Ep 04 Wasdale, Wast water Camp Hike and climb Kirk Fell and Great Gable. Wiltshire man has Adventure
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 вер 2020
- In this episode I motorcycle the length of Wasdale along the shores of Wast water to the National trust camp site at Wasdale head where I meet up with my good friend and weather guru Ant "The Jinx" Powell.
He summons up his powers and makes rain happen.
We spend a pleasant few hours in the Ritson's bar at the foot of Kirk Fell before heading back to the camp site for some well earned rest.
I fall asleep to the sound of rain on tent to wake refreshed the next day.
We then head out on our 9 mile trek to climb the summits of Kirk Fell and Great Gable. We encountered a waterfall and an impressive scramble/ climb up Kirk fells crags which is not for the faint hearted before reaching the summit of Kirk fell.
In the next video the journey continues on to Great Gable and beyond.
Beautiful views! Thanks for sharing
Core of my heart, My Country !
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For floods and fire and famine,
She pays us back three fold -
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.
Beautiful words Ade 👍🏻
@@mountains_and_moors Thank you Sir :-)
It was Dorothea McKellar who wrote them over 100 years ago. Good health to you.
@@adelarsen9776 And to you too sir:)
‘The Jinx’ ... Hello, my name is Amante across the pond. I just subscribed to your YT channel. You’re a good man, great job out there with Sandy!! 👍 Stay well and safe!!
Although US based, things like this make me want to join you in the UK.
As always, you can always count on Jinx to bring along his dark clouds to provide you with some interesting weather challenge LOL!!!!!! He came through for you again Sandy. He is as certain as death and taxes. It looks like you two had a very memorable, but, challenging hike there in the middle of that rugged and beautiful area. The views were stunning as ever. Thank you again Sandy for taking those cameras out there with you. You did a great job getting across the top of the waterfalls without them falling into the water. Take care my friend. See you on the next one.
I make these adventures fun with the challenging weather that follows me around. Not sure what I have done over the years to piss off the weather gods! ATB Ant 👍🏻😉
Wow 👍 loving it lots beautiful scenery a nice inn and ant bringing the weather with him again what’s not to like this is becoming a great mini series 😊😊👍👍❤️❤️
Thanks Marcus, hope your doing well
Even in the wet and murky conditions, it still looks stunning. Enjoying all the content, can't wait for episode 5. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Dave
Wow that had everything for a proper adventure and all within our own shores. Excellent again.
Spectacular footage! That is quite a climb.
It was amazing Bill. 802 meters to the top of Kirkfell and 899 meters on Great Gable. ATB Ant 👍🏻😉
Well done both, I couldn't do it, so live vicariously through you, so thankyou. Those views....glorious!!!!
Atleast you were able to see the summits through my lens Bry. The old hip help up OK but I knew it was there:)
That climb......killer, I'd never manage that with my dodgy knee. Great video again stunning views. Bring on the next one.
Stunning views mate, you look like your enjoying yourself. Thanks for taking us along.
A top rate way to prepare mentally Sandy. I can tell you are in awe of the Lakes. I mean you've been around and so your awe is saying something. I've yet to have the pleasure. Good video. Mark
HI from Australia. Thanks for posting such amazing scenery. Looking forward to seeing more
Fantastic views and a great effort so far chaps. Thank goodness the weather is holding up for you so far. Onwards and upwards!
Thank you for sharing your adventure!
lovely show, and the cozy pub footage on top of it
I think those roads and scenery are made for Chug 👍.... Perfect bike for it, really enjoying your vlogs... ATB 🍻🍻🍻🍻👍
Great weekend Sandy. Loved the hike, food, beer and most of all the company 👍🏻😉
Thanks Ant, same here. It was a great couple of days away. We need to get Si up with us next time and spend longer there
Finding these videos fascinating , getting to see all those roads that as a walker I never get to see , last time I was at wasdale head I got there over black sale pass , spent the night on the camp site and left by going up to styhead tarn where the weather closed in and climbing great gable was put off for another time , Ant certainly does seem to bring the rain lol , sure we went up on the other side of that river and the scramble up the hillside was very hairy on the last bit, seem to remember seeing hikers on the path your on and thinking stuff that mountain goat territory lol
Hiking is still a great adventure and the only and best way to see the remote spots
Excellent again Sandy looks fantastic!
This is excellent Sandy!! Spectacular views!! 🙌Well done! I watched it during my lunch break. Absolutely gorgeous! 👍
Thanks Amante:)
Wiltshire Man ...You’re welcome !!
Mental preparation is key. Excellent video Sandy. ATB
Years ago I was in the Lakes walking and climbing. I can remember going into the Wasdale Head Hotel but not coming out of it. Woke up with one hell of a hangover 😵
It really is a joy to watching your videos, this one has stirred some very old memories.
Welldone John, just don't get a bad head next time. The Inn is very lovely
What an area that is. All the stone walls, row after row, seen from the campsite. Stunning, for a hedgerowed(?) southerner such as myself. Haven't been there for a couple of years. Always going to be back there at some point.
Nice action photography; good sense of scale. Thanks : D
Hello Sandy,
fantastic landscape. When I don't have to work anymore, I really want to go there.
Thanks for the great video.
Greetings from germany
I hope one day you can visit Jurgen, I think you will like it. I am hoping to do some EU motorcycle touring next year
@@WiltshireMan
Great ... i can recommend the vosges in france to you ... they are wonderful.
I'll stay tuned and look forward to your next episode. take care of yourself and have a good trip.
'Cheap tent' 😂😂 brilliant video again.
God did an inmensely glorious work with the Earth, did not he? What a craftsman!!
Wow, near scene mountains like those. Good to see Ant with you. Maybe one of these days, you guys can Chug together.
Don’t do motorbikes. Happy to chug pints with `sandy though! ATB Ant 😉👍🏻
@@mountains_and_moors Chugalug one then Ant on me with Sandy !!!!
Sandy, I live on the East Coast near Berwick upon Tweed and this series has inpired me to get over to the fells in the spring, keep the video's coming you are living the dream, motor bike, camping and hill walking. Thanks.D
Excellent! Really enjoyed watching your adventures again mate 👌🏽👍🏽 Keep up the great job and ride safe. Best wishes my friend 😎👍🏽🍻
Why watch tv country file when I can enjoy your wonderful videos and so humble fantastic
Thankyou George:)
Great scenery Ole boy! The star of the show is obviously Ant, a natural star lol! 🤪😂
Cam, your so silly 😜
@@mountains_and_moors No He's not Ant. You are a star...You can't see it but others can. I reckon it's the glasses:)
I don’t think Ant wanted to get that cheap tent wet either 😂. Awesome place for a hike.
Keeping the Soulo well pampered under it’s dry tarp blanket, lol 🤪
TBH Andy the Soulo had a good soaking the previous night when I was wild camping after summiting Scafell Pike and beyond! Knowing the weather was due to be poor on the Friday, Sandy and II arranged to meet a little earlier to avoid the worst of it. We only just got our tents up in time! The tarp creates a great space for cooking... What did he expect heading out with the Jinx, after all he branded me with the trail name! ATB Ant 👍🏻😉
Don't listen to him Andy, He's is the Jinx OK. If you want rain go camping with him. It's sure to rain:) He is the Jinx Rain Man
Really enjoying this adventure with you Sandy.Makes my 4 mile walk with my two workingcocker spaniels today seem very tame.Cheers - Heyden
I'm sure the dogs appreciate the walk no matter where it is. I do miss my two little dogs, they both passed away earlier this year. The almost reached the ripe old age of 16
Wasdale Head and that pub are epicentres of British climbing. Great memories of camping and drinking there myself
Beautiful place.. need to fly up there... Thanks for the video!
A flight up there would be epic Paul, you'd have to know your weather though
You're BHPA... I'd just follow you! 😆👍
Tremendous series
Pub food looked amazing. 😋👍
Very good filming and editing the episode.. Quite the hike!
Brings back memories, a beautiful set of clips Sandy, great to see you and the jinx out again. Stay well. Harry
Great Series Sandy👍
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this journey for many reasons. You give me hope that I can still hike, camp and ride and don't have to use a big adventure bike. Chug has great appeal to me and perhaps a bike like that would force me to slow down and just enjoy my remaining years.
The Himalayan would certainly force you to slow down Jet, it's not a fast bike but still quite capable
Marvelous scenery, bet that scramble got the blood racing.
Yes it did and it was great fun, ATB, Ant 👍🏻
Great video Sandy. It brightens my day when I see a notification popup about more of your lakeland adventures. 👍
Awesome! Love it. Thank you for sharing. So pleased i stumbled onto your vlog's. I have told others to watch :-)
Thats kind. Thankyou
Fantastic views great vid mate, atb John.
😎👌📸 I’m so envious Sandy. Credit to you sir .
LOL Thanks:)
That mountain goat country sure has great views bro. Stay safe
thanks for sharing your adventure sandy and chugg ;o)
I love the Lake District, in 1951 we spent 24 days camping there and it rained for 9 days. Back then it was not so touristy as now. Hardy saw any vehicles on the passes, we had a 1933 Sunbeam 500 c.f. and sidecar. We just stopped and ask the farmers if we could camp. We were members of the camping club of GB and Ireland.
That should have read 14 days and it rained for 9 days.
Oh! Wow! you're outdoing yourself now Sandy!. this is undoubtedly one of the best adventures you've taken me on.!. Beautiful countryside. and steep too! watch your footing ! Ladd! Loved Ade Larson's Poem below too! ok Sandy catch you in and on the next leg! be safe es dadadididi didididada! de Ellis
Very accurate record of Lake district weather...;-)
I Like how the "mental preparation" always takes place in pubs here, funny that.I used to haunt those places as a kid when i had chance and the money for a train journey from Winchester, Brockenhurst, Hampshire or later Devizes. I could climb those hills then, I even cycled a few times to Penrith from down South, for the past 30 years I've lived up North and haven't been too close to them, mad that.
Brilliantly shot and edited. I can see that must of took ages. Well done
Amazing climb. I've personally never been a fan of scrambling up loose wet rock :). But sure looks worth it for the views.
Sandy’s camping partner “has a cheap tent” because he had to put a tarp over it. My experience is that in hot weather, you set it up like he did to create an air gap between the tent and the tarp. This helps keep the tent cooler under a blazing sun. In the winter, we place the tarp near or on the tent to assist in snow removal.
I was having a joke with Ant. His tent wasn't cheap, infact top of the range and very expensive. Thanks for your thoughts on using a tarp with a tent, all very valid
@Dale Bannon - TBH Dale, I new the weather was going to be so bad on the Friday I popped up the tarp so we could sit under and cook while staying out of the weather. I had pondered using it between mine and Sandy’s tent but due to Covid all tents had to be kept 6m apart. The tent needed a good airing as it spent the previous night getting soaked in the mountains. I did a solo hike the day before meeting Sandy over Scafell Pike and beyond 👍🏻😉
If interested I should have a video up by the weekend 😀
Your climbing excursion reminds me of the many times I've scrambled up 14,000 footers in Colorado, USA. Both have stunning views. I hope to see some of GB before I'm too old to enjoy your type of excursions.
The mountains in this land aren't quite so high
Cracking day, I love it when you say we are going to do this walk then ride this pass etc...one day at a time mate I think you think we have a 48 hour day lol
I also wish I had a thousand year life span too. So much I want to do but not enough time. Got 3 more passes to ride before this series is done and next week Chug is off again on another adventure:)
@@WiltshireMan know the feeling
Great footage and commentary as usual Sandy. Weather there reminded me of last Saturday and Tuesday along the West Highland Way. Just got back, and catching up with your content. We had either biblical rain or cloudless sky’s. Had a lot of fun though. All the best, mate.
Hey Bill Congratulations on completing the WHW. A feather in your cap.
I think my long distance walking days are limited now, The last year has seen increasing pain in my right hip. I fear the hip joint is wearing out!
You spend a bunch of time doing your adventures, but you also spend a lot of time sitting in front of the computer editing. Both are appreciated. Thanks, Ronn
Thanks Ronn. Yes each episode even though it is only 10 or 12 minutes long takes around 4 hours to edit
100% what Ade said and more! Keep on "Chugging" Sandy. Cheers........Les
Fantastic scenery again. Hope the walk goes well. You've got me to think about having my own adventures. So next week I'm going on my motorcycle to camp out in my new tent at a fantastic camp site near Frome called Valli's Veg it's as close to wild camping as possible but it's an official camp site!
Keep well bye Stuart 🙂
Thats the spirit Stuart, Go for it. If I'm free I might ride over
@@WiltshireMan excellent
I have to say it again , your videos are brilliant and so engaging. The music choice is excellent (especially the folk Gaelic stuff - I assume is UA-cam audio), I set alerts from when you upload and watch them late at night. The filming quality is excellent 10/10 - and I then realise that you live within 50 yards of me!! Brilliant stuff Sandy.
LOL Thanks Mark,
The music either comes from UA-cam creator studio or Bensounds. It's free but you have to sometimes sift through loads of tunes to find the one that fits the scene.
Where do you live? I live on the corner of Dockle
Wiltshire Man Davenwood. I walk past your place most days. I waved at you all stood outside looking at a motorbike on Monday afternoon (4:30ish) I went past on the bus. I think your wife saw.
Welcome to my part of the world. Weather was amazing today. Spent the morning on wast water on my canoe
Sure is a nice part of the UK. Probably one of the best
It’s good to stay hydrated lol
Great views excellent video cheers 👍🏍🏕
Love Wast Water. Shame you didn't get the bit of road leading up to the 'entrance', breathtaking valley :)
All good walking and camping times. Wish I was fit to do it all with you. I could give you a lot of advice you don't need
'Weather Guru' Hahahaha, I think I just laughed myself a hernia
Hahaha, he lived up to his name again Si, Lets lynch him and gibet him upon the moor. What do you say?
@@WiltshireMan There is a hill called Gibbet Hill, seems like renewing an old tradition could be a plan!
@@rialobran Haa. Good plan. Next camp Gibbet hill
very nice .Wonder how Scotland look like when it's sunny. Anybody seen that? ;). Keep on WM
The strange thing is, in June last year, I was hiking around this exact lake when, with the tiniest bit of 4g signal, I thought I'd check your website for 'knives available' and you had just listed a classic so I frantically emailed you and as luck would have it, I managed to get in conact with you and procure my Jacklore Classic knife!
Thats amazing. It was meant to be:)
Very nice mate, still some passes to squeeze in this year all going well! What’s the full list?
I'm not sure what the full list is but I think there could be 7 passes in total that are accessible to motorcycles.
Don’t worry about the cold wet weather, we can take it.
Core of my heart, My Harley!
Climb Kirk Fell oh ye bold!
Woe for the weight I'm draggin',
400 kilos I'm told -
Hearing the grinding gearbox,
Now I am not so smug,
The oily trail I'm leavin'
Why didn't I bring ol' Chug?
Again, NOT Dorothea McKellar.
Haa Loved it that was a good little poem:)
@@WiltshireMan Thanks, I wrote another one in your previous video. I wish I were there!
@@sdefiel3719 I'll have a look for it:) It's hard to keep up with comments sometimes!
Thankyou
Every time i put one of your vids on i get a pop up trying to sell me a Suzuki Strom. I hope you get a cut of the profits if they succeed in selling one?
Great bit of filming, iv'e enjoyed the whole of the lake district saga so far.
Wastwater is the deepest lake in England, (260ft) and there's some gnomes, at the bottom, by all accounts,,
LOL Did u chuck em in
@@WiltshireMan
Ha ha, nope,, it was on TV years ago,, can't think why it's stuck in my mind,, lol..
Was that a DIY half and half at the pub? =D thanks for the vid, ATB, Gary CT Backcountry.
Loving it. Did you try any lying or gurning in the pub ? I can’t remember if Wasdale is the Lying competition and Kirkstone is the gurning - or vice versa. Loving the series. Keep them coming
I kept wondering if the Romans continued to wear sandals in such terrain and weather.
Just a hard drinking, hard climbing, moto cycling, para gliding, cinematographer, that's all.
LOL Yes I do enjoy the odd pint:)
@@WiltshireMan Well deserved.
@@WiltshireMan - Or two! :-)
Hi sandy great vid What helmet are you wearing ( I like it ) ( HaHa!! ) stay safe and carry on adventuring Atb. Roach
Hi Mike. I think it's called the "Fox v1". I brought it from the local Swindon Motorcycle Mega store around £100. Probably not the best but I like the sun visor. Got more adventures planned. Got to live to the max when you can:)
I really liked Ant's tent and flysheet do you have any idea of the make? thanks.
Hi, My tent is a Hilleberg Soulo with a Hilleberg Tarp 10 UL as the shelter. Way overkill for a campsite but I did spend the previous night on a solo outing in the mountains. The Tarp is usually used over a bivi bag. Hope this helps, ATB Ant 👍🏻😉
@@mountains_and_moors Thanks For the info Ant.
Have you ever thought of doing a mobile QSL during one of your outings?
QSO you mean, yes and I have done on several occasions when doing SOTA
For the benefit of us yanks, what is the difference between a "water", a "lake", and a "mere"? Thanks and happy riding.
add to that list a tarn and a flash
@john mortison - I don’t have the official answer but I would suggest in the Lake District (which is this entire mountainous region in the north west of England, not too far from the Scottish border) a lake is more likely at ground level and fuelled from many a run off from the mountains. Tarns as per Paul’s comment are the smaller lakes that form in the mountains. In Sandy’s next video you will see us have lunch at Kirkfell Tarn and pass a stunning tarn in the saddle area between Kirkfell and Great Gable. ATB Ant (Sandy’s mate from the vid)
Lakes, tarns meres, waters, loughs, lochs, loghs etc. are all essentially the same thing in terms of being bodies of water although I believe meres are generally shallow(er) and lochs are sometimes connected to the sea (but then some lakes may be too) so I reckon it's down to local language as much as anything. As Ant said tarns are lakes in the hills/mountains, formed by glaciers, from the old Norse word "tjörn." I've no idea about "flash", sorry :)
@North by Northeast - I think a Flash is something that gets you arrested, no body of water required 🤪
There is only one lake in the Lake District. i.e. Bassenthwaite Lake.
All the rest are "meres" and "waters." eg. Wastwater, Buttermere etc.
suberb views, i did once a fantastic ride along the waters, 2012, thx Sandy, nice wild walk. Do you know what kinda app the Ant is showing while hiking ?
He may not but I do 😉 I use OSMaps. It’s an annual subscription of £25.99 and this gives you all England, Wales & Scotland OS maps with GRPs, allow you to create routes. Show progress of routes etc. I love the ‘AR viewer’, You are looking trough the camera at views and it labels all the mountains, tor’s etc that you are looking at. Great app 😁 Lucky I have this really as I left my map n’ compass on the dinning table when I left... Before meeting Sandy I spent the previous night wild camping after summiting Scafell Pike and beyond...
‘The Jinx’ hi, thx mate, i work too with apple, don’t want no covid-windows 😀, thx, didn’t now it was in the app store. Gonna look for that.
‘The Jinx’ openmaps outdoor gps maps is for free, uses openstreetmaps
As i remember it ,it is how the wether is in Scotland some days, raincoat and wellies on! Barbro Sveden
Yea looks bit scarey that climb , bet lot worse going down , kayaked wastwater end to end very moody place the deep water has a strange feel 4 shure it has almost different viscosity on the deep side ....
Your of your heads dont see the fun in that climbing .👍
