I don't earn that much, just enough to get by, and it took me a while to get into wine, because there is cheap wine, and there is CHEAP wine. Even at the same price ranges you can find some disgusting artificial grape flavored juice with some alcohol in it, and other wines that actually taste like wine, even if it ain't anything elegant. Took me a while to find not only the brands, but the types of wine of specific brands I like, and It really became something I really enjoy to drink. My favorites are malbec, merlot, cabernet sauvingon, and petite syrah guy if anyone's wondering!
His reaction to the '78 is priceless. It hit him like a ton of bricks and was almost overcome with emotion. Would love to see much much more of this content!
I learned about wines getting "corked" the hard way. Back in the early 1990's, I was gifted two bottles of very nice Barolo (Pia Cesare I think). When we finally decided to drink them 20 years later the first one we opened was awful. Definitely corked and smelled like moldy shoes. The second one, however, was perfect and one of the best bottles of wine we've ever had.
It's interesting that the 1994, which was "corked," was the bottle with the wax top, and also the bottle whose cork broke when being removed. It also shows up (at 1:54) as the least expensive of the older wines. I wonder if that means that it's known to have multiple corked bottles. Andre said it was the greatest vintage of his lifetime for Napa wines (how disappointing he didn't get to taste it!), so it's surprising it should be less expensive than the other older wines. Anyone know why that is?
@@TomD67 Of course it's a person thing. When you have a look at vintage charts you notice that all of the vintages in this video are exceptional. Maybe this specific wine is known for bad corks in 1994 and therefore you need to buy 2 bottles to get one that isn't corked?
@@TomD67 I don't think that corked 94 is indicative of its pricing; just bad luck. Although 94 was a very nice growing year in Napa Valley, 2007 was even better. Interestingly, 1985's season wasn't nearly as good as 94 or 07 but its wines are still youthful and evolving and can be aged longer. The 94 on the other hand is an early maturing wine and ready to drink now, if not passed its peak. All of these aspects along with scarcity will factor in to its pricing.

the fact the 94 bottle was cheaper than the 2007 bottle, while he's also claiming 94 was the best vintage ever for Napa, makes me think the seller knew something was up.
No - because the price not only depends on the age and the rating, but also on the rarity. It could be, that in 2007 Heitz just produced much less wine. And if it is a reasonable good vintage, it means, that it might be rarer than a great vintage. Also: maybe the 94 has been directly considered amazing - that means, the price might have been directly excessively expensive. And so on. The seller can not possibly know, that a wine has corkage. Wine is living art. Geeking and nerding out on this video. Love Andre so much! 🍷💗
I don't even like wine but I like listening to this man talk about it.
I've tried the 73 the 74 the 77 and the 78 in 2002-2004. All were from the smaller "Marthas vineyard" batch though. Some of the best wine I've ever had. (I worked at a winery) and got *really* lucky
Enjoyed and felt the "we're not snobs, we're nerds". You can tell he enjoys all aspects of this experience.
This was really interesting! I never knew about the color change in wine, and, I've never seen the two part corkscrew he used to get out the broken cork. That was cool!
I love watching Andre Mack! We need to see him more on a consistent level.
Love this show. As someone who is just getting into wine, relaying to my friends what I heard from this show makes me sound like I've been drinking for ages 😂😂
Me drinking 60c iced tea while watching this: "hmm, yes yes, certainly"
I've never heard of Andre, but I admire his knowledge and passion. Watched the whole thing completely fascinated.
Love this guy.
Wealth of information and sincere appreciation for his audience.
He’s the friend you wish you had to help you pick wine.
Great tasting, Andre! This is my favorite video so far.
I really love how this man speaks, so correctlyand not any snob atittude... so good
Bloody well explained by André, loved the slow and calm approach to it all.
He is an amazing teacher. He has an open door policy when it comes to wine. He extrapolates to make it comprehensible while stripping away the veil of pretention.
I did the same thing, but, I 'tasted' the whole bottles back-to-back.
Might have a problem, but, slept pretty well.
They took the "this video ages like a fine wine" sentence to another level
So well explained by a great story teller. Just down to earth and relatable.
I have never seen better lighting for a wine tasting, gives the wines a unique glow!
Andre, keep up the good work! I look forward to watching your videos when they come out. I like the way that you explain the experience. You need a series!
