      I'm glad I'm not alone. I am 67 so have no time to waste on the crap that has sweet FA to do with quilting on how their aunt's husband's first cousin once removed daughter's boyfriend's mother's distant cousin...my eyes glaze over and I switch off physically and metaphorically.

    This was probably the BEST video tutorial regarding machine binding that I have seen - and I've been watching everything regarding quilting for years. I especially appreciated the application of the binding with about an 1/8th of an inch of the quilt backing fabric showing. A light-bulb went off! Why didn't I ever think of that? It's easy to see how this relatively simple step will improve accuracy and appearance. I am FMQ the last two bordered sides of a huge quilt and am actually looking forward to binding it! Always, always looking for an easier or better or more efficient way of doing things and you checked all three boxes. THANK YOU! I believe some folks are born with a knack for teaching that no amount of college can impart. Sharing your knowledge and 'how-to' with others in a way they can understand and put to use - and actually find joy doing so in the process - is a GIFT. Still learning all I can in my 80th year.

    I have tried and tried, but 2.5 inches does NOT work for me. I cut MOST of my binding strips at 3". I know, the quilt police will have me Drawn & Quartered. But they look beautiful for me this way. I put my pressed binding strip inside a plastic grocery bag and tie it loosely shut. Then, I place it in my sewing garbage pan, so the strip will feed upward to the sewing machine and out of my way. 🎉

    I like bigger bindings too. I use 2.5" also, but i am now going to try leaving a little of the quilt showing (instead of lining up the edges of the binding and the quilt) - this is actually grading the seam "as you go", which will result in less bulk at the edge - love it! 😊

    • @nancyarchibald9095
      @nancyarchibald9095 11 місяців тому +3

      This accomplishes the same thing as cutting strips 3" wide or more. Actually, staggering the seam allowances like that will make it ALL less bulky. (Easier to miter corners too.) Next time, I'm going to cut the binding even wider to 3.25" wide and stagger the allowances. Arthritic fingers that are puffy and frozen do not lend themselves well, to tiny maneuvers anymore.

      Oh! I think I get this! I only watched it like 50 times trying to understand the little 1/8” your leaving of the quilt edge and how you have enough to wrap around to front. So, yes, I did math and it actually provides you an 1/8” more binding to wrap! And since you graded it, there is less bulk to wrap the binding over. You are sewing 1/4” (2/8’s) from binding edge & 1/8” of quilt which is 3/8” total SA. Until I did the math I wasn’t understanding. The binding is 1.25”=10/8’s. You lose 2/8’s of binding sewing it to back. To wrap to front you have to fold over the 3/8’s total SA, which leaves you 5/8 of binding to the front. However, bulk will take up a smidge maybe but you have at least 1/2” (4/8’s).

Once developed for every aspect of quilting, things go much faster/smoothly. I, like many, relied on on Sharon Schambers video. Your video is very straight forward an helpful and will save many time and frustration!

    Ahh that’s exactly the way I do my bindings with 2.25” strips. I might try your tip for doing 2.5 a little away from the edge for a tiny bit wider binding. I learned the tip about the 1/8 opening a few years ago from a Janome instructor and felt it was the greatest tip since sliced bread. You are the only person I’ve seen demonstrate that on UA-cam. I respect a hand binding any day but in our day of automatic washers I feel the machine binding is best for anything that will be washed. I do quilts to give away so machine it will be.

    Your join method for the ends is BRILLIANT and simple! Even better, it combines the last two "go to" methods I've used but simplfies both even further so I won't need to have the printed instructions in front of me every time. Thank you for sharing!!

    I’ve just finished my cot sized quilt and your binding instructions were invaluable. I followed them with my iPad open and the tutorial on play and rewind and amazingly got that final join just right (as you said)! I’m not well known for following instructions but I stuck with it and am so happy with the binding. Again, many thanks!

    Thank you so much! You explained this so well! I really struggled with closing my binding. I'm on my 4th quilt, a gift for my son. I used this method and it is perfect. And also leaving a little room sewing the binding on would have great when I first started. You ladies on UA-cam are such a blessing!

    I have just now found this!! Ms. Merry Mabel…if I could hug you I would!! I have been “dabbling” with quilting for a long time. I have always wanted to learn binding because it’s intimidating to me. Your video is PERFECT for me!! Like happy tears!! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this!
    I have always pinned and clipped and yada yada but this is just what I needed to see and hear. Your voice and the way you present it and your detail is exactly what I needed. God bless you!

    Thank you. Beginner quilter here. Just blew my mind. Finished my quilt this afternoon. Lots of errors but it looks good to me and the binding was added by machine...almost straight I might add. :)
