    Once potatoes start to break down and the good ones get in contact with the fluid from the rotten ones,the good ones rot fast.

      @@RockyMountainFarmer But they provided the washer I assume?
      And you mentioned that they collected them to late on contract date?
      Did they already had some rot and sprouts then, or did they come after the date?

    I never had clue one that such a machine existed. I remember this guy in the trading business who was super high IQ and ultra nerdy. One day at lunch he was telling me how had built a bunch of potato cellars somewhere. I found that to be weird because I knew he didn't own a farm. I asked him why built potato cellars? He used to buy entire crops from potato farmers for cash and store them until the prices got better. Some years he'd buy none, others he'd buy enough to fill his cellars. One of the most interesting guys I've ever known. He was also actually the first guy to ever trade "box spreads" on The CBOE. We knick named him the inventor. Having lunch with him was akin to taking a really complex class where the prof spoke 90MPH. LOL Thanks for the upload. I was sent here watching another vid of yours earlier. Happy rest of the harvest guys. Stay safe.

    Hi from AUS. here. Man, I'm so sorry this happened to you. Well like I said to you last time, don't feel bad as this too happened to us on our last year of harvest. Unfortunately, you will need to increase the water flow as much as possible & also try not to recyle all the water as the plant complained until we used only fresh water as the smell will still be on the spuds. I wish you all the best thru this difficult time. Keep up the great work, as you will prevale.

    Another ex UK potato grower here. I know that smell, won't ever forget it. We had stores occasionally start to self unload by a steady flow under the door. How ever do you manage to keep so calm ?

    • @RockyMountainFarmer
      @RockyMountainFarmer  2 місяці тому +8

      Yeah, when we first started taking the potatoes out, they weren’t too bad but now there is water running out of the cellar, so I understand that. I stay calm because I have faith that things will work out as long as we work hard to do what we can. You pray is if everything depends on God and you work as this everything depends on you. Usually works out pretty good.

  • @essexfarmer9610

    Ex UK potato grower here: That wash plant is certainly getting you out of a hole but it does seem to be doing a lot of damage. Is it possible to see how it occurs and maybe put some rubber belting there or something? It also seems strange that the spray line over the first conveyor is in the centre. Ours always had 3 short rows across the belt which did a better job of even water application. Not the job you were expecting in hay time! Anyway, good luck and I hope the plant keeps taking them!

    • @RockyMountainFarmer
      @RockyMountainFarmer  2 місяці тому +5

      So far we have cleaned out over half of the cellar and they have taken them. There’s one really bad rotten spot they won’t take it’s about 10,000 sacks but we have hauled in almost 40,000 sacks if the potatoes get a little bit damaged right now, it doesn’t matter because as soon as they get to the plant, they’re gonna be crushed and made into flakes.

    Yeah, it's doing a decent job, but I think that washplant could do with a lot of improvements for sure. It looks like it is not designed for this kind of problem. I suspect dirt sediment is easier to deal with than sprouts and rott, so recycling the water makes more sense. I didn't catch it, but are the costs involved with this process covered by the previous contract? Surely it's not your "problem", other than getting the taters out of storage.

    • @RockyMountainFarmer
      @RockyMountainFarmer  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, it could definitely be improved on. I know this wash plant is pretty old. It has just been repainted to look new and no the processor is not paying for any of the expense of the wash plant or any of it. We are just taking it as a loss

    It looks like a rock tumbler for a gold wash plant. Might want to find or get a bigger one that sprays more water and a bigger rotating drum to keep up and do a better job. This one seems to be missing several especially when you sped it up. Might even find one without the water tubs below the tumbler to where the rot falls on the ground and can be taken away with a skid steer bucket...idk just some ideas. Might be able to get one custom made without the water tubs below the tumbler.

    If even 10% of the rot gets through the "cleaner" it's still 10%. End use of the potatoes is the open question: dried flakes for instant mashed potatoes? Potatoe flour? Mac Donalds fries? Store brand potato chips? Name brand potato chips? I use to work for a major brewer: 1 month after starting I stopped drinking beer. Even the 6 cases a month they gave us. Fed that to my pigs. Haven't had a beer in over 30 years...

    Time consuming for sure ,what else can one do to save a very large cellar worth many 10,000s ,the washer would be a nice unit to to have ready on hand in case of a emergency like this ..they do look very nice after they are washed and even at the plant there's much more processing to follow as well ,,your're all lucky I would say,as it's slow although it's much better that a total lost of 10,000s

      Yeah, I’m glad we were able to salvage the majority of the potatoes. It would be about $1 million loss if we lost the whole cellar. I suppose we could take the really rotten ones out to a feedlot but what I’ve heard is all the feedlot are already full of rotten potatoes and can’t take anymore
