  • Since 2002 I have been shooting landscapes with the Pentax system. Now well into 2020 I continue to use Pentax to capture the amazing world that surrounds us. This video discusses why I continue to shoot with the system and my thoughts about the future of this dynamic and versatile camera brand.

Absolutely love your enthusiasm for Pentax mate, which is more than merited. I shoot Canon, Sony and Pentax and the Pentax ergonomics are miles ahead. Nothing feels as good as my K70 in my hand (please, no obvious jokes here) and the innovation that Pentax has demonstrated over the years shows that they deserve huge respect and admiration. Thanks Matt for spreading the word.

I love Pentax and their ergonomic but the technology et innovation are way behind the others brands.
Bad live view , bad Auto focus, not a good ips , the photo noise is awful, and very expensive.
And I compare with other DSLR models from canon or Nikon.

Totally agreed. Pentax make brilliant cameras. I have been using them for about 8 years. Won plenty of comps. Value for the dollar the best value on the market. Nice video.

Especially as a landscape photographer... bro I don't want to look at a f***in' screen! I want to look through that clear crystal right through my lens and into the real world. That's what I'm there for anyways, to capture the magnificence of mother nature. Since I was a kid, the best thing about "expensive cameras" (what I called SLRs and DSLRs lol) to me was looking through those beautiful viewfinders. I'll be damned if I ever go to an electronic viewfinder.

Great video. Been using a K3 Mark 1 from the day it was released and don’t have a need to buy another camera. Wonderful system, weather sealing, shake reduction, great feature, amazing ergonomics. You can change settings so quickly with buttons and dials while holding on to the grip and occasionally using the other hand. Can’t beat it.

Just came across your channel, glad to see someone waving the Pentax flag. I started with the SV in 1966, and later the SL (was a bit sceptical about a delicate meter movement a la Spotmatic). Still using the MX I bought in 1978, greatest 35mm film SLR ever I reckon. Three features especially that do it: 0.97x viewfinder magnification, shutter cocked indicator, DOF preview. Film still does it for me, but if I ever do go digital the K-1 should be the ticket (I'm mainly into landscape too). Lets just hope the bean counters at Ricoh keep the Pentax brand alive, bit of a worry in these uncertain times.

Great history with Pentax. I am sure you know those film camera’s inside out like an old mustang convertable. Hahahaha. So good to here that you are still shooting film. I am sure that one day I will get back into it again on the side. Miss that mix with Fuji velevia. Mate, you’d love the k1 on the other side. So full of options to meet anyone’s needs and strengths in my opinion. Have a great day and thanks for sharing with us your history!!!!!

I’ve been shooting PENTAX since the 80s and was one of the early ones into their first *istD DSLR at the end of 2003. It’s still working but I’ve been using the K-1 since 2017. While I also use an Olympus OM-D for some lightweight needs, landscape has always been my thing and the K-1 excels at this

Now that's a man with passion for Pentax! Loved the video. I'm a photo hobbyist. I started with a brand spanking new, award winning Pentax K10D. One of the things that sold me on it was the built in Shake Reduction (SR). The other thing was using all those old lenses. Takumars, SMC's, M and A lenses. Not being a professional I am limited to how much I can spend. But boy do I have a collection of old manual lenses! Currently I use a K-5II. It's an older generation but It's as solid as a rock. I do have a few auto focus lenses and they do a fine job for me. It's a nice system and I'm going to stay with it.

When I decide my system, I actually want to go with Pentax, as I admire the technology, and its approach to digital cameras...
But in my country, pentax isn't widely available (the new and updated lineup, not the old film and manual lens).
And with limited availability, comes the price tag..

Matt great video. I shoot Pentax myself since 1979. First camera was K1000 which I sold to buy an MX. From there K20D to a K3 to a K1MkII and a K3MkIII which I use for real estate and AirBnb photography and for fun the K3MkIII Monochrome. Lots of different lenses building my collection. I am not interested in mirrorless which I tried and I don't like. My Pentax cameras are rugged and I love them. My biggest problem is deciding which one I want to use. I see your stuff on FB. Keep up the good work.

Well done! I bought my first Pentax *istDL2 in 2006 and about a year later the K10D, which was good enough for me for about 10 years. Then I got me the K3-II which blew me away. Not only the image quality, but also the fact, that I could transition from the K10D basically without even looking at the manual. Everything, every button, every menu item was just where I expected it. Either from where it had been with the K10D or if it was a newer feature it was simply where it belongs. Unlike Sony, where the menu structure seems like a secret spellbook from Hogwarts. (though I hear that they optimized that drastically in the newest models).
I'm just a bit frightened, hearing that Pentax put so much design effort in the grip for placement of the middle finger. The K3/K3-II feels perfect in my hand, so actually I don't want any finger placement changed...

Really great video. I've been with Pentax for 20+ years and just got a KP and a K1, after owning a K-5iiS and a K-3 for the past 8 years. I've still to really put the K1 through its paces and I'm a bit daunted by the need to find more lenses to use with it, but very excited about what it will bring. In the meantime, the KP is a stellar APS-C camera and I have a full complement of lenses to use with that. Great video Matt. Nice to hear an aussie accent espousing Pentax.
I just spent a week on a photo tour with 7 others. None of whom had even seen a Pentax in the wild. I got all sorts of questions from the 'old hands'. "Why do use that?" "Can't you afford a Canon?" "Doe's it shoot raw?" "I hear there are not many lenses."
I even got a swipe about the lenses not being "L series" PFFFT. Typical uninformed stuff.
Then I spent a while smiling inwardly as the mirrorless folk struggled in the rain with their flimsy gear. Getting blown over. (the top of the line canon got blown over and the body seal came apart slightly.) Concerned about getting ithe gear wet. Contriving weather covers out of plastic bags. Putting them away so as not to get wet. I just kept clicking away with the 15-30, 24-70 and modified 60-250. Not a worry in the world, except staying upright in a howling gale.. :)
I really should have taken the grip off, mounted the FA 43 or 77 and showed them 'stealth mode in the pub at dinner. Try that with a Sigma beer can or an L series. I use the Da 40 as a body cap.... :)
Then I got back home and pulled up the raw files. Majestic! The most plasticine, malleable files available. Deep rich colours. Pin sharp images. The duds were my fault, not the gear.
Why do I shoot Pentax? Cause its the best damned landscape 36mm camera available. I don't shoot sports, so don't care. I have never switched any of my DSLR's to Video. Don't care to. I shoot people and landscapes. I have the best available tools.

@@MattBishopPhotography Well after using my Canon 5D2 I decided to go with the Nikon system and slowly I managed to sell everything Canon. I am happy with the Nikon system, I like the dynamic range and the built of the cameras, I just recently purchased the D850 and I still have my D810 which I used for almost 5 years now. I will keep the D810 regardless as a backup and even use it since it has a flash and I can trigger my other flash with it.
In mirror-less format I purchased a year ago the Fujifilm XT3 for a walk around and I even shot landscapes with it. These two systems for casual shooting using the Fuji and more serious shooting with the two Nikon DSLR I am quite fulfilled. I am in the USA in Oregon and there are many places to visit and put the equipment to good use. I do mostly stock photography and you can type in google (Rigucci Photography) to see all the array of shooting that I do. Leica M was added, after my failure, in using Large Format, to Medium format. The LF had too many area of disaster! The Leica was great, but even 56 years later, not sure It was worth it! So Nikon with SLR was my pro rig. Lenses were easily available and affordable! Not as affordable as Takumars as Digital, began to appear! So throughout my life, Pentax K-1000, Spotmatics and K-mount were given haven. Folks gave or `sold for pennies' as I still shot film! Now not a pro, less problem with eyes, glasses, then cataract op. agin only for some reading. * some Pentax finders more for long sighted! I was short sighted till 45! Bravo!

I made a conversion from a Canon 70D over to a Pentax K1 Mk II and I have not regretted it at all. I didn't have the best glass for my Canon, however I have seen my photography improve drastically with my conversion. I have a few older lenses, but I absolutely love them. They are so sharp and my pictures have changed drastically. I used to have the hardest time with my 70D. I would go to edit pictures and see them being soft and it drove me crazy. Have not had the same issue with my K1 mk II that wasn't my own fault. I actually like the weight, it helps me to anchor my shots, and my heaviest lens right now is a FA* 80-200 f/2.8 and I love it. Maybe one day I'll be able to get the D FA 600mm. Great video. I completely agree with all points you brought up with it. Let me pose this.. I was shopping for a full frame, and I narrowed it down to three cameras. I went downtown to a well known shop and they totally ignored me.I finally played around with the K1,liked the simplicity of the buttons.dials, and feel. I asked a tech what was the difference between the brands, and he told me,popularity only. I left the store and bought my Pentax k1 mk2 elsewhere, with 2 extra batteries, filter, extra SD card. The FIRST time I was outside with it,it was pouring rain, and i shot without any concern. I knew I needed a solid, study, and reliable camera. Then I shot like 3am and it worked without a hitch, and it gives me the same colors i see before taking the shot. It's so easy to work with, and I agree with Matt, because I can carry the camera and gear, without crying about the weight/size, like some toddler.Needing to buy every
new' cameras all the time is a UA-cam SCAM, because we are taking the same pictures. UA-cam is trying to bully people into spending $5000+ to take the same exact picture of a flower bed that we took 1 week ago. Faster???How do you need faster when we caught millions of action shots with film cameras? We NEED 500 shots of a race car passing by? We NEED 300 shots of a tennis shot return or serve???Yes,I did buy tow 4 mirrorless cameras that do 4k unlimited recording and live atreaming, so now all the bases are covered that the K1 can't..Oh and i use open source software to save/process my stills..

Hi Matt, I started off into photography with an old camera of my dad's (an Argus) at the age of 12. The camera looked like an brick with a lens stuck to it! After dabbling around with it for a couple of years I finally bought my first camera in the early eighties second hand, which was a Pentax K1000 (which is still working perfectly to the day, may I add)! Started working at an educational institution where Minolta was pretty much the standard; I had the X300 and an XD5. I still did not trust them as much as the Pentax though, as I could pick up the Pentax at any time, do some settings on it and knew for certain that the picture would be perfect. Many years later, working in the commercial photography industry (I then did photographic editing and manipulation, using PhotoShop), I bought a then "outdated" istD for a song! The camera was broken and we had it fixed. I merely changed to digital then as film photography became too expensive at the time. Almost 20 years later I'm still using the istD and although I have given some thought to getting a "better name" brand (for the lack of a better word), I never really felt the urgency to do so as I am still very much satisfied with the istD and don't consider changing yet! I think I am a Pentax user for life, so Good on ya!

Fast forward, I've been ill for many years and had stopped photographing for almost 25 years and there he was, the K1. I saw the specs and felt in love again and bought that beast. Everytime I am impressed with the quality of the images and yes, I agree, it is the best landscape camera. The new dfa*50mm f1.4, hd-fa 35mm f2.0, both dfa macro 50 and 100mm, the da*300mmf4 and even the standard zoom dfa 28-105, are so sharp, I cannot believe it sometimes. All the functions you mentioned are so easy to access and if you learn to use the green button well, it is so helpfull and fast for several functions. This camera is a joy to use and there is really nothing that I think of that I cannot do with it. From astro to macro and everything in between, it just does the job. A marvel! hi Matt, thanks for your concern, I started studying by myself all the medical stuff for almost seven years and was able to regain my health for, let's say 80%. I am able to work part time again after 12 years of severe pain and misery, so most of the time I'm good now 😉
What I would like to ask is how to look at the histogram on the display, compared to the real and huge dynamic range in RAW images of this camera . The histogram is a representation of the processed jpg, according to your color, WB and exposure settings, if I understand it correctly.
Is there a way to estimate, only by looking at the display, how many stops of extra highlight there will be left over if ETTR is used, and how much you can recover from the darkest part, without needing to open the raw file on a computer?
I did some tests and it surprises me how much more usefull information there is available in the highlights (like bright clouds), as well in the darkest shadows in the RAW files, compared to what I saw in the histogram on the camera display.
Maybe there are ways to find a rule that you use?.
I already tried making a picture of a grey card, mach it in the middle of the histogram to set the starting point and start to overexpose and underexpose until I cannot recover the data.
Do you know of any rule for optimising your exposure for landscape to get the highest dynamic range in one shot? I know how to make hdr images, but I don't like this technique that much. Sorry for the long question and thank you for your time.
Have a nice day Matt and keep shooting, it is worth the work!
      Greetings, Sven (edit for typo)

@@svenbontinck8875 sounds like you’ve been through a hard battle mate. Good on you that you’ve pushed through it all and still battle on. With your question regarding exposure, I always refer to my histogram and sharpness after each shot, but as a general rule I double exposure if I have a dominant skyline in the image to avoid any clipping and mask the images together in photoshop. Otherwise If it’s a single shot I use my highlight warning in liveview and exposure for the whites. This usually never lets me down. But let’s say that after almost 2 decades in field I kind of know at a glance how to adapt in any given situation. Your eye pretty much becomes an accurate exposure meter in any circumstance

Thanks for posting! Because my day job is writing software (with photography as hobby), I tend to be attracted to technical toys with shiny buttons and so I'm quite prone to upgrading to something nearer to the latest & greatest (although I don't usually buy when first released as it happens). However I have had my K-1 for 4 years now and for once I'm not craving any other camera - in fact the K-1 is quite possibly better than my skills deserve.
I do a lot of walking with my gear, I'm not super young and so don't like a heavy kit and also quite like shooting with primes. So I tend to carry around the 3 x FA limiteds (love them!) a lot - which makes for a relatively small and light kit or the DFA 28-105 (which performs beyond my expectations) if weather is not going to be so good. I do miss a decent ultra wide though - and I think the DFA 15-30 doesn't fit with my usage pattern unfortunately. Hoping the new UWA DFA limited comes out in the not too distant future.
My only, somewhat minor (as its manageable), complaint with the K-1 is shutter shock. It shows up quite a bit for me (irrespective of SR on or off or tripod use), I think, because I shoot mainly with very light lenses (heavier lenses appear to dampen these vibrations). But if I mostly avoid the 1/60 - 1/250 shutter speed range when using OVF and have ES turned on in LV, its not a problem.

Still using a K5. Great camera. And Pentax digital lenses are really good quality. Then there's the huge choice of all the classic old manual lenses. And great colour science.

Another K-1 landscape photographer here. I wondered when you were going to mention weather-sealing. I don't care about mirrors, video, AF speed, or weight, but I want quality. I used to walk around with a 6x7 and I'm not even a big guy. It is sad to see most UA-camrs reviewing a camera immediately start to talk about its video. It's like stills photography does not exist any more.

I got my first dSLR in 2011 and it was a first rung on the ladder. Given the options at my price point Pentax won my custom with their Kr. As often happens, those of us on a tight budget remain with our first manufacturer when you've invested in lenses etc. It's quite bizarre that Pentax are rarely even considered despite the fact that I and many others have always been happy customers of theirs. People scoffed at Pentax for not having a full frame model for years despite having the Medium Format then and before many others. Despite the fact that you can still use awesome lenses from the 70's. I'd love to get my hands on a K1 but I can still do so much with my K10, K-5 and K70. Long Live Pentax.

Some of the best images I have ever captured were taken with the k10 and K5 and I can tell you that the K5 is still a very powerful tool on the market. To be honest people are unaware and dont talk about pentax for 2 main reasons. 1. they dont release a body every 6 months willy nilly like other brands do (why should they when they are always ahead of the others). 2. their marketing is certainly more descrete than other brands so awareness is low.

    I am a Landscape Photographer.
Pentax K1 has 36.4MP censor made by Sony, and with NO Aliasing Filter, therefore the censor should is likely 20% clearer than other brand censors with it. I have been shooting with it since the July 2016. Its been a joy to use, while Pentax lens are not the sharpest of all brands, they present extreme sharpness when stopped down to f5.6 to f14 (24-70mm), f4 to f16 (70-210mm) and f4 to f17 (15-30mm) lens. (Note: I had to calibrate my camera to each lens, and surprisingly I had to adjust to -12 to get the best results for the 24-70mm lens, AND I suggest that everyone do same in order to get really sharp images.)
I am extremely happy with this camera, and have invested on lens, ND Filters etc therefore I wont give up on this piece of camera. It has given me lots of joy, and my work can be printed up to 45x30 inches without noise. My first PENTAX was K-1000 FOLLOWED BY ME-Super.
I tried the Astro-trace feature but with no success, may be I did not calibrate the GPS etc.????

    • @MattBishopPhotography
      @MattBishopPhotography  3 роки тому +1

Yes the gps has to be calibrated correctly. I haven’t had much use with Astro as it is not my genre but no many that are having great results with the system

I went through a similar direction but started with a Spotmatic F. The first K mount was a P30T and then a buch of film cameras, even a 67. I skipped the *istD too and got a K10D. Then K7, K5iis, K3 and K1.
I need to learn about the contrast detection, I just manually focus (I own so many manual lenses). I am pining for the 15-30 and it will likely be my next purchase (I have the 20-35 f4 A and 20mm f2.8 A ) Thanks for the tips.

The 15-30 is a brillant lens. You won’t regret the purchase. My favorite lens by far. Contrast detection is a powerful too and in many situations and a lot of the time more
Reliable than my aging eyesight!!! Hahahahah

Enjoyed the video and I agree with ya! I sold my original K1 and gave the Sony A7III a try. Needless to say I've got myself a K1 again, haha. Considering selling the A7iii when the new aps-c comes out, but will probably hang onto it for video for the moment. As to your weather sealing point, yeah...I'm afraid to take the Sony out in the rain and usually just bring the K1 and a gorpro in those conditions. Haha

Well done and well said. People tend to forget the basics as you say.
I do shoot motorsports with (now for a couple years) a K3 and a K3-II and, to be honest, i just seen my machines and lenses over saturated of work and not being able to follow action as I wanted shooting Formula 1 in very fast Circuits.
But for the rest of series they work great. Yes, the AF could be better and the buffer faster. Indeed. I wish! But those cameras are rugged, they can do WRC at - 5 C no problem. I do use most likely Sigma lenses that do combine great with those bodies and some Pentax lenses (DA* 50-135mm, F 50mm f1.7, DA 50mm f1.8, M 135mm f3.5,etc....). Those are machines that work. Are very well built. Are great in hand for its size and disposition of buttons, its easy to use them and they can produce stunning images.

@@MattBishopPhotography that is my wish and hope. Yet my "old" cameras keep going strong and doing the job. Yet i am a 2nd hand buyer so it still will take some extra time to get the newer camera.
As you also point out, you need to know what camera+lens is a good combo for your photography and so I do believe I've found mines after much testing and lots of reading and doing research.

I owned a K5 and afterwards a K5iis which I both sold. Now I regret having sold the K5iis. Still kept the lenses. I switched to a Samsung NX1 at the time. Not long afterwards they discontinued creating digital cameras. I still own a Pentax Q1. Lovely little camera. One day when the NX1 doesn’t work anymore I will definitely switch back to Pentax!

I've been shooting with Pentax since 1985, started off with a - you might have guessed it - K1000. Over the years the flock got considerably bigger. I still have (and use) my K1000 but I have added 2 MEs (1 with a winder), an MX, LX, KM, KX and K2. Ah, and a heap of 17 lenses, almost all primes. Even though I also use my K-5 DSLR from time to time, but I mainly shoot film.

Hi there Brian. Thanks a lot. The best software for pixel shift is Pentax’s silky pix software that I am aware of. I don’t tend to use it because I only use pixel
Shift on static matter. I shoot only in DNG. I have found it to be a better working file after years of post production
