This song is so ironicly played in strip clubs. It is about a person at the bottom of their depression spiral looking to feel anything at all at the expense of their lover. It is about one sided selfish sexual exploitation to give meaning to their own existence. Listen more closely to those lyrics within that context and you will see just how dark this really is.
Aww, Don't be so negative lol , to me it's the most beautiful love song ever written 🤗
I don't think they play it ironically, I think they play it missing the irony like this guy does. Stone Temple Pilots' "A Sex Type Thing" was really popular in strip clubs, because people don't realize that it's about rape.
very good & logical interpretation. i agree.
@@moonlily1 I don't think they meant that strip clubs play it ironically. They meant that it's ironic that they play it not knowing the meaning.
Now your getting somewhere yo...nine inch nails is forever
NIN is no joke. Trent Reznor is musical genius. He producers a ton of movie tracks now.
he even worked on the sound track for Ken Burns Vietnam doc... owo
The band is only for touring most of everything else he does himself when recording in the studio.
Also did watchmen series score..theres none that compare to trent..
mj dia the watchmen score is so damn fire
@@wiz_dropbomb2134 it's so good..it literally makes me proud to be such a big fan of his because of what hes accomplished and how much hes expanded from nin

No big deal in this one, just the band logo.

Or he could check out the Happiness in Slavery video for a real mind F.

Also, a reaction to the video of Closer would be cool too.
"Yo, this explicit.... ". I don't know why, but this killed me, lol.
This song is from the same album as Hurt, you should check that out too as I see you did the Cash version already.

This was my grandma's favorite song when I was young. Makes me think of her whenever I hear it. RIP granny.
Trent Reznor is a musical genius! Since the 80’s he’s been a step ahead of the game. Even the recent soundtracks that he’s done for theater are great. I’ve grown up listening to his journey through life. You can definitely feel the emotions and events that controlled his musical development. From a troubled young man battling addiction to becoming one of the most sought after artists of all time! Respect ✊!

Haha. You have good tastes in music
It’s a beautiful thing when someone discovers Nine Inch Nails. 🤯
Now you have 25 more albums LPS, EPs, rare crazy stuff
One man band.
I was blown away when i first heard NIN and found out there was only 1 one guy in the band! So talented...just hired musicians to pull off a live show
Adam Lukasiewicz I was in 8th grade when this came out. It’s always felt futuristic. Even now
@Brian Cairns Wikipedia isnt always 100% but according to the early history of the band listed there.... Reznor was unable to find a band that could articulate the material as he desired, so (inspired by Prince) he played all the instruments except drums himself. He has continued to play most parts on Nine Inch Nails recordings ever since.
I would love more history on the band if you can point me to more information about the early days.... Provide me a link or two so i can educate myself on NIN history
@@Dude1971Dad His early work is recorded by the author Anne Rice in the biopic The Vampire Lestat
@Brian Cairns Trent writes and performs all his songs. the groups is assembled for touring purposes only, and with the exception of Ghosts 1-4 and some tracks on Year Zero have nothing to do with writing the songs.
Finally NIN!
Hit up Wish or March of the Pigs or Head Like a Hole next!
A M Wish performed live with The Dillinger Escape Plan(full band) maybe? One of my fave live performances and I think it provides a hyped/raw feeling the studio version can’t get.

Everything on Pretty Hate Machine is pure gold.
I like how the look on his face is always surprised as the song gets progressively dirtier :D
"I appreciate their honesty." No dude, I appreciate YOUR honesty. When everyone reacts to this song theyre all like "Its a good song." When you can obviously see they hate it. You , on the other hand, are awesome and actually tells the truth. Keep it rockin bro.
PLEASE LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE DOWNWARD SPIRAL ALBUM!!!! It's like one giant song, one of the best albums I've ever heard. PLEASE!!!!!!
Yes! So true! Each song segues into the next perfectly. Trent pays so much attention to detail.
YES! The Downward Spiral = BEST ALBUM EVER!
It's a nervous breakdown set to music
Might be too much for him.
Anything Trent did during and/or before this album is amazing. You should listen to it all.
I have a feeling you'll really enjoy diving into NIN's material. Trent Reznor is definitely a creative genius in his own right. Until recently, almost all of the arrangements were written by him. NIN was only really a full band while touring, with different members switching out from time to time.
As for Closer, the song is surprisingly deeper than how it sounds on the surface when it's taken in context of the whole album. It's one way that self-destructive behavior manifests while on the downward spiral. Hurt being the closing song of the album is super powerful, as it ends in regret of the terrible choice that was ultimately made: "If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find a way".
Written by him and recorded by him using multiple tracks. The band only got together (to practice, I should think.) to go on tour. Trent couldn't very well play all the instruments at once. That's the story I've always heard since I became a follower in '94. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
This song always makes me think " this is what INXS wouldve sounded like if Hutchence was more of a psycho...🤣
His solo album that was coming out had quite an industrial rockish area he was going into... its quite good and i feel he would have really evolved if he well, lived on.
Just because a person looks normal and likes pop music doesn't mean they're NOT fucked up. Hutchence was a drug addict whose death was either suicide or a terrible mistake during attempted autoerotic asphyxiation. Trent lived to see his 50s and Michael didn't. Just sayin'. Maybe Trent uses his music to get his dark shit out in a healthy way. He's a family man now.
You've got a point
I'll always think this now! 🤣
I’ve never agreed more with a comment.
LOVED that ur like a kid on christmas with this... was really different! Trent reznir is awesome

This was my first time hearing this too. That was fucking amazing! I'm a huge Bowie fan, so had listened to a couple of NIN tracks before, in the wake of their collaboration with David. I'd really enjoyed them and had intended to look into more of their stuff but somehow never got round to it. I shall have to remedy that! This means that you can now claim, legitimately, that you succeeded, where David Bowie failed... In this one instance, at least. ;) :)

Jason Magistro Yes. Trent Reznor from Nine INCH Nails is Awesome. Truly talented.
Evan Moore as well as Gone Girl, Bird Box, The Facebook movie, and a WW2 documentary. Trent kills it. His precision is very similar to Tool, in the sense that everything he does, has a purpose.
Jason Magistro I believe he also worked with Jonah Hill on the soundtrack for his movie Mid90s haha
Trent Reznor did the soundtracks to Social Network, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and a ton of other films, (won an Oscar for Social Network - his first attempt at soundtrack music). Brilliant songwriter and composer!
NIN is actually my favorite band haha. His music is one of a kind and he was SO innovative for his time. Pretty Hate Machine (first album) is my favorite album of all time, the whole album is so good. You should do a reaction to all the songs from it. My favorites however:

-Down in it
-Head like a hole

-Sanctified
-Terrible lie

Fun fact: Trent Reznor rented a home at 10050 Cielo Dr. In Los Angeles. The home of Sharon Tate and the site of the infamous Charles Manson murders of her and 4 people there. He converted the house to a studio to specifically record this album "The Downward Spiral". Sharon's sister lashed out at him for attempting to capitalize on her murder. He assured her that wasn't the case but ended up moving out .. removing the front door that originally had the word PIG written in Sharon's blood on it. He took it to New Orleans where it was installed at a recording studio.
Fun fact:Trent Reznor just worked on the score for the movie Bird Box.

Aside from possibly being the most improbable radio hit of all time, what I love about "Closer" is how it takes such a simple beat and builds on it... and builds on it... and builds on it until the very end when it's all stripped away. With the exception of a couple of the bridges in the song, the beat is there, constantly, providing a foundation and driving it ever onward. People might get caught up by the chorus lyrics, but it's a song with a surprising amount of depth to it.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross do film scores too now, they just did Bird Box and Trent won an Oscar for Social Network soundtrack!
Reznor also did the soundtrack of Quake, one of the most influential and iconic video games in existence. It's a bit of a stretch to call most of it 'music' though, since it's more like an ambient soundtrack, creating a scary, disturbing, and downright oppressive atmosphere.
NaHCO3 I wouldn’t say it was a stretch. I’m actually a film composer and most modern scores are very heavy on the sound design elements.

I seriously like kicking it with you Preston, big fan of your channel man. My personal favourite NIN release is "Broken" and the songs "Last" and "Wish". All the best, and a late happy new year to you.
You should check out the song "Wish" by Nine Inch Nails. That was the song that first hooked me and IMO it's still one of the loudest and most angst ridden songs of all time. As an extra bonus I think you might like "Happiness In Slavery" too off their Broken EP. And if you're wondering why the song just ends abruptly, it's because Trent Reznor was a master at doing that on early NIN records. If you listen to this on the full Downward Spiral album as soon as that last note hits it goes right into the next song "Ruiner" as if it was one continuous song.
Oh hell yeah, this is gonna be dope.
Happy new years, y'all.

My favorite Nine Inch Nails song is "Last" off their Broken album. They were pretty popular with the goth crowd back in high school. Then White Zombie got popular then Marilyn Manson, had that macabre kind of feel that goth people really liked. I was part of that group for a while, but never really got into Marilyn Manson. Gotta check out "Last", freakin awesome song.

Gave Up changed my life
My personal all time favorite NIN track. The opening riff is just a punch in the face and Trent's vocals are as aggressive as it gets.
The lead singer does major movie soundtracks as well like the Academy Award winning Facebook movie “The Social Network” and “Gone Girl” with Ben Affleck. Gone Girl had such an ethereal, ambient soundtrack. Look up “Sugar Storm”. Starts off peaceful and then distorted chaos....
