Pentax MZ-S Review and Sample Photos

- Pentax's MZ-S represented the end of their high-end 35mm film lineage. It had the potential to kick off a new paradigm in camera-user interface, though the design never received a second version. Some of the design elements remain today in modern Pentax DSLRs, however. The MZ-S, though an oddity, has a strong, cult-like following. It lagged behind contemporary competitor flagship cameras in some specifications, but trounced them all in ergonomics and weight.

Finally - a video about the MZ-S! Bought one a few months ago and there were very few reviews. Great shots!
Thank you!
I've been pretty pleased with the MZ-S in a lot of ways. It's a lot of fun to use.
I have her for a month now and i am STUNNED on how easy to use she is for professional purposes! I also had a K20D since 2009 and i see so many similarities in the interface and usability!! I literally felt like home using it! Im i love! I found my favorite 35mm camera!
There's a whole lot of the design DNA in this camera that lives on even now in Pentax. They have a good and well designed interface -- no need to mess with success.
Thanks David.I just did a search and found this after I did a review of my Mzs on youtube. you are right about the deterioration of the rubbery seal on the bottom of the battery holder. So far my camera still works fine so I ignore that. I love the quirky little movie at the end.
Thank you!
Superb photos!
Thank you!
great pics and review
Thank you!
The Pentax Mzs was the last Pentax film camera I bought while still shooting film weddings. It was and still is I think my favourite Pentax camera.I heard when digital was starting up that the first Pentax Digital SLR was going to be based on the Mzs. I was itching to get it when it came out. After about 2 years of holding back they eventually brought out the Pentax *istD which had a similar feature set but not the same look as the Mzs.I have the battery pack and it is a great film camera. I coupled my Mzs with a Metz 45cl4 and a Quantum Battery 2 to do weddings. I was also able to use this with the *istD.Those were the days!
Nice! and yeah, there were some interesting cameras back these. I liked the MZ-S in general, for sure. The first Pentax DSLR was the prototype MZ-D (colloquial name) and it was very similar to this camera, yes. It worked and everything but never made it to market.
@@DavidHancock Thanks for your reply David. This camera was great but not without a little frustration in actual use.My other favourite was the Pentax Super A or Super Programme.I did lots of weddings with that also. The Pentax *istD is till my favourite Pentax DSLR.
Fantastically informative and detailed video
Thank you!
Very entertaining - bravo! I commend you on your script writing. Every once in a while, it's nice to hear the English language used correctly.
Thank you. These scripts go through a lot of revisions before I'm happy enough with them to record.
Great review!
Thank you!
Great video as always! I was reading on the Pentax forums about the plastic gear problem in this era of cameras. But most of the posts there say that the MZ-S likely has metal gears but it’s very unclear. Have you learned any more about this?
One of the repairmen I know and trust indicated there is a plastic gear on the motor for the mirror, IIRC, and that it is the weakness, but that overall the camera is exceptional.
@@DavidHancock thank you for the quick reply, David! I got one of these recently and can’t wait to start shooting with it. Even with the potential failure risk of the gears, I’m sure I’ll have a lot of fun while it lasts.
You have a wonderful way of speaking I was entertained and taught
Thank you!
David Hancock I cannot wait to start doing reviews for my camera collection I hope theyre as good as this
these photos are so unique, congrats on this poetic review and enjoyment!
Thank you!
Bismillah
Great video. What film do you recommend with the MZ-S?
Any 35mm film will work. Pick a film to your skill level and aethetic tastes. Is you're just starting, a cheaper film like Kentmere or Foma for black and white or the consumer stocks for Kodak and Fuji will work well. If you're experienced, take the ideas you have in mind for images to Flickr and search for different film stocks. Or search for them with a Google search and "sample photos" tacked onto the film stock name. That will give you a lot of ideas about how different films perform, how the images look, and what you can do to create the best photos with your film use.
How did you get your film grain to look like that? It looks extra filmy if that makes sense.
In which photos?
Great review. I have thought about getting one. I think it might be noisy and battery hungry and that has put me off. The ability to use a camera discreetly is a real thing for me. The Pentax image quality shone through even with the very grainy film you used. I almost forgot how film grain changed an image. We get very little penalty for wanting images to look grainless in digital. Film like portra and some of the high end Fuji print films would do better at not being overtly grainy. I like the way that digital allows us to change the gamma of the film and alter the saturation to give better detail and separation of picture elements. Pentax cameras are still amongst the best and still innovative but, they are a much smaller outfit now and that has been a difficulty in the cut-throat world of photography manufacturing. I might still buy an MZ-S it was misunderstood when it first arrived and Z1-p, that came before was still held to be one of the best cameras of the time but, as you said, this Pentax was going to be the archetype of a new series of trickle-down models which were in fact at that point less relevant, as the virtues of digital images were beginning to hit home. We could see that the outbreak of plastic fantastic cameras with cheaper lighter more disposable bodies, manufactured outside of Japan was a holding pattern which allowed the camera companies to gear up for the new school of digital photographic tools. Big companies managed the transition well. Small ones struggled Pentax included.
There were things I liked about the MZ-S and things I did not like. Ultimately I sold mine, but it was a good camera. They're a bit more expensive than comparable cameras of the same vintage, though, especially balancing their capabilities, because they are so uncommon.
Pop quiz - which one would you rather own, assuming you also get three lenses of your choice with it: EOS 3, MZ-S, Maxxum 7, or F100?
Having used all four, confidently the F-100.
@@DavidHancock Thank you very much. The F100 is what I was already targeting, but not having shot the MZ-S I was still questioning it.
Great review and for me it's the best SLR i've ever used, had mine about 4 years now and just recently picked up the battery grip. They are as rare as hens teeth in the UK but well worth the wait. However what was that nonsense at the end all about?
Thank you.
The nonsense at the end was just for fun.
Apologies, Pentax noob here. Will modern day lenses for K1 work with MZ-S?
Not all. The MZ-S requires an aperture ring on the lens for full functionality. I think that the modern Pentax lenses without aperture rings will work in program and shutter-priority but not in full manual and aperture priority, but I haven't tried that to know for certain.
Awesome music.
Yeah, UA-cam has some great selections that creators can use royalty-free.
MZ-S is very exotic and unique SLR Film.
And tons of fun to use!
Mz - s very beautiful camera
I concur.
I love that image - "snow trapped on a branch after a blizzard" - says it all. I wish I could afford this camera but the import duty to Ireland is prohibitive. Beautiful machine though. Spoiled by that awful mirror motor cog mechanism. I've lost three Pentaxes to that ogre! Which is why I bought a Canon EOS 50e to round out my collection of film cameras which include, by the way, the S1a, the SV, the MG, the P30t and the Super Programme A.
Thank you! I ended up selling my MZ-S, which on occasion I regret since I don't have an AF Pentax body anymore. But ultimately the little plastic cog is such a problem that I decided it was better to go with the older and more reliable bodies, even though these are extremely nice to use.
I firmly hold that the MZ-S is the best electronic camera Pentax ever designed, and as far as I'm concerned is the best SLR I've ever used.
It's solid. A couple weak points but I loved how it handled.
@@DavidHancock With Ricoh/Pentax reviving some of their past great ideas (the I-10 and MX-1 point and shoots and the LX-style replaceable grips on the KP), I'd love to see them revive the MZ-S design in a new body - the MZ-D risen from the ashes.
A review without ever showing the camera??? Do you not have it anymore?
I almost never show the camera in the reviews. The reviews are about the experience and results. The video manual series that details how to use the camera and all the functions, that will show only the camera. The video manual for this camera is written but not yet recorded.
Hey David, great video. Did you manage to record the manual for this camera?
