  • Review of the Pentax Spotmatic.
    Since the publication of my book "Photography: The F Manual", I received many questions about the best film and digital equipment to use, so I decided to start with review of the camera, lenses and accessories I use.

    Great video. I love my Spotmatics (I’ve got the SP, SPII, and F). My next fave is the Pentax KX. Very similar in many respects to the SP-F, but more modern, and way better than the K1000.

    Thanks for the video.
    The Pentax Spotmatic is one of my three favorite 35mm film cameras. The Nikon F2 and the Leica M6 are my other two.
    I own and use three Spotmatic bodies (one black and two chrome).
    I use the following M42 screw-mount lenses:
    Asahi 28mm f/3.5 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar (49mm filter)
    Asahi 35mm f/3.5 Super Takumar (49mm filter)
    Asahi 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar (8-element) (49mm filter)
    Asahi 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar (7-element) (49mm filter)
    Asahi 105mm f/2.8 Super Takumar (49mm filter)
    Asahi 135mm f/3.5 Super Takumar (49mm filter)
    Asahi 200mm f/5.6 Super Takumar (49mm filter)
    Asahi 300mm f/6.3 preset Tele Takumar (58mm filter)
    The 28/50/105 and 28/50/135 are my favorite three-lens kits.

      Thank you. You have a great collection of lenses for your Spotmatic. I have to get more lenses for it... but usually at the end I keep the money for medium format lenses.

    I have the F version. Beautiful camera. Just testing at the moment to see how it exposes with the 1.5v battery.

      If I remember correctly the F is supposed to work well no matter the voltage...

    Thank you for this video. It verified my decision to purchase a Spotmatic last week.
    I am getting into photography with a Fujifilm X-H1 that I purchased last month. I could not afford any autofocus lenses, so I bought a few vintage M42 lenses and an adapter. I really like learning first with manual focus. Also I only use manual exposure, sometimes with auto ISO.
    Having these M42 lenses, I thought to why not put them on a camera for which they were designed, and so now I can explore film photography with my Spotmatic, when it arrives.
    From your suggestion, I think now I will look around for a Spotmatic F also.

      Glad I was useful. When you buy check the meter, if it works is better :)

      @@LuigiBarbano Yes, that was my main concern... I bought it from eBay, and the seller said that the meter is 'responsive' but not tested. I took a chance, for $50. It should arrive in the mail soon, and I will let you know how it is! Maybe I will try to learn how to take it apart and do a CLA, and also am looking forward to trying out my nice vintage Takumars (as well as my Lentars and my Helios 44-2) on it.
      And of course I will be shooting with Black and White!

      @@NowOpenForLunch great, you will enjoy it! It's a very nice camera and you can always check the meter against your H-1

      Ha! This is the same way I got into film - though I use an X-T3. By the way...your X-H1 will make a great camera for scanning your negatives, when you get to that point. I use a 7Artisans 70mm macro. You will love it. If you are in the US, there is a great repairman who can get the meter working if that is a problem.

    @Luigi Barbano Can I use canon EF /EF-S Mount lenses in this camera?
    Do i need an adapter, what's it's name, where can I find it?

    • @LuigiBarbano
      @LuigiBarbano  Рік тому +1

      No, sorry, there is not an adapter to use canon lenses on M42 cameras. It's a matter of flange distance. You can use m42 lenses on Canon with an adapter but not viceversa.

    I'm lovin' the Pentax content! As a new Pentaxian, what made you stick with Pentax cameras?

    • @LuigiBarbano
      @LuigiBarbano  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks. I always found the quality/cost be great. I left Pentax only for digital, I had the need for good wide angles and with the APS-C was difficult to find them.
      But with film I just felt very good with Pentax.
      In future I will talk also about other brands... Running out of Pentaxes :D

      @@LuigiBarbano thanks for the response! I noticed that you have the X-pro1. I have the X-pro2 and just recently bought the Pentax K-1 and wow, perfect digital camera for old Pentax lenses. I'm using my old Pentax glasses and my Takumar collection with it. My AF trinity is the old Sigma 28mm 1.8, FA 50mm 1.7, and Tamron 90mm 2.8 1:1. Everything else is Takumars. :)

      @@ShutterKnack I have also the X-Pro2... the one filming... with an old Zeiss 50mm for Contax.
      I like Fuji because has the classic dials for iso/shutter/aperture and the image quality is great, beautiful lenses too.

    Bel canale, complimenti!!!
    Comunque credo che una buona parte dei takumar sia radioattiva

    • @LuigiBarbano
      @LuigiBarbano  4 роки тому

      grazie. Si` alcuni sono radioattivi. Di solito lo si riconosce dall giallo delle lenti.
      Non e` comunque un livello di radioattivita` alto. Ci sono tante cose cosi`, per esempio tutti gli orologi fluorescenti...
