Intro level somm here. Still new to the world of wine, but one thing I have learned for sure is that soil type is indeed a factor in the taste, acidity, and smell of a wine. Soil type greatly affects the pH of the same grape varietal- limestone is a good example of this. Chalky limestone soil is superior for growing Chardonnay grapes, as the alkaline properties of the limestone (CaCO3) increases the natural acidity of the grapes.
