Is anyone else impressed/amazed at how Ray can work so fast all while providing us step by step commentary? U da Man, Ray!
One handed, no less
No
Me, not so much....[insert sarcasm here] it took him 40 minutes. I just watched a couple build a 2 story home and move into it in 30 minutes flat. Now that is impressive!!!
Don't get too ahead of yourself, while Ray is good, he is not God level. Video editing can make even the most inept look like a wizard.
This job could have easily consumed several hours and another couple to do the editing.
Am I impressed? not overly, everything is bolt on...Am I amazed? no.
Watching a race team build a precision 3 second, 5000 HP Nitro Hemi engine between races in real time is both truly amazing and very impressive
He’s the Grand Poo Baa
being able to provide a narrative whilst undertaking any task is a sign of experience ..
Anyone who thinks it's easy simply needs to talk out loud and narrate what they see when they next drive their car / truck ..
by that provide a constant narration of what they see .. other vehicles / the road signs / junctions / any potential dangers / hazards .. it's not easy
Barbaric with the impact drivers glad its not my car mush 🤣
Put some clamps on those vacuum lines on the intake, they're prone to coming off.
Bro went from Scotty Kilmer to Chris Fix the way he had them parts laid out on his table!
Hey Ray, I noticed that the plug wires are numbered for each cylinder. I think you mixed a couple of them. Thanks for the great contents. 😉
Rev up other people's engines! I love it!
1998 Mustang GT 4.6 made 225 hp @ 4,750 rpm. What a slug. Great entertainment clip that's what counts.
You put that nice cover over the table, all the while not covering the fender with anything whence climbing all over it.
Couch Mechanic alert!Nice looking stuff, but it gets the same air from the same position as the old air filter!
If those high performance parts don’t add more power, at least it will give us the impression that it will just by looking at it.
You can certainly make intake/exhaust more optimally power orientated than OEM when remapped. Then the rabbit hole beckons and you start looking at porting, suddenly you're inside the engine and looking at what could be forged and it isn't, bigger valves ofc, head work, your wife moves out and you are left alone in a garage covered in oil; looking at a set of engine parts you have no idea how to get back together. Is that what's bothering you brother? ( bit of an Eddie Lawrence - The Old Philosopher tribute)
You lose efficiency in everyday driving ofc, the OEM has had engines it test bed for years and many 100k miles; learnt enough to know how much the books have to be fiddled with to get it through emmisions standards :D
At the very least without a tune it will pretty it up as long as it's kept clean.
"Those are called 'speed holes', they make the car go faster!"
With a proper ECU tune they will.
Just for looks only...because where does a stock intake get its air? From the "cold" outside. In fact most stock systems are better than the so-called cold air intakes with K&N filters, whose oil often fouls the MAF sensor.
I've had 2 Mustangs in my life. A 2003 GT and my current one is 2006 4.6 GT convertible. I really like working on both of them, they were easy to fix and never...never had any major issues. My 2006 these days sits in my garage and only comes out on non rainy days.
My pickup has been on jack stands for a while so my poor '05 'Stang GT has been daily driven for too long. Supposed to be my weekend toy. Soon as the truck he's back running I intend to give the Mustang some TLC and more muscles!
BTW you dropped a bolt and I didn't hear "gravity"! Major disappointment! Without a "gravity"I don't get my usual laugh and your video sounds incomplete! Just sayin'!
Not only is it shiny it blue so you know it's good 😂
My question is, what is the capacity of air flow through the OEM throttle body vs the capacity of the intake manifold? If the OEM throttle body wasn't restricting air flow through the OEM manifold, then there will be no HP increase. It doesn't matter what the throttle body can flow if the intake is already maxed out. It might feel like it has more HP because it will take less throttle pedal input to get the same HP output, but the max HP will be the same.
Also, the factory air filter looked like it could flow at least as much air as the new filter. Since the new filter had to be smaller than the hole in the fender to maintain the cold air intake, it might actually be a restriction. It looks good, but they should have either left the factory air box in place or supplied another air filter housing and a tube to connect it to the cold air supply. That would allow for a larger filter and with it, better air flow and more HP.
The factory ford TB ,MAF and filter are not restrictive in Mustang form, the heads , cams, and exhaust are junk. Wont rev to 5K without falling on its face. Plus it has 6 cats to choke the exhaust futhermore...
@JohnF-go3ss the MAF's effective area is 3994 mm², the 65mm throttle is a mere 2668 mm²
BBK 78mm effetive area is 3668 mm² which is overkill for stock heads and cam.
Just took notice Ray the pipe going to the throttle body is smaller than the throttle body
I don't think people appreciate how well you work one handed while holding your own camera. On another note, I started making the "ooooo" sound when turning off our car and now my 4 year old grandson has great fun making the noise with me.
if it doesn't slow him down I enjoy it, but when he's struggling it's highly annoying. His optimal performance is much more important for me, than him showing us the video feed. It gets way to stressed at some times. For a comparison look at South Main Auto Repair. It's looks more professional and is so relaxing to watch.
Sounds good 40:18 with the bbk cold air intake and the big bore Throttle body @Rainman Ray's Repairs
Loved the “Scotty” intro. Lol
The OEM intake was already a cold air intake; air entry through the fender, not under the hood.
Yeah, taking those factory intakes off are a mistake, you can just open up the silencer a bit and use a drop in high flow filter if you want.
That is to hilarious Ray 😂😂 Some good rhythm going on the "3 of them back in and in the socket thread it tighten it torque it repeat it pull it plug it wiggle it jiggle it Insert it thread Tighten it torque it torque it more pull it un click it I'm a robot" 😂😂 24:00 @Rainman Ray's Repairs
Another Great Video Ray! My Wife walked in while I was watching the other day, and she enjoyed your work and your entertaining way of working and is now a new Subscriber! :)
I think you listed every not " bop it" toy option until you ended with one.
Ray change the stock throttle body bolts do the new hex bolts. Don't use any of the stock bolts. Main reason is for the next guy. And stretched out bolts. Please change them to the new bolts.
I sure appreciate you using the correct terminology when describing parts and procedures.Very refreshing. A true sign of a great technician. Well done. A long time fan and follower. Thanks
Good to see a New Edge in the shop too. Love that generation of the 'crowd killer'.
these simple bolt on projects are some of my favorite videos to watch.
Performance Distributors/Davis Unified Ignition - good folks, good stuff!
Also, David Vizard has shown that the 4.6L 2V combustion chamber does benefit from a strong spark.
Great job on the wire routing looks factory sounds better for sure
Love your videos Ray. When you are working in engine bays, why don't you use fenders covers to protect the fenders from being scratched by for example your belt buckle or from a falling mobile source of lumens. We all know you take great care of your customer's pride and joy but accidents happen. And if the fender has a flat top surface it gives you more places to put things.
Ray, thank you for your videos! I'd give you a 5 star rating! You do excellent work both mechanically and video wise. Your videos are entertaining as well as instructional...that makes them well worthwhile of watching. I do wish you all the best and may God richly bless you.
Ray's announcement SHOCKS the entire car industry and he's MAD AS HELL!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Ray:
Yes, that "wood screw" goes there. That's the kind of screw Ford uses for things that screw into plastic intake manifolds. See also, coil packs.
Rays Speed Shop is now open
Dropping that coil bolt reminded me of my a/c mechanic days. Dropping bits while standing on a ladder or maint. Stand when working in the hanger, it got to the point where I wouldn’t have to watch where it fell as I could usually just listen. Near the endof my 4 yr Air Force career I could typically look right at the bolt or nut before climbing down to get it 😅 Washer were a different story 😮
Thank You Ray for having not one but two Mustang videos to look forward to. 💯/💯 Been a die hard Mustang enthusiast and had eight in my life including a modified 2014 5.0 that I currently have.
The one question that comes to mind is, why so many? I'm not knock'en Ford. Heck, I have an F150 w/ a 6 inch lift for a daily. I'm in the middle of building a 5.0L HO to replace the 4.6L (VIN 6) that's currently in it. Not for any particular reason, just because why not. I already owned the 5.0 as a complete motor and the truck, 97 F150 4X4 (I've got a lot of the nifty buzzers and whistles new trucks have. Just without the payments 😉). Anyway, I'm almost 50 and I haven't owned eight vehicles my entire life. Yeah, I've only had five. Not counting race cars or the wife's cars. But if you wanted to count the race cars, it's still only seven. Just curious is all. 🤠😎
@@abitoffcenter383 always seemed to upgrade to a newer better version. Im actually looking to trade in for my 9th if I ever find my unicorn. 2014 Shelby GT500. Need that 662 HP in my life 😛
@@vancity_5.0 We ALL need that 662 HP in our lives!! At least once anyway.
Don't tell the wife, but I've about got myself talked into putting a Texas Speed super charger on my 5.0. Haven't fully made my mind up.
You'll catch that unicorn!! Just keep push'en towards it!
Be safe out there!!
Ray's announcement SHOCKS the entire car industry and he's MAD AS HELL!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Freeing up the intake into and exhaust out of a 4.6 with NPI intake manifold, heads and cams is a like digging a hole at the beach. It'll keep ya busy, you might even be happy with how it looks. But when you wake up the next day, it's going to be the same 'ol beach :P
😂😂😂 yup
True. I remember when the 98s came out and they were turds just like the 96s and 97s. However, most of the parts he installed were maintenance items which needed replacing anyways. I would have passed on the BBK intake and throttle body though.
@@LA_Commander Yea the money the customer wasted on the BBK junk should have been put into better shocks and struts.
@@LA_Commander Yup, you can open up the intake, but if the heads themselves are limited ... dun dun dun dunnnnn....that's why I had to start with my heads...👍👍👍

I worked on a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis Last weeks has this Same 4.6L V8 ford engine had a Destroyed plastic Thermostat housing Had 3/4 of a inch of Jb weld and Permitex rtv gasket maker on it Replaced the Plenum with the updated plastic plenum with the metal Thermostat housing and cross over my customer might want that bbk throttle body and intake Upgrades for his 28:00 @Rainman Ray's Repairs
I didn't realize the Panther Platform (Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, Town Car) got Coil on Plug before the Mustang. My 1998 Police Interceptor had Coil on Plug rather than coil packs with wires.
LOL the intro!!
ooooh pretty blue, sexy engine now !! It makes it more powerful !!
Thanks Ray. Your videos are very helpful for guys like me that do tackle some repairs and modification.
Hey Ray, this is just a heads up. I was watching a video just now and welding on top of brake cleaner can be higly poisonous as it can create phosgene gas. It cann kill in very low concentrations. Take care
Many mechanics do that 😱😱😱
Are you referring to Chlorinated Brake Cleaner? Most of it is non-chlorinated and is not a problem. The chlorinated type is dangerous when exposed to UV light.
That's why you #1 ensure it has evaporated. #2 all ways ensure you have plenty of ventilation. As even in the absence of anything else, the gasses produced while welding are poisonous & will cause major neurological problems. #3 Don't stick your face right in the weld. For the exact same reason. If you're going to weld you need to understand basic saftey steps. The whole "oh my God! If you weld "on top of" X, you will kill yourself" YT videos often don't understand the basic safety hazards of welding, and over play something heard from a friend, that had a GF, who heard it from a guy she was cheating on him with, that had a cousins he was banging who works at Walmart.

Question: Ray you put dielectric grease on the spark plugs but, not on the coil end? Wouldn't both sides get a benefit?
Just a guess, the spark plug ends are in a "well" that may accumulate water etc. The coil ends not so much. But would benefit from Ray's answer.
Come on, exhaust system change. I hope Ray takes it out on the road for us.
Loved the Scotty Kilmer parody!
I love the way you have everything laid out!
My favourite, Ray installing new upgrade parts!
As always, your attention to detail is impeccable.
I would love to be inside the head of the Ford engineers/designers when they think of where to place the engine items . I am a Ford guy and it amazes me as to what they were thinking when they positioned some of the parts . Checkout the position of the battery on the ‘14 Escape ecoboost . I have one and for me it is a few hours to change batteries . Stay safe , have fun
Fuel filter is in the back, not near the steering. Non- moving parts don't need lubricant. Dielectric grease serves a different purpose
thankyou Ray,,very nice upgrade,,👍👍
Most Mustang owners will never be happy until their cars qualify under NHRA rules as funny cars.
I have said it before on other videos, but I'll say it again. Thank you for taking the time to produce this content! It is super interesting and honestly helpful to watch an expert at work.
Anything that's educational is interesting and honestly helpful to watch
Having found that sand around one spark plug I would have taken the precaution of blowing air around the each of the rest of the plugs before removing them!! That's something I was taught to do to every component before I removed it anyway!
The proper way to keep debris out of the engine and plug threads is, blast the immediate area with air, then blast into the spark plug tubes after removing the wires, then crack the plugs lose and rotate them out about a turn and air blast again to remove any dirt or sand sitting down there trapped. Use hand tools when removing the plugs to feel for any resistance, if encountered you can lube the old plugs with some WD-40 and run them in and out to see if it’s fixed, if not chase the threads with the proper tap or thread chaser (yes they are different tools).
“Rev up other people’s engine!!!” 😂😂😂😂
1 second in and I was LMAO. 😂
Ray, nice to see you working on some performance toys.
I miss the PT Cruisers...
Not that I would EVER want to work on one myself!
I really like the editing of this video. Speeding up through the standard stuff makes it easier to watch. Great move.
Most mechanics would not use thread tape Kudos to you.....
I always love your videos Ray. I’ve had to reference some of them to fix my Lincoln (to use as a guide) so I can at least get it into the shop to professionally get fixed.
*"REV UP OTHER PEOPLE'S ENGINES!"* Yep, don't watch that channel anymore!!😂
Good day to you, Ray.
Thats a nice looking Mustang before the mods. Gonna be even nicer once all the work is done.
Looking forward to the next phase, keep up the great work Ray.
See you on the next one! 👍👍👍
Would've been nice to have a before and after dyno to show the actual effects on performance, especially with the "guaranteed" performance increase.
It only good for few miles until ECM trim everything back to its original. Then that k&n air filter engine will self destruct from too much dust and moisture getting thru.
@pnp8849 huh? I mean, I get the trim thing, the throttle body is more beneficial for wide open with its larger diameter but the filter thing makes no sense...
Any engine is a big air pump. The easier and colder air is getting in, faster it's mixed with fuel and burned, and less restrictive it is leaving the exhaust, the more efficient it is. Most times we base thsee kinds of go fast goods on a HP number or TQ. Or 0-60mph. My 4.6 Town car has 2 cats on each side. I hollowed them out, shoved a pipe up through so it looks the part, no sniff here, and cut mufflers and just run factory resonators. I get better Mpg, sounds better not too loud but sounds like a V8 sedan should, and I cut and sealed off tge silencers in intake and it has a tiny 2.5 inch hole and horn that sucks in air. I cut the entire bottom of box an inch past filter. I get was better mileage, passing in a yacht is fun, and I just smile more. Sometimes it's not about number but about how happy it makes u. But I'm no interweb master classman. I'm sure there's a ultimate master that will guarntee these go fast goodies with net u a solid 245 HP extra and 280 Ftpds of turks. And shoot flames out pipes when u shut off, Bury gas, and start back up in Neutral. Ahh I good old days when cars sucked and music did not. U have a gr8 wknd.
Always a good day when a fresh video is ready for viewing.
🤣 @Rainman Ray's Repairs that snarky but friendly nod to Scotty Kilmer intro was great brother! 😆 lol.
Cold Air Induction will net slightly more HP than a Short Ram system, always a good choice if the car can handle one. The '89 Toyota I restored required a Short Ram system, but that still boosted the HP by 12%.
Loved the Scotty intro!!!! 😄😁😅🤣😂
@RainmanRaysRepairs I’m a mechanic myself, I’ve always wanted to own my own shop and learn your positive attitude about things. 😅
Nice job ray looking forward to part 3 all the best mate 🔧🔧🔧👌👍
Very cool upgrades Ray TY for the video mate enjoyed it a lot.

Those mods take me back to my early 20's.
Ive got an 01 mustang Cobra. Only an NA 4.6 dohc 5speed. Its stock except wheels n tires are wider. Only about 300 hp but still fun as heell to drive.
good day to you Ray another outstanding video as always RAY but the most important thing is to have yourself a great day
Adding a larger TB will not increase HP. The engine can not use more gas unless a cam requires it.
Watching all the sweat fall brings new meaning to rainman
Happy Hump day Ray. I am excited for a new video with the Mustang.
Nice shot at Kilmer in the intro 😂😂
I hate wearing nylon gloves, due to the same extreme hand sweat. I hate the feeling. I switched to the breathable, light duty mechanics gloves. So much better, and well worth the additional cost. I found a very negligible decrease in dexterity, but gained some protection. Win/win/win
I thought it was only me with the hand sweats with nylon/nitrile gloves. 🤔
Is there a particular brand/model you prefer that's light weight for maximum dexterity?
I know my way around the 4.6. With that engine as is, anything more than a 70mm throttle body is a waste and HP loss. You can port the short side radius of the OEM elbow and get more hp and torque with just the 70mm throttle body bolted to it. Way less coin, better results. For intake, take off the fender snorkle on the OEM intake, along with the mesh infront of the MAF and you will get better results. The extra length and bends in those cold air intakes reduce horsepower. Coils, plugs and wires, Mission Systems stuff hands down only coils and plugs that work. Rest are china. The other best mods to do to the 4.6 2 valve are exhaust port matching and cleanup on short side of the intake runners to port match, 3.73 or 4.10 gears, and X pipe. Any other mild mods are essentially useless unless you throw on a chip (recommend Delta Force if they still make them) or blower.
One last thing... if you are zip tying the wires to the coils, they are not installed correctly. Look on the Mission Systems website for the ignition wire install on their coils. It will explain how to properly install. The inside of connectors are not seated right.
Ray doesn't read instructions
I really like this Mustang build series. I hope we get some more performance add on videos like this. Excellent work Ray Ray.
Having done nearly this exact same thing on my 97 Cobra, I can appreciate that he did the wires one at a time and in sequence…ask me how I know. It’s why I used to LABEL everything. It took me half a day to get that rats nest straightened out and routed properly. This was before UA-cam or cell phone cameras, now I take a pic before I start pulling shit apart like a moron.
Been there done that! You only have to live this miserable experience one time. It can be a hard learned lesson but once you make life unnecessarily hard for yourself you won't do it again! (Hopefully!)😆😆😆
Great job Ray. I once had a 4.6 in a police car that when changing the spark plugs I didn't blow out the plug holes and it caused a cam follower to come off and smashed the plugs . We found that so much carbon had built up that broke loose and kept smashing plugs.
Thank you for this video! I needed to see this today, tired from my own job. I have evidently not done this kind of work before, had to tilt my head back several times to take it all in, every time something unexpected happened. EGR = Jack in the box.
LOVE the Scotty dig.
More STEAM!!!! Nice mods, looking forward to the Exhaust mods👊✌️
Air compressor breaker clip. "Under pressure" starts playing in my head.
Very nice upgrade.
Welcome back Ray. Where did you go? Congratulations on the new shop!
I've had both the 16 and 32 valve 4.6 motors. The difference between the two is quite drastic. The 32 valve had more horsepower because it could handle more air flow.
I’ve got a 97 cobra with the 32 valve DOHC. With Steeda UD pulleys, JLT intake, Dr. Gas X pipe Bassani Catback, SCT tuner, 4.30 gears fun to drive.
@@Darkjedi991/4 mile time?
Yes. That's why one was rated at 215 HP and the other was 305 HP.
