yeah it happens. That place is full of Zebra muscles so i'm guessing that was the culprit. I'll use a flouro uptrace the next time. Just gutted I lost the footage from the camera and that I didn't download it to my phone when i was viewing it earlier that day. We live and learn.
Steve, I think if you are gonna use a camera you really need to beef up your mainline and terminal tackle (minimum 50lbs braid, small barbless hooks that you can straighten out if you get snagged )... this very incident is why I shy away from investing in an underwater camera... A shame that... 😤 Keep goin, mate... 😎👍☘🍻
I’ll be giving it a try very soon. The couple of times I did go to fish it last year it was in flood and I couldn’t even get near the lake. I’ll try again this year.
I was using the tubing off the Westin escape cam on it as a semi running rig. So when the line broke it only has to pull the swivel from the rubber and the camera will sink to the bottom. So it won’t be towing that around. Unfortunately it will still have the trace, but I purposely strike very early when pike fishing and only use semi-barbless hooks. So hopefully the pike will be able to rid itself of the hooks. The nature of pike fishing is that these rigs are used to catch pike the best we can do as anglers is to try minimise the dangers as best we can but like everything in life is not always 100%. My guess is that my line was cut by the large amount of zebra mussels that are in that lake. Its never anyone intention to leave a rig in the water or in a fish but unfortunately and regrettably, it sometimes a happens.
@@FishingwithSteveIreland I completely get it mate the local syndicate water I fish has a lot of people who poach it and I went out today for the first of the season and 6 deep hooked fish I had to get the stomach up remove traces it’s just a pain in the arse mate just as well I’m a bit more confident with deep hooked fish! Tight lines for the rest of the season buddy 🐊🐊
If you really care about fish welfare you would use a circle hook rig. Hook the bait through the tail, one single hook nothing more. No need to strike early or strike at all let the fish swallow the bait and instead of setting the hook simply reel. The hook will come out of the bait in the pikes mouth travel up from the gut and get caught on the scissor 99% of the time. I deep hooked one with this method once this season and had to leave the circle hook in. The fish has a higher likleyhood of survival as the circle was flat up against its throat. If that was a treble it would have blocked the pikes throat preventing it from eating. Plenty of youtbe vids about circle hook rigs. Id say its worth a try atleast. Love the videos. Tight lines from the west of IRE.
@JK-ww8dn I’ve never used a circle hook rig but I’ll definitely have a look into it. Thanks for dropping the comment best of luck for the season over west. 👍🏻
@FishingwithSteveIreland Got 7 pike that day, on a whopper plopper, fishing the margins. Great fun. Lovely lake but very weedy the time of year. The opposite side is a good spot, much deeper over there. Can access via greenway 👍
@@Damopatrick the camera would have dropped off straight away, the line ran through tubing. I always strike early on takes and use barbless hooks so hopefully the fish throw the hooks.

Hi Tom, it was good to meet you last week ( I was impressed with your reel negotiations with Dave 😜) I'll do a short video with the rig I use. I make the traces myself and they are nearly all Fox rage components apart from the trebles. Then its usually just a running ledger rig but I'll go through it in detail on a video.
Yeah no worries Chris I've a few requests in on the traces and rigs so I'll get a video done on those. It is a pity about the camera but I was gutted about the footage. There was great footage of a pickup I'd had earlier that day and how the pike felt must have felt the rig and spit it out. I'd a whole section of the video planned on talking about their behaviour around the bait. then it was gone in an instant. I'll just have to go and get more footage next week. 😉
