@@shspurs1342 I wouldn't really be able to consider the Pumpkins to be grunge. Grunge was a Seattle thing that everyone and their mother started imitating after Nirvana released Nevermind and hit it big, but the Pumpkins are out of Chicago and their first LP was Gish, which dropped four months before Nevermind and seems more like a psychedelic rock album than the punk-inspired grunge movement of Nirvana and Soundgarden.
True. If he checked out Tales of a Scorched Earth he'd get what he had been expecting previously. haha. And then at the extremely soft end of the scale he could go for Meladori Magpie or Stumbleine or Autumn Nocturne ;)
And I agree about them being diverse - they have done more electronic type stuff, soft acoustic stuff, ear-shredding metalesque stuff, great rock tunes, great pop tunes ... the list could go on.
I knew you was going to hit us with a hold on bruuuuh at the end. The Smashing Pumpkins have these melodic bits in a lot of their songs. It's the details.

This is my favorite SP song . The intertwining guitars and quiet parts give me goosebumps. I like how the album version ends mellow, but live, they revive the wall of sound. I’ve seen them live twice.
Some more awesome, yet obscure tracks from them... Mayonnaise, Ava Adore, Geek USA, Love, Eye, etc. Popular songs that people hear all the time... Tonight Tonight, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Zero, Today, Cherub Rock, 1979 New songs that are pretty decent... Knights of Malta, Solara, Quasar... My favorite ones no one ever talks about... Pug, Everlasting Gaze, Daphne Descends, Glass and the Ghost Children, The End is the Beginning is the End, In My Body
Since ‘94 here, when they released Rocket as a single. It’s nice to see someone else that’s stuck with the band thru the years. So many people jumped ship when Adore came out.
I'll admit that the last few years, I've dropped off a bit, but they are still my first love. Adore is what made them gold in my eyes... And, gun to my head, both Machinas are my favorite albums.
Oh Preston, now you've done it. Long have I waited for this glorious day. Here are the three Pumpkins tracks you have to do next. "Disarm" "Disarm" And "Disarm"
Thank you! I've been waiting for one of the music reaction channels to do a reaction to a Pumpkins song that wasn't released as a single. Those of us who have been fans for decades have always known that their 'commercial' songs weren't a real reflection of how good the band could be. There's so much gold hidden away from the casual listener. If you loved the ending of this then you really need to listen to their song 'Hummer'.
This is probably my favorite Pumpkins song. So deep. I’m actually a little surprised (impressed?) you picked it, since it’s a little lesser known and wasn’t released as a single or anything. Glad you like it 👍
The look on your face when that acoustic ending started was pure youth and excitement. The youth is wasted on the Young was a famously quoted phrase by George Bernard Shaw speaking on how young people are pretty much brainless and squander a lot of great opportunities with the excuse of being young. But the purity that he’s talking about is you know faith will help you to escape. And how the end of that song brings back that purity that childlike nature, the pure consciousness, which is pretty much, what I saw when you were listening to it. Also, if you listen to his podcast for the newest album, they came out with Ruby is a robot and it’s almost like someone without a soul is observing the world around them in a pure way without emotion calling out the culture for what it is.
Glad you appreciated that last bit. I used to put the record on and fast forward to that part as a kid because I needed to hear it. Smashing Pumpkins has a lot of good varied content. Check out Raindrops + Sunshowers!
*Fantastic reaction* as always, Preston! 🤘🏻🔥 So glad you reacted to the Pumpkins♥️ Love them! *Just reminded me when you said "peace of mind", lol. I wanted to suggest a few songs by the band Boston: “Peace of Mind", "Foreplay/Long Time" & "Don't Look Back". “More Than A Feeling" is another great one. Tom Scholz is the genius behind the band along with unbelievable vocals by Brad Delp (RIP😢💔). They were huge in the 70s & considered innovative due to Scholz's guitar sound, which no one had heard prior, apparently. Fantastic band!
Why have I not had your videos come up in my feed before? One of my favorite reaction videos ever. I forgot about that ending, but you nailed it. Such a beautiful, moving close to the song.

I am super glad your first experience with the Smashing Pumpkins was with my favorite deep track by them. I honestly only knew the most popular songs like 1979 and Today until I really dug into their whole catalogue.
Great to see you discovering the Pumpkins and getting so much out of it. They're one of the greatest bands of the 90s, big on technique, big on soul, and they had a huge impact on me when I was growing up. This song is in my top 5 Pumpkins tracks, along with Hummer, Mayonaise (yeah, they spell it wrong), Soma and Tonight Tonight. I've always felt they have a strong connection with The Cure, Pixies, and even Depeche Mode, but of course they have a lot of Metal influences too. It all helps to make their music really varied and interesting, and it doesn't hurt that Billy Corgan is a songwriting genius ;) The lyric that gives you goosebumps is inspired by the great Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw: "What a pity that youth must be wasted on the young". If Billy Corgan was going to be inspired by anyone, it might as well be one of the best ;)
Not only did you pick one of my FAVORITE all time bands but you picked MY FAVORITE underappreciated song by them. makes me want to break out my Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness, and then The Aeroplane Flies High box set. SOOOOO many memories rocking out to such amazing lyrics
@@Chyrnobyl66 Though it's not my favorite, It's still one of the good ones. Just because it's the most popular doesn't delude that fact. CrabJock Totally get your point, but I’d like to get his take on it for pure entertainment value. And perhaps some folks on this channel aren’t as familiar. They have so, so many wonderfully amazing songs! I can't wait to see you uncover more of them ;)
Next: Smashing Pumpkins - Galapogos 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Great to see you discovering the Pumpkins and getting so much out of it. They're one of the greatest bands of the 90s, big on technique, big on soul, and they had a huge impact on me when I was growing up.
This song is in my top 5 Pumpkins tracks, along with Hummer, Mayonaise (yeah, they spell it wrong), Soma and Tonight Tonight. I've always felt they have a strong connection with The Cure, Pixies, and even Depeche Mode, but of course they have a lot of Metal influences too. It all helps to make their music really varied and interesting, and it doesn't hurt that Billy Corgan is a songwriting genius ;)
The lyric that gives you goosebumps is inspired by the great Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw: "What a pity that youth must be wasted on the young". If Billy Corgan was going to be inspired by anyone, it might as well be one of the best ;)
Type O Negative - All Hail and Farewell to Britain
I'm so disappointed nobody has reacted to that song yet and I suggest it all the time
Bro, I'm so happy you did this song instead of one of their big hits! Such a good song!
For smooth and melodic. Please do Smashing Pumpkins "Soma" or "Luna". In fact. ANYTHING off of Siamese Dream is good.
Disarm still one of my all-time favorites
For sure. classic.
Luna is so awesome. As you said the whole album is a beautiful Trip
Soma
Not only did you pick one of my FAVORITE all time bands but you picked MY FAVORITE underappreciated song by them. makes me want to break out my Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness, and then The Aeroplane Flies High box set. SOOOOO many memories rocking out to such amazing lyrics
Cherub Rock and Solara are soooooo good.
Smiled the whole time watching you watch the ending :D
Smashing pumpkins have lots off good songs..
Bullet with butterfly wings
i agree they have a lot of good songs ...then why suggest their most popular, most mainstream, most overplayed song ever
@@Chyrnobyl66 Though it's not my favorite, It's still one of the good ones. Just because it's the most popular doesn't delude that fact.
Sometimes the hits are made for mainstream appeal, but this one wasn't. It's worth the praise. Overplayed is just a matter of circumstance.
Deep cuts aren't always the best
CrabJock Totally get your point, but I’d like to get his take on it for pure entertainment value. And perhaps some folks on this channel aren’t as familiar. He’s turned me on to some good stuff I’d never heard before. Maybe this slipped past the younger audience, or the folks that never saw Whale Wars?
Earned a sub. No one really covers these guys let alone this song.
Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
Dude, you’re about to dive into one of the greatest bands to come out of the nineties. There are too many great songs to name. If I were you, I would crank up “SOMA!!!” Captures all of the pumpkins. You cant go wrong with whatever you decide to proceed with though. Love the channel, keep it up. Makes me feel like I’m hearing these songs for the first time again
Hummer is going to change your life my dude. I love thru the eyes of ruby, but i've always felt it was the spiritual successor to Hummer. It's my fav pumpkins tune still after 25 years.
9:10 the way your face relaxes is just beautiful. Pure happiness in that moment.
Soft, beautiful and deep. Really a delicious Pumpkins song. Now, try XYU ;)
That's the same song I'm suggesting
Bro. Sir. Man. Dude. Guy. You struck gold. Good job! There is much more to come. Keep it up! The rabbit hole is just opening for you. Head first sir. Head first!
Ladies and gentlemen, The Smashing Pumpkins!!
My fav SP tune. Showcases Jimmy’s drumming abilities as Everlasting Gaze does too. Wish I could go back 25 or so years and hear this tune again for the first time as you did. This song damn near brought me to tears and still blows me away
X.Y.U might be more the sound you were anticipating from them.
respect great reaction, I had forgotten how fucking good this track was , has actually been about 15 years since i heard this ...thanks :D
Where I end and you beging - Radiohead (From the basement)
Btw my fav song from the smashing pumpkins is Zero
What an amazing reaction to an equally amazing song! So many reactions to the overplayed songs, it's nice to see a reaction that I don't think got any air play, only the true SP fans know this song. They are one of my all-time favorite bands! Do Mayonaise next!
Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day
Heart-Shaped Box - Nirvana
Wet Sand - Red Hot Chili Peppers
😂
I can’t put into words how stoked I am that you reacted to the Pumpkins and that you chose this song. Billy Corgan has written many more songs that will blow your mind lyrically and musically. Also check out his poetry book “Blinking with Fist”. Please react to more SP. I suggest Porcelina of the Vast Oceans and SilverFuck.
Buckethead - Soothsayer
I've never commented on any youtube video before, but I've been watching your channel for a bit. I love the Tool, Metallica, and Alice in Chains reactions (I love all of them, but I really enjoy those bands so it is fun to see you react). I was so happy to see you react to a Smashing Pumpkins video. The album that Thru the Eyes of Ruby is on has been with me for most of my life. I saw the Pumpkins on tour for this album in fact. I'd love if you listened to more.
Smashing pumpkins- glass and the ghost children
