  • Dr. Boyd here to recommend my favorite prenatal vitamins and why I think that these prenatal vitamins are the best for women in pregnancy. ►If you are trying to get pregnant, then we want to help with our $5 Getting Pregnant Guide ►►► pearently.com/three-step-guid...
    ***This video states that choline should be taken in 400 - 450 mcg dose. This is an error. The correct daily dose of choline is 400 - 450 mg (not mcg).

    The Best Dr. Recommended Prenatal Vitamins video that many of you have asked for…
    I am a board-certified OB/GYN, and I have been in practice for over 25 years. Now I am doubling down to help women become empowered in their pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
    “What prenatal vitamins should I take?” This is a question I have received many times over the past 25 years and I am excited to cover this topic because it is of great importance to be taking vitamins as early as possible in your pregnancy. Honestly, you SHOULD be taking vitamins before you conceive. This will make sure you have the right nutrients in your body as your baby is developing.
    With 50% of the pregnancies in America being unplanned there is a large number of women who show up at my office with this question having already reach 4 - 6 weeks into their pregnancy. This is not optimal and I encourage YOU to plan your pregnancy.
    If you are one of the women in America with an unplanned pregnancy, (NOT unwanted, just unplanned) then I am glad you are here to watch this video or read this article.
    There are five KEY ingredients in a prenatal vitamin. There are many other ingredients in prenatal vitamins, but these 5 are the main ones you want to make sure are in your prenatal. Later in this post, I will recommend to you my favorite prenatal vitamins.
    ONE: Folic Acid / Folate
    The amount of Folic Acid, also known as Folate, that is recommended is 400 - 800 mcg (micrograms). Folic Acid is important in the development of the babies brain and spinal system. It is very important to take this prior to conception if possible.
    TWO: Iodine
    Iodine needs to be taken in the amount of 150 mcg (micrograms) on a daily basis. Iodine is also important in the babies brain development as well as the mother later in pregnancy. As a woman develops in her pregnancy she will have increased stress on her thyroid gland (the gland in your neck). If not enough iodine is consumed then the thyroid gland cannot function and this puts women at an increased risk for preterm labor, miscarriage, and still-birth (babies dying inside of the mom).
    THREE: Choline
    Choline needs to be consumed in the amount of 400 - 450 mg on a daily basis. Choline can be found in many of the foods you eat like eggs, liver, legumes, etc…. But often times women don’t get enough choline from their foods and they need a prenatal vitamin to supplement the missing choline.
    FOUR: Vitamin D
    A lot of times women that live north of the Mason-Dixon line in the united states don’t get enough sun in their daily activity. Sun is very important when it comes to Vitamin D absorption in the body. You need to be taking around 1000 - 4000 IUs (international units) per day.
    FIVE: Iron
    Iron is very important in your blood transferring oxygen to your body. It is recommended to take 20 - 30 mg (milligrams) per day.
    Those five items are very important to consume on a daily basis. I have identified one prenatal vitamin that is very good. It is called MegaFood Baby and Me. This prenatal vitamin has all of the elements we discussed except it does not have quite enough Choline it has 300 mcg of Choline per daily serving.
    So, how do you get that extra Choline you need? You can eat eggs, dairy, beans, and spinach. So, with that in mind if you take your prenatal vitamin and eat one egg per day you will have the recommended amount of Choline in your daily intake.

    This was so helpful, especially since you have these specific dosages in the description! I wanted a prenatal vitamin especially for infertility and conception, as I have PCOS. I was excited to hear you mention pink stork, because I actually just ordered vitamins from them; It was not one of the 2 that you mentioned. It was their Fertility prenatal gummies.

    Any videos on PCOS and pregnancy? I’m 9 weeks and worried I might miscarriage. Trying to eat healthy but it’s hard when you have a food allergy to dairy, wheat, gluten, egg whites, pineapple, papaya and ginger. Kind of hard to avoid some of those foods when you’re getting nauseous but you’re too tired to cook a healthy meal. Trying to not eat as much fruit too but it does help a little. I’m worried if I eat too much fruit and not enough of the other healthy foods I’ll miscarriage.

      Hi Cayla. Baby and Me does not contain choline like Baby and Me 2 does. This is not required in a prenatal as you can get choline in enough quantity in many foods. However, many moms like to take "just in case". It is very good for your baby during development. Also, the baby and me requires you to take 4 tablets per day for a serving! Baby and Me 2 only requires you to take 2 tablets per day for a serving. Big benefit.

      Calcium is good to take during pregnancy as your baby is using your calcium stores to build his or her bones. If you don't want to supplement calcium, you can eat foods high in calcium.

      Hi Presley. You can choose between the two different prenatal vitamins. I recommend them both. If you take Baby and Me then take 2 tablets each day. It does not have DHA (omega 3 fatty acid), which is healthy for your pregnancy, but it is not a requirement for a prenatal. You can get omega-3 fatty acid from foods such as salmon, flax seeds, and walnuts. Or you can take the Actif prenatal. Best wishes.

    I have been reading that up to 50% of the population has a gene mutation that prevents proper absorption of folic acid, therefore folate is the better nutrient to look for. Most vitamins contain folic acid which is synthetic but I was able to find folate based option at Whole Foods. My dr didn’t know anything about this.

    • @pearently
      @pearently  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Maggie. Yes, Mega Food Baby and Me 2 does contain enough folate (folic acid). If you take the recommended dose (2 tablets) everyday, you will get 600 mcg of folate. We recommend that a pregnant woman get at least 400 mcg of folic acid each day. I always tell my patients that it is safe to take an additional supplement of folic acid (folate) 1 mg for extra precaution (especially if they have neural tube defect in the family).

      Hi Ella. Yes, this is an error in this video that I have not fixed yet. I apologize. The correct amount is 400 - 450 mg per day (not mcg). If you don't eat foods high in choline (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy) then you can supplement with the 450 mg dose. I hope this clarifies things.

      Hello Weave. This prenatal is good, but I do not recommend this prenatal because of the ingredients they use along with the vitamins and minerals. Also, it is important to find a prenatal with folate rather than folic acid. Folate is the natural occurring form of the vitamin that is easier for many women to digest and use.

    • @pearently
      @pearently  4 роки тому +3

      Hi Cris Ann. Getting vitamins and minerals in your diet (food) is the best way to get the nutrients that you need. However, most women do not eat enough fresh fruits, vegetable, nuts, meat, etc. to get all of the vitamins and minerals needed to grow their precious cargo (baby). I always recommend that women take a prenatal vitamin before, during, and after pregnancy (even if they have a very healthy and balanced diet). Your body will get rid of the "extra" amounts of vitamins and minerals that it does not need. The vitamins that you need to be cautious about overdosing with are vitamins A, D, E, and K. These vitamins, in very large doses, can build up in your body and become dangerous. However, this happens when taken in LARGE doses. So, yes, I do recommend that you take a prenatal vitamin to be safe. I hope this is helpful. Best wishes.

    Hi! Thanks for the video. I'm concerned with taking multi-vitamins due to the fact that certain vitamins are best absorbed away from others (ex: iron is not well absorbed when taken with calcium, etc). Do you recommend taking individual vitamins (at the recommended amounts) away from their problem vitamins to help increase absorption?

    • @pearently
      @pearently  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Kala. The contents of a prenatal vitamin work together well. Prenatal vitamins do not always contain enough calcium. So, it is good to take calcium separately. It is never a bad thing to take vitamins individually like you described. However, this is more work for you. Make sure that you are not too overwhelmed with remembering to take each vitamin. A big concern is that women take vitamins on an empty stomach or without fat. Certain vitamins need fat for absorption. So, I recommend that you take your vitamins with a meal containing healthy fats (avocado, eggs, butter, olive oil, cheese, etc.)

So i’m assuming she thought i was taking over the counter prenatals and she wanted me to add this folic acid. Help!!! What should i do!?
