    Bagheera is looking so healthy & beautiful. I'm 71 & haven't had my own horse for about 20 years. I love watching your videos & pretending I am the one in the saddle.
    Now that my kids are all grown I would really like to get a horse just like Bagheera. When I did have my own horses (from age 7 to age 50ish) I used to ride at least 3-5 times a week, mostly on the trail. We have some pretty good trails in Southern California. It's not totally paved over here if you know where to to. Up towards Yosemite there are lots of trails & the scenery is breathtaking. I really love a good mare. I seem to connect with them better. The last mare I had was old school body-type Morgan & I was lucky enough to have her for 24 years, until she was probably about 34. She was a rescue. I had a Polish Arab for 10 years during the same time I had my Morgan, & the Morgan really helped me teach the Arab to do just about everything in such a grounded way. The Arab mare, on the other hand, taught the Morgan to be more playful, especially when we lived in the Sierras & she saw her first snow. It was good for her to learn how to play, since she really had some rough treatment before I got her. I miss having horses. I'll get there again.

    Love that the two of you had time together. And, as a response to the flipper comments on your last post about Mushu, Bagheera is proof that you do what’s in the best interest of the horse/pony. She will be with you forever due to her age when you found her. A flipper wouldn’t care. You truly give your horses the very best! It makes my heart so happy.

    My OTTB and I did solo trail rides because no one else at my barn was brave enough to ride with me. I love winter trail rides-no insects to contend with. The winter sun and sky are different than in summer, and we loved the cold sweet breezes! My boy knew where the deer were long before I saw them, but he never was freaked out with them.
    I love Bagheera’s steady trot tempo-her buggy horses roots are showing. She’s such a gem.

    That was great Shae. Nothing like flying on Bagheera! Love seeing her mane flying & her ear’s catching every sound. Solo’s in beautiful weather(cold,hot,all 4 seasons) are my absolute favorite. Oh I should say were. Unfortunately I can’t ride any longer(cages,fusions in back & neck)Riding was my joy. My joy is my family & 9 grandkids now😊I love riding along with you. It’ll never leave my blood. I was in a different era-no helmets etc. I’m happy to see you & your students take precautions. I just got on & learned as I went. I only rode western & bareback was my favorite way to ride. I don’t regret. I loved every minute of it. Riding Bagheera was like riding my mare. Same coloring, except she had a huge head😁So glad you had a blast. Oh ain’t potholes grand🤦🏻‍♀️They never get fixed here especially on the dirt roads. Easier to make your way through on a horse then in a vehicle

We too battle lots of mud, as we get very wet fall/winters. I had boarded at a couple places in the past where it was quite muddy 😔 But happily at a place right now where it’s okay as our paddocks are crusher dust. Hi again SHAE
    Almost missed this ride along and so happy I didn't! Enjoyed this soo much. Nothing like a sunny winter day out in the fresh air just you and your horse. You have done a really nice job with B as it's tough at times taking on one of those driving horses and convert them to riding. Such an intense life they've lived. That wonderful Morgan part of her keeps her strong and loving life. She's a super example at 27and I'm quite sure now that she's with you has many more wonderful and quality years to come.
    Happy for you to get out too to let blow away the recent stress and sadness of your shocking news. Hoping you're doing better now. Been thinking about you and sending prayers your way for healing your special tender horse heart.
    Thx as always for sharing this great time. Catcha next time...

    She is such a good girl. In the UK we have plastic mud brushes that work as well as the metal curry comb for getting mud off but are kinder. They are brightly coloured, look like floor scrubbing brushes, with lots of plastic bristles. Cheap to buy. I ride on narrow country lanes with lots of bends so have to be real careful in the traffic. Bryon the gypsy cob prefers company even if its my friend on a bike but he will go on his own.

    Beyond physical ability a great trail horse must be curious and smart. Bagheera has both! The way she scans with her ears and is so interested in what is down the road, around the bend or on the trail shows how much she loves the variety of trails. You are BOTH lucky ladies to have common interests! She has a beautiful, fluid jog! You gave me the biggest guffaw at 18:27!! I thought I was the only one!! My great trail gelding had a crazy thing he did; I would sing as we went along and he would growl along. It was deliberate because when I stopped he stopped. He sounded like he just pooped but his growl just went on along with my song. My buddies and I think their horses thought it was hysterical. He spooked horses new to our riding group. What a character. No one ever heard him "sing" without me, and I think his pasture mates were grateful!

    ❣💯 Very cool vlog! Last Question, Shae: would Bagheera "know" how to find herself home since you didn't go through the woods this time, but on the dirt road through the center of town?
    Also, that "trot, Bagheera, trot song," in your higher feminine voice, do your students know it and would Bagheera respond to their singing it while trail-riding?
    I like, for safety, trail riding in a "group" as you and Kyle did in north-central Mexico when you were on the Criollo pony, Machete. Having been thrown once on a Friesian, yes, it was my fault, I'm just a little more cautious. Your protective vest is awesome!

      Yes she would know where to go. Horses have an excellent sense of direction. My students know it but I’m sure they would be to shy tj sing it haha! Yes, I ride with others most of the time but I also think solo rides are an important aspect of horsemanship and educating the horse themselves. I don’t recommend it for everyone but it’s something I do to make sure they have been exposed to riding alone. ❤️❤️❤️

    ❣💯Love your "uniform" for trail riding in the cold 35 degrees. Bagheera is my fav and was really working her ears picking up ever signal, enjoying her 4-mile hack with you. She was so happy. Shae.
    Question: Sometimes a rider flat-hand feeds her horse to reward her while she is mounted on her The horse turns her head. Is that safe to do? Never have seen you do it, just wondering if that "unbalances" an equine.

    • @freespiritequestrian
      @freespiritequestrian  Рік тому +3

      I could tell she lit up once we got going. Such a precious gem of a mare.
      I think rewarding with a treat under saddle with them doing a “carrot stretch” is totally fine. I do this as well. Of course doing it constantly wouldn’t be beneficial but for positive reinforcement, and gaining some Flexion sure!

    Looks so nice ! Have you ever experienced separation anxiety between horses when you take them out alone? Do you have any tips how to fix it ?

    • @freespiritequestrian
      @freespiritequestrian  Рік тому +6

      Yes. Usually ponying them out helps, hand walking on the trail, riding with other horses to build confidence, having them lead after building confidence, then riding out alone. Some horses just don’t do well riding out alone even after training, it just all depends.
