Kirk Fell & Great Gable. Lake District. 16th September 2021

- A walk starting from Wasdale Head in the Lake District up to Kirk Fell (802m) and Great Gable (899m).
The walk starts from the Car Park at Wasdale Head and first heads along the track which runs past the small church at Wasdale Head. After passing Burnthwaite Farm and crossing a footbridge over Gable Beck the route heads uphill, following a clear path up Gavel Neese to Beck Head. From Beck Head we turn left and start the climb up Rib End. From Rib End the route continues to the summit of Kirk Fell (802m)
We then re-trace our steps back down to Beck Head and start the climb up to Great Gable. From the summit of Great Gable we walk the short distance to the fantastic view at the Westmorland Cairn. From the Westmorland Cairn we head back towards Great Gable summit and pick up the path which heads down to Sty Head. From the stretcher box at Sty Head we turn right and follow the path down to Wasdale Head. A superb walk, distance around 7.5 miles

Awesome to see the view from Kirk Fell. Did it from the mental South slope up from Wasdale last year in sideways rain! Nice to see that there was a view should the weather have ben kinder.

Carol setting a cracking pace from the church mind but man it looked a canny pull. Great views all the way up mind and your 'usual' brilliant weather. Brilliant views from the summit but a big drop down before the up for Great Gable, which I think has the best view in the Lakes on a clear day. Great walk with spectacular views but tough going at times, no wonder you both look for slim and fit! Cheers Alan
Thanks Alan, it was a cracking walk and one of the best days on the fells we have had so far. I agree with you about Great Gable, the views are superb. We went up Great Gable in 2016 from Green Gable & Windy Gap and have been wanting to go up again for a while now. We found the route on this video to be much better than the Windy Gap route. We had our coffee & Sandwiches sitting near the Westmorland Cairn, the views from there were stunning! Thanks Mary, this has to be one of the best days we have had on the fells so far. It was superb and one we want to do again. We have around 50 Wainwrights still to do. We haven't done as many as we would have liked over the last couple of years due to the pandemic, but we are not in any hurry to complete them and want to take it all in and enjoy the views. I love Great Gable but have to say that last time up with Graham was the hardest route up to the summit we have ever done. It was a long walk just to get to the bottom of Napes Needle and that was before the massive never ending scree slope of Little Hell Gate (well named). Derek and I are just pleased we managed to do it as we didn't want to let Graham down, and it was so hot! Do hope we bump into you both again somewhere soon. We both had a fantastic day and both agreed that Great Gable is our favourite fell we have been on so far. The views on the whole walk were stunning from start to finish, I had more than one and a half hours worth of video footage ( and around 200 photos!), so it took some editing to get the video to a decent length! Best video yet Eddie. Very well shot and edited. I was on a hike between Grasmere and Patterdale with wild camp Patterdale side of St Sunday. Cofa pike was a little hairy with my 9 kilo pack 😳

I've always been a bit put off Great Gable because all the videos I've seen so far make it look too much like a rocky moonscape to walk comfortably, but it didn't look so bad on the route you took, so maybe I'll put it back on the to-do list. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, it was a superb day, we both agreed it was one of the best days on the fells we have had so far. The views were stunning all the way and especially from Great Gable. This was our second time on Great Gable, we were up there in April 2016 and went up by Green Gable and Windy Gap. I wasn't doing the videos back then ,so wanted to go back up to get some footage. We found the route up in this video to be much better and we definitely want to do this walk again. It is definitely worth the effort. Thanks Stuart, we could see quite a few people on Great Gable when we were heading up Kirk Fell but by the time we got there they were all gone. We had the summit of Great Gable to ourselves! Hi Eddie. Hope you don't mind a quick question. I'm thinking of doing Kirk Fell & Great Gable but was going to go up Black Sail pass and over Kirk Fell Crags. Am I right in thinking this route is a bit easier? Cheers David
