    I was 5 years old when I saw the first Smokey and the Bandit film, and from that day on, I was a Petrol Head. The star of the show for me was actually the Kenworth W900A. But the Trans Am ran it a very close second. Such an iconic car.

    I bought my Trans Am from the same guy who sold me his home! Sadly he was dying of cancer and had no need of them. He sold me the car for $1,500, which is what he owed on the loan back then. That was one fast car! Didn't do well in the snow or ice, and it sucked when I had my tee-tops stolen! I was sitting in a bar after work, and it was snowing! Great time to hit me!

    I have always love the Pontiac Trans-Am ever since I first saw one way back in 1977
    at a car auction here in the UK. I saw the car long before the movie came out. But
    Wow what a great looking car, I think I spent nearly all day looking at it, while my
    father was busy looking at the boring euro-boxes we had over here in the 1970's.
    I've seen, and photographed quite a few T/A's since then. I suppose I'll just have to
    make do with my 1;18 die cast replica.

    This was a fantastic tribute and look back at the movie and the pop culture of 1977 and of course a great modern interpretation of the original car. Hard to believe that it will be the 40th Anniversary this year!. Smokey and the Bandit becomes better as time passes.In this day and age of PC, Euro 6 emissions, autonomous cars and social media...Smokey and the Bandit becomes more endearing and nostaligic.

    In the 80s, my buddy's dad had a 74 Trans Am. Same car as the Bandit, basically, but with round headlights. It had the shaker scoop and the bird decal. His was bright red, and had a 455 with a Holley 850 Double Pumper and Doug Thorley headers on it, hooked to an M22 Muncie 4 speed, with a 3.73:1 posi rear end. It was fast as fuck.

  • @dw8840
    @dw8840 8 років тому +34

    He says the black and gold paint scheme was new for a production Trans Am. *Incorrect*. Pontiac released the special edition Trans Am (black with gold accents) for the 1976 model year. For 1977 they changed the rims from honeycomb to snowflake, they redid the nose and the 455 was dropped leaving the 400 and 403 engines.
    Also he says that Smokey And The Bandit "started" the CB craze. This is also *incorrect*. The CB craze was born from two things: (1.) the fuel crisis of 1974 and (2.) the 55 mph national speed limit. Because then the CB was used to (1.) ask which gas stations were open and (2.) where the cops were running speed traps.
    The ONLY thing Smokey And The Bandit may have had a hand in as far as CB's go, is to help propel sales of the CB, even though it didn't need help; CB originally was 23 channels, but the "fad" that came from it due to the gas crisis and 55 speed limit, caused a massive use to where the radio was jammed with users; thus on Jan 1 1977, the FCC allowed for an extra 17 channels to be added, making 40 channels total. Smokey And The Bandit came out around May of 1977.

      @melrose9252 6 років тому +3

      David Welsh In 77, Pontiac offered 3 engines. A 403/185 for the enviro wackos in California, a 6.6 Liter/400/180 hp and the T/A 6.6/400/200hp in 77 that went to 220 hp in 78. These 400 would romp the 76 455’s. I bought a new 78 TA 6.6 in Oct. 77 and it tore the Z’s and 76 455 a new butt hole.

      @jeffreymayer8550 6 років тому +2

      @@melrose9252 The cars engines were assembled by hand so there were differences on each one if they were stock. just because you beat one 455 doesn't mean you would beat all 455s or 350s for that matter as they were all the same block the bore was different on the Pontiac, for instance after being around over 40+ 2 gen birds the fastest birds were a 70 formula 400 4speed a 75 formula 350. Slowest 2nd gen 78 marti blue with 400. So it depends on who put it together.. If you wanted power on them you removed the cat, headers and ran duals all the way back with straights or your choice of mufflers ( turbos were popular back in the day) ported the heads, changed the carb, for an edelbrock usually, sanded the block to make it smooth where the heads went on, put on an aluminum intake, and changed the cam. Simple improvements on those cars and you would notice power boost with the pushing well over 300hp.

    Forget Smokey and the Bandit and Burt Reynolds. My love for these cars came from Sammy Hagar-driving a red on black one out on stage back in the 1980s singing There's only one way to rock and Trans Am Highway Wonderland!

    It's gone straight to a 10 100 .I live in England and I grew up on the SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT films, loved them and the TRANSAM. it made me want to do things like getting chased by POLICE witch i did in a big way, sadly missed out on owning my own TRANS, but I had a good go in a friends loved it. very good memories indeed. 😊😆

      James Anderson yes "Smokey Bear" is a slang for cops. It comes from the Smokey the Bear hat they sometimes wear.

    I worked at a performance shop in Miami and a friend had a pinstripping shop where he did everything by hand a few doors down and they sent the cars to him to put the "Bandit" on the doors and maybe a couple of other touches. There were I think three regular cars for filming closeups and a stunt one with (Among other things) the front brakes disconnected for bootleg turns (without using the e brake). This was a bit before filming began and we walked over to see these cars come in. Here comes the stunt one roaring in and hits the brakes and skids and smashes into dumpsters and a wall never to run again. Then there were only three.

    Bragging rights for having driven such car but truth be known was these cars were not your every day driver and were in fact anything but fun to drive. Driving on rough roads was very painful, even bumps and cracks in the road made for a head banging back breaking experience. Oh the railroad tracks, you came to a full stop and went over them one wheel at a time. The original bandit cars I believe had 700R4 automatic transmissions which didn't last. Fun to drive on the road, NO. Fun to do burnouts and donuts in parking lots and city streets, YES. Most people got rid of them because they were not driver friendly cars, had mechanical issues, and back then people were stealing the T-tops.

    • @dw8840
      @dw8840 8 років тому +4

      James Barrow the 700-4R didn't come out until 1982. The 1977-81 Trans Ams came with TH350 automatics or TH400 automatics, both were 3 speed. Some TH350's in 1981 had a lock up torque converter.

    I had a 78,one of the best cars i ever owned. This video would have been much better,had he cut out the backstory,cut back on the burnout footage and done more footage of the car itself,perhaps had some footage of one going through its modernization at the factory and actually talked with the owners of the company and really showed what goes into each car. I mean everyone knows how these cars got popular and everyones seen the movie so why waste time with all that BS?
