeed the supercharger if you change the lower pulley. Kenne Bell states the max RPM is 18,000 (Engine RPM x Upper/Lower Pulley ratio). That exposed under hood air filter should really be addressed as well. It's sucking in hot air from the engine bay instead of fresh, cool air from the fender with the stock setup. Heat soak and high IATs are an issue on these setups even without sucking in hot engine bay air.

This motor also had forged rods/pistons/crank done when the rebuild was completed. Eagle sells and entire "kit" for it, we ordered ours through Jegs.

      Its only running 8 psi and his has stock manifolds and cats that really holds it back. With those in place it would make another 30-40 horse prob at even less boost. Do that and pulley the thing down you're well past 400 to the tires. Its not spinning at all.

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  3 роки тому +1

      You're exactly right Ike, the stock manifolds and cats are what is holding this thing back for sure. It's more than capable of much more than what it's making, even a set of shorty headers and high flow cats would see a BIG power increase. Also yes you are correct, that's the lowest pressure setup we could break this car in on. A pulley swap in addition to the exhaust and it's 400 to the tires easily

      See the overall supporting mods matter alot. Only way you're getting anywhere near that na is with ported heads or aftermarket heads, cams, manifold, headers full exhaust and really good fuel. This car has none of those supporting mods. No heads no cams no headers stock midpipe etc. Not having those things make boost higher but it's still only king 8 psi. If they did heads, cams, headers and free flowing exhaust it would prob drop to like 5 psi at this current pulley setup lol. It's very conservatively pullied. You give the boosted setup the same supporting mods the na setup would need to come anywhere near this same power level the boosted setup is gonna be at like 450-500 at 10 psi or less. The overall supporting mods matter alot. There is more to it than type of blower and amount of boost. You gotta look at the big picture.

      @@johndillinger8482 well the crank rods and pistons needed replaced anyway, so the cost for the stroker kit was negligible. The cost aftermarket improved cylinder heads or even sending off the original set would have been anywhere from a thousand to several thousand dollars, swapping to an aftermarket set if cams and springs would have been another thousand plus. So we would have $2,000-$4,000 in additional costs in the build. How much power would that have gotten us? 15whp? 20? As we point out in the video there are other choke points in this system that need improved before we look at a serious cylinder head upgrade. Being this is a blower application the honest way to make more power is to turn up the boost, a few extra pounds of boost will MORE than make up for the difference and you're looking at $100 for more boost and 15 minutes of work.

      @@Vlad4949 they make a good product for sure but honestly in this situation not really necessary. With a slight upgrade in the pulley to push a little more boost we're already going to be at a comfortable limit of what the transmission and clutch will be happy with. There's definitely power locked away in this thing but at the end of the day we don't need ALL the ponies it can make!

    Usually shops are making videos about Great results. Not cars with low power numbers, and 10 other things a car needs to NOT have low power. I thought I heard $8,000 for the bottom end. Either way a built bottom end and a named brand blower ain't cheap. Way too much to spend for 349 rwhp.

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  3 роки тому +4

      Oh it certainly wasn't cheap, and you are right typically most shops are all about showing bit amazing spectacular results and nothing else. We try to be as honest as we can be with every project we build, and every video we put out. Was this motor build expensive? Yes absolutely. Could you make more lower for less money? Yes absolutely. In our world, and with this build specifically, we were looking to build something solid and durable that could also make very good power.
      One of the biggest points of having a car on a dyno and gathering data is the ability to plan future changes and upgrades, as well as spot weaknesses. With everything we learned from this session, we're essentially a pulley swap, which IS quick and inexpensive, away from essentially the limits of what a factory 4.6 2v block can take reliably. These pulls were the first runs to redline this motor has made, so consider it a shake down.

      The sound of a Mustang through Flowmasters is about one of the most 'Merica V8 sound from the 80s and 90s you can get. Purrfect rumble with plenty of attitude.
