    Hi Sara
This camera brings back memories. I used to have, may still have this camera and had different lenses for it. I loved this camera. I got interested in this camera as years ago I had a home computer called a Dragon 32. I got a basic electronic camera that plugged into the computer. It was very basic, black and white large pixels etc but it came with a Pentax lens. I ended up getting the Pentax camera. This is what got me into photography. I had the Pentax flash, and even had a motor that screws into bottom of camera that automatically winds film to next shot. Below are the lenses I had
    Pentax-110 24mm F2.8 Standard lens of 6 elements in 5 groups,
    Pentax-110 50mm F2.8 Telephoto lens of 5 elements in 5 groups
    Pentax-110 70mm F2.8 Telephoto lens of 6 elements in 5 groups
Pentax-110 20mm-40 mm F2.8 Zoom lens of 8 separate elements
I’m now gonna look around home to see if I can find it. I loved it so much .
Thanks again for the fond memories I had of that camera.

The camera Willem was using is not a range finder, it's a point and shoot. The Camera Sara was using is not like an SLR, it is an SLR. I purchased the Pentax Auto 110 Super in 1984 as a kit. It came with an auto winder, a flash and 3 lenses, 18mm, 24mm and 50mm, all f/2.8. The Auto 110 Super was a vast improvement over the Auto 110. The Super was a single stroke film advanced and it has an exposure compensation button on the front that helps with backlit subjects. I still have my Auto 110 Super kit and lots of memories of shooting with it. There was also a zoom lens and a 70mm lens that Pentax made.
Wonderful video, love seeing younger photographers rediscover cameras and film that I grew up with.

Cool video. Enjoyed the fun of it. Some precisions: the reason Willem's pictures got weird red spots all over is because he used a Lomography Tiger 200 film. The backing paper in those cardriges from Lomography seem to let some light in. Simple cure: put a piece of black gaffer tape over the little window at the back of the camera where the frame numers show up normally. Sara shot expired film which doesn't have this defect but her pictures turned out more grainy and washed out because it was expired film. Nothing wrong with the chemical processing.

The Pentax 110 does have automatic exposure. The Instamatic style camera has one, fixed exposure and fixed (no) focus. The Pentax 110 has the weirdest mechanics ever. The shutter and aperture are the same mechanism in the body. The lenses don't have any iris and all the lenses for the Pentax have to be 2.8 to support this weirdness.

Yea those old consumer cameras had only one exposure BUT color neg has a lot of latitude and over exposure could be printed down quite a bit at the lab. Under exposure is the danger zone however. I’m glad to see film make a comeback. I was raised on film in the 80’s and after my RIT college days spent the 90’s shooting 4x5 & medium format for all of my commercial work. I miss the discipline that film forced upon you. Also in the 90’s I did a lot of research photography for Eastman Kodak and when I used to shoot music videos it was on 16mm color and b&w neg so the absence of film in my day to day work flow leaves a big hole in my heart. I gotta get back into it and all you young kids too!! Kodak is down the street from my. You guys should come to Rochester for a Kodak tour it would make for a good episode. I’ll help connecting the dots and drive you around once the dust settles on this thing. lmk

OK, I'm old (child of the 1960s-70s), and I had a lot of experience shooting on 110 film. 110 wasn't the first point-and-shoot format, but it was arguably the first mainstream shirt-pocket camera format. Cameras like Sara's Pentax 110 SLR were curiosities. Most 110 cameras were long, slim rangefinder affairs, like the one Willem used in this video. Most had built-in strobe flashes. As I recall, the 110 rangefinders were among the first mass-market cameras that did. Most of the boxy, 126 film point-and-shoots that preceded them used flashcubes and variants thereof (X-type Magicubes, flashbars, etc.). The main limitation of 110 film is that it's a very small format, about half the area of a 35mm frame, so there were limits on how much you could enlarge the pictures, and the slightest amount of camera shake would make a photo unrescuably blurry. But until manufacturers figured out how to miniaturize 35mm point-and-shoots, 110 cameras were the only good choice for someone who wanted a camera that would fit in a shirt or suit jacket pocket. FYI, prior to 110 film, several major manufacturers experimented with ultra-small film cameras. My dad had a tiny Minolta camera that used proprietary film that was similar to the 110 format. He once tried to repack one of its proprietary cartridges with film taken from a 110 cartridge. It didn't work, because the Minolta film and the 110 film both used frames that were preprinted somehow on the film, and the Minolta's photos didn't line up.

the point with 110 film was to hit the cheap consumer market, but by the time this format was developed, 35mm film was relatively affordable. Another thing to note is the low resolution of the film, hence the low adoption rate. But this formate was wildly popular with the journalist market due to the fact that cameras can be incredibly discrete.

    Yeah the Pentax 110 !!!
Well known by the Pentaxians! But is nice to see people starts to approach back to Pentax which is (and still does gear) a great brand kicking asses of more popular brands in many photographic ways and styles ! Sara go get some Pentax gear and you'll see what I speak about :) In body stabilization now on Canon? Oh man! Well Pentax did that decades ago! Brand that made the first AF DSLR machine, sealed bodies rock solid DSLR machines, colours are way better than Canon or Nikon, same mount for the last 40-50 years (Pentax K) which make old amazing glass usable on today's DSLR cameras.... and so much more!

I grabbed a pentax Q off ebay a few months ago and it is a blast! Digital, not film but about the same size and the lenses are itty bitty

I love shooting 110, i have a vitoret El and it's a really cool 110 camera but it's had some issues... I have a Kodak 110 that works fine though!

Sara! Your video color correction is awesome! Is there a link to your cameraman?

I've used that 110 Lomo Tiger film and they all have orange spots. Not sure whether it's a fault or by design. I've had it on a couple of batches.

You have your own cameraman! The 110 format and cameras are what I started out on as a young kid back in the way 80s. You just pop the film in and remember to wind it on. Also make sure your finger is out of shot. I just bought a basic 110 camera at the market and have ordered new film. Can't wait to get back into it

The 110 cartridge is notched depending on the film speed (just like Super 8 film and cameras) and many 110 cameras have presets for aperture and shutter speed depending on the cartridge's notch!

10:55 “My emotions hurt.” Lol. Half-frame film cameras (like the Olympus pen f) are a great way to get a similarly small film camera, SLR, and more resolution compared to 110 film. Stick with the original pen F or FV vs the FT for a much better viewfinder experience. Still a little squinty though. On the bright side, Sara, when you make a mistake like you did with the R6 you rarely do it twice. So...don’t quit.

11:45 Somehow that film had a little bit of preexposure when you were installing it the camera. Sometimes light leaks in those cartridges so your first frame will be a little color shifted because of "light leak" you know what that is right? it's not just a digital effect, it actually happens! ;)

A series called “Willem in the Wild” where someone follows Willem around discreetly as he takes photos ala Animal Planet / Crocodile Dundee would be great 🤔
