When I started to learn free motion quilting, I did not want to invest in a supreme slider, so I used freezer paper with painters tape to hold it down. Worked great!
dcwatashi, interesting comment from someone who has only uploaded 13 videos in 6 years. Next, you did not ask the channel owner your question. You asked another YT viewer. Neither one is obligated, IMO, to answer your question. BTW, answer to your question is No and Cat's question is Yes.
Thanks so much for showing the "mistake" of tearing your Supreme Slider. Knowing myself, I would do the exact same thing and curse the day I paid so much for it.
All you need to do is wash it with warm water and I becomes tacky again. Also I tape down the edge of my supreme slider so that it will not come up. That will keep you from damaging the mat. Maybe you can write to the company and tell them what happened. They might replace your mat. You have nothing to lose for trying. Thanks for the insight of using the vinyl. That will be my backup plan for use of a bigger quilt.
Hi Lorena! I just found this video. Wow! What an eye opener!! The quilts shops say the Supreme Slider is the one and only way to go w/freemotion. After 3 months of thinking about it, I bought a smaller one and it moved the very first time I used it. So frustrating. Thank you so much for sharing your investigation and discovery into finding a more economical option!
I used a clear vinyl table cloth that I bought at Walmart cheap and used double sided tape, from my scrapbooking days to hold it onto the plate of my machine. It did not move.
Thats an awesome cost savings! Manufacturers just think we will pay anything for a gimmick..... Ive been holding off for a long time. Glad to hear about different alternatives!

Wow... join Lorena quilting Facebook group I would love to see your work and if you need anything I will try to help you... it’s a great group of ladies there too... thank you for your wonderful comment!
Thank you for your trial tutorial! Some of us can’t afford those items in the sewing tools market. I’m always looking for more economical ways for sewing tools. Thank you, again!
The vinyl is a super idea, nobody that I know is rich. I have also used a blue plastic tarp and taped it down to my ping-pong table. Very slick, large area, works great. Also roll up my quilt on pool noodles.
I quilt on vintage sewing machines and my slider ate finish off both machines. I don’t feel like I need any help with it sliding anyway. I also don’t use gloves. I do adjust presser foot pressure. I enjoy your channel.
Good ideas for alternatives, thank you. I've used leftover fingerpaint paper for fmq practise which worked pretty well, but didn't tape it down so might try again for the quilt.
I was wondering if the silicone mats for baking, I have one that is heavy and you use some kind of those things you stick to your cutting rulers would work?
I use a silicone baking mat on my sit down and it works the same as the super slider. I hold it down with painter's tape. The SS bobbin washers are awesome for FMQ on a home machine.
I use some left over drawer liner from Ikea. Put the bubble side down. Mark the slick side with a sharp marker mark your cut out. Using an exact knife and my cutting board I cut the hole. I use masking tape in a couple spots to secure it. Lasts forever costs around $1.
Teflon oven sheets from Amazon about $5.00 A friend of mine uses the super slider but she got the Teflon sheets on the side and one on the backside to decrease the drag when quilting. The sliders do need to be washed with water.
You got my juices going too! You mentioned about waxing the machine, but maybe you can wax the vinyl sheet and it wouldn't get in the crevices of the machine. Also, when you lift the vinyl sheet up, to keep it from wrinkling maybe you could roll the paper backing onto an empty paper towel roll with the shiny side out and then when you have to lift the vinyl up off the machine to replace the bobbin you can easily roll it onto the paper towel roll and avoid wrinkles and air bubbles. Just a few thoughts. I have a Supreme Slider and I know you are supposed to wash the pink side occasionally to keep it tacky. I also was thinking about how to make it re-tacky again by using Aleene's Tack it Over and Over glue. I use that to make my Cricut mats sticky again and when my Supreme Slider loses its stickiness I might give that a try. See I told you you had my juices going too. Thank you. I love thinking outside the box and doing things on the cheap.
H Gore I really appreciate your comment! It got me thinking some more! I'm going to wash my supreme slider and see if I could get it to stick again! Thank you it's awesome!
Wax might yellow my new machine. Vinyl's a no for the reason you said. I have lots of Teflon element so i will try different things. I might buy the Supreme Slider on a Joann's special only.
Really stupid question here. But wouldn't just using a craft knife and cut around the bobbin assembly housing making a trap door so to speak as opposed to having to lift the entire section?
Perfect! I changed bobbins about six times in short order, and I couldn't see lifting up a sticky sheet of anything that often. I don't see why cutting a hole for the bobbiin casing would hurt; for FMQ your are really concerned about a small area of fabric, and I think cutting away only around the feed dogs and the bobbin door would give you plenty of slide. I'll try it with the clear vinyl from Joanns, where there may be different thicknesses; that was a good answer as well. I had tried waxed paper but didn't think about taping it down - parchment paper might work as well. When I spray baste I find impossible not to get some on the batting that has to extend past the body of the quilt. Even without running into the spray basting sticky spots, I find that I create a big stitch from the lacking a totally sticky surface. Thanks for all the suggestions and thanks for the video, Lorena! BTW, Rebecca, there are NO stupid questions. Ellen
Hi, Lorena, I'm from Brazil and i'm searching to buy Supreme Slider, but here is very expensive (like 60 dollar the small). Can you indicate to me any store online to buy that? Thank you so much!
Do you have amazon ? Con-Tact Brand Creative Covering Self-adhesive Vinyl Shelf and Drawer Liner, Clear Gloss (Pack of 6) Copy this name and it should take you to the link
When I first started FMQ, i used the vinyl you can cover furniture with, or even a vinyl tablecloth I would cover a large area. As all my quilts I made I free motioned quilted using my domestic machine...They both worked well ..later black Teflon over liners came along and they work well too. I would cut a small hole for needle and tape the edge down...
Silicon spray works great. Spray on a cloth and “wax” your machine table. Make sure no silicone residue is left. Same think happened with my super slider. It shifted and the needle ate a big hole in my super slider.
thankyou for this! may I ask: what extension table did you get for your machine? I was raised on cabinet machine, and I'm struggling with using my portable on my big table? I would like a larger surface and have thought about simply getting an old sewing machine with a cabinet and putting my machine into that cabinet, but am wondering about the extension tables. I don't supposed you'd want to do a video on that? ;-)
My portable Brother DZ2400 came with a table but I do not use it since I was able to purchase a table that lowers my machine to level with table top. Big difference with ergonomics. What I do for a larger surface is I have two tables perpendicular to my sewing table [like a U shape] and have even added my ironing board to the left to make a wider surface so there is not the hanging weight issue of a quilt. Works great for me!
Rebecca Calvillo I cut a 12x8 piece off of the roll and cut a small opening for the feed dogs. I also ended up catching the slider and cut a bigger whole! I hope I answered your question!
Read the instructions , your supper slider, you need to clean the pink sider . Also you could have taped the slider down ,so that it wouldnt move . I also heard that the plastic sleds are also slippery enough to use for free motion quilting. Hope this helps you
The Supreme Slider directions state that the pink side should be kept clean with a damp wipe. so it sticks well. The company will replace your Supreme Slider if you contact them. The e-mail is on the package.
Pat LaPierre I have cleaned it and still have issues with it moving as I'm quilting! I appreciate your comment ! The supreme slide is a wonderful product, but some of my viewers were asking for a product that was still able to do the same as a supreme slider but on the cheap! The supreme slider has some limitations- like pricing ( this product isn't cheap) and you are only able to get it in two sizes! Also the issues of it losing its tackiness! I appreciate your comment!! Lorena
Lorena - just yesterday I purchased a large piece of vinyl at Walmart - I am talking a piece twice the size of a large dining table - it was on clearance for $2.75. My main purpose for the trip there was to look to see what I could use as the Super Slider is just too expensive for me - I usually work on King size quilts and I get drag from the many different surfaces I have to use when I am quilting. I am thinking positive that this will work - I might have to tape it down in a few areas but that is alright too - when you look at the difference in price - I will get back with you and let you know how it worked :)
The supreme slider comes with instructions to clean with water to wash the lint off the back, then I swipe the water off with my hand, and replace it. Back to normal.
My sweet 16 came with a heavier version of a supreme slider which reminds me of a shower wall. I didn't bother with it for my first 12 quilts but realize my shoulders and body get a much easier time using it and I now do.more quilting easier. I still had to blue tape it in place as it slides too with thicker quilts. Anyway odd left overs of shower walls might work for someone else.
I’m sorry I disappointed you. And I’m sorry about the lights this video was done when I honestly didn’t know what I was doing .. but I appreciate you time and thank you for your comment. I did clean it and did research how to clean it. and after a while it still didn’t stick .. after a while the slider doesn’t hold and it moves when trying to custom quilt something.

How do you remove the residual from the double-sided tape?
I would think that alcohol would do it well.

I've been using a clear vinyl from Hobby Lobby, the one that is on the rolls. Sticks great. Good video cuz it gives us options. Thanks, Lorena.

Yes - you need to wash off the backing on the Supreme Slider with warm running water to re-invigorate the stickiness
