Johnny Rutherfords 80 trans am that he got for winning the 500 was sold at auction in my town back in the early spring. It had 2600 original miles and sold for $80,000
Mine was a '77 SE with 50,000 miles. Over the next 5 years, I owned 4 more 2nd gen T/As, but that 77 was the fastest. My favorite though was my 79. No T-tops, 403 Olds engine, nothing special really, but totally reliable and handled like a dream. I really miss those cars, man. They seemed faster than they were. And for their time, they actually were pretty fast compared to other cars of the same era.

Paid it off over 36 months and traded it in on a used '80 Corvette. Worst mistake of my life. I hated that Vette. No interior space, uncomfortable to drive. Sold that one quick. I've wanted that T/A back ever since. Still have dreams about getting it back again.
My buddy had a TA with the 6.6? I don't remember the year, but it was around this body style. The big motor didn't matter because it barely ran anyway. 😅 He thought it would be funny to drive through someone's yard IN THE RAIN. We almost got stuck, and then it almost stalled when we finally got back on pavement. And that would have been bad, because we had to push it, to get it started. 😮

What is with the super long waits for new episodes on Discovery+? I have loved Motor Trend Channel for almost a decade and eagerly await new season of Hot Rod Garage and Faster as well as new episodes of Roadkill and Roadkill Garage. Love you guys!
It's not that old of an episode. It was released on discovery early June. So even when I watched it on discovery Mike was already off crutches for a while. There's only 2 episodes that have released since this one. And one of those was released 7/29.
Well they wanted to get to Radwood in florida. I see on their website that there was one in Florida on March 2nd 2024 so my best guess is that this was filmed in late February 2024. It also lines up with February being a good time to snowboard and Fin breaking his leg.

I would have bet the drivers side front leaf spring mount was going to come through the floor in this episode. Too bad about the black '78 as that one had an L78/W-72 T/A 6.6 motor .

The 77s were slow, slow, slow. So dam slow you timed them in the quarter mile with a calendar. The only good years were pre 1972 and even then 71 HO 455ci engines only put out a pitiful 335hp. There is a legitimate reason they were all called tuna boats with screaming chickens driving them. IE because they were slow as a fishing boat and the alway losing driver cried like dying poultry.
@@gordocarbo Not an easy mod. Plus, the aftermarket has sorted out the performance of the 301 turbo now. The big issue back then was gas. Modern gas is a boon to these cars.
My parents purchased a new black 1980 ta 301 turbo ,the car road nice ,had no power and when you had to stop it would spin out of control,360 ° no problem!
The level of Rust on this car is what all the F bodies looked like by the mid-late 80’s where I live. The black car would be considered in great shape here, not “stored underwater”😁
I believe this was the first Pony car to receive a turbo, beating out the Fox Body SVO or whatever it was called and the Pace Car Trans Am with the Grand National engine.

Mr Freiburger, I believe you misspoke about the engine. The Pontiac 400 is a far better choice for performance than the Oldsmobile 403. 200HP(in 1977) and 220HP(in 1978/79) Pontiac 400 engines had T/A 6.6 on the shaker. The base 180HP Pontiac 400 and Olds 403 had 6.6 Litre on the shaker. Many automatic transmission equipped T/As from 1977-79 had the Olds 403 engine. If you're lucky you may find one with the Pontiac engine. I believe there were 3 engines available in 1978. The W72 400 with 220 HP/320 lb/ft of torque. The L78 400 with 180 HP. The L80 403 Olds with 185 HP. The 400's had a Vin code of Z while the 403 had the K vin code.

I thought the 403 Olds in these things was the "weaker" engine? I was 16 when these things came out and have always wanted one, even though I'm a "Ford" guy... ha, ha... I remember seeing a 1979 TA on the dealers lot in 1980 and it was still brand new, had the 403 in it, but it also had the 4 speed! No T-tops. I so wanted that car... But only making $3.50 an hour working at Sizzler at the time was not going to happen! When the 1980 "Turbo" came out, I was out as well.... No Bueno.
The guy who owned the mini golf place near my grandparents summer home had a turbo in like 1983. I would get dropped off with $20 and spend an hour asking questions about the car.

The 1980 Trans Am Indy Pace car was my first car. I was 15. Absolutely minimum power, but with that WS-6 package it would turn on a dime.

That is why the seats are not bolted down. Some of the pace cars came with Recaro seats

1973 super duty 455 was literally the last of the big horsepower muscle cars with legit power.
You should read about the the super duty cars built with "leftover" pre emissions parts until early 1974

If I'm not mistaken the automatic came with the 403 and the manual had the 400.
In 1978, you still could get the 220 hp 400 in an automatic, in 1979 the 400 was 4 speed only.
